Abstract:Connected to the modern knowledge formation and institutional changes in the late Qing period, the revival of the Guwen Classics and the subsequent disputes between Guwen Classics and Jinwen Classics have always been academic focuses. Since the late Qing dynasty, ”Shu Learning” as an important school of Jinwen Classics, has become a center of the Chinese traditional learning. ”Sichuan Academy of Traditional Chinese Learning”, established at the beginning of the Republic of China and gathering together many scholars, witnessed the disputes between Liao Ping and Liu Shipei, the cultural phenomenon in modern Chinese academic field. We believe that the examination and review of the event is helpful to depict the tendency of Shu Learning and the change of Liu Shipei's research, to outline the transformation of the Jinwen-Guwen Classics at the beginning of the Republic of China.
On the “Nautical Chart of Zheng Zhilong”——the Clarification of the Name and Fact of the “Selden Map of China” Collected in Bodleian Library of Oxford University

Abstract:This paper discussed the provenance and date of the"Selden Map of China"collected in Bodleian Library of Oxford University and proved that the so-called "Selden Map of China"is actually the"Nautical Chart of Zheng Zhilong(Nicholas Iquan)";the Western origin of this map and the name of the original work were also testified.The research shows that this nautical chart of the Ming Dynasty was drawn be tween the sixth and the seventeenth year of Chongzhen Era(1633-1644).In this chart,the starting port of the East and West Oceans was Quanzhou,and most of the navigation routes are in the maritime empire of Zheng Zhilong.Meanwhile,this paper discovered that the Dong Yang Nan Yang Haidao Tu(Map of the Sea Routes of the East and South Oceans)drawn by Shi Shibiao,who was the son of Shi Lang,the old subordinate of Zheng Zhilong,has the same origin with the "Nautical Chart of Zheng Zhilong",both of which were derived from the Western maps drawn with projection method and the drawing of the "Nautical Chart of Zheng Zhilong"has referred to the Western charts captured in the Battle of Liaoluo Bay.Since the Wanli Era of the Ming Dynasty,the so-called "West Ocean"referred to the Southeast Asian waters which was changed into "South Ocean"in the early Qing Dynasty,so the original name of the "Selden Map of China"would have been "the Map of the Sea Routes of the East and West Oceans of the Great Ming",which was presented to the Emperor Kangxi by Shi Shibiao in the Sixtieth year of Kangxi Era(1721).

Abstract:In the late Qing dynasty (1644–1911), local gazetteer maps helped to disseminate the innovations of longitude and latitude used in Western cartography. The use of longitude and latitude lines alongside the traditional Chinese cartographic method of "grid scales" suggests that mapmakers chose an ingenious compromise to accommodate new knowledge alongside traditional practices.

Abstract:In this paper,the author philologically examines the manuscript of Lingzhai Shiji and the interrelated books written by the Korean diplomat Yu Tuk-kong,indicates the differences of the contents among all these editions so as to describe the society and the literati in high Qing.The author considers that after the visit to Beijing,the Korean diplomat made some alterations to his book Lingzhai Ji thus forming a new edition,and that Yantai Zaiyou Lu should contain both poems and explanations just like Luanyang Lu.The explanations of "Rehe Jixing Shi Sishijiu Shou" in Lingzhai Shiji are literally different from the ones in Luanyang Lu and Rehe Jixing Shi Zhu although they have the same origin.Comparing all these editions,we can see the other aspects of the history in the Qing Dynasty,and know more clearly of the true life of the literati and artists living in Yangzhou,Beijing and other cities with these descriptions from outside of China.

Abstract:This book offers a unique contribution to the burgeoning field of Chinese historical geography. Urban transformation in China constitutes both a domestic revolution and a world-historical event. Through the exploration of nine urban sites of momentous change, over an extended period of time, this book connects the past with the present, and provides much-needed literature on city growth and how they became complex laboratories of prosperity. The first part of this book puts Chinese urban changes into historical perspective, and probes the relationship between nation and city, focusing on Shanghai, Beijing and Changchun. Part two deals with the relationship between history and modernity, concentrating on Tunxi, a traditional trade center of tea, New Villages in Shanghai and street names in Taipei and Shanghai. Part three showcases the complexities of urban regeneration vis-à-vis heritage preservation in cities such as Datong, Tianjin and Qingdao. This book offers an innovative interdisciplinary and international perspective, which will be of interest to students and scholars of Chinese urban studies, as well Chinese politics and society.

Abstract:Through the analysis of three Ming Chinese geographical documents which were depicted during the early sixteenth-century, this article contributes a case study on the geographical knowledge of the Timurid Central Asia in Ming Chinese documents. The article argues, according to abundant geographical information oﬀered by these documents, we can reconstruct the active network of transnational routes that connected the Ming Empire and Timurid Central Asia. Furthermore, these documents provide the highly convincing proof that the knowledge of the Ming court to its contemporary Eurasian competitors was continuously renewed.

Abstract:From the late 1700s until 1880, no official or comprehensive map based on first-hand surveys of China was created in Europe. In Qing China (1644-1911) as well, cartographers relied on the Kangxi Atlas maps until the 1860s and 1870s. These were based on exploratory surveys and created with the consultancy of Jesuit mathematicians, and had been revised and augmented several times by the Yongzheng (r.1722-1735) and Qianlong (r.1735-1796) emperors. Following the signing of the Treaty of Nanjing in 1842, the Royal Geographical Society in London asked the geographer William Huttmann to recommend cartographic works from which to compile a new and updated map. This paper analyses Huttmann's recommendations, placing them into the cartographic context of 1844, in order to investigate the cartographic and geographic situation in-between the large surveys undertaken during the imperial age of the eighteenth century and the colonial age at the end of the nineteenth century. As a foundation for a new map, Huttmann recommended maps of Qing cartographers to be taken as a basis, as well as the survey maps produced during the Kangxi era with the consultancy and co-authorship of Jesuit missionaries. The information provided therein was to be supplemented by reports of individual travelers. Huttmann does not mention and recommend the maps of the smaller, newly evolving geographic societies and institutions in Europe, which continued to develop scientific cartographies, but which did not include new first-hand materials.

Abstract:Beginning with the late Ming dynasty, Europeans in China assumed the name of “people from the Great Western Ocean” ( Daxiyang ren 大西洋人), often shortened to “Ocean people” ( yang ren 洋人) or “Western people” ( xi ren 西人). What is the origin of this name? This paper seeks to answer this question by suggesting a new interpretation of the cartography of Matteo Ricci. Much of the scholarly debate about the Ricci world map revolves around the notion that it was a scientific artifact meant to present an accurate image of the world to a willfully ignorant, but otherwise impressive civilization. This paper argues instead that the purpose of Ricci’s cartographic project was to sustain a new identity, that of the Westerner and of the “Great West,” notions created in translation by borrowing and modifying Ming China’s geopolitical vocabulary.

Abstract:The Qing work, Sheng Dashi's Jingni Ji, is the most systematic historical source treating the Jiaqing 18 Tianli Sect's anti-Qing uprising, and it has important historical value. However, because few editions are extant, scholars have long been uncertain about the origins and sequence of various editions. The author, on the basis of two early wood-block editions of the work in his collection, has undertaken a comparison of these with the photolithograph Shanghai Shudian edition and analyses the transmission of the various editions, so that the work can better serve scholars.

Abstract:This article aims to supplement our understanding of the relation between Orientalism and translation by examining an Orientalism of another kind, which, unlike the more commonly described Orientalist paradigms, is not based upon binary distinctions between the East and the West, but rather works within a framework of sameness and common origin. The case in point here is Clement F. R. Allen’s 1891 translation of the ancient Chinese book of poetry, the Shijing. Informed by the sino-Babylonian theory then current in the discourse of sinological Orientalism, Allen’s approach to ancient China evolves a politics of sameness, through which the authority of the Western sinologist-translator is established via the negation of Chinese cultural particularity and a highly ‘fluent’ translation of the Chinese original is validated. Interestingly, this fluency in the text of translation does not work in tandem with ‘the translator’s invisibility’; there is a seeming discrepancy between the transparent surface of translation and the density of the paratextual materials, which complicates simple dichotomies in categorizing translation and requires a more nuanced account of the manifold ways in which translational representations participate in the Orientalist discourse.
