Abstract:Electric trains rely on the pantograph and the overhead catenary system (OCS) to receive energy from the power main lines. The purpose of this article is to elaborate on the simulation of pantograph and catenary dynamic interaction. The main feature of this method is using a fast analytical approach in order to simulate the entire catenary and to avoid using the finite elements method. This method is making use of the system vibration modes. Therefore, vital phenomenon such as the wave propagation and reflections can also be simulated. Additionally, droppers under compression are simulated as buckled columns that can endure certain amount of compression forces. Inclusion of the proper OCS initial conditions is also a unique add on to this procedure. Evaluation of both static and dynamic responses of catenary is by comparing with the results from some other available software programs. Validation of the results is according to EN 50318: 2002 standard document.

Abstract:Electric transport vehicles offer sustainable transportation solutions with benefits, such as reduced emissions, noise, and operating costs. This paper draws an overview of the available technical solutions to actuate transport vehicles with electric drives, as depicted by patent literature. A dataset of 1784 patents was created; the documents were selected through a systematic approach, and the patents were then classified according to a number of user-defined categories. The dataset was analyzed by applying two different methods: (i) a quantitative analysis (literature overview), enabling glance evaluations about the defined categories, and (ii) a qualitative analysis (detailed analysis), which focuses on the detection of interesting design features or innovative solutions. The results of this work not only provide an alternative and complementary overview to the analysis of solutions that may emerge from a scientific literature review, but can also offer support in strategic planning to companies wishing to protect their innovations and remain competitive in the evolving market of transport vehicles.

Abstract:The increasing number of electric vehicles (EVs) has led to the growing need to establish EV charging infrastructures (EVCIs) with fast charging capabilities to reduce congestion at the EV charging stations (EVCS) and also provide alternative solutions for EV owners without residential charging facilities. The EV charging stations are broadly classified based on i) where the charging equipment is located - on-board and off-board charging stations, and ii) the type of current and power levels - AC and DC charging stations. The DC charging stations are further classified into fast and extreme fast charging stations. This article focuses mainly on several components that model the EVCI as a cyberphysical system (CPS).

Voltage Constrained Heavy Duty Vehicle Electrification: Formulation and Case Study

Abstract:The electrification of heavy-duty vehicles (HDEVs) is a rapidly emerging avenue for decarbonization of energy and transportation sectors. Compared to light duty vehicles, HDEVs exhibit unique travel and charging patterns over long distances. In this paper, we formulate an analytically tractable model that considers the routing decisions for the HDEVs and their charging implications on the power grid. Our model captures the impacts of increased vehicle electrification on the transmission grid, with particular focus on HDEVs. We jointly model transportation and power networks coupling them through the demand generated for charging requirements of HDEVs. In particular, the voltage constraint violation is explicitly accounted for in the proposed model given the signifcant amount of charging power imposed by HDEVs. We obtain optimal routing schedules and generator dispatch satisfying mobility constraints of HDEVs while minimizing voltage violations in electric transmission network. Case study based on an IEEE 24-bus system is presented using realistic data of transit data of HDEVs. The numerical results suggest that the proposed model and algorithm effectively mitigate the voltage violation when a significant amount of HDEVs are integrated to the power transmission network. Such mitigation includes reduction in the voltage magnitude, geographical dispersion of voltage violations and worst-case voltage violations at critical nodes.

Abstract:As greenhouse gas emissions and global warming are major concerns in the 21st century, the use of electric vehicles (EVs) can substantially cut carbon dioxide emissions. Since their first manufacture, electric vehicles have reached the 21st century, outliving numerous technical concepts. In this study, the EV system is divided into two main sections: the first is a wireless grid-connected charging system for EVs, in which the battery performance of charging and discharging phases are analyzed considering different RPM and speed while discharging, and the second is the architecture of EVs, in which the motor speed is analyzed based on a practical scenario. In addition, the technology takes advantage of charging infrastructure built into the pavement itself to provide electricity to the car while it is in motion. This study focuses into both on-the-go (dynamic) and end route (quasi-dynamic) wireless charging for electric vehicles.

Abstract:Numerous articles have been written regarding the potential affects that electric vehicle (EV) charging stations can have on power distribution systems. With the advent to adopt a dynamic wireless power transfer (DWPT) roadway charging infrastructure, there lies a potential for hazardous effects to occur. Therefore, this paper presents a novel methodology to analyze the sustainability and the potential effects that a DWPT roadway can have on electric power distribution grid. Historical traffic flow (HTF) data is converted using a Monte Carlo method to develop an EV traffic flow (EV-TF). Then, a full DWPT simulation of a 1-mile and 10-mile roadway is performed to determine the power fluctuations that can occur as different densities of EVs traverse the roadway. This method creates simulations using an IEEE 33-Bus power distribution system to evaluate if a DWPT roadway for in-motion EV charging causes voltage magnitudes to fluctuate beyond operational standards.

Abstract:An urgent need to decarbonize the surface transport sector has led to a surge in the electrification of passenger and heavy-duty fleet vehicles. The lack of widespread public charging infrastructure hinders this electric vehicle (EV) transition. Extreme fast charging along interstates and highway corridors is a potential solution. However, the legacy power grid based on alternating current (AC) beckons for costly upgrades that will be necessary to sustain sporadic fast charging loads. The primary goal of this paper is to propose a sustainable, low-loss, extremely fast charging infrastructure based on photovoltaics (PV) and co-located lithium-ion battery storage (BESS). Lithium-ion BESS plays a pivotal role in our proposed design by mitigating demand charges and operating as an independent 16–18 h power source. An end-to-end direct current power network with high voltage direct current interconnection is also incorporated. The design methodology focuses on comprehensive hourly EV-load models generated for different types of passenger vehicles and heavy-duty fleet charging. Appropriate PV-BESS sizing, optimum tilt, and temperature compensation techniques based on 15 years of irradiation data were utilized in the design. The proposed grid-independent DC power networks can significantly improve well-to-wheels efficiency by minimizing total system losses for fast charging networks. The network power savings for low, medium, and high voltage use cases were evaluated. Our results demonstrate 17% to 25% power savings compared to the traditional AC case.

Abstract:Several technological challenges delay the adoption of electrified powertrains in the heavy-duty transport sector. For fuel-cell hybrid electric trucks, key issues include slow cold start, reduced cooling power during high ambient temperatures, and uncertainties regarding durability. In addition, the engineers must handle the complexity of the system. In this article, a Matlab/Simulink library is introduced, which has been developed to aid engineers in the design and optimization of energy management systems and strategies of this complex system that consider mechanical, electrochemical, and thermal energy flows. The library is introduced through five example vehicle models, and through case studies that highlight the various kinds of analysis that can be performed using the provided models. All library code is open source, open for commercial use, and runs in Matlab/Simulink without any need for external libraries.

Abstract:Exponential technological-based growth in industrialization and urbanization, and the ease of mobility that modern motorization offers have significantly transformed social structures and living standards. As a result, electric vehicles (EVs) have gained widespread popularity as a mode of sustainable transport. The increasing demand for of electric vehicles (EVs) has reduced the some of the environmental issues and urban space requirements for parking and road usage. The current body of EV literature is replete with different optimization and empirical approaches pertaining to the design and analysis of the EV ecosystem; however, probing the EV ecosystem from a management perspective has not been analyzed. To address this gap, this paper develops a systems-based framework to offer rigorous design and analysis of the EV ecosystem, with a focus on charging station location problems. The study framework includes: (1) examination of the EV charging station location problem through the lens of a systems perspective; (2) a systems view of EV ecosystem structure; and (3) development of a reference model for EV charging stations by adopting the viable system model. The paper concludes with the methodological implications and utility of the reference model to offer managerial insights for practitioners and stakeholders.

Abstract:Electric vehicles (EVs) are widespread, and their usage is increasing as a result of air pollution and rising fuel costs. EVs are quickly gaining popularity as a green means of transportation. By 2030, most cars will probably be battery-powered EVs. However, the development of EV power transmission is packed with important challenges and is an active topic of research. In EVs, the battery serves to store electrical energy. The DC-DC converter provides a direct current (DC) link between the battery and the inverter. A motor provides the transmission for the vehicle’s motion. Hence, this state-of-the-art provides exhaustive information about battery management systems (BMS), power electronics converters, and motors. Lithium-ion batteries are more efficient for EV applications, and boost converters and full bridge converters are commonly used in EVs. EVs use permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) and induction motors (IM). The renewable energy-based charging station and the fast charging specifications are also clearly addressed for EV applications.

Abstract:With the growing fleet of a new generation electric vehicles (EVs), it is essential to develop an adequate high power charging infrastructure that can mimic conventional gasoline fuel stations. Therefore, much research attention must be focused on the development of off-board DC fast chargers which can quickly replenish the charge in an EV battery. However, use of the service transformer in the existing fast charging architecture adds to the system cost, size and complicates the installation process while directly connected to medium-voltage (MV) line. With continual improvements in power electronics and magnetics, solid state transformer (SST) technology can be adopted to enhance power density and efficiency of the system. This paper aims to review the current state of the art architectures and challenges of fast charging infrastructure using SST technology while directly connected to the MV line. Finally, this paper discusses technical considerations, challenges and introduces future research possibilities.

Abstract:Numerous recent innovations have been achieved with the goal of enhancing electric vehicles and the parts that go into them, particularly in the areas of managing energy, battery design and optimization, and autonomous driving. This promotes a more effective and sustainable eco-system and helps to build the next generation of electric car technology. This study offers insights into the most recent research and advancements in electric vehicles (EVs), as well as new, innovative, and promising technologies based on scientific data and facts associated with e-mobility from a technological standpoint, which may be achievable by 2030. Appropriate modeling and design strategies, including digital twins with connected Internet of Things (IoT), are discussed in this study. Vehicles with autonomous features have the potential to increase safety on roads, increase driving economy, and provide drivers more time to focus on other duties thanks to the Internet of Things idea. The enabling technology that entails a car moving out of a parking spot, traveling along a long highway, and then parking at the destination is also covered in this article. The development of autonomous vehicles depends on the data obtained for deployment in actual road conditions. There are also research gaps and proposals for autonomous, intelligent vehicles. One of the many social concerns that are described is the cause of an accident with an autonomous car. A smart device that can spot strange driving behavior and prevent accidents is briefly discussed. In addition, all EV-related fields are covered, including the likely technical challenges and knowledge gaps in each one, from in-depth battery material sciences through power electronics and powertrain engineering to market assessments and environmental assessments.

Abstract:With full development of 350km/h high-speed rail network in China, further research in the key technology of 380km/h or higher super-speed rail system has become crucial. Applying the simulation of pantograph-catenary interaction based on infinite element method, this paper simulated the dynamic performance of pantograph-catenary system for high-tension overhead contact system at over 350km/h. The research findings showed that wave propagation speed can still serve as a brief computing method for the running speed within the range of 350-400km/h. When the running speed reaches 80% of the wave propagation speed or higher, the current-carrying quality of double-pantograph-catenaries system might not satisfy the standard of EN 50367 all the time.

Abstract:The advancement of energy vehicles has gained support among automotive firms as original equipment manufacturers have recently concentrated their efforts on creating greener propulsion options to satisfy social and ecological demands for clean transportation. In order to fulfil the constantly rising demands of vehicle applications, efficient hybrid energy storage system (HESS) looks to be extremely promising. Understanding how electrical energy storage solutions function is essential. A HESS made up of an active supercapacitor and battery has been proposed to enhance the performance of the electric vehicle power supply. These techniques enable increasing the HESS size or reducing the strains placed on the battery.To improve overall performance and efficiency, a fuzzy logic controller-based energy management method is comprehensively addressed. The suggested control and management technique makes sure that the battery meets the majority of the power demand on average while effectively managing the Supercapacitors' energy levels. To reallocate the necessary power, the SOC variation of the supercapacitor and battery creates imprecise rules. An assessment of the potential to more effectively coordinate the flow of energy in real-time while verifying the suggested energy management.
