Abstract:In order to obtain high precision in dimensions and better surface quality, the grinding process has been extensively used. During the grinding of advanced materials, problems such as the generation of high temperature, more energy consumption, surplus utilization of cutting fluids, and emissions of several harmful gases negatively impact the environment. As a consequence of such problems, this article focuses on the sustainability aspect of the grinding process with optimization of input parameters. The effect of ultrasonic vibration (≈ 20 kHz) has been incorporated in grinding along with grinding parameters. The ultrasonically atomized ionic liquid with vegetable oil (Rice Bran Oil, RbO) has been used as a green cutting fluid. The experiments have been carried out by adopting the response surface methodology. Finally, analysis of variance has been applied to test the significance of the input parameters such as rotational speed, depth of cut, air pressure, % intensity of vibration, and stand-off-distance. Additionally, the optimal settings obtained have been verified through confirmation experiments. The confirmation test showed an error of 9.98, 7.67, and 16.17% between the predicted and experimental values of tangential force, normal force, and surface roughness, respectively, which were lying in the acceptable range. The optimal conditions of lowest grinding forces and better surface quality were attained with a combination of vibration and atomized cutting fluid while grinding Nimonic 80A material.
