Abstract:This paper investigates whether the monitoring function of short sale on firms’ financial reporting quality is conditional on the regulatory quality of the markets, and the strength of internal control at firm level. Using data on Chinese cross-listing AH-shares over the period of 2010–2015, we find that short sale restricts accrual earnings management in A-share markets but not in the H-share market. This difference is explained by the relative inferiority of the A-share markets’ regulatory quality, and is accentuated when the cross-listing AH-share firms have weak internal control. Taken together, the results indicate that short-sellers impose strong monitoring on reporting quality when they perceive a great likelihood of managerial expropriation in a weak legal environment, or in firms with weak internal control.

Abstract:We examine the effect of digital financial reporting on firm productivity. Information frictions represent a constraint that impedes efficient resource allocation and a major source of such frictions stems from the fact that firms’ production functions (the conversion from inputs to outputs) are not observable to corporate outsiders. Digital communication of corporate financial data fundamentally changes how firm-specific information is disclosed, released, and disseminated by mitigating information asymmetry between corporate insiders and outsiders and facilitates the processing of such information. We use the staggered implementation of the SEC’s Electronic Data Gathering and Analysis Retrieval (EDGAR) system to investigate the impact of digital financial reporting on firms’ productivity. We show that the implementation of EDGAR results in an economically meaningful and statistically significant increase on firms’ productivity, measured by total factor productivity (TFP). By focusing on the role of information dissemination in coordinating investments and production, our findings provide evidence on the real effects of “going digital” in corporate reporting.

Abstract:This paper based on the perspective of firm’s agency conflicts to examine the relationship between financial reporting quality and investment efficiency and to analyze the interaction effect between financial reporting and free cash flow on investment efficiency. We use 3,726 samples of Chinese listed firms during the period 2008–2012 to test the empirical models and find that financial reporting quality is negatively associated with both underinvestment and overinvestment. Further, we find that financial reporting quality is more strongly associated with overinvestment for firms with large free cash flow, which suggests that financial reporting quality can reduce information asymmetry arising from agency conflicts between the managers and investors. This paper extends the field of application of financial reporting quality and investment efficiency in the emerging capital markets in the world. Moreover, this is the first study that analyzes the interaction effect between financial reporting quality and free cash flow on investment efficiency.
The Real Effect of Financial Disclosure: International Evidence

Abstract:Rajan and Zingales (1998, 2003) argue that good accounting standards and disclosure rules reduce the wedge between the cost of internal and external funds and enhance growth. We test the causal link between financial reporting and growth using a quasi-natural experiment – the mandatory adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) across the world and examine its effect on innovation, a corporate activity that directly drives economic growth. Our Difference-in-Differences (DiD) results suggest that improved financial reporting leads to more innovation in the long run – it generates more patents and patents with higher impact. We also find that the positive effect of improved financial reporting on innovation is more pronounced among industries with higher dependence on external financing, consistent with the role of good financial reporting in reducing the cost of external financing. In addition, we find results consistent with the managerial learning hypothesis that managers are able to learn from the stock market after improved financial transparency. Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether Financial Reporting Quality (FRQ), Corporate Governance and IFRS affect investment efficiency of French listed companies. Based on a sample of 125 French firms listed on the CAC All Tradable index between 2008 and 2017, the study uses Feasible Generalized Least Squares (FGLS) regressions to examine the relationship between FRQ and firms' investment efficiency. The findings show that FRQ plays a role in reducing overinvestment and does not affect underinvestment, suggesting that in a code-law country, informal and personal relationships tend to replace the role of financial reports in mitigating information asymmetry. The results also reveal that the relationship between FRQ and investment efficiency increases with better corporate governance and with the implementation of IFRS. However, the results provide no evidence between incentives to minimize profits for tax purposes and firms' underinvestment and continues to be negative for overinvesting companies that have more incentives to manage their earnings for tax purposes. Our study has some limitations. First, we only examine listed firms, so the results cannot be generalized to unlisted companies that represent the vast majority of French economic activity. Second, this research does not distinguish between government companies and private companies. The two types of companies have different governance mechanisms, financial reporting, disclosure environment and concentration of ownership. This study suggests that in a code-law country with weak investor protection, FRQ acts as a governance mechanism by mitigating asymmetric information and improving firms' investment decisions. The relationship between FRQ and investment efficiency has been widely examined for companies in "common law" countries. This study extends the scarce evidence of this relation to companies in a code-law country. It also builds on previous research by introducing new factors never discussed before that could change this relationship, namely corporate governance, IFRS implementation and tax purposes.

Abstract:This study examines how financial reporting quality affects corporate dividend policy. We find that higher quality reporting is associated with higher dividends. This positive association is more pronounced among firms with more severe free cash flow problems and among firms with higher ownership by monitoring-type institutional investors. Further analysis of the relation between reporting quality and under−/over-payment of dividends suggests that reporting quality largely mitigates underpayment of dividends. Additionally, both a granger causality test and a difference-in-difference analysis of dividend changes around a quasi-exogenous reporting event yield evidence consistent with the direction of causality going from financial reporting to dividends. Overall, these findings are consistent with financial reporting quality acting as a governance mechanism that induces managers to pay dividends by disciplining free cash flow problems. Our findings support the view that dividends are the result of enhanced monitoring (Jensen 1986; La Porta, Lopez-de-Silanes, Shleifer, and Vishny 2000).

Abstract:This study examines the relationship between corporate financialization and outbound investment effectiveness based on empirical data from Chinese companies listed on the Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Exchanges from 2010 to 2022. The study finds that corporate financialization greatly improves investment efficiency by alleviating financial constraints and reducing operating costs. The study provides insight into the implications of financialization for firms' investment efficiency in foreign markets and generates significant guidance for practitioners.

Abstract:We examine the effectiveness of China’s IFRS adoption from the perspective of an important set of financial report users, foreign institutional investors. We find that foreign institutional investment does not increase after China’s IFRS adoption, and some evidence that it actually declines, particularly among firms with weaker incentives to credibly implement IFRS, or with greater ability to manipulate IFRS’s fair value provisions. We also find that the association between earnings and returns generally declines after IFRS adoption, consistent with reduced earnings quality. In addition, we find that foreign institutional investors’ returns decrease after China’s IFRS adoption. Finally, the decline in foreign institutional investment is greater among investors from countries with weak institutions that have also adopted IFRS. Taken together, our evidence suggests that the weak institutional infrastructure in China’s transitional economy impairs IFRS’s intended goal of attracting institutional investment through improved financial reporting quality. Further, financial information users’ home country institutions and IFRS adoption experience affect the effectiveness of IFRS adoption.

Abstract:We investigate whether financial reporting quality facilitates economic growth. Our hypothesis is that better reporting quality improves project identification and selection, and lowers the cost of capital, translating into faster growth. Based on the premise that information uncertainty exacerbates decision making difficulty and agency problems, and that reporting quality mitigates these problems, we predict and find that high information uncertainty industries grow disproportionately faster in countries with better reporting quality. Specifically, we find that high information uncertainty industries grow between 0.12% and 0.22% faster in countries with high reporting quality. Additional evidence using International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) as an exogenous shock to reporting quality supports our hypothesis.
The Effects of Audit Quality Disclosure on Audit Effort and Investment Efficiency

Abstract:We develop a model to evaluate the costs and benefits of disclosing information about audit quality. Specifically, we examine whether audit quality disclosure affects auditors' effort and investors' investment efficiency. In our setting, an auditor exerts unobservable effort to influence audit quality and is motivated by liability in the event of audit failure. The usefulness of audited financial reports for investors depends on both the quality of the underlying financial reporting (e.g., as embodied by GAAP) and the quality of auditors' reports (i.e., the likelihood with which audit evidence uncovers managerial misreporting). We show that audit quality disclosure increases auditors' effort incentives if and only if the underlying financial reporting quality is relatively weak. We also show that such disclosure can actually reduce investment efficiency. Our analyses contribute to the debate about policies aimed at improving audit transparency.

Abstract:In China, where the corporate social responsibility (CSR) process is relatively underdeveloped, the government has promulgated a series of laws and regulations on CSR disclosure in recent years to promote the sustainable transformation of the economy. Using data from A-share listed Chinese firms from 2009 to 2021, this study empirically examines the relationship between CSR disclosure quality and firm investment efficiency in China. The results indicate that (1) improvements in CSR disclosure quality significantly mitigate firms' underinvestment and overinvestment, thereby enhancing investment efficiency. (2) Further analysis shows that high-quality CSR information also promotes investment efficiency by reducing agency costs and financing constraints and improving media evaluations of firms. (3) A heterogeneity analysis suggests that the positive effect of CSR disclosure on investment efficiency is stronger for firms with lower equity incentives, more severe financing constraints, and higher media attention. Our study extends the understanding of the mechanisms through which CSR disclosure affects firms' investment efficiency, potentially providing insights for research in related fields and guiding future CSR disclosure practices in other developing countries.

Role of financial constraints and risk-taking on the relationship between financial reporting quality and investment efficiency: emerging and frontier markets’ perspective

Abstract:Purpose Prior evidence that financial reporting quality (FRQ) of publicly listed firms improves investment efficiency in developed markets leaves unaddressed questions of whether this relationship holds in emerging and frontier markets and what channels influence this relationship. This study aims to test the role of financial constraints faced by firms and managerial risk-taking on the association of FRQ and investment efficiency in 13,231 publicly listed firms in 24 emerging and frontier markets. Design/methodology/approach Available accounting data from 1998 to 2022 are collected for all listed firms across 41 industries in 24 countries. Causal relationships are tested using fixed-effect regression analysis, several additional tests and robustness checks are applied using alternative proxies and concerns for endogeneity are addressed using two-stage least square and system generalised method of moments analysis. Findings Findings show that FRQ of firms in emerging and frontier markets positively affects investment efficiency, the affirmative impact of FRQ on investment efficiency is higher when firms are facing more financial constraints and when managerial risk-taking is lower and financial constraints and risk-taking have a more pronounced impact on the link between FRQ and investment efficiency in the under-investment scenario. Originality/value These findings contribute to the growing body of evidence, shedding light on the meticulous interplay between FRQ and investment efficiency in frontier and emerging markets. Specifically, the increased financial constraints encountered by firms and a more conservative approach to managerial risk-taking emerge as crucial factors complementing this relationship.

Abstract:This study investigates how voluntary International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) adoption impacts information asymmetry in the stock market. We analyze data from firms in Japan, where local accounting standards have substantially converged with IFRS but are more rules-based than principles-based IFRS. These different implementation approaches allow us to investigate how increased accounting flexibility influences recognition and measurement practices, attenuating the effects of accounting standard differences on the level of accounting rule existence or non-existence. We find that information asymmetry increases after voluntary IFRS adoption, which is driven by small- and medium-sized IFRS adopters' decrease in earnings quality after voluntary IFRS adoption. Additional analyses reveal that firms' reporting incentives and accounting resources influence these changes. These results suggest that IFRS's increased accounting flexibility in recognition and measurement practices worsens the information environments of firms with weak incentives to commit to transparent financial reporting or fewer accounting resources (i.e., small- and medium-sized firms).

Abstract:ABSTRACTThis study investigates whether information processing efficiency has an impact on public companies' investment efficiency. Using the adoption of XBRL as an exogenous shock that decreases information processing cost, we find that companies improve their investment efficiency after the adoption of XBRL. The effect is more pronounced for (1) firms that have inferior external monitoring, (2) firms that operate in more uncertain information environments, and (3) firms that have less readable financial reporting. In addition, we find a learning curve in investors' understanding of XBRL over time. After splitting firms into over-investment and under-investment groups, we conclude that the XBRL mandate is more likely to curb managers' opportunistic over-investments. Abstract:This paper aims to investigate whether Chinese internal control regulation improves reporting quality. After the enactment of US Sarbanes–Oxley Act (SOX), China introduced a quasi-SOX practice (C-SOX). C-SOX stipulates that firms should disclose both management and audit reports on internal control and aims to help firms ensure reporting reliability. Previous studies provide solid evidence of the effectiveness of SOX, but the conclusion cannot simply be generalized to emerging markets. We employ a modified difference-in-difference approach regarding the special batched implementation schedule of C-SOX and observe earnings management during the reform, finding that accrual-based earnings quality is enhanced significantly after compliance with C-SOX without causing more real activity manipulation. Our results thus show that C-SOX has a positive effect on reporting quality and triggers no side-effects harming firms’ long-term value. Our findings suggest that the mandatory disclosure regime of C-SOX contributes to better corporate disclosure even with weak enforcement.
The Effects Of Investment Properties Measured At Fair Value Model On Corporate Finance

Abstract:According to the provisions of Chinese Accounting Standards for Enterprises No. 3: Investment properties, when having the appropriate conditions, enterprises can adopt the fair value model to measure investment properties. Taking 26 Chinese listed companies which firstly choose the fair value model in 2007-2009 as study sample, this paper compares the dynamic changes of earnings per share, return on equity, return on assets and asset-liability ratio of these companies before and after adopting fair value model. The results show that the adoption of fair value model improves firm' s profitability, but this increase is only temporary. The results also indicate that the adoption of fair value model decreases firm' s asset-liability ratio, then improving firm' s capital structure and future financing capacity. The results not only confirm the existences of economic consequences of companies' accounting policy choices, but also reveal the motivation of adopting fair value model.

Abstract:This paper investigates the dynamic relationship between mandatory disclosure quality and investment effi- ciency. Through building a three dates' model in which the firm's investment decision is jointly affected by the short-term share price in the capital market and by the total cash flows of the firm, we analyze the impact of strategy of information disclosure of investment efficiency. The results show that when the firm's mandatory disclosure quality is very low, it cannot affect the firm's investment decision; when the firm's mandatory disclosure quality is increasing, it can reduce overinvestment or underinvestment and leads to enhancing investment efficiency. Further, this paper uses 3,726 samples of Chinese listed firms during the period 2008-2013 to test the empirical model and finds that mandatory disclosure qual- ity is negatively associated with underinvestment and overinvestment. Our paper contributes to expand the information disclosure literature by examining the consequences of information disclosure.

Abstract:This study examines the effect of managerial academic experience on firms' financial reporting quality. Using data from China, we find that firms with top managers possessing academic experience exhibit lower levels of both accrual and real earnings management, along with a lower probability of future restatements. This effect is more pronounced for firms with inefficient external monitoring, suggesting that the higher financial reporting quality is mainly explained by the managers' intrinsic motivation to report truthfully. The results hold when we use firm fixed-effect regressions, instrumental variable two-stage regressions, and a propensity score matching (PSM) approach to mitigate the omitted variable and endogeneity concerns. Our study suggests that academic experience can serve as a source of valuable expertise for corporate executives.

Abstract:SYNOPSIS We investigate whether the quality of internal control over financial reporting (ICOFR) has implications for the quality of internal control over fixed assets by examining the relation between material weaknesses (MWs) and investment efficiency. After excluding restating firms and controlling for externally reported earnings quality and the potential endogeneity of material weakness disclosure, we find that managers in firms with weak ICOFR are more likely to make inefficient investments. This relation is stronger when investment-specific MWs are related to capital expenditure and property, plant, and equipment. We further show a significantly negative relation between future cash flows and investments made by firms with weak ICOFR. Overall, our findings are distinct from prior studies in that they are independent of financial reporting quality and suggest that weak ICOFR implies that internal controls over fixed assets failed as well. Abstract:This study assesses whether and how corporate board reforms affect firms' financial reporting practices. Using a sample of 40 countries and employing a difference-in-differences design, we find that corporate board reforms reduce firms' real earnings manipulation and discretionary accruals. These results remain robust after addressing endogeneity concerns and conducting additional robustness tests. Further analyses show that the decrease in earnings management following board reforms is attributable to the mitigation of agency problems and information asymmetry. By shedding light on this mechanism, our paper contributes to the literature by demonstrating how board reforms can enhance firm value.
