Abstract:Objective Smartphone addiction is a public health problem increasing with the technologic developments. It particularly affects the university students negatively in terms of psychological, physical, academic achievement and social relations. This study aims to investigate the relation of eating attitudes between smartphone addiction and internet gaming disorder, also the relation of smartphone addiction with obesity.Methods This cross-sectional and prospective study is consisted of 358 volunteer university students. Socio-demographic data form, Short Form of Smartphone Addiction Scale (SF-SAS), Eating Attitude Test (EAT), and internet gaming disorder scale were administered to the participants.Results Mean age of the participants was 22.27±3.10 years and 59.8% (n=214) were female. In terms of the variables “body mass index, body weight, faculty of the student, economic status of the family, and the people they live with together” were significantly different from controls. Also “monthly mobile phone invoice, EAT score, SF-SAS scores” were statistically different. A significant difference was found among “body weight groups” in terms of both EAT score and SF-SAS. According to the linear regression model variables of “gender, smartphone addiction, and school year” were determined as the predictors for EAT.Conclusion Our current study has revealed the relation between smartphone addiction and eating attitudes, and obesity. Smartphone addiction may lead to an increase in body weight, by affecting eating attitudes. Therefore, the effect of eating behavior disorders in the emergence of the smartphone addiction should be considered. Multi-disciplinary solutions are required to prevent this addiction that may increase over time.

Abstract:Purpose: Smartphone addiction has been a matter of serious concern among society and parents because of its high incidence and serious negative effects. This study aimed to determine the association between smartphone addiction and eating disorders and lifestyle changes among college students. Methods: The present article is a descriptive, cross-sectional study involving 1,112 college students from several universities in Chengdu, China. The data were collected by using the Chinese version of the Mobile Phone Addiction Index (MPAI) and the Eating Attitudes Test-26 (EAT-26). In addition, the information on sociodemographic, lifestyle, and smartphone use were obtained through a self-administered questionnaire. Results: The prevalence of smartphone addiction among the students involved in the study was 22.6%, of which 10.4% were at risk for eating disorders. Female students had higher MPAI scores and EAT-26 scores than male students ( p < 0.001). The proportion of male students with a risk of eating disorders was significantly higher than that of female students ( p < 0.05). The total EAT-26 scores of students with smartphone addiction were higher than that of others ( p < 0.001). The correlation analysis indicated that the MPAI scores were significantly positively correlated with the EAT-26 scores, depression and anxiety, difficulty in falling asleep at night, the frequency of eating fast food and drinking carbonated soft drink ( p < 0.01). In addition, the MPAI scores were significantly negatively correlated with skipping breakfast and the frequency of physical activity ( p < 0.05). Conclusion: Smartphone addiction is significantly associated with eating disorders, eating habits, and lifestyle. The influence of dietary habits and lifestyle needs to be considered for the prevention and development of an intervention for smartphone addiction among college students.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to examine the relationships between high school students' internet addiction, social media usage disorder, and smartphone addiction. The descriptive relational scanning model, one of the quantitative research methods, was used to determine this relationship. The research was carried out with 215 students who continue their education in the field of information technologies of 4 state vocational high schools in the province of Siirt in the 2018-2019 academic year. In this research, internet addiction, social media usage disorder, and smartphone addiction scales were used as data collection tools. The research data were analysed with the SPSS statistical calculation program. As a result of the research, it was observed that high school students' internet addiction, social media usage disorder, and smartphone addiction are moderate and similar in terms of gender and class levels. In the study, a positive relationship was found between high school students' internet addiction, social media usage disorder, and smartphone addiction. It was also found that all three problems were the predictors of each other. The findings were discussed with the literature along with some recommendations.

Abstract:American Journal of Health Promotion, Ahead of Print. PurposeThe purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between obesity and internet addiction in first-year university students (aged 18-25 years).DesignThe study was designed using a cross-sectional analytic model.SettingData collection took place at Dokuz Eylul University, involving a diverse group of first-year students from different faculties.SubjectsThe study population comprised 12,365 students, with 2890 individuals selected using cluster sampling.MeasuresInternet addiction was evaluated using the Online Cognition Scale (OCS). Data on obesity-related variables and demographic details were collected through a questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, chi-square analysis, t test, and ANOVA were applied for statistical evaluation.ResultsThe study included 2105 participants, with 43.8% males and 56.2% females. A significant positive correlation was found between body mass index (BMI) and OCS scores (P = .000), indicating a higher prevalence of internet addiction among individuals with higher BMI. Males had higher mean OCS scores (91.19 ± 35.14) than females (80.21 ± 30.51) (P = .00). Overweight and obese individuals exhibited higher scores on OCS sub-dimensions (P < .005). Notably, individuals with a BMI over 25 were categorized as overweight, and those with a BMI over 30 were classified as obese.ConclusionsThe findings demonstrate a noteworthy relationship between internet addiction and obesity among university students. The study emphasizes the necessity of increased attention to this issue in Turkey for the implementation of effective interventions and preventive measures.

Abstract:Smartphones have become an integral part of people's life, especially among adolescents. But problematic smartphone uses lead to several psychological and physical problems. This study explored the relationships of smartphone addiction, nomophobia, depression, and social appearance anxiety among college students. A total of 473 college students voluntarily participated in this study, including 286 male and 187 female. Data were collected to employ four instruments: nomophobia scale, smartphone addiction scale, social appearance anxiety scale and beck depression scale. This correlational study with the structural equation model revealed that nomophobia had a significant direct effect on smartphone addiction, social appearance anxiety had a significant direct effect on smartphone addiction and nomophobia, and depression had a significant direct effect on social appearance anxiety. This empirical study provides a solid foundation to build a deeper understanding of adolescents' wellbeing, as related to mobile technologies. It is also vital to guide systematic efforts on the individual, institutional or national level to assist college students to maintain overall health and wellbeing, while advancing digital learning in higher education.

Abstract:Journal of Health Psychology, Ahead of Print. With technological progress, the use of the internet and smartphones has become an inseparable part of our lives and their use is increasing. The uncontrolled use of both the internet and smartphones is defined as problematic use. This study examined the effects of problematic internet and smartphone use on dietary behaviors and abnormal body weight status in young adults. Participants were 560 university students. Participants completed measures of demographics, dietary behaviors, internet and smartphone usage habits, Young's Internet Addiction Test and Smartphone Addiction Scale. Negative associations were found between dietary behaviors and problematic internet and smartphone use. Significant inverse associations were also found between these uses and recommended consumption levels of several food groups. For a healthy future generation, it is recommended that policies be developed to prevent or manage these problematic uses, especially in young adults with negative dietary behaviors and abnormal body weight.

The Bidirectional Association between Internet Use, Sleep Quality and Eating Behavior: A Cross-Sectional Study in Northwestern Thrace Region in Türkiye

Abstract:Objective: This study aimed to examine the complex associations between Internet addiction, sleep disturbances, and disordered eating behaviors. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 646 students from 17 high schools in Edirne, Türkiye between December 2023 and May 2024. A face-to-face questionnaire was administered to assess demographic characteristics, Internet addiction (YIAT), sleep quality (PSQI), and eating behavior (TFEQ-R21). Results: In total, 644 students completed the study. The prevalence of Internet addiction among adolescents was 16.3%, with a similar prevalence among male and female adolescents. The prevalence of poor sleep quality among adolescents was 6.4%, and this trend was more pronounced in male adolescents, with an incidence of 13.0%. A weak positive correlation was observed between Internet addiction and disordered eating behavior. Additionally, a moderate positive correlation was observed between poor sleep quality and disordered eating behavior. Gender, maternal education level, Internet addiction, and poor sleep quality were significant predictors of eating disorders in adolescents. Conclusion: The findings of our study are of significant value in providing insights into the development of programs designed to prevent undesired eating behaviors.

Abstract:Studies show a relationship between social appearance anxiety, aggression, and behavioral addictions. However, the relationship between social appearance anxiety, aggression, smartphone addiction, and Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) has not been investigated. The present study used a self-report survey to examine the structural relationships between social appearance anxiety, aggression, smartphone addiction, and IGD. The sample comprised 383 Turkish undergraduate students (50.9% male; 49.1% female), all of who played online videogames. The study comprised demographic information questions and the Social Appearance Anxiety Scale, Buss-Perry Aggression Scale, Smartphone Addiction Scale, and the Internet Gaming Disorder Scale-Short Form. The relationships between scales were examined utilizing structural equation modeling. The findings showed that social appearance anxiety (β=.583) and smartphone addiction (β=.319) had a direct effect on IGD. Additionally, smartphone addiction partially mediated the association between aggression and IGD (β=.125). These findings suggest longitudinal research is needed to examine the temporal patterns and directionality between social appearance anxiety, aggression, smartphone addiction, and IGD. The present study results demonstrate that IGD may be associated with social appearance anxiety, smartphone addiction, and aggression. Therefore, to help reduce the incidence of IGD, interventions are needed among gamers to inhibit social appearance anxiety, reduce smartphone addiction, and decrease aggression.
The Relationships Among Social Media Intensity, Smartphone Addiction, and Subjective Wellbeing of Turkish College Students

Abstract:Excessive use of new technologies appears to be potentially addictive for a minority of young people. The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between personal environment factors (self-esteem and subjective wellbeing) and behaviors (social network site [SNS] intensity and smartphone addiction) drawing upon the Social Cognitive Theory and utilizing structural equation modeling. The sample comprised 734 undergraduate Business School students. Findings indicated that young people tend to use SNSs to enhance their extrinsic outcome expectation (network size) rather than intrinsic one (subjective well-being). Based on our knowledge, the present study is the first to address SNS usage behavior to assess extrinsic and intrinsic factors separately. Results also show that high SNS intensity is associated with high levels of smartphone usage, which decreases the individuals' level of subjective wellbeing. It is also proved that low self-esteem causes smartphone addiction. Lastly, there is a weak but significant relation between SNS intensity and network size is also found. Overall, the present study contributes to our understanding of problematic smartphone and social media use.

Abstract:BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The usage of smartphones has increased rapidly in recent years, and this has brought about addiction. The aim of the current study was to investigate the relationship between smartphone use severity and sleep quality, depression, and anxiety in university students.METHODS: In total, 319 university students (203 females and 116 males; mean age = 20.5 ± 2.45) were included in the study. Participants were divided into the following three groups: a smartphone non-user group (n = 71, 22.3%), a low smartphone use group (n = 121, 37.9%), and a high smartphone use group (n = 127, 39.8%). All participants were evaluated using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Beck Depression Inventory, Beck Anxiety Inventory; moreover, participants other than those in the smartphone non-user group were also assessed with the Smartphone Addiction Scale.RESULTS: The findings revealed that the Smartphone Addiction Scale scores of females were significantly higher than those of males. Depression, anxiety, and daytime dysfunction scores were higher in the high smartphone use group than in the low smartphone use group. Positive correlations were found between the Smartphone Addiction Scale scores and depression levels, anxiety levels, and some sleep quality scores.CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate that depression, anxiety, and sleep quality may be associated with smartphone overuse. Such overuse may lead to depression and/or anxiety, which can in turn result in sleep problems. University students with high depression and anxiety scores should be carefully monitored for smartphone addiction.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: While Internet use makes life easier in many areas, the negative consequences associated with excessive and frequent Internet use increases. Meanwhile, research on the negative psychosocial consequences of frequent and uncontrolled use of social media, which constitutes most of the time spent on the Internet, also draws attention. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between Internet Addiction (IA), Problematic Social Media Use (PSMU), depression, anxiety, and sociodemographic characteristics in a cross-sectional student population.MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 196 Medical Faculty students (62.2% female, mean age 21.33 ± 1.92 y) who completed the Social Media Disorder Scale (SMDS), the Internet Addiction Test (IAT), and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HAD) participated in our study.RESULTS: The results showed that %26.5 participants had moderate IA and PSMU scores (OR: 1.276, %95 CI: 1.187-1.372) and lack of regular sportive activity (OR: 3.003, %95 CI: 1.107-8.144) were risk factors for IA. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that IA was predicted independently by PSMU scores (%49 variances) and anxiety (%6 variances).CONCLUSIONS: The results of our study showed that excessive use of social media and anxiety were significantly associated with IA in young adults. In addition to the contribution of regular sports habits to physical health, better clarification of its relationship with important psychiatric problems such as anxiety and addiction may contribute to addiction prevention programs.

Methods In this cross-sectional study, a self-administered online questionnaire was disseminated using the convenience sampling technique. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire, Eating Attitude Test-26 items, and Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Version were used to measure sleep quality, chronotype, ED risk, and SA risk, respectively. Descriptive and analytical statistics were applied, and P < 0.05 was considered for statistical significance. Results Out of 552 students (mean age: 21.2±5.1 years), 71% had poor sleep quality, 33.9% reported evening chronotype, 37.9% had ED risk, and 56.2% had SA risk. The risk of SA was significantly associated with both poor sleep quality (OR=2.93; 95% CI: 2.01-4.29; p <0.001) and evening chronotype ( p =0.005). ED risk was significantly associated with poor sleep quality (p<0.001), but not with chronotype or SA risk. Poor sleep quality predicted best ED risk. Conclusion High prevalence of SA, ED risk, and poor sleep quality was reported among university students in the UAE. Associations between poor sleep quality, evening chronotype, SA risk, and ED risk were further confirmed, along with sleep quality predicting risks of ED.

Abstract:Introduction: Technological developments have increased the usage of mobile equipment. Using a smartphone became a part of life and accentuated its usage day after day especially in adolescent groups. Aim: The study was aimed to examine the relationship between sleep quality and smartphone addiction of adolescents. Method: This cross-sectional study was carried out with 1192 high school students between March and June 2019. Data were collected with the Personal Information Form, “Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index”, “Smartphone Addiction Scale”. The data were evaluated through percentile distributions, means, independent samples t-test, Kruskal-Wallis test, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation analyses. Results: The mean age of adolescents was determined to be 15.79 ± 0.96, with the mean total score of the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index was 6.05 ± 3.04 and the Smartphone Addiction Scale was 36.01 ± 10.82. Statistically significant differences were observed among adolescents concerning gender, grade, daily smartphone usage duration, internet accessibility, and the use of smartphones before bedtime, impacting both sleep quality and smartphone addiction (p < 0.05). A positive and meaningful correlation was found between sleep quality and smartphone addiction in adolescents (p < 0.05). Conclusion: As the smartphone addiction increases, sleep quality decreases. Adequate sleep is crucial during the growth spurt period. It is evaluated that early diagnosis and prevention of smartphone addiction in adolescents could make a significant contribution to the protection and promotion of adolescent health.
Relationships between internet addiction, smartphone addiction, sleep quality, and academic performance among high-school students

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the relationships between Internet addiction, smartphone addiction, sleep quality, and academic success.METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, high-school students were surveyed to evaluate sleep quality, Internet addiction, and smartphone addiction. Students were queried about their demographics, and grade averages from the previous term were taken as an indicator of academic success.RESULTS: A total of 1,959 students were enrolled in this study, with 1,034 (52.8%) girls and 925 (47.2%) boys, and the median age of the participants was 16 (13-21) years. Multivariate analyses found that poor sleep quality in students who did not have breakfast before going to school was 1.58 times higher than those who did (p<0.001). Students who stayed in a dormitory had 1.79 times more poor sleep quality than those who stayed with their family, and a one-unit increase in the total score of the Young's Internet Addiction Test short form resulted in a 1.08-fold increase (both, p<0.001).CONCLUSION: Our study has shown that students' sleep quality was predicted to be lower if they stayed in a dormitory and skipped breakfast. In addition, Internet and smartphone addictions have a negative effect on sleep quality and academic performance.

Abstract:Background: At present, the cell-phone is not only a talking tool but also a virtual network connection in the individual’s daily life as people can connect easily in one click of finger through internet. Use mobile for more time may enhance the chance to several health risk and psychiatric disorders, such as anxiety disorders and depression. Aims and Objectives: The aim of this study is to access sleep quality and internet addiction in these students using Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) and internet addiction scale, respectively. Materials and Methods: The study was designed as a cross-sectional and questionnaire-based study. This study has been conducted among 300 college students in India through online, emails, and social media. Data analysis has been done on PSQI score and Internet addition score among the subjects. Results: The results of this study demonstrated significant associations of Internet addiction and poorer quality of sleep in those who have moderate and severe internet addiction than normal internet users. Conclusion: In the present study, more percentage of students met the criteria for poor sleep quality and internet addiction as well as have positive association with the different degrees of internet addiction.

Abstract:Due to the notably increased penetration of smartphone use among university students and the alarming risk it poses to both physical and mental health, this study investigated mobile phone addiction among university students concerning student characteristics, mobile phone usage behaviors, and mobile phone use purposes and situations. The participants of this study were 600 university students, who were selected according to the convenience sampling method from different departments in Türkiye. The data were collected using the student characteristics form and the Mobile Phone Addiction Scale. The correlational research method was followed in the study. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results showed that students clustered as addicted and non-addicted had different mobile phone use behaviors on account of daily smartphone use duration, internet use duration on a smartphone, and daily smartphone check frequency. Being a female at a lower grade level and using mobile phones mostly at night made students more vulnerable to mobile phone addiction. Additionally, the results indicated a significant positive moderate correlation between internet use duration, daily smartphone use duration, daily smartphone check frequency, and mobile phone addiction scores. Lastly, checking social media apps, messaging, and editing photos significantly contributed to mobile phone addiction scores. Among the mobile phone use situations, when getting bored, during lessons, when watching TV or movies, and when being alone significantly contributed to mobile phone addiction scores. This study provided a thorough discussion and a set of recommendations.

Abstract:Background: The smart phone contains various mobile applications specifically targeting their contents, such as information, messages, e-mail, education and entertainment towards youths. Problematic and excessive smart phone usage can cause many health problems including anxiety, depression and sleep disorders. Aims: The aim of this study is to analyse the relationship between smart phone usage, sleep quality and depression. Methods: Eight hundred and four students who owned smart phones were given the Information Form, Smart Phone Addiction Scale-Short Version, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). The descriptive statistics, independent sample t-test, one-way ANOVA, correlation analysis and multivariate regression analysis were used for analysis data. Results: The mean age of the students in the sample was 20.93 ± 2.44. It comprised female (65.0%) and male (35.0%) students. All of the students used smart phones. The daily smart phone usage duration was 7.85 ± 4.55 hour. According to the multivariate linear regression analysis results, significant relationships were statistically determined in the positive way between the smart phone addiction and PSQI point ( p < .01) and BDI point ( p < .01). Conclusion: Consequently, a relationship exists between smart phone usage, poor sleep quality and depressive symptoms in university students. The university students, whose depression point is high and sleep quality is poor, should be followed up with regarding the smart phone addiction.
