Abstract:A simulated coarse-grained heat affected zone microstructure formation mechanism is established in high strength low alloy steels using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). The governing effect of dispersion and ratios between different types of ferritic structural constituents on variation in impact strength is demonstrated. It is assumed from results of simulating a heat affected zone coarse-grained area that a reduction in welding energy input leads to a shift in ductile-brittle transition temperature towards a lower temperature.

Microstructure evolution of HAZ in the multi-pass underwater wet welded joints

Abstract:The microstructure evolution of heat-affected zone (HAZ) in the multi-pass underwater welded joints is investigated in the present work, and it can be characterized by four zones, marked as Region A, B, C and D, respectively. The microstructure in Region A is the mixture of lath martensite and residual austenite. Besides this structure, lots of acicular ferrite appears in Region B as well, and the grain size becomes larger. Lath ferrite combined with granular bainite is observed in Region C. In Region D, tempered sorbite, granular bainite and fine acicular ferrite are found within the grains, while massive ferrite and Widmanstatten structure are distributed along the grain boundary. The thermal effect of multi-pass welding makes the microstructure and property more and more uniform in the HAZ, and the largest hardness 356 HV in the HAZ appears in Region A. © 2013 Editorial Board of CHINA WELDING.

Abstract:The effect of evolved heat-affected zone (HAZ) during metal inert gas (MIG) and cold metal transfer (CMT)–MIG welding of two IS2062 structural-steels, i.e. E250 and E410, was studied. The comparison of mechanical properties such as yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, tensile ductility being represented by %elongation, impact toughness at room temperature, and microhardness was done. Conventional optical and field-emission scanning electron microscopy were used for detailed examination of microstructural evolution across weldments. CMT–MIG in comparison to MIG mode was observed to produce a well-refined microstructure for both E250 and E410. Various HAZ subzones comprised of fully formed pearlite colonies in coarse-grain HAZ, pearlite in patched form in fine-grain HAZ, partially distributed pearlite in inter-critical HAZ, and fine Widmanstätten and acicular ferrite in deposited weld-metal of ER-70S6. Such microstructural manifestations particularly in HAZ subzones exhibited a positive effect leading to improved mechanical performance.

Abstract:The present work aims to understand the contribution made by each heat affected zone (HAZ) to the overall tensile behavior of the P91 steel weld joint. The three principal microstructures of heat-affected zones such as inter-critical (IC), fine grain (FG) and coarse grain (CG) were simulated through isothermal furnace heat treatments at 1138 K, 1208 K and 1473 K respectively. The simulated microstructures predominantly developed tempered martensite after oil quenching followed by tempering. The grain size and hardness across the P91steel weld joint vary in a complex manner. Tensile tests were carried out on each simulated HAZ and actual weld joint at 823K and a strain rate of 3 × 10<sup>-3</sup> s<sup>-1</sup>. The weld joint specimen has failed in the base metal region. An increase in microhardness at the ICHAZ was found after tensile deformation. Higher initial strain/work hardening behavior of soft ICHAZ attributes the shifting of strain localization, consequently failure at the base metal.

Abstract:This paper reports a study on the effect of heat input on the microstructure and mechanical properties of dissimilar aluminium alloys joint by MIG welding. The two alloys used are 6N01S-T5 and 7N01P-T4. The 6N01S-T5 alloy exhibited two distinctive sub-zones within its heat affected zone, with the one adjacent to the unaffected parent alloy being the weakest during tensile deformation. The remarkable reduction in the mechanical properties in the weakest region is attributed to the transformation of the precipitates upon welding from smaller sized β″ and β′ precipitates with strong strengthening effect to larger sized β precipitate. The 7N01P-T4 alloy exhibited nucleation of new grains, dissolution of precipitate, and loss of strength in the heat affect zone.

Abstract:The hot roll bending patchwork components of B1500HS uncoated ultra-high strength steel processed at industrial scale were welded with filler wire. The microstructure, grain orientation, mechanical properties and fracture behavior of the joint were investigated. The results showed that the weld metal (WM) was mainly composed of lath martensite and lower bainite (LB). Various microstructure appeared in different positions of the HAZ, among which martensite-austenite (M-A) constituents in the incompletely quenched zone and tempered martensite (TM) in the tempered zone were the key factors determining the performance of the joint. The welded joint exhibited complex structure and anisotropic mechanical response due to the decarburization and rolling texture of the original base material (BM). In the tempered zone, lath merge and boundaries disappear lead to the annihilation of dislocations, carbide precipitation leads to reduction of mobile dislocations, and recrystallization and recovery eliminate work hardening. The reduction of the effect of dislocation strengthening results in the formation of a softening belt at 6 mm from the center of the weld, with a minimum hardness of 266 HV. The tensile strength of the joint in the rolling direction (RD) was 983 MPa, and the fracture occurred in the softening belt. Both brittle and ductile fracture features were observed. The reason why the fracture occurs in the high temperature tempered zone instead of the incompletely quenched zone was the difference in the effect of "constraint strengthening". Fracture occurred through delamination cracking along the "weak interface" owing to precipitated high-hardness cementite particles and the unfavorably oriented ferrite cleavage planes.

Abstract:The motivation behind present investigation has been a step to create preliminary understanding towards structure‐property correlation i. e., microstructure and microhardness in presence of boron in P91 steel and in its subzones of heat‐affected zone with Gleeble simulation. For microstructure characterization and its comparison amongst selected two steels, light microscopy for prior austenite grain size, morphology of prior austenite grain boundaries and scanning electron microscopy at low‐resolution and high‐resolution in order to study evolution of sub‐structure i. e. martensitic lath block structure and nano‐precipitates were employed. Electron backscatter diffraction measurements of all coupons were done to understand the distribution and contribution of relative fraction of various grain and sub‐grain boundaries within local microstructure. Main effects of addition of 100 ppm boron to standard P91 steel as observed from present microstructural evaluation are; existence of fine nano‐precipitates P91‐coarse grained heat affected zone than its P91B counterpart, grain refinement in fine‐grained heat‐affected zone of both steels with partial dissolution of nano‐precipitates, coarsened nano‐precipitates in P91‐fine‐grained heat‐affected zone after post weld heat treatment, mixed‐structure of partially transformed martensite and coarsened undissolved prior austenite grains with nano‐precipitates in P91‐inter‐critical heat‐affected zone than P91B‐inter‐critical heat‐affected zone. However, difference in microhardness was primarily owing to variation of nano‐precipitates fraction area. In addition, present work induced grounds for microstructure stability i. e., grain boundary hardening in P91B weldments that suppresses type IV failure. Gleeble simulation of P91 and P91B steels was carried out to obtain various heat‐affected zones i. e., coarse‐grained, fine‐grained, and inter‐critical heat‐affected zone. The novel achievement of this work is development of reasoning on stability of microstructure in P91B weldments from electron backscatter diffraction analysis for improved grain boundary hardening that leads to suppression of type IV failure.

Abstract:Fusion welding is extensively used for joining structural assemblies, especially those with complex geometries. However, it often results in heat-affected zones (HAZ) that are, in most cases, softer than other regions around and beyond the weld area. Coupling both experiment and thermodynamic modeling—electron microscopy, x-ray microscopy (XRM), and CALculation of PHAse Diagrams (CALPHAD)—we re-examine the origin of softening in tungsten inert gas (TIG)-welded heat-treatable AA 6061-T651 for a more comprehensive understanding of its (softening) evolution. This study reveals material softening up to at least 38 mm away from the weld center, and partitioned heat-affected zones—HAZ1, HAZ2, HAZ3, and HAZ4—based on peak temperature, associated hardness, and precipitate phases in these zones. Analytical modeling and thermodynamic simulation predict solid solution and further precipitation of coherent GP zones in HAZ1, while coarsening of pre-existing precipitate occurs in HAZ2 (non-coherent/stable β -Mg 2 Si), HAZ3 (both semi-coherent/metastable β ′ and coherent/metastable β ′′) and HAZ4 (coherent/metastable β ′′). These welding-induced transformations—origin of softening—result in non-homogenous hardness in the zones compared to the unaffected base material (120 HV): HAZ1 to HAZ4 are 66-72, 54-64, 64-94, and 95-106 HV, respectively. Under tensile load, the TIG-welded sample fractures at the softest region—HAZ2. Additionally, XRM analysis confirms the presence of porosity in the welded area and its closure during plastic deformation, so that the severity of softening has a greater influence on localized fracture than the presence of porosity in the weld area. This work shows that new solid-state welding technologies that minimize nanostructural changes in base materials, especially precipitation-hardened alloys, should be sought.

Abstract:The alluiminum alloy 1060 was welded by friction stir welding and TIG welding,which were compared to evolute the influence of process on microstructure.The result shows that foundry microstructure was found in two-side TIG joint and columnar grains close to fusion obviously increased along master material to central line which inner stress eneouraged the crack.The fine grain and narrow HAZ were found in friction stir weld and the dynamic recrystalization produces fine grain.A special zone-thermo mechanical affected zone was found.

Abstract:The microfissuring behaviors in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of electron beam (EB) welded nickel-based superalloy GH 4133 have been studied by using analytical scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It is observed that considerable liquation microcracks and some other microffissures called solid-state microcrack initiate in the regions nearby the fusion line and propagate across the grain boundary. The microstructure observation in the microfissures suggests the liquation microcrack results from grain boundary liquation by constitutional liquation of MC carbides and formation of continuous and/or semi-continuous low melting liquid films, however, the occurrence of the solid-state microcracks can be attributed to the effect of ultrafast transit thermal shock introduced by high energy electron beam. Minimal the tendency of microcracks can be obtained by improving the shape of weld pool and enhancing the welding energy input.
Effect of Welding Heat Input on Simulated HAZ Areas in S960QL High Strength Steel

Abstract:When the weldability of high strength steels is analyzed, it is the softening in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) that is mostly investigated, and the reduction of toughness properties is generally less considered. The outstanding toughness properties of quenched and tempered high strength steels cannot be adequately preserved during the welding due to the unfavorable microstructural changes in the HAZ. Relevant technological variants (t8/5 = 2.5–100 s) for arc welding technologies were applied during the HAZ simulation of S960QL steel (EN 10025-6) in a Gleeble 3500 physical simulator, and the effect of cooling time on the critical HAZ areas of single and multipass welded joints was analyzed. Thermal cycles were determined according to the Rykalin 3D model. The properties of the selected coarse-grained (CGHAZ), intercritical (ICHAZ) and intercritically reheated coarse-grained (ICCGHAZ) zones were investigated by scanning electron microscope, macro and micro hardness tests and instrumented Charpy V-notch pendulum impact tests. The examined HAZ subzones indicated higher sensitivity to the welding heat input compared to conventional structural steels. Due to the observed brittle behavior of all subzones in the whole t8/5 range, the possible lowest welding heat input should be applied in order to minimize the volume of HAZ that does not put fulfillment of the allowed maximal (450 HV10) hardness at risk and does not lead to the formation of cold cracks.

Abstract:Weldability studies on high entropy alloys are still relatively scarce, delaying the deployment of these materials into real-life applications. Thus, there is an urgent need for in-depth studies of the weldability of these novel advanced engineering alloys. In the current work, an as-cast Fe42Mn28Co10Cr15Si5 metastable high entropy alloy was welded for the first time using gas tungsten arc welding. The weld thermal cycle effect on the microstructure evolution over the welded joint was examined using electron microscopy in combination with electron backscatter diffraction, synchrotron X-ray diffraction analysis, and thermodynamic calculations. Furthermore, tensile testing and hardness mapping were correlated with the microstructure evolution. The microstructure evolution across the joint is unveiled, including the origin of the ε-h.c.p. phase at different locations of the material. Different strengthening effects measured throughout the joint are associated with the weld thermal cycle and resulting microstructure. A synergistic effect of smaller grain size of the ε-h.c.p. phase in the fusion zone, overturns the reduced volume fraction of this phase, increasing the local strength of the material. Moreover, the brittle nanosized σ phase was also found to play a critical role in the joints’ premature failure during mechanical testing.

Abstract:An investigation into the evolution of temperature and stress fields, as well as the phase transformation in marine steel EH36 during multi-pass welding, and their subsequent effects on Charpy impact toughness, remains in great lack. In this study, submerged arc welding (SAW) was employed to carry out multi-pass welding on EH36 steel plates, followed by the low-temperature toughness test of weldments. Comsol software version 6.2 and finite element analysis are utilized to simulate the evolution of the microstructure, temperature, and residual stress fields throughout the multi-pass welding process. As welding progressed, the heat absorption along the vertical direction was enhanced; in contrast, a decrease is observed in the horizontal direction away from the heat source. This complicated temperature history favors the bainite transformation in the vicinity to the heat source, whereas areas more remote from the weld zone exhibit a higher prevalence of acicular ferrite due to the reduced cooling rate. The concentration of residual stress is predicted to occur at the boundary of the melt pool and at the interface between the weld and the heat-affected zone, with the greatest deformation observed near the fusion line at the top surface of the model. Furthermore, multi-pass welding may alleviate the residual stress, especially when coupled with the formation of acicular ferrite upon cooling, leading to improved low-temperature impact toughness in regions remote from the heat source. These findings offer valuable insights for the design and optimization of multi-pass welding in future applications.

Abstract:Microstructure formation in coarse-grained heat-affected zones (CGHAZs) of bainitic steel welds under multiple welding thermal cycles was investigated by microstructure characterization and finite element modeling. The impact toughness and fatigue crack growth resistance for the CGHAZs were further examined, and the correlation between microstructure and mechanical properties was clarified. The CGHAZ at weld root (CGHAZ-R) experienced three welding thermal cycles with peak temperatures of 1198, 892 and 603 °C, respectively. The microstructure at the CGHAZ-R evolved into fine lath bainite after the first-layer welding, and then transformed into fine polygonal ferrite and granular bainite with refined martensite–austenite (M-A) islands after the second-layer welding. Finally, the M-A islands were tempered during the third-layer welding. For the CGHAZ at the weld toe (CGHAZ-T), the peak temperatures of three thermal cycles were 525, 1022 and 1250 °C, respectively. Its resultant microstructure was composed of lath bainite and granular bainite due to the intermediate cooling rate in the last thermal cycle. Electron backscatter diffraction results show that the density of high angle grain boundary (HAGB) at the CGHAZ-R was higher than that at the CGHAZ-T. Compared to the CGHAZ-T, the CGHAZ-R presented superior impact toughness and a lower fatigue crack growth rate. The higher impact toughness of CGHAZ-R was because of the higher plastic deformation capacity of polygonal ferrite and the tempered fine M-A islands. The retarded fatigue crack growth of CGHAZ-R was due to the numerous crack deflections induced by the high-density HAGB and the high plastic deformability of the polygonal ferrite.

Abstract:Vacuum electron beam welding (EBW) process was employed to butt weld 10-mm-thick HG785D high-strength steels. The penetration into the steel was adjusted by beam current. Microstructures at weld metal and heat-affected zone (HAZ) regions were comparatively observed. Mechanical properties of the EBWed joints including Vickers hardness, tensile and Charpy impact tests were evaluated. The results indicated that microstructures at the weld metal consisted of coarse lath martensite and a small amount of acicular martensite, while that in the HAZ was tempered sorbite and martensite. The grain size in the weld metal was found to be larger than that in the HAZ, and its proportion in weld metal was higher. The hardness in the weld metal was higher than the HAZ and base metal. The tensile strength and impact toughness in the HAZ was higher than that in the weld metal. All the behaviors were related to microstructure evolution caused by higher cooling rates and state of base metal. The fracture surfaces of tensile and impact tests on the optimized joint were characterized by uniform and ductile dimples. The results differed significantly from that obtained using arc welding process.

Abstract:The martensitic creep-resistant steel designated as ASTM A335 for plate and as P91 for pipe is primarily used for high-temperature and high-pressure applications in steam power plants due to its excellent high-temperature properties such as high creep strength, high thermal conductivity, low thermal expansion, and so on. However, in the case of welded joints of such steels, the presence of an inter-critical heat-affected zone (IC-HAZ) can cause the joint to have lower creep strength than the base metal. In the present study, the effect of post-welding heat treatment (PWHT) and weld groove designs on the overall microstructure and mechanical properties of P91 steel pipe welds produced by the gas tungsten arc welding process was studied. Various regions of welded joints were characterized in detail for hardness and metallographic and tensile properties. Sub-size tensile samples were also tested to evaluate the mechanical properties of the weld metal and heat-affected zone (HAZ) with respect to PWHT. After PWHT, a homogenous microstructure was observed in the HAZ and tensile test fracture samples revealed shifting of the fracture location from the IC-HAZ to the fine-grained heat-affected zone. Before PWHT, the conventional V-grooved welded joints exhibited higher tensile strength compared to the narrow-grooved joints. However, after PWHT, both narrow- and V-grooved joints exhibited similar strength. Fractography of the samples indicates the presence of carbide precipitates such as Cr23C6, VC, and NbC on the fracture surface.

Abstract:Laser wobble welding (oscillating laser beam) experiments were performed on high-strength micro-alloyed steels (HSLA) in both a low-carbon state (top plate) and carburized state (lower plate) using various process parameters. The welds were characterized regarding microstructure and microhardness. The cross sections of the welds had a predominantly symmetric geometry and were free of defects. Repeatable heating along an oscillating path resulted in a gradual transformation along heat-affected (HAZ) region of the top HC380LA plate from partial recrystallization through acicular and Widmanstätten ferrite formation to bainite. The microstructure of the lower 16MnCr5 plate experienced self-tempering of HAZ martensite along with bainite formation. The microhardness distribution across the entire fusion zone (FZ) of the dissimilar joint exhibited relatively consistent value, with the most significant variation of 80 HV attributed to the carburized layer of the lower plate.

Abstract:To study the evolution of M-A constituents and their effects on toughness of each HAZ (heat affected zone) sub-zone, a low carbon granular bainitic steel Q690 is welded using automatic metal active-gas welding (MAG) welding and Charpy V-notch impact test is carried out. The microstructures, fractograph and statistical results of M-A constituents is analysed. The results show that the microstructure of weld metal (WM) is acicular ferrite and the dimples on fracture surface of the WM are small and dense, showing ductile fracture feature. Although large amounts of M-A constituents existed in grain boundary in the WM, the toughness is not deteriorated owing to the blocky shape and small size. The microstructure of FZ (fusion zone) and CGHAZ (coarse grain heat affected zone) are upper bainite with string M-A constituents between them;the toughness of FZ is the worst because of the cleavage fracture of coarse grains; the toughness of other sub-zones, in which M-A constituents exist in grain boundary with small blocky shape, are close to base metal (BM). So, the evolution of distribution, size, and shape of M-A constituents is controlled by matrix microstructure; fine bainite and acicular ferrite could remedy the deterioration of toughness derived from M-A constituents; the microstructure control should focus on the matrix microstructure.

Abstract:The microstructural evolution of a dissimilar metal weld (DMW) obtained by narrow-gap gas tungsten arc welding (NG-GTAW) was investigated after it was subjected to a post-weld heat treatment (PWHT). The case studied here is a joint between low-alloy steel pipes and a stainless steel steam generator using a nickel based alloy as filler material. The fusion boundary that was the focus of this work was that between the low-alloy steel (2.25Cr-1Mo) and the nickel alloy (alloy 82). The difference in matrix phase and chemical composition between the two alloys leads to a large difference in chemical potential for carbon, which is mobile at the PWHT temperature. A number of advanced characterization techniques were used to assess the gradient of composition, hardness and microstructures across the fusion line, both as welded and after PWHT. This complete analysis permits to highlight and understand the main microstructural changes occurring during the PWHT.

Abstract:Effect of post-weld heat treatment on the weld microstructure, texture, and its correlation to the toughness of flash butt welded joints were investigated. Upon flash butt welding, the α and γ-fiber in the parent material converted to Goss (110)[001], rotated Goss (110)[11¯\documentclass[12pt]{minimal}\usepackage{amsmath}\usepackage{wasysym}\usepackage{amsfonts}\usepackage{amssymb}\usepackage{amsbsy}\usepackage{mathrsfs}\usepackage{upgreek}\setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt}\begin{document}$$ \bar{1} $$\end{document}0], and rotated cube (001)[11¯\documentclass[12pt]{minimal}\usepackage{amsmath}\usepackage{wasysym}\usepackage{amsfonts}\usepackage{amssymb}\usepackage{amsbsy}\usepackage{mathrsfs}\usepackage{upgreek}\setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt}\begin{document}$$ \bar{1} $$\end{document}0], (001)[11¯\documentclass[12pt]{minimal}\usepackage{amsmath}\usepackage{wasysym}\usepackage{amsfonts}\usepackage{amssymb}\usepackage{amsbsy}\usepackage{mathrsfs}\usepackage{upgreek}\setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt}\begin{document}$$ \overline{11} $$\end{document}0] textures along the fracture plane. Formation of these detrimental texture components was a result of shear deformation and recrystallization of austenite at temperatures above Tnr resulting in a drop of toughness at the weld zone. Inter-critical and sub-critical annealing cycles proved to be less effective in reducing the Goss (110)[001], rotated Goss (110)[11¯\documentclass[12pt]{minimal}\usepackage{amsmath}\usepackage{wasysym}\usepackage{amsfonts}\usepackage{amssymb}\usepackage{amsbsy}\usepackage{mathrsfs}\usepackage{upgreek}\setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt}\begin{document}$$ \bar{1} $$\end{document}0], and rotated cube (001)[11¯\documentclass[12pt]{minimal}\usepackage{amsmath}\usepackage{wasysym}\usepackage{amsfonts}\usepackage{amssymb}\usepackage{amsbsy}\usepackage{mathrsfs}\usepackage{upgreek}\setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt}\begin{document}$$ \bar{1} $$\end{document}0], (001)[11¯\documentclass[12pt]{minimal}\usepackage{amsmath}\usepackage{wasysym}\usepackage{amsfonts}\usepackage{amssymb}\usepackage{amsbsy}\usepackage{mathrsfs}\usepackage{upgreek}\setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt}\begin{document}$$ \overline{11} $$\end{document}0] texture components, and therefore, toughness values remained unaffected. Post-weld heat treatment in the austenite phase field at 1000 °C for 5 seconds resulted in the formation of new grains with different orientations leading to a reduction in the texture intensities of both Goss and rotated Goss components and therefore improved weld zone toughness. Prolonged annealing time was found to be ineffective in improving the toughness due to grain growth.
