Abstract:One of the most common causes of rock damage is chemical weathering. The evolution of chemical weathering on rocks in various climates is crucially significant to research. In this study, sandstone was corroded by HCl solution at room temperature and during the freeze-thaw cycles. X-ray diffraction tests, scanning electron microscopy tests, and uniaxial compression tests were carried out to analyze the chemical composition changes, microstructure characteristics, and mechanical characteristics of damage. The results show that the acidic environment significantly changes the mineral composition of sandstone, and the ion concentration will enhance the efficiency of chemical reactions inside the rock mass. The acidic environment and freeze-thaw cycles both promote the development of pores in the rock mass, although chemical corrosion–induced pore development is mostly centered in the extension of the initial pores. When the freeze-thaw cycle and acidic environment act together, the corrosion caused by the acid is initially inhibited and then promoted. Sandstone is substantially more damaged by the freeze-thaw cycle with an increase in acid solution concentration. The strength damage of sandstone may be accurately described using P-wave velocity. The damage variable of sandstone is established, and the statistical damage model is enhanced, according to the change law of P-wave velocity.
