In view of the incomplete knowledge and lack of data, the system has epistemic uncertainties. This paper uses Bayesian network fusion evidence theory to analyze the reliability of high-speed railway ATP on-board equipment. According to the requirements of safety-critical system reliability analysis, this paper starts with the analysis of system structure and unit module status, comprehensively considering the influence of uncertain information, common cause failure, recovery mechanism, and degraded operation on system reliability. In this paper, with the advantage of the Bayesian network in the description of events in multiple states, evidence theory is used to reason about the system under incomplete information conditions, obtain the availability interval of on-board subsystems and discuss the impact of the degraded operation on system availability. The [math] factor model is used to analyze common cause failures, and then the Bayesian network modeling of common cause failures is realized by adding common cause failure nodes. The results show that the method enhances the Bayesian network's ability to process uncertain information, and the common cause failure data of the train control on-board subsystem is continuously accumulated. The factor model can be used to obtain a more practical common cause failure rate.

Abstract:The precise operation control of high-speed trains is pivotal to maintain the safety and efficiency of trains, while the inevitable state delays will seriously attenuate the performance of control system. In this paper, an adaptive iterative learning control (ILC) approach for high-speed trains is presented in the presence of the nonlinearly parameterized uncertainties and multiple unknown state delays, aiming to drive that the displacements and velocities of trains can track the desired reference trajectories. To describe the operational dynamics of trains more realistically, the multi-particle model of trains involving multiple time-varying delays is established by analyzing the aerodynamic resistance, mechanical resistance, and coupler force acting on different cars. The proposed adaptive ILC scheme fully leverages various techniques, e.g., the hyperbolic tangent function, the parameter separation, to cope with the inherent nonlinearities, uncertainties and couplings of system. Specially, to eliminate the negative influence of unknown delays, an appropriate Krasovskii function is integrated into the Lyapunov criterion to devise the learning controller and check the stability of control systems. The novelties of our work lie in that the refinement model and periodical characteristic are simultaneously utilized to improve the practicability and performance of control scheme for the high-speed trains with multiple state delays.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part O: Journal of Risk and Reliability, Ahead of Print. In this study, we propose a reliability framework that combines the GO method with fault tree analysis and integrates human factor reliability analysis. Taking the application of remotely operated vehicle (ROV) in underwater oil and gas production as an example, a reliability model of ROV operation process is established. The human reliability in the ROV operation process is analyzed on the basis of Cognitive Reliability and Error Analysis Method (CREAM) extension approach. The influence of human factor reliability and equipment reliability on the system is compared and analyzed. The importance of each operation step is also compared and analyzed. A sensitivity analysis of the ROV during operation is performed. This study provides a theoretical basis for the improvement and maintenance of the operational reliability of ROV. The proposed reliability modeling approach solves the reliability analysis problem of large and complex operating systems.

Abstract:Safety and reliability of High Speed Trains (HSTs) are crucial factors for their development as mass transport means. For this reason, they are highly monitored systems, and large amounts of data are collected and used for efficient operation and maintenance. In this paper, we focus on extracting knowledge from these data for fault detection in the braking system of HSTs. A probabilistic, explainable framework is proposed, based on an objective-oriented Bayesian Network (BN). A symmetric uncertainty-based feature selection method is combined with BN, for the first time, for reducing the dimensionality of the original data. The imbalance ratio of the data can be up to more than 300 and sensitivity analysis of the method is performed. Experiment results show that the proposed approach is more accurate than published method.

According to the conversion of mutual relations, the paper put forward a method to calculate the life expectancy of top events in Markov quantitative analysis. Afterwards the paper presented the failure mode, failure rate and life expectancy of the top events. Meanwhile, the paper presented the method to calculate probability of important bottom events to top events. Finally the research is verified in the analysis of a city rail traffic automatic train super-vision system.

Abstract:Train network control management system (TCMS) is an important part of the High-speed rail train. Because of the TCMS's complex and redundant structure, long-term operation environment, etc., breakdowns inevitably in the long-time running. Based on the historical fault data of the TCMS accumulated during their online service, the working principles, failure modes, and effects analysis of TCMS are researched and the dynamic fault tree (DFT) model of TCMS failure is built. Then, the dynamic fault tree model is transformed into the Bayesian network (BN) model, which can model the reliability of such types of systems. Finally, combining DFT with BN is used for fault probability estimation and reliability assessment. The results present that increasing the reliability of key modules for the TCMS would be of great help to High-speed rail train engineers in the fault diagnosis field.

Abstract:The catenary of the high-speed rail power supply system is greatly affected by the weather during operation. Once it breaks down, there will be serious consequences. Besides, the mechanism of failure risk of catenary is complex so that it's difficult to analyze. Aiming at such characteristics, this paper proposes a dynamic flashover risk probability calculation method combining characteristic quantity based on Bayesian network. In this paper, the flashover risk propagation chain of the catenary in the humid and polluted environment is established and the probability mathematical model of the risk propagation process is given. In addition, the mechanism of risk propagation is used to establish the functional relation between the monitored characteristic quantity and the risk probability. Then the functional relation is used as the dynamic condition probability of Bayesian network to calculate the dynamic probability of the whole risk. The consequences of rail station passenger congestion caused by catenary flashover in bad weather are analyzed and the severity of consequence is determined to assess the dynamic risk level.

Abstract:The analysis of complex system reliability is an area of growing interest, particularly given the diverse and intricate nature of the subsystems and components these systems encompass. Tackling the reliability of such multifaceted systems presents challenges, including component wear, multiple failure modes, the cascading effects of these failures, and the associated uncertainties, which require careful consideration. While traditional studies have examined these elements, the dynamic interplay of information between subsystems and the overarching system has only recently begun to draw focus. A notably understudied aspect is the reliability analysis of complex real-time systems that must adapt to evolving operational conditions. This paper proposes a novel methodology for assessing the reliability of complex real-time systems. This method integrates complex network theory, thus capturing the intricate operational characteristics of these systems, with adjustments to several key complex network parameters to define the nuances of communication within the network framework. To showcase the efficacy and adaptability of our approach, we present case studies on railway and maritime systems. For the railway system, our analysis spans various operational scenarios: from single train operations to simultaneous operations across multiple or different radio block center regions, accounting for node and edge failures. In maritime systems, the case studies employing the VHF data exchange system under operational scenarios are subject to network reliability analysis, successfully pinpointing critical vulnerabilities and modules of high importance. The findings of our research are promising, demonstrating that the proposed method not only accurately evaluates the overall reliability of complex systems but also identifies the pivotal weak points—be it modules or links—warranting attention for system enhancement.

Due to the complex structure of multi-state complex systems and the lack of data, information, and knowledge, the uncertainty of the logical relationship between the failure states of systems and components and the uncertainty of related failure data become the key issues in the reliability analysis of multi-state complex systems. In this paper, combined with multi-state fault tree (MSFT), a multi-state reliability assessment framework for complex systems considering uncertainty based on multi-source information fusion and multi-state Bayesian network (MSBN) is proposed. The multi-source information fusion method combines historical data and experts' opinions to solve the uncertainty problem of multi-state failure data in complex equipment systems effectively. Based on the multi-source information fusion method, the calculation method of multi-state prior probability and the construction method of conditional probability are given. By constructing the conditional probability table (CPT), the uncertain logic relationship between the multi-state nodes is effectively expressed, which effectively improves the efficiency of CPT acquisition for MSBN and reduces the workload of experts scoring. Finally, a mud circulating system is taken as an example to prove the proposed method, and the specific calculation process, evaluation results, and some discussions are given. The results show that the proposed method is an effective multi-state reliability analysis method for complex uncertain multi-state systems.

Abstract:To assess and analyze the operational reliability of aircraft systems, an aircraft system Bayesian network (ASBN) method is proposed with the functional and logical coupling relationship of aircraft components, which integrates the characteristics of components related to aircraft operation, is built for analyzing the operational reliability under considering the effect of stochastic features. The aircraft system operating reliability is first assessed by forward inference of ASBN. And the most likely failure component or subsystem under the appearance of different failure condition severity categories are identified. The results show that the aircraft system operating reliability is not as high as the reliability of its components; the most likely failure component or subsystem are those tightly connected to other components or subsystems. The efforts of this paper provide a useful way for deriving operational reliability analysis of complex systems.

Abstract:The dynamic and dependant behaviors are typical characteristics of modern complex systems, whose reliability is often improved through the design of multichannel parallel structures. The existence of common cause failures (CCFs) has a significant impact on system reliability. A reliability analysis model is proposed for dynamic systems with CCFs based on discrete-time Bayesian networks (DTBNs). The system operating time is dispersed into several time intervals, and the component failures are divided into independent and CCF states. Dynamic systems with cold and warm spare parts are examined to determine the modelling methodology and conditional probability tables (CPTs) of Bayesian network (BN) nodes. The reliability calculation is realised through the Bayesian inference mechanism. The model is applied to the CCF analysis and fault diagnosis of a digital safety-level distributed control system (DCS) of nuclear power plants (NPPs) to prove the effectiveness and feasibility of the method.

Abstract:The "Rejuvenation" high-speed train is an advanced electric multiple unit (EMU) train developed by China independently. When high-speed trains have been put into operation, situations where the auxiliary power supply system cannot be used because of battery system failure are becoming more common. This poses a great threat to high-speed train safety and stability. This paper researches the actual operating state of the auxiliary power supply system of the "Rejuvenation" train. Each sensor of the system is used as network node to construct a Bayesian network. We use the I-ACO-B algorithm to learn structure of Bayesian network, and use the Bayesian parameter estimation algorithm to learn parameters of Bayesian network. Through these two kinds of learning, the auxiliary power supply network, can be constructed. Finally, the network can be verified by actual data.

Abstract:With the increasing complexity of engineering systems, reliability analysis and evaluation of systems with traditional methods can't meet practical engineering requirements. Based on limited experimental conditions, lack of data, complex structure models, insufficient cognitive abilities, and many other issues, people have to consider many uncertain factors in system reliability research. Besides, common cause failure (CCF) has become an important factor of system failure. In this paper, a discrete‐time Bayesian network (DTBN) associated with an eight‐rotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) system is presented to discuss above problems. In this approach, the system is assumed as a two‐state system. After that, interval analysis theory is employed to deal with uncertainty. We consider the four sets of auxiliary propellers in the auxiliary power group as a 3/8 voting system, and β factor model is used to process CCF in the auxiliary power group. The proposed methods prove the validity of proposing interval analysis theory to solve uncertain problems and it is necessary to consider reducing or avoiding CCFs in system.

Abstract:To carry out digital and intelligent research on structural safety assessment methods for rail transport infrastructure, which has an essential impact on the maintenance and management of rail transport infrastructure. This study selects 22 risk indicators, which are then used in a comprehensive evaluation of the operational context of the structure, which aims to develop a holistic risk assessment index system encompassing the interactions between structure, vehicle, and environment. Using a dynamic weight model, we compute node weights and construct a weighted Bayesian network model. This approach addresses the limitations of the conditional independence assumption typical in standard Bayesian network models., thereby addressing the restrictions associated with the conditional independence assumption inherent in the Bayesian network model. The utilization of trapezoidal fuzzy numbers and the maximum noise algorithm to compute network parameters, as well as in the determination of the safety probability of a given structure and the identification of the most probable risk factors associated with it. The findings reveal that the security level of this structure, as determined by a standard Bayesian network, is classified as level I. In contrast, the Level II security status obtained from the weighted Bayesian network corroborates with the fuzzy analytic hierarchy method's results, indicating a significant enhancement in inference accuracy with the weighted approach.

Abstract:Bogie is a pivotal system and plays a critical part in the safety and reliability management of high-speed rail. However, the available bogie system reliability analysis methods lack the consideration of multi-state characteristics, and the common multi-state reliability analysis methods, being an NP-hard problem, lead to low efficiency. In order to overcome these drawbacks, this paper proposes a novel multi-state rail train bogie system reliability analysis approach based on the extended d-MC model. Three different function interactions within the bogie system are considered to build the multi-state bogie system flow network model. Meanwhile, an extended d-MC model is established to remove unnecessary d-MC candidates and duplicates, which greatly enhances the computing efficiency. The bogie system reliability is calculated, and examples are provided. Numerical experiments are carried out for the different operational conditions of the bogie system and are used to test the practicability of the method proposed in this article; it is found that this method outperforms a newly developed method in solving multi-state reliability problems.
Bayesian network-based risk evaluation model for the operational requirements of the China Railway Express under the Belt and Road initiative

Abstract:Abstract The operation of the China Railway Express features numerous links across several regions and countries. Effectively controlling the risks involved in the operation of the China Railway Express is crucial for ensuring safety and efficiency and promoting the sustainable development of the China Railway Express. The Bayesian network-based risk-management model was built corresponding to the actual operation of the China Railway Express; the model used an advanced risk-management theory. The sensitivity analysis of risk factors and Bayesian network inference were realized using the expectation-maximization and clique-tree propagation algorithms. Using the risk-checklist method, 17 risk-related factors were analysed on 17 nodes of the Bayesian network from three perspectives—safety, efficiency and effectiveness—based on expert opinions and the actual operating conditions of the China Railway Express. Data from a sensitivity analysis and evidence inference of the Bayesian network model indicated that the sensitivity coefficients of nodes N01, N04, N07, N08 and N17 of the network were high. Moreover, the risk-occurrence probabilities for nodes N01, N04, N06, N07 and N09 were higher in the case of reverse inference. Our results revealed the crucial factors influencing the risk. The identified risk factors included the stability of the political environment in countries along the route, conditions of station infrastructures and the complexity of the process of changing rails and reloading. Further, risk-management suggestions were provided. By establishing a sound risk-management framework, reliable assessment and management could be realized in accordance with changes in the operating conditions of the China Railway Express.

Abstract:With the development of science and technology, the machine system becomes more and more reliable in the man-machine system. Meanwhile, during to the complexity of human being itself, the operation error of human being becomes more and more severe. The human reliability analysis (HRA) has been a necessary part and an essential content of probability safety analysis in the man-machine system. The perception ability, the judgment or decision ability, and the operation action ability of human being are taking into account, by introducing the key performance shaping factor and error correction capability factor, the human operation action error model and operation mission reliability model was discussed. The characteristics of operator behavior with error correction are discussed. Since the human reliability with the dynamic characteristic, time sequence and the ability of error correction, there are some limitations of event tree analysis method in human reliability analysis. By using the dynamic Bayesian networks theory, the qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis of human operation action reliability in the complex man-machine system was carried out. The method of transform human error event tree into dynamic Bayesian network was given. Finally, the mission reliability of ship’s console cabinet desk for example, the quantitative calculation of human operation action reliability was discussed.

Abstract:Ensuring railway safety is a top priority, with a central focus on preventing accidents. By thoroughly analyzing data from railway accident investigations, we can pinpoint factors and patterns associated with different types of railway accidents. This proactive approach not only helps reduce the frequency of such incidents but also significantly boosts overall railway transportation safety. This paper investigates the impact of various risk factors on railway safety through the analysis of railway accidents by using data-driven Bayesian networks. First, key data representing the frequency of risk factors directly derived from railway accident reports are collected and analyzed. Then, the risk factors are incorporated into causal analysis for different types of railway accidents. Finally, a historical data-driven approach is utilized to model and gain new insights into the key risk factors causing different types of railway accidents. Meanwhile, a Tree-Augmented Naive Bayes (TAN) is employed to construct a model of interdependencies among risk factors, and the model is validated through sensitivity analysis and past accident records. The research findings demonstrate that the crucial risk factors for all types of accidents include undetected track damage, train operator skills, load, braking system conditions, train speed, traction system failures, level crossings, and bridge damage. Additionally, the research results highlight the differential impact of key factors on different types of accidents, providing a most probable explanation for observing the most likely configurations in the model for a specific scenario. This work contributes to accident prevention and safety decision-making.
