Abstract:We have established the surface tension relaxation time in the liquid-solid interfaces of Lennard-Jones (LJ) liquids by means of direct measurements in molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The main result is that the relaxation time is found to be weakly dependent on the molecular structures used in our study and lies in such a range that in slow hydrodynamic motion the interfaces are expected to be at equilibrium. The implications of our results for the modelling of dynamic wetting processes and interpretation of dynamic contact angle data are discussed.

Abstract:In this paper we use molecular dynamics (MD) to answer a classical question: how does the surface tension on a liquid/gas interface appear? After defining surface tension from the first principles and performing several consistency checks, we perform a dynamic experiment with a single simple liquid nanodroplet. At time zero, we remove all molecules of the interfacial layer, creating a fresh bare interface with the bulk arrangement of molecules. After that the system evolves towards equilibrium, and the expected surface tension is re-established. We found that the system relaxation consists of three distinct stages. First, the mechanical balance is quickly re-established. During this process the notion of surface tension is meaningless. In the second stage, the surface tension equilibrates, and the density profile broadens to a value which we call "intrinsic" interfacial width. During the third stage, the density profile continues to broaden due to capillary wave excitations, which does not however affect the surface tension. We have observed this scenario for monatomic Lennard-Jones (LJ) liquid as well as for binary LJ mixtures at different temperatures, monitoring a wide range of physical observables.

Abstract:Binary mixtures of fully flexible linear tangent chains composed of bonded Lennard-Jones interaction sites (monomers) were studied using the molecular dynamics simulation in the NVT ensemble. Their interfacial properties were investigated in planar interfaces by direct simulation of an explicit liquid film in equilibrium with its vapor. A method for the calculation of long-range interactions in inhomogeneous fluids was implemented to take into account the potential truncation effects. Surface tension and the pressure tensor were calculated via the classical Irving-Kirkwood method; vapor pressure, orthobaric densities, density profiles, and Gibbs relative adsorption of the volatile component with respect to the heavy component were also obtained. The properties were studied as a function of the temperature, molar concentration of the heavy component, and the asymmetry of the mixture. According to the results of this work, the temperature loses influence on the surface tension, vapor pressure, and Gibbs relative adsorption curves as the molecular length of the heavy component increases. This suggests that the universal behavior observed in pure fluids of Lennard-Jones chains also holds for binary mixtures. The contribution of the long-range interactions turned out to account for about 60%, 20%, and 10% of the surface tension, vapor pressure, and orthobaric density final values, respectively. This contribution was even larger at high temperatures and for large molecules. Strong enrichment of the volatile component at the interface was observed in the asymmetric mixtures. One of these mixtures even showed a barotropic effect at elevated pressures and a class III phase behavior.

Abstract:Equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations have been used to investigate the fluid adsorption phenomena and calculate the surface tension in porous media at different temperatures, densities and pore widths. The facts that most of the fluid particles are adsorbed adherent to the pore walls and the surface forms near the walls have been found, and that the surface is not stable which means there exists an oscillation phenomenon in pores have been also found. The surface tension in pores is much bigger than that in macrovolume systems like normal liquid–liquid and liquid–vapor interfaces, and it will increase with the increase of density and pore width, but will decrease with the increase of temperature.

Abstract:The kinetics of homogeneous nucleation of the vapour-gas phase was studied by the molecular dynamics (MD) method in Lennard-Jones systems simulating solutions with partial (A) and complete (B) solubility of components. The calculations were carried out at a temperature close to the normal boiling point of the solvent, two concentrations of the solute, and negative pressures. The pressure, as a function of density and concentration, in stable and metastable states, the parameters of phase equilibrium at a flat interface were determined. The ultimate stretching Δpn = ps–pn exceeded than those calculated from the classical nucleation theory at concentrations of solute c > 0.14 and were less theoretical ones at c < 0.2 in solutions A and B, respectively. A qualitative difference in the formation and growth of the vapour-gas nucleus in solutions A and B was established. In solution A, the partial density of the solvent sharply decreases and the density of the volatile component increases at the region of the bubble formation. In solution B, the density of the volatile component inside the bubble remains close to the density in the surrounding phase, and the density of the solvent decreases at the initial stage of bubble formation.

Abstract:On the basis of longrange correction formula for surface tension, the liquidvapor equilibrium and interfacial properties of pure LennardJones (LJ) fluid have been studied systematically using molecular dynamics simulation method in the canonical ensemble. Seven runs were performed in the reduced temperature range from 0.75 to 1.20. The coexisting densities of equilibrium liquid and vapor phases, density profile, thickness of interface and surface tension for pure LJ fluid were obtained in each run. It has been found that the densities of liquid and vapor phases are in agreement with the results from the Gibbs ensemble Monte Carlo simulation. The values of surface tension from molecular dynamics simulation also match experimental data well. In addition, the thickness of liquidvapor interface increases as the temperature becomes higher, but the surface tension shows opposite tendency.

Abstract:In this work, the liquid-liquid phase behavior of Lennard-Jones fluids was simulated by a Gibbs ensemble Monte Carlo (GEMC) method. To improve the convergence of simulation on such high-density systems, an ''Internal Identity Interchange'' move was proposed and added to the original GEMC method. Five binary mixtures were designed to examine the effects of various molecular parameters on the immiscibility of the two coexistence liquid phases. To study the influences of the two cross-molecular parameters (epsilon12 and sigma12) on the immiscibility of the coexistence liquid phases, the Lorentz-Berthelot combining rules were linearly scaled through multiplication by two constants.

Abstract:A quasi-stationary molecular dynamics simulation method for studying mass transfer through vapour–liquid interfaces of mixtures driven by gradients of the chemical potential based on the dual control volume (DCV) method is described and tested. The rectangular simulation volume contains three bulk domains: a liquid domain in the middle with vapour on each side such that there are two vapour–liquid interfaces. The mass flux is generated by prescribing the chemical potential in control volumes in the vapour domains close to the outer boundary of the simulation volume. The simulation method was applied for studies of two binary Lennard-Jones mixtures: one in which a strong enrichment of the low-boiling component at the vapour–liquid interface is observed and another in which there is practically no enrichment. The two mixtures differ only in the dispersive interactions; their bulk diffusion coefficients are similar. Furthermore, the prescribed chemical potential difference was the same in all simulations. Nevertheless, important differences in the mass flux of the low-boiling component were observed for the two mixtures at all studied temperatures which might be related to the enrichment at the interfaces.

Abstract:We perform molecular dynamics simulations of a two-dimensional binary mixture of Lennard-Jones particles, characterized by some degree of "activity" inside. Starting from a base state that features a gas-liquid interface and a completely segregated system at thermodynamic equilibrium, we introduce differential scalar activity between the two species by prescribing two different effective temperatures. The differential activity is measured as the ratio of the two temperatures. Previous studies showed segregation in a homogeneously mixed system induced by high activity. In this study, we investigate the effect of activity on a pre-existing gas-liquid interface between two separated species. Whereas a high activity ratio induces the formation of new interfaces, we show that a low activity ratio destabilizes existing ones. Moreover, the combination of a pre-existent interface with differential activity leads to partial crystallization and thus to triple phase coexistence (solid, liquid and gas), which is observed over a wide range of moderate differential activities. Findings from this idealized system can guide our understanding of interfacial behaviors in certain biological systems.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulations were performed using the Lennard Jones potential to investigate the liquid vapor interface of argon to further understand the interface phenomenon and to interpret the characteristics of the liquid vapor interface. The study indicated that the liquid vapor interface is actually a wavy surface varying with time and the transition region is the undulating region of the liquid vapor interface. The phase change between the liquid and the vapor is regarded as a discontinuity. The continuous variation of the density, the pressure tensor and the temperature are statistical results. Furthermore, the sharp peak and the little valley in the local temperature profile at the liquid vapor interface are interpreted using the undulant interface structure. The liquid molecule at the interface wave crest has a larger probability of breaking away the liquid film and moving into the vapor. However, vapor molecules in the trough of the wavy interface can be much more easily absorbed by the liquid film into the liquid.

Abstract:A gas-liquid interface involves complex physics along with unknown phenomena related to thermodynamics, electromagnetics, hydrodynamics, and heat and mass transfer. Each phenomenon has various characteristic time and space scales, which makes detailed understanding of the interfacial phenomena very complex. Therefore, modeling the gas- liquid interface is a key issue for numerical research on multiphase flow. Currently, the continuum surface force (CSF) model is popular in modeling the gas-liquid interface in multiphase flow. However, the CSF model cannot treat the vari- ous chemical and physical phenomena at the gas-liquid interface because it is derived based only on mechanical energy balance and it assumes that the interface has no thickness. From certain experimental observations, bubble coales- cence/repulsion was found to be related to a contamination at the interface. The present study developed a new gas-liquid interfacial model based on thermodynamics via a mathematical approach, assuming that the interface has a finite thickness like a thin fluid membrane. In particular, free energy, including an elec- trostatic potential due to the contamination at the interface, is derived based on a lattice gas model. Free energy is incorpo- rated into the conventional Navier-Stokes equation as new terms using Chapman-Enskog expansion based on the multi- scale concept. Using the Navier-Stokes equation with the free energy terms, we derived a new governing equation of fluid motion that characterizes mesoscopic scale phenomena. Finally, the new governing equation was qualitatively evaluated by simulating an interaction between two microbubbles in two dimensions while also accounting for electrostatic force.

Abstract:In this paper molecular dynamics simulations are performed to study the accumulation behaviour of N 2 and H 2 at water/graphite interface under ambient temperature and pressure. It finds that both N 2 and H 2 molecules can accumulate at the interface and form one of two states according to the ratio of gas molecules number to square of graphite surface from our simulation results: gas films （pancake-like） for a larger ratio and nanobubbles for a smaller ratio. In addition,we discuss the stabilities of nanobubbles at different environment temperatures. Surprisingly,it is found that the density of both kinds of gas states can be greatly increased,even comparable with that of the liquid N 2 and liquid H 2 . The present results are expected to be helpful for the understanding of the stable existence of gas film （pancake-like） and nanobubbles.

Abstract:Properties of the vapor‐liquid interface of 16 binary mixtures were studied using molecular dynamics simulations and density gradient theory in combination with the PCP‐SAFT equation of state. All binary combinations of the heavy‐boiling components (cyclohexane, toluene, acetone, and carbon tetrachloride) with the light‐boiling components (methane, carbon dioxide, hydrogen chloride, and nitrogen) were investigated at 0.7 times the critical temperature of the heavy‐boiling component in the whole composition range. Data on the surface tension, the enrichment, the relative adsorption, and the interfacial thickness, as well as for the vapor‐liquid equilibrium and Henry's law constant are reported. The binary interaction parameters were fitted to experimental data in a consistent way for all systems and both methods. Overall, the results from both methods agree well for all investigated properties. The interfacial properties of the different studied systems differ strongly. We show that these differences are directly related to the underlying phase equilibrium behavior.

Abstract:A high-precision simulation algorithm for gas-liquid two-phase flows on unstructured meshes has been developed to simulate gas entrainment phenomenon in a sodium-cooled fast reactor. In this study, it became clear that unphysical behaviors near gas-liquid interfaces were caused by conventional algorithms. Then, physics-basis considerations were conducted for mechanical balances at gas-liquid interfaces to derive appropriate formulations. By defining momentum and velocity independently and developing the momentum transport equations for both gas and liquid phases, the physically appropriate formulation of momentum transport was derived, which eliminated the unphysical pressure distribution caused by the conventional formulation. In addition, the physically appropriate formulation was derived for the pressure gradient to satisfy the mechanical balances between pressure and surface tension at gas-liquid interfaces. As the validation test, the rising gas bubble in liquid was simulated by the developed simulation algorithm with the physically appropriate formulations, and the simulated terminal bubble shapes on the structured and highly-distorted unstructured meshes coincided with the experimental data under each simulation condition determined by the Morton and Eötvös numbers.

Abstract:The size dependence of the surface tension of critical bubbles in a superheated (stretched) Lennard–Jones solution with complete solubility of the components is considered. Two approaches are used to determine this dependence. The first one is based on the van der Waals gradient theory, and the second one is based on molecular dynamic simulation results of nucleation in a solution. It is established that, unlike in a one-component liquid, where the surface tension of the equilibrium bubble is less than that for the flat interface, in solution, it can exceed the flat limit. The ranges of temperatures, pressures, and mixture compositions, where this effect occurs, are determined. The asymptotic behavior of the surface tension of vapor phase nuclei within the limits of zero and infinitely large curvature of the dividing surface is analyzed.

Abstract:Liquid droplets of argon surrounded by the vapor for various temperatures have been simulated by the molecular dynamics method. Macroscopic characteristics of droplets such as density, pressure and temperature profiles are evaluated with emphasis on the temperature characteristics, which was usually regarded uniform in the surface region for an equilibrium liquid-vapor system. The 12-6 Lennard-Jones potential and periodic boundary conditions are employed in the 1000-particles three-dimensional simulation. What differs from the literatures is that the temperature in the surface region is not uniform, but exhibits a curve with two extrema. The peak and valley values are higher and lower than the bulk saturation temperature respectively. The magnitude of the peak and valley values becomes smaller when the saturation temperature is closer to the critical temperature.
Non-Equilibrium Surface Tension of the Vapour-Liquid Interface of Active Lennard-Jones Particles

Abstract:We study a three-dimensional system of self-propelled Brownian particles interacting via the Lennard-Jones potential. Using Brownian Dynamics simulations in an elongated simulation box, we investigate the steady states of vapour-liquid phase coexistence of active Lennard-Jones particles with planar interfaces. We measure the normal and tangential components of the pressure tensor along the direction perpendicular to the interface and verify mechanical equilibrium of the two coexisting phases. In addition, we determine the non-equilibrium interfacial tension by integrating the difference of the normal and tangential component of the pressure tensor, and show that the surface tension as a function of strength of particle attractions is well-fitted by simple power laws. Finally, we measure the interfacial stiffness using capillary wave theory and the equipartition theorem, and find a simple linear relation between surface tension and interfacial stiffness with a proportionality constant characterized by an effective temperature.

Abstract:Dynamic behaviors and thermodynamic properties of liquid-vapor interface atequilibrium are studied with molecular dynamics simulations. The density,the pressure tensor, and the temperature profiles are obtained. Meanwhile,the structure and the dynamic behavior of the interface are analyzed fromthe molecular level. The simulations show that, for the liquid-vapor coexistentsystem, there is a local thermal non-equilibrium area close to the liquidsurface because of the liquid-vapor phase change, while thermal equilibriumcondition is attained outside the interface more than several molecules'diameters. In addition, simulation and experiment show that the liquid-vaporinterface is a wavy surface undulating with time, and the change of the localdensity from the liquid to the vapor is abrupt, the continuous densityprofiles are only statistical results. The thermal non-equilibrium distributionthrough the interface region is caused by the energy transport between theliquid and the vapor phase. For the reason of the small size of the non-uniformtemperature area, the existence of the local non-equilibrium area does notconflict with the macroscopic thermal equilibrium theory. However, the thermalnon-equilibrium distribution may work on the liquid-vapor phase change and haveeffect on the estimation of evaporation/condensation flux.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were performed on model interfaces between n-hexane and water and between water and 1-hexanol. The SPC/E model was used for water. Organic molecules were modeled with united atom potentials located at heavy nuclei, but included explicit modeling of the alcohol H. The structure of the interface was examined in terms of its position, thickness, roughness, and molecular orientations. Additionally, self diffusion coefficients in each phase and the interfacial tension were determined. Significant differences in the interfacial structure were found between the immiscible and partially miscible systems. The interface for the immiscible system is molecularly sharp with only small dynamic waves or corrugation. On the other hand, the interface in the partially miscible system consists of a molecularly sharp region and a bilayer of hexanol oriented with the OH heads out. Relatively static waves corrugate the inner part of the interface considerably more than that for the immiscible system. Water solubility in the hexanol phase occurs in hydrogen bonded cages formed by the OH groups of the alcohol.
