Abstract:Abstract Giovanni Boccaccios Decameron gehört zu den Klassikern der Seuchenliteratur und wurde in der zurückliegenden Corona-Pandemie wieder zur gefragten Lektüre. Die Pestepidemie, die den Ausgangspunkt und Erzählanlass des Decameron bildet, bietet Boccaccio die Möglichkeit, auf den unterschiedlichen Ebenen seiner Novellensammlung ein Plädoyer für die Literatur zu entfalten. Dabei akzentuiert er zum einen die Vorzüge der Literatur gegenüber den gelehrten Diskursen der Theologie und Philosophie. Zum anderen hebt er den Trost hervor, den Lektüre spenden kann, wenn dem Menschen andere Formen geselliger Unterhaltung etwa aufgrund einer Seuche verwehrt sind. Dass weltliche Literatur zu Erbauung und moralischer Unterweisung geeignet ist, setzt eine verantwortungsvolle Rezeption voraus, für die die Erzählergemeinschaft des Decameron als Modell fungiert. Als Corona die Möglichkeiten des sozialen Miteinanders einschränkte, griffen die Menschen wieder zum Decameron , das zudem zum Anlass neuer Leseprojekte wurde.

Abstract:This article reflects on the role of narration in times of crisis. Drawing on studies on storytelling and bibliotherapy, it compares the Decameron, a collection of short stories written during and immediately after the 1348 Black Death, with two Decameron‐based collections written during the first wave of the COVID‐19 pandemic: The New York Times Magazine's The Decameron Project: 29 Stories From the Pandemic and Nuovo Decameron. The article argues that narration has two ways of relating to times of crisis: as an escape from reality and as a therapeutic means of overcoming trauma. Both ways emphasize that storytelling is a future‐oriented tool that can have a positive impact on both the individual and the community: sometimes finding unexpected silver linings, sometimes making sense of a reality that seems surreal. In this sense, the article concludes, the narration is a process of choral reconstruction that brings life back to the stage.

Abstract:The place food and hunger occupy in the Decameron encapsulates the essence of two mutually exclusive worlds : the world of the powerful, who have access to copious food, and the world of the powerless, who do not. This distinction, created on the basis of the quantity of food consumed, dovetails into the discourse of human appetite for sexual fulfilment and material possessions. These principles guide Decameron I, V and III, X. In the first Novella (I, V), the King of France’s attempt to seduce the Marchesana of Monferrato hinges on his desire to consume a meal at her house. By offering him a copious dinner based solely on chicken meat, she concedes to the excessiveness the occasion demands but defuses his advances. Thus the metaphorical representation of his intent to conquer, possess, and devour her turns into the mark of her ability to overpower him by way of a lavish meal. [The spread of the plague: A sciento-historiographic review]

Abstract:There is still uncertainty about the diagnosis and nature of the plague; some scholars have been forced to abandon certainties and be filled with doubts: from believing that the mediaeval Black Plague was, in reality, the bubonic plague (although with unusual characteristics) to stating that there is very little evidence to support a retro-diagnosis. This article looks at this in depth, not only reviewing the historiography but also giving new interpretations which question previous hypotheses through research on images of the time, comparing them to the most recent investigative data. Two primary sources are analysed: Renaissance treaties written by four Italian doctors: Michele Savonarola, Marsilio Ficino, Leonardo Fioravanti and Gioseffo Daciano; and iconography: an illustrated manuscript of the Decameron by Giovanni Boccaccio and a Hebrew Haggadah from the XIVth century. The results are compared to the most recent research on DNA and in micropaleontology.

Abstract:In the person of Boccaccio the humanism of Florence found its major representative. In 1358 he completed his great work, The Decameron, begun some ten years earlier. Considered the prelude to the new spirit that was to be manifested by the Renaissance, it was written in the spirit of a human-centred era. In the tales of The Decameron, based on events occurring during the plague at Florence of 1348, Boccaccio provides a detailed outline of how medical events were viewed at a time of transition from the Middle Ages to the new age of change. The Decameron opens with a description of the Bubonic Plague (Black Death). Boccaccio knows that it started in the East, and attributes it either to the influence of heavenly bodies or to God's anger over the wicked deeds of men. But the symptoms of the plague are not like those in the East, where he has heard that a sudden gush of blood from the nose is a sure sign of impending death. Instead, there are swellings, the buboes, in the groin and under the armpit, growing to the size of a small apple or an egg, then large purple or black spots on other parts of the body, and death soon afterwards. This leads to the story of a group of seven young women and three young men who fled from plague-ridden Florence to a villa outside the city walls. To pass the time, they organized themselves so that each person at night has to amuse the others by telling a story. The stories, told over ten days, contain dramatic and or humorous, elements, and many refer in one way or another to the way illness was conceived and managed in those times.

Yet, The Decameron Sixth Day in Perspective. Volume Six of the Lectura Boccaccii , edited by David Lummus, succeeds in offering new perspectives on one of the most fascinating days of Boccaccio’s collection. This volume, which presents ten essays by renowned Boccaccio scholars from a variety of backgrounds, is part of a long-term project by the University of Toronto Press that includes a 2004 edition of the first day, a 2014 book of the third day, and two 2020 volumes of the fourth and eighth days.

Abstract:This article aims at investigating two narratives about historical moments of sociopolitical, economic, and cultural crisis represented through literary descriptions of epidemics. I will focus on the subtext of the plague in one of the foundational texts of the Western canon, the Decameron, paying particular attention to the metaphor of contagion as a phenomenon allowing for the renegotiations of biopolitical borders in the Florentine society of the Trecento. Building on images of contamination as vehicles of contagion, I am interested in interrogating the roots and scope of the reconsideration of traditional norms and accustomed practices that Giovanni Bocaccio frames in biopolitical terms in the description of the 1348 plague in Florence. I will also take into consideration Philip Roth’s 2010 novel Nemesis, which is set against the background of the polio outbreak in Newark in 1944. Nemesis depicts a prophylactic measure identical to the country retreat that famously frames the main narrative in the Decameron, yet in Roth’s novel it represents a failed attempt to escape contagion. Another narrative trait that Nemesis shares with the Decameron is the context: a society on the verge of essential transformations in the political, cultural, and economic realm. Indeed, mercantile Florence of the Trecento was on the brink of a new era, the Early Modern period, likewise 1944 USA was involved in WWII, fighting for the geopolitical supremacy over a new world order (the Cold War) and shaping a new socio-economic model: neoliberalism.
[Suicidal ideation and completed suicide in The Decameron]

Abstract:Objective: To extend our understanding of suicidal ideation and completed suicide via examination of a medieval Italian text-in particular, examination of the role of social and environmental triggers in such events. Previous studies have successfully examined the texts of ancient Greco-Roman, Old Norse, and Finnish civilizations to better understand the circumstances associated with suicidal ideation and completed suicide. Those texts included depictions of suicide by people without any apparent mental disorder in response to painful social/environmental circumstances. Materials and methods: The Decameron, a collection of 100 short stories written by Giovanni Boccaccio in 1349-51, was examined in detail. The setting of The Decameron is during the Black Death and concerns a group of 10 people that leave plague-ridden Florence for a holiday in the countryside. On each of the 10 days of their trip, each individual tells a story, which in total form the 100 stories of Boccaccio's work. For the present study, all mentions of suicidal ideation and completed suicide were listed and arranged with appropriate headings. Results: In total, 9 accounts of suicidal ideation and 4 accounts of completed suicide were identified, all of which were in response to social stressors, particularly romantic problems. Conclusion: Suicidal ideation and completed suicide in response to social stressors was a feature of The Decameron and it is feasible that this may have been a feature of medieval Italian culture. This would be in agreement with the findings of other studies that suggest that although commonly occurring in response to mental disorder, suicide can occur independently of such disorder as a result of a predicament in which an individual finds him/herself.

Abstract:During the sixteenth century, Italian scholars revised their conception of the field of history so that its purposes went beyond providing political and morally edifying narratives. These scholars contended that history must also account for culture and nature in an encyclopedic fashion. In the same years, numerous newly available texts from antiquity, the Byzantine empire, and the Middle Ages provided insight into the character of earlier outbreaks of plague. Italian physicians, embracing new visions of the field of history, the culture of humanism, and an inductivist epistemology, used these texts to argue that there were continuities among ancient, medieval, and Renaissance epidemics. They catalogued plague and formed historical categories based on severity and perceived origins, leading to the rejection of the conclusions of fourteenth-century western Europeans who viewed the plague of 1347-1353 as unprecedented. These erudite physicians saw medieval plague to be one example of the extreme epidemics that have regularly occurred throughout history.

Abstract:Introduction: COVID-19 put out many interesting aspects of society's responses to an epidemic. Epidemics have a long-standing history in literature. We want to analyze if society's responses to the epidemic have changed over time, and what literature can teach about the society's reaction to an epidemic. Material and methods: We searched and discussed the references to the social effects of the epidemic that are provided in three famous works of European literature providing descriptions about society's reactions to an epidemic throughout the centuries have been selected: "The Decameron" by Giovanni Boccaccio, "The Betrothed" by Alessandro Manzoni, and "The Plague" by Albert Camus. Results: Literature teaches us that: the epidemic's spread is often preceded and favoured by a phase of negation or under evaluation of the problem; restrictive measures are the most efficient for containing the virus' spread; some people have difficulties in being compliant with these measures; infodemia may accompany an epidemic, feeding chaos and fear among the people. Conclusion: Looking at examples of epidemics reported in the past, we can conclude that the current COVID-19 pandemic shows that society's responses to an unknown disease are not changed over time.

Abstract:The topos of love by hearsay, or amor de lonh, popularized by the troubadour Jaufré Rudel, is often considered the embodiment of courtly love. It represents an idealized love that is dependent upon a perpetual state of non-fulfillment. The idea of falling in love with a person one has never seen also contradicts the widely accepted definition of love as a reaction to a visual stimulus, supported by such medieval literary authorities as Andreas Capellanus and Giacomo da Lentini. In Decameron I.5 and IV.4, Giovanni Boccaccio offers his readers a new perspective on love by hearsay, demonstrating both how love by hearsay is a possible occurrence in the natural world and how its manifestation in this world is far from the romanticized images depicted in courtly poetry. This article demonstrates how Boccaccio’s manipulation of the topos of amor de lonh contributes to his main objective in the Decameron—the renewal of literature.

Abstract:"The Decameron" by Giovanni Boccaccio is a work which stands between the Middle Ages and Modernity. There are theories which postulate that concepts of identity and individuality, which arose with the dawn of Modernity, have an influence on mental illness. We chose a hermeneutic approach towards "The Decameron" to analyse the depiction of a changing society, of love, mental suffering and the role of therapeutic interventions. We conclude that Boccaccio showed an interest in intrapsychic mechanisms, an idea pertaining to Modernity, and discuss this idea in light of today's psychiatry and Karl Jaspers' concept of "genetic understanding".

Abstract:The aim of this work is to elucidate psychosocial reactions to plagues by analyzing three landmark descriptions from different eras: Thucydides' description of the plague of Athens (430 BC) in The History of the Peloponnesian War, Giovanni Boccaccio's description of the plague in Florence (1348) in The Decameron, and Albert Camus' description in The Plague (1947). Using a narrative inquiry, we found psychosocial reactions to be complex and ambivalent and could discern several coping strategies. We propose that this knowledge can help psychiatrists and other healthcare professionals during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract:not constituted in relation to masculine fantasies or demands. Rather than nightmares of women’s affective and embodied fluidity, this romance instead charts the ways that an impenetrable feminine body produces desires that cannot be contained by masculinist fantasies of penetration or manipulation. It is only with his Thisbe, whom Allen-Goss considers alongside Ariadne in Chapter Five, that Chaucer creates a narrative of feminine innocence that might exceed the phallic logic that a masculinist hermeneutic demands. By reading these women’s relation to veiling and reading, Chaucer’s legends entertain the possibility of lesbian-like erotic that admits feminine desire through gaps and openings in edifices conventionally drawn to render women’s bodies as available to men’s sexual domination. By circumscribing the desire Chaucer associates with these women, these legends mark feminine eroticism as deviant in a way that assures Chaucer’s own gendered authority. In Chapter Six, Allen-Goss turns to the late fifteenth-century romance, Undo Your Door, to argue that ‘female sexuality [is] represented as a transgressive yet creative force, which . . . assembles its own objects of desire from inanimate materials and from mechanisms disturbingly reminiscent of the objects medieval writers associated with same-sex desire and female autoerotic satisfaction’ (p. 166). By showing how women’s desire is associated with inanimacy, this popular and influential romance critiques the conventional procreative impetus of the genre, particularly its reliance on women’s passivity. This study is groundbreaking for its willingness to rethink how overlooked genres—romance and legend—might admit female same-sex desires that are usually proscribed or overwritten. Yet the analysis of romance is more persuasive, mainly because Allen-Goss explains how the very marginality of such stories might be conducive to an alternative hermeneutics. With Chaucer, Allen-Goss is convinced that women’s desire is ultimately conscripted to support a version of masculinist auctoritas informed by Jerome’s misogynist version of hermeneutics. I disagree, mainly because I am more interested in where women might take these narratives than where ‘father Chaucer’ wanted them to go. Despite this difference, I view AllenGoss’s call to consider feminine desire outside or beyond the structures of masculine fantasies as one of the most important interventions in feminist critical thought for late medieval English literary studies.

Abstract:The article proposes to provide an insight into Pandemic Literature revealing the impact of pandemic on society as well as the remarkable human resilience. Human history has witnessed a number of pandemics like cholera, plague, and the current covid-19. The word ‘pandemic’ is derived from the Greek words ‘pan’ and ‘demos’. Pan means all and demos means people or crowd. Pandemic is an infectious disease widespread over a large part of the world. Resilience is the human ability to recover quickly from adverse circumstances. Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez is a classic piece of pandemic literature. The author says that lovesickness is a literal illness. The story takes place in the backdrop of a cholera outbreak. The marked effect of cholera on people’s life and the remarkable human resilience are highlighted in the article. The protagonist’s outburst in the end of the novel shows the surge of resilience. The analysis of The Plague by Albert Camus, the noted French writer throws light on helpless human beings unable to change their destinies. The writer’s absurdist point of view is revealed. The novel begins with the onslaught of plague in the Algerian city of Oran. Besides the sufferings of people, the change of human attitudes and the trait of resilience are also depicted by the author.

Abstract:Pasolini's controversial figure, marked by refined and revolutionary leftist ideas, is based on experimental artistic ideals that defy the establishment and conservative ideological thinking. Promoting the de-tabooing of sexuality and a more open attitude towards cultural tradition, the director turned away from mimetic, naturalistic film practices and approached biblico-mythical and ancient themes. The selection of genre and stylistically diverse musical references from The Decameron is, thus, in line with the geographical shift of Boccaccio's humanist ideal from the central to the southern Italian macro-region. The aim of this paper is to determine Pasolini's ambivalent and in some ways subversive treatment of religious and folkloric signifiers of the Italian musical past. Flirting with material and immaterial signifying practices encourages alternative interpretations of spirituality, class antagonisms, folkloric traditions and cleverly profiled and unusual elements of eroticism.
