Abstract:Using data from Chinese listed firms, this paper studies the effects of policy and market uncertainties on corporate R&D investment. The empirical findings indicate that both policy and market uncertainties can negatively affect corporate R&D investment. Policy uncertainty poses a significant impact on R&D investment for politically connected firms, but has no impact on firms without political connections. Market uncertainty only has a clear impact on non-politically connected firms. The negative influence of uncertainty is more obvious for firms receiving fewer government subsidies.

Abstract:Government subsidies have been one of the popular policy instruments to stimulate firms' R&D activities. We empirically investigate the impact of government subsidies on firms' R&D decisions of listed manufacturing firms in China. In contrast to prior studies, we split firms' R&D decision into two elements of 'whether to invest decision' and 'how much to invest decision'. The influences and mechanism of government subsidies on R&D decision are theoretically analysed to develop hypotheses tested in this study. We find that government subsidies have a promotion effect on both elements of the firms' R&D decision. Moreover, we also demonstrate the heterogeneous effects of government subsidies between state-owned and non-state firms. Due to the inherent principal-agent problem of state-owned firms and soft budget constraint, subsidies can only increase the probability to undertake R&D activities but cannot stimulate further investment in R&D efforts. However, our results indicate that government subsidies take effects in both elements of R&D decision for non-state firms.

Abstract:<span>Government subsidies play a vital role in enhancing firms' investment in research and development (R&D). The study's aim is to investigate the relationship between government subsidies (including government R&D and non-R&D subsidies), R&D investment and innovation performance of Chinese pharmaceutical listed companies over the period 2009–2015. The results show that government R&D subsidies can stimulate corporate R&D investment; government subsidies have no significant impact on innovation performance while R&D investment has a positive impact. In addition, we examine whether company ownership and executives' technological experience affect this relationship. We also find that there is a positive relationship between government R&D subsidies and R&D investment only in private-owned companies; R&D investment positively influences innovation performance in state-owned companies or in companies with R&D executives. This study provides some insights for managers and policymakers in making effective innovation strategies.</span>

Abstract:This study examines the effects of government innovation subsidies under different combinations of market power (i.e., the relationship between enterprises, upstream suppliers, and downstream customers) and different types of ownership from the perspective of the contemporary marketing microenvironment. Based on the panel data of listed Chinese manufacturing companies from 2009 to 2018, the empirical results show that, in the case of higher buyer power, government subsidies will significantly promote the R&D investment of enterprises and the positive effect is not affected by nature of the enterprise's ownership. In the case of lower buyer power and seller power, government subsidies significantly promote the R&D investment of nonstate-owned enterprises, but have no effect on state-owned enterprises. The conclusions of the study further verify that, under different combinations of market power, there are significant differences in the effects of innovation subsidies for enterprises with different forms of ownership, and these provide a theoretical point of reference for the government to implement innovation subsidies. This study not only fills the theoretical black box of the relationship between government subsidies and enterprise innovation but also provides relatively new empirical evidence for the related research on innovation subsidies in developing countries.

Abstract:Previous studies on developed economies have shown that firms with more research and development (R&D) activities tend to hold more cash. In a transitional economy, such as China, where financial market imperfections prevail, the likelihood of firms reserving cash for R&D is even higher. This study identifies two alternative credit financing channels, equity state-ownership and bank connection, that can be used by Chinese listed firms to raise external funds and mitigate the market imperfection problem. Typical external financing facilitation channels (EFFCs) effectively mitigate financial constraints through reducing information asymmetry between firms and creditors, alleviating R&D dependence on cash holdings. However, as China's financial reform deepens, market environment improvement weakens the EFFC effect. Hence, this study deliberates on the mechanisms by which the EFFC effect may be reduced, leading to useful policy implications for financial market reform in China to abate innovation costs.

The impact of external R&D financing on innovation process from a supply-demand perspective

Abstract:<p>This paper sheds light on the effects of two different types of R&D financing sources respectively from a supply-demand combined perspective, namely subsidy from government and venture capital in market, on the innovation process. Our empirical analysis is based on a unique data set of industrial enterprises located in Beijing ZhongGuanCun Science Park during the period 2008–2015. In terms of the two stages of the innovation process, this paper untangles and compares the effects of the two financing sources on R&D input, patent output as well as profit outcome. We find that both supply- and demand-side external R&D financing channels have differential effects on the innovation process in terms of input, output or outcome as well as the different-sized enterprises. Supply-side subsidy tends to be more effective at the front end of the innovation process, while venture capital shows a demand-side consideration on technology evolution by focusing more on the back end of the innovation process. Both government subsidy and venture capital can have a significantly positive impact on the entire innovation process of small and micro enterprises, whereas for large and medium-sized enterprises, subsidies have no significant impact on profit outcome and venture capital can only affect patents positively. These findings suggest that the Chinese government should focus more on small and micro firms and increase such firms' access to venture capital through a process of certification, so as to achieve an effective combination of government functions and market functions.</p>

Funding Forms, Market Conditions, and Dynamic Effects of Government R&D Subsidies: Evidence from China

Abstract:We examine various factors that influence the effects of government-subsidized research and development (R&D) programs on firm productivity. Based on a panel dataset of Chinese firms, we find the effects of the Innovation Fund for Small and Medium Technology Based Firms (Innofund) are dynamic over time and are heterogeneous depending on funding forms and the level of marketization and economic development across regions. In general, Innfound has significant and positive effects on firm productivity in both the short and long run. However, the short-term effects of Innofund are stronger than the long-term ones. Additionally, the positive effects of Innofund are stronger for firms backed by interest-free bank loans than those supported by appropriation. Meanwhile, Innofund has stronger positive effects in provinces that are less market-oriented or less developed economically. Finally, the short-term effects of Innofund stay stronger than the long-term ones even after we control the funding forms and the market conditions across regions. Identification and selection concerns are addressed through the propensity score matching approach and two-stage estimation. (JEL G28 O38 H76)

Abstract:R&D investments are an important precursor to innovation and ultimately affect a firm's long-term performance. Prior research has treated R&D expenses as static over time, but over the last few years, scholars have switched to a more dynamic perspective of R&D investment. Using data from Chinese listed manufacturing firms, this study investigates the influence of performance feedback on R&D investment frequency, and further explores how that influence differs in SOEs and POEs. These results provide insight into the dynamics of firms' R&D investment, which can help decision-makers properly stimulate firms' R&D investments in China's emerging economy.

Abstract:In this work, we examine how private equity (PE) market development affects firm innovation. Using a large sample containing 2,568,137 firm-year observations of nonlisted firms in China and an ordinary least squares (OLS) regression model, we show that firms in regions with more developed PE markets exhibit a disproportionally higher level of innovation as proxied by patent quantity and quality. We further find that state ownership mitigates the positive effects of PE market development on firm innovation. Moreover, this mitigating effect of state ownership is more pronounced during a politically uncertain period and in industries showing greater dependence on external finance or receiving less support from government policy. Our results are robust to matched sample analysis, alternative measures of PE market development and innovation, and instrument variable tests and analysis on the change of ownership.

Abstract:Does Chinese listed companies have preferences of innovation financing? In this paper,using empirical evidences of 2006 -2010 Chinese listed companies,we find that;(1) Both internal and external financing have significant positive impact on R&D investment,meanwhile the influence of external financing is greater than the internal one.(2) By further investigating the impact of different external financing on the innovation of companies,results comes that government subsidy,followed by the impact of equity financing,can improve R&D investment On the other hand,the impact of debt financing is insignificant(3) We also find that government subsidy have a significant moderating effect on the relationship between debt financing and corporate innovation investment,that is to say,government subsidy can effective "stimulate" companies to enhance R&D investment through debt financing.This article explores the logic of innovation financing of Chinese companies, and provides theoretical suggestions for government to promote enterprise innovation and the development of capital markets.
Equity financing constraints and R&D investments: evidence from an IPO suspension in China

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to exploit the effect of equity financing constraints on the firm’s investment in research and development (R&D) by utilizing a quasi-experiment in China. Design/methodology/approach A difference-in-difference identification strategy is employed to test the treatment effect of the IPO suspension in China. For robustness testing, the authors incorporate cross-sectional variation in external financial dependence to identify the different influences an IPO suspension has on R&D investments for firms across multiple industries through the difference-in-difference-in-difference approach and the authors also adopt a matching approach to check the parallel trend assumption. Moreover, the authors introduce a placebo test to further verify the empirical results. Findings Through the empirical analysis, the authors find that the firms subjecting to the IPO suspension are more likely to reduce their investments in R&D than those not affected by the IPO suspension. Besides, the negative effect of equity financing constraints on R&D investments is concentrated on external financial dependent industries. The firms in industries with larger external financial dependence tend to decrease more in their R&D expenditures when they experience the equity financing constraints. Research limitations/implications This paper provides a new negative evidence on equity financing constraints on R&D investments link so that contributes to the debate about the effect of the financing constraints on R&D investments. Practical implications The study provides a meaningful suggestion for governments to diminish the frictions in the financial market and to improve enterprises’ public financing circumstances by finding that equity financing constraints have negative impacts on firms’ R&D investments. Originality/value There are some apprehensions around previous empirical studies investigating the impact of financing constraints on R&D investments as the existing literature is unable to provide an unambiguous method to exactly distinguish and measure the degree of financing constraints the firms confronting with. This paper solves this problem by first utilizing an IPO suspension in China as a quasi-experiment to examine the effect of equity financing constraints. Therefore, it gives insight to solve the problem of measuring financing constraints in future researches.

Abstract:Based on the data of listed companies in Shanghai and Shenzhen that have implemented private equity placements (PEP) from 2007 to 2020, we examine the impact of different types of government subsidies on institutional investors' participation in PEPs. We found that, first, the more government R&D subsidies obtained by companies issuing PEP, the greater the proportion of strategic investors' subscriptions, with corporate R&D investment playing an intermediary role. Second, the participation of strategic investors in PEPs can effectively contribute to the positive impact of R&D subsidies on firms' innovation output, while the participation of financial investors doesn't. This study reveals the heterogeneity of the information transfer effects of government subsidies and the investment preferences of institutional investors. Our research provides empirical evidence for the authority to improve the government subsidy policy and PEP system, and provide a referenced theoretical basis for institutional investors who intend to participate in PEPs.

Abstract:This study empirically tests the impacts of equity structure on strategic investment psychology in green affairs in R&D vs. Marketing dimensions and company performance. Based on data from Chinese high-tech industry listed companies, the empirical results show that: (1) the largest shareholder’s shareholding ratio has a positive effect on marketing investment psychology and a negative impact on R&D investment psychology, (2) other large shareholders’ shareholding ratio are positive related to R&D investment psychology; (3) R&D investment psychology has a negative effect and marketing investment psychology has a positive influence on the current performance; (4) equity counterbalance is positive related to R&D investment psychology and has a negative effect on the current performance. This study contributes to the literature of corporate governance on sustainability issue by providing a new psychological perspective. The results also provide an important guidance for the corporate governance practice in green economies.

Who is financing corporate green innovation?

Abstract:Green innovation is a major engine of economic growth in the new era. However, due to its high risk, long cycle and double externalities, green innovation often requires long-lasting financial support during its development. In the process of green innovation, do Chinese public listed companies show clear preferences in financing sources? What role does the "invisible hand" of the government play in the green-innovation-related financing activities of public listed companies? Drawing upon the data of green patent application and citation of A-share listed companies in Shanghai and Shenzhen between 2007 and 2014, this paper employed the Poisson model for panel data to perform an empirical study to confirm the aforementioned questions. The research indicates that public listed companies can acquire the funds needed for green innovation both through internal financing and external financing. The effect of the three external financing channels, namely government subsidies, equity financing and debt financing on green innovation are gradually weakened and this result is consistent with a variety of robustness checks. Meanwhile, government subsidy can encourage public listed companies to enhance their level of green innovation through debt financing and equity financing.

Abstract:Technology-based small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are the driving force behind China's economic and technological development. However, these enterprises often face challenges in financing their research and development (R&D) activities due to limited financing opportunities. Previous research has primarily focused on the resource attributes of government innovation subsidies, which serve as a crucial funding source for these SMEs. This paper aims to explore the impact of government innovation subsidies on firms from a novel perspective, considering the signaling characteristics of these subsidies. The theoretical foundation of this study lies in the asymmetric information theory and the signaling mechanism through which government subsidies send signals about enterprises. The study uses enterprise data from 2012 to 2019 to investigate the effect of government subsidies on the R&D investment of enterprises listed on the SMEs Board in Chinese stock market. The results reveal a significantly positive effect of government subsidies on the R&D investment of SME Board-listed enterprises and verify the mediating role of financing constraints in this effect. The extent to which government subsidies influence the R&D investment of SME Board-listed enterprises is associated with the enterprises' ownership characteristics, debt ratios, and times interest earned ratios. This study contributes to the literature on the SMEs Board market and may provide the Chinese government insights into developing industry policies that maximize the effectiveness of government subsidies.

Abstract:From a perspective of coordinating fiscal and monetary policies, this study constructs the government innovation subsidy indicator using the text search method, and examines the impact and mechanisms of government innovation subsidy on corporate research and development (R&D) investment, then investigates how expansionary monetary policy influences this effect. We find that government innovation subsidy can be a booster for corporate R&D by reducing corporate debt financing cost and increasing internal financing, and loose monetary policy suppresses the positive effect of government innovation subsidy on corporate R&D investment. This study offers macroeconomic policy implications that support corporate innovation.

Abstract:This paper studies the relationship between role of government and cost of equity in Chinese security market.Reducing the intervention from government on the firms' operation will have two contrary effects:one is to increase the predictability of operation behaviors and business environment and consequently decreases the cost of equity.The other is the cost of equity will be increased without the government protection.The strength of the two effects is decided by the ownership property.This paper found that there is no significant influence of transferring government role on cost of equity because of the tradeoff between the two effects above while ultimate controller is local government.However,for non-state sample,the two variables have shown a negative relationship significantly because only predictability effect is working.
