Abstract:We study a generalization of a recently introduced Dicke trimer model [Phys. Rev. Lett. 128, 163601, Phys. Rev. Research 5, L042016], which allows for cavity losses and unbalanced light-matter interactions (in which rotating and counter-rotating terms can be tuned independently). We find that in the extreme unbalanced limit, the $U(1)$ symmetry of the Tavis-Cummings model is restored, qualitatively altering the critical phenomena in the superradiant phase due to the presence of a zero-energy mode. To analyze this general regime, we develop a semiclassical theory based on a re-quantization technique. This theory also provides further physical insight on a recently reported anomalous finite critical fluctuations in the time-reversal broken regime. Moving to the open-Dicke case, by introducing local dissipation to the cavities, we observe the emergence of a rich range of nonequilibrium phases characterized by trivial and non-trivial dynamical signatures. In the former case, we identify, when time-reversal symmetry is present, a new stationary phase that features superradiant states in two of the three cavities and a normal state in the other cavity. In the latter case, we observe the emergence of dynamical phases in which the system exhibits superradiant oscillations, characterized by periodic or chaotic phase space patterns. The landscape of transitions associated with these dynamical phases features a wide range of qualitatively different behaviours such as Hopf bifurcations, anomalous Hopf bifurcations, collisions between basins of attraction, and exterior crises. We highlight how the two-critical-scalings feature of the closed model is robust under dissipation while the phenomenon of anomalous finite critical fluctuations becomes a mean-field scaling in the open model.

Dissipative Dicke Model with Collective Atomic Decay: Bistability, Noise-Driven Activation and Non-Thermal First Order Superradiance Transition

Abstract:The Dicke model describes the coherent interaction of a laser-driven ensemble of two level atoms with a quantized light field. It is realized within cavity QED experiments, which in addition to the coherent Dicke dynamics feature dissipation due to e.g. atomic spontaneous emission and cavity photon loss. Spontaneous emission supports the uncorrelated decay of individual atomic excitations as well as the enhanced, collective decay of an excitation that is shared by $N$ atoms and whose strength is determined by the cavity geometry. We derive a many-body master equation for the dissipative Dicke model including both spontaneous emission channels and analyze its dynamics on the basis of Heisenberg-Langevin and stochastic Bloch equations. We find that the collective loss channel leads to a region of bistability between the empty and the superradiant state. Transitions between these states are driven by non-thermal, markovian noise. The interplay between dissipative and coherent elements leads to a genuine non-equilibrium dynamics in the bistable regime, which is expressed via a non-conservative force and a multiplicative noise kernel appearing in the stochastic Bloch equations. We present a semiclassical approach, based on stochastic nonlinear optical Bloch equations, which for the infinite-range Dicke Model become exact in the large-$N$-limit. The absence of an effective free energy functional, however, necessitates to include fluctuation corrections with $\mathcal{O}(1/N)$ for finite $N<\infty$ to locate the non-thermal first-order phase transition between the superradiant and the empty cavity.

Abstract:We study a three-level Dicke model in V configuration under both closed and open conditions. With independently tunable corotating and counterrotating coupling strength of the interaction Hamiltonian, this model is a generalization of the standard Dicke model that features multiple distinct parameter regimes. Based on a mean-field approach and third quantization analysis, it is found that the system exhibits rich quantum phase behaviors, including distinct superradiant fixed points, multiphase coexistence, and limit-cycle oscillation. In particular, the cavity dissipation stabilizes a family of inverted spin-coherent steady states whose stability region can be enlarged or reduced by properly tuning the imbalance between the corotating and counterrotating interactions. Abstract:We study the complex nonlinear dynamics of the two-photon Dicke model in the semiclassical limit by considering cavity and qubit dissipation. In addition to the normal and super-radiant phases, another phase that contains abundant chaos-related phenomena is found under balanced rotating and counter-rotating couplings. In particular, chaos may manifest itself through period-doubling bifurcation, intermittent chaos, or quasi-periodic oscillation, depending on the value of qubit frequency. Transition mechanisms that exist in these three distinct routes are investigated through the system's long-time evolution and bifurcation diagram. Additionally, we provide a comprehensive phase diagram detailing both the existence of stable fixed points and the aforementioned chaos-related dynamics.

Abstract:The Dicke model is a staple of theoretical cavity Quantum Electrodynamics (cavity QED), describing the interaction between an ensemble of atoms and a single radiation mode of an optical cavity. It has been studied both quantum mechanically and semiclassically for two-level atoms, and demonstrates a rich variety of dynamics such as phase transitions, phase multistability, and chaos. In this work we explore an open, spin-1 Dicke model with independent co- and counter-rotating coupling terms as well as a quadratic Zeeman shift enabling control over the atomic energy-level structure. We investigate the stability of operator and moment equations under two approximations and show the system undergoes phase transitions. To compliment these results, we relax the aforementioned approximations and investigate the system semiclassically. We show evidence of phase transitions to steady-state and oscillatory superradiance in this semiclassical model, as well as the emergence of chaotic dynamics. The varied and complex behaviours admitted by the model highlights the need to more rigorously map its dynamics.

Abstract:We study the semiclassical limit of the anisotropic two-photon Dicke model with a dissipative bosonic field and describe its rich nonlinear dynamics. Besides normal and 'superradiant'-like phases, the presence of localized fixed points reflects the spectral collapse of the closed-system Hamiltonian. Through Hopf bifurcations of superradiant and normal fixed points, limit cycles are formed in certain regions of parameters. We also identify a pole-flip transition induced by anisotropy and a region of chaotic dynamics, which appears from a cascade of period-doubling bifurcations. In the chaotic region, collision and fragmentation of symmetric attractors take place. Throughout the phase diagram we find several examples of phase coexistence, leading to the segmentation of phase space into distinct basins of attraction.

Abstract:We study the effect of spontaneous emission and incoherent atomic pumping on the nonlinear semiclassical dynamics of the unbalanced Dicke model -- a generalization of the Dicke model that features independent coupling strengths for the co- and counter-rotating interaction terms. As well as the ubiquitous superradiant behavior the Dicke model is well-known for, the addition of spontaneous emission combined with the presence of strong counter-rotating terms creates laser-like behavior termed counter-lasing. These states appear in the semiclassical model as stable periodic orbits. We perform a comprehensive dynamical analysis of the appearance of counter-lasing in the unbalanced Dicke model subject to strong cavity dissipation, such that the cavity field can be adiabatically eliminated to yield an effective Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick (LMG) model. If the coupling strength of the co-rotating interactions is small, then the counter-lasing phase appears via a Hopf bifurcation of the de-excited state. We find that if the rate of spontaneous emission is small, this can lead to resurgent superradiant pulses. However, if the co-rotating coupling is larger, then the counter-lasing phase must emerge via the steady-state superradiant phase. Such a transition is the result of the competition of the coherent and incoherent processes that drive superradiance and counter-lasing, respectively. We observe a surprisingly complex transition between the two, associated with the formation of a chaotic attractor over a thin transitional parameter region.

Abstract:Motivated by experiments observing self-organization of cold atoms in optical cavities we investigate the collective dynamics of the associated nonequilibrium Dicke model. The model displays a rich semiclassical phase diagram of long time attractors including distinct superradiant fixed points, bistable and multistable coexistence phases and regimes of persistent oscillations. We explore the intrinsic timescales for reaching these asymptotic states and discuss the implications for finite duration experiments. On the basis of a semiclassical analysis of the effective Dicke model we find that sweep measurements over 200ms may be required in order to access the asymptotic regime. We briefly comment on the corrections that may arise due to quantum fluctuations and states outside of the effective two-level Dicke model description.

Abstract:The Dicke model describes the collective behavior of a sub-wavelength--size ensemble of two-level atoms (i.e., spin-1/2) interacting identically with a single quantized radiation field of a cavity. Across a critical coupling strength it exhibits a zero-temperature phase transition from the normal state to the superradiant phase where the field is populated and the collective spin acquires a nonzero $x$-component, which can be imagined as ferromagnetic ordering of the atomic spins along $x$. Here we introduce a variant of this model where two sub-wavelength--size ensembles of spins interact with a single quantized radiation field with different strengths. Subsequently, we restrict ourselves to a special case where the coupling strengths are opposite (which is unitarily equivalent to equal-coupling strengths). Due to the conservation of the total spin in each ensemble individually, the system supports two distinct superradiant states with $x$-ferromagnetic and $x$-ferrimagnetic spin ordering, coexisting with each other in a large parameter regime. The stability and dynamics of the system in the thermodynamic limit are examined using a semiclassical approach, which predicts non-stationary behaviors due to the multistabilities. At the end, we also perform small-scale full quantum-mechanical calculations, with results consistent with the semiclassical ones.

Abstract:We investigate the physics of an open two-component Dicke model, where the light field mediates non-reciprocal interactions between two spin species. We show that the model, which we dub non-reciprocal Dicke model, exhibits a discrete parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry and we characterize the emergence of a non-stationary phase, so far explained in terms of dissipation-induced instability, as spontaneous breaking of $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry. We further show that such $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry breaking embodies an instance of a non-reciprocal phase transition, a concept recently introduced by Fruchart $et$ $al.$ [Nature ${\bf 592}$, 363 (2021)]. Remarkably, the phase transition in our model does not necessitate the presence of any underlying broken symmetry or exceptional points in the spectrum, both believed to be essential requirements for non-reciprocal phase transitions. Our results establish driven-dissipative light-matter systems as a new avenue for exploring non-reciprocal phase transitions and contribute to the theory of non-reciprocal collective phenomena.

Abstract:Analytic solution of semiclassical dynamics equations of the Dicke model in a superradiant state is presented. The time dependences of the amplitudes of superradiant bosonic condensate and coherent two-level atomic array in the microwave cavity prove to be expressed via Jacobi elliptic functions of real time and manifest existence of an adiabatic invariant of motion in the strongly coupled system. The periodic beatings of the photonic and atomic coherent state amplitudes are shifted in time revealing an effect of 'bound luminosity', when energy stored in the two-level system during 'darkness' in the cavity is suddenly converted into photonic condensate that 'illuminates' the cavity for half a period, before it plunges into 'darkness' again.

Abstract:Significance Nonequilibrium phenomena in quantum many-body systems are not well understood to date. This applies in particular for open systems, coupled to an external bath. We use a Bose–Einstein condensate in a high-finesse optical resonator with ultralow bandwidth to emulate the open Dicke model. In well-controlled sweeps across the Hepp–Lieb–Dicke phase transition, we observe hysteretic dynamics showing power-law scaling with respect to the transition time, which suggests an interpretation in terms of a Kibble–Zurek mechanism. Our observations indicate the possibility of universal behavior in the presence of dissipation.

Abstract:We show how the dynamics of the Dicke model after a quench from the ground-state configuration of the normal phase into the superradiant phase can be described for a limited time by a simple inverted harmonic oscillator model and that this limited time approaches infinity in the thermodynamic limit. Although we specifically discuss the Dicke model, the presented mechanism can be also used to describe dynamical quantum phase transitions in other systems and opens a new avenue in simulations of physical phenomena associated with an inverted harmonic oscillator.

Abstract:We derive analytical results for various quantities related to the excited-state quantum phase transitions in a class of Dicke superradiance models in the semiclassical limit. Based on a calculation of a partition sum restricted to Dicke states, we discuss the singular behavior of the derivative of the density of states and find observables such as the mean (atomic) inversion and the boson (photon) number and its fluctuations at arbitrary energies. Criticality depends on energy and a parameter that quantifies the relative weight of rotating versus counterrotating terms, and we find a close analogy to the logarithmic and jump-type nonanalyticities known from the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model.

Abstract:Abstract The Dicke model is a paradigmatic quantum-optical model describing the interaction of a collection of two-level systems with a single bosonic mode. Effective implementations of this model made it possible to observe the emergence of superradiance, i.e., cooperative phenomena arising from the collective nature of light-matter interactions. Via reservoir engineering and analogue quantum simulation techniques, current experimental platforms allow us not only to implement the Dicke model but also to design more exotic interactions, such as the two-photon Dicke model. In the Hamiltonian case, this model presents an interesting phase diagram characterized by two quantum criticalities: a superradiant phase transition and a spectral collapse, that is, the coalescence of discrete energy levels into a continuous band. Here, we investigate the effects of both qubit and photon dissipation on the phase transition and on the instability induced by the spectral collapse. Using a mean-field decoupling approximation, we analytically obtain the steady-state expectation values of the observables signaling a symmetry breaking, identifying a first-order phase transition from the normal to the superradiant phase. Our stability analysis unveils a very rich phase diagram, which features stable, bistable, and unstable phases depending on the dissipation rate.

Dissipative Phase Transition in the Two-Photon Dicke Model

Abstract:We explore the dissipative phase transition of the two-photon Dicke model, a topic that has garnered significant attention recently. Our analysis reveals that while single-photon loss does not stabilize the intrinsic instability in the model, the inclusion of two-photon loss restores stability, leading to the emergence of superradiant states which coexist with the normal vacuum states. Using a second-order cumulant expansion for the photons, we derive an analytical description of the system in the thermodynamic limit which agrees well with the exact calculation results. Additionally, we present the Wigner function for the system, shedding light on the breaking of the Z4-symmetry inherent in the model. These findings offer valuable insights into stabilization mechanisms in open quantum systems and pave the way for exploring complex nonlinear dynamics in two-photon Dicke models.

Abstract:We present an analysis of chaos and regularity in the open Dicke model, when dissipation is due to cavity losses. Due to the infinite Liouville space of this model, we also introduce a criterion to numerically find a complex spectrum which approximately represents the system spectrum. The isolated Dicke model has a well-defined classical limit with two degrees of freedom. We select two case studies where the classical isolated system shows regularity and where chaos appears. To characterize the open system as regular or chaotic, we study regions of the complex spectrum taking windows over the absolute value of its eigenvalues. Our results for this infinite-dimensional system agree with the Grobe-Haake-Sommers (GHS) conjecture for Markovian dissipative open quantum systems, finding the expected 2D Poisson distribution for regular regimes, and the distribution of the Ginibre unitary ensemble (GinUE) for the chaotic ones, respectively. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevE.109.014206 ©2024 American Physical Society

Lee-Yang theory of the superradiant phase transition in the open Dicke model

Abstract:The Dicke model describes an ensemble of two-level atoms that are coupled to a confined light mode of an optical cavity. Above a critical coupling, the cavity becomes macroscopically occupied, and the system enters the superradiant phase. This phase transition can be observed by detecting the photons that are emitted from the cavity; however, it only becomes apparent in the limit of long observation times, while actual experiments are of a finite duration. To circumvent this problem, we here make use of recent advances in Lee-Yang theories of phase transitions to show that the superradiant phase transition can be inferred from the factorial cumulants of the photon emission statistics obtained during a finite measurement time. Specifically, from the factorial cumulants, we can determine the complex singularities of generating functions that describe the photon emission statistics, and by extrapolating their positions to the long-time limit, one can detect the superradiant phase transition. We also show that the convergence points determine the tails of the large-deviation statistics of the photon current. Our work demonstrates how phase transitions in the Dicke model and in other quantum many-body systems can be detected from measurements of a finite duration.
