Abstract:The k-out-of-n system model is widely applied for the reliability evaluation of many technical systems. Multi-state system modelling is also widely used for representing real systems, whose components can have different levels of performance. For these researches, recently multi-state k-out-of-n systems have been comprehensively studied. In these studies, it is usually assumed that the system has a single task function to complete in a given environment. Moreover, the system or component performance is characterised by one measure, for example “electric power” in generation systems or “flow-rate” in transmission systems. However, this can be a simplification for some real-life engineering systems. For example, an intertwined district heating and electricity system consists of combined heat and power generating units, which can produce both electricity and heat. In this paper, definitions of multi-performance weighted multi-state components are provided and two generalized multi-performance multi-state K¯-out-of-n system models are proposed. Universal generating function approach is developed for the evaluation of such systems, with two numerical examples.

Abstract:： Multi-state is one of the characteristics of advanced manufacturing systems and complex engineered systems. Multi-state reliability theory has received considerable attentions in recent years as it is able to characterize the complicated deteriorating process of systems in a finer fashion. Nevertheless, the most reported works on multi-state system reliability modelling and assessment are developed on the premise that the failure processes between any pair of components are statistically independent. In engineering practices, dependency among components of a system is inevitable. By using Markov models, a new reliability model for multi-state systems is developed to take account of the load distribution mechanism between components. The relation among the load imposed on components, reliability of the entire system, and system structure is examined. On the basis of the proposed reliability model, a two-stage genetic algorithm is put forth to optimize the dynamic load distribution strategy and system configuration in a joint manner to achieve better system reliability measures.

Abstract:Due to the propagation, amplification, and concatenation in a failure process, the reliabilities of repairable multistate complex mechanical systems (RMCMSs) may be affected by a significant fluctuation due to a small exception associated with a reliability indicator. Focused on the problems arising from the lack of propagation relationships among fault modes, functional components, and failure causes in conventional reliability models, a novel framework for reliability modelling is proposed to comprehensively analyse the reliabilities of RMCMSs. First, the reliability models are abstracted as weighted and directed networks with five layers. Second, an improved failure mode and effects analysis (IFMEA) method combined with the D-number method and VIKOR approach is presented to determine the importance of reliability nodes. Third, a cut set of the reliability model is generated by any exception of a reliability indicator by considering the propagation relationships, and the reliability sensibility index is defined to characterize the fluctuations in system reliability. The effectiveness of the proposed framework is demonstrated in an actual reliability modelling application. As an intuitive method, the proposed framework inherits the advantages of conventional models but overcomes the drawbacks of these existing methods. Therefore, this method can be flexibly and efficiently used in the reliability modelling of RMCMSs. Moreover, the approach provides a foundation for comprehensive and dynamic reliability analysis and the failure mechanism mining of RMCMSs, and it can be used in other engineering applications.

Abstract:In this paper, a multi-state system under dynamic load-sharing strategy is studied. The system is consisting of more than one type of components connected in parallel. The performance rate of the component can be increased or decreased, leading to a change of failure rate. Once any component in the system fails, the performance rate of components will be redistributed based on a dynamic load-sharing strategy. The Markov model is used in this paper to characterize the deterioration process of the system and evaluate the system reliability. The proposed model is demonstrated via a numerical example.

Abstract:High reliability and security have become the hallmarks of complex electromechanical systems. Owing to the difficulties in fault data collection, ambiguity and uncertainty have been inevitably associated with complex electromechanical systems. Thus, the ability to perform reliability evaluation using scarce fault data is of immense significance to these machines and is the focus of this study. A similarity based cloud model is proposed to evaluate the running state of complex electromechanical systems. By combining objective and subjective factors, the reliability of complex electromechanical systems is evaluated by calculating the similarity between the cloud models of actual and standardised states. Next, the inverter of an offshore wind turbine is used to verify the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed approach. The cloud model based framework for reliability evaluation inherits the preponderance of the uncertainty problem, overcomes the drawbacks of the current reliability approaches, and provides a theoretical basis, as well as a practical approach for the maintenance and repair of complex electromechanical systems with missing fault data. Additionally, it also provides a new methodology for solving the uncertainty problems caused by paucity of data.

Abstract:Traditional time-based reliability assessment methods evaluate the reliability of a multi-state system (MSS) from a population or a statistical perspective that the reliability of a system is computed purely based upon historical time-to-failure data collected from a large population of identical components or systems. These methods, however, fail to characterize the stochastic behaviors of a specific individual system. In this paper, by utilizing system-level observation history, a dynamic reliability assessment method for MSSs is put forth. The proposed recursive Bayesian formula is able to dynamically update the reliability function of a specific MSS over time by incorporating system-level inspection data. The dynamic reliability function, state probabilities, and remaining useful life distribution of an MSS in residual lifetime are derived for two common cases: the degradation of components follows a homogeneous continuous time Markov process, and a non-homogeneous continuous time Markov process. The effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method are demonstrated via two numerical examples.

Due to the complex structure of multi-state complex systems and the lack of data, information, and knowledge, the uncertainty of the logical relationship between the failure states of systems and components and the uncertainty of related failure data become the key issues in the reliability analysis of multi-state complex systems. In this paper, combined with multi-state fault tree (MSFT), a multi-state reliability assessment framework for complex systems considering uncertainty based on multi-source information fusion and multi-state Bayesian network (MSBN) is proposed. The multi-source information fusion method combines historical data and experts' opinions to solve the uncertainty problem of multi-state failure data in complex equipment systems effectively. Based on the multi-source information fusion method, the calculation method of multi-state prior probability and the construction method of conditional probability are given. By constructing the conditional probability table (CPT), the uncertain logic relationship between the multi-state nodes is effectively expressed, which effectively improves the efficiency of CPT acquisition for MSBN and reduces the workload of experts scoring. Finally, a mud circulating system is taken as an example to prove the proposed method, and the specific calculation process, evaluation results, and some discussions are given. The results show that the proposed method is an effective multi-state reliability analysis method for complex uncertain multi-state systems.

Abstract:The paper presents an approach for evaluating reliability of standby systems composed of multi-state elements with constant state transition rates. Any standby elements can be repaired, whereas no repairs are possible in operation. When an operating element fails the standby element with the best technical state is activated. Time-to-failure distributions of operating elements depend on their states at the time of activation. An iterative algorithm for reliability evaluation based on element state probabilities is suggested. An example of using the algorithm for evaluating reliability of standby system is presented.

Abstract:In this paper, a new network model is developed for better expression of the interaction of a complex electromechanical system. The developed model can reflect the current reliability fluctuation followed by system state disturbances. The Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) data and indicator data from detection and monitoring is collected and processed for the structure and parameters of this network model. Hidden Markov Model (HMM) is used for transforming indicators into the probability of fault causes. The recorded fault statistic data is considered as the prior knowledge, and the current indicator data can be used to renew the prior probability of component failure and system malfunction. With this model, the current component failure probability and system malfunction probability can be obtained.

Abstract:With the aim of tracking the deteriorating process of a specific individual multi-state system consisting of more than one multi-state component, a dynamic reliability assessment method which can utilize system-level observation history to dynamically update the reliability function of multi-state degraded systems is developed in this paper. The current and future state probabilities of components in a specific multi-state degraded system can be updated via the proposed recursive Bayesian formula. The effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method are demonstrated via a water piping system.

Abstract:Component‐based software development is now a widely used software development technique. In this paper, we propose a reliability evaluation model used to evaluate component‐based software systems, focusing on analyzing the effects of different components on software reliability. Our model utilizes the complex network theory based on the state‐based evaluation approach. First, a detailed analysis is made to identify the components used in a software system. Next, the most influential node discovery algorithm in complex network theory is used to calculate the impact factor of each component. Finally, the reliability of the software system is evaluated based on the impact factors. Results show that the proposed model achieves better accuracy compared with conventional models by using the internal structure of the software system during evaluation. The core function of the intelligent multistation manufacturing system is to continuously and stably output a specified number of qualified products which can meet the requirements of production tasks through the machine at each station. Consequently, only the analyzing and modeling of the physical failure of the machine cannot realize the functional healthy state evaluation of the manufacturing system oriented to product quality, nor can it describe the phased degradation characteristics during the task execution. Therefore, a novel evaluation approach of the functional healthy state based on phased state task network (PSTN) theory for the intelligent multistation manufacturing systems is proposed in this study. First, the connotation of a functional healthy state of the intelligent multistation manufacturing system is expounded in combination with the performance state of each component in the system from the perspective of system engineering. Second, the PSTN of the intelligent multistation manufacturing system is established, and an integrated mission reliability model of the system is built on it. Third, a functional healthy state evaluation approach is proposed on the basis of the integrated mission reliability model and fuzzy evidence theory. Finally, a cylinder head manufacturing system is taken as an example to verify the proposed method, and sensitivity and comparative analyses are carried out to illustrate its effectiveness and advantages.

Abstract:In engineering fields, the breakdown of a critical system can result in irreparable consequences, including task failures and even heavy casualties. Equipping systems with protective devices is an effective method to alleviate system failure risk in practical applications. However, existing research primarily focuses on single-component systems supported by a binary-state protective device. Moreover, existing studies assume that system deterioration is only caused by external shocks. For the first time, a multi-state k-out-of-n: F system containing m subsystems with multi-state protective devices is established in this study. In the proposed model, the deterioration of system and protective devices is caused not only by external shocks, but also by internal degradation. In the j-th subsystem, the corresponding protective device activates to work when the number of failed components reaches a threshold. During the operation of the protective device, the degradation rates of components, as well as the impacts and probabilities of adverse shocks on them decrease. The j-th subsystem breaks down once the number of failed components exceeds a critical value kj. Based on the number of failed subsystems, the entire system is categorized into multiple states. Ultimately, the entire system fails when the number of failed subsystems reaches a predetermined value. A combination of the Markov process imbedding approach and finite Markov chain imbedding approach is employed to derive the probabilistic indices for the proposed system. Furthermore, a case study based on an aero-engine turbine system is presented to validate the proposed reliability model.

Abstract:Multi-state networks which not only be connected but also function at a certain performance level exist widely in real-world engineering systems. Resilience provides a new approach for the design and analysis of networks that enhance the ability of systems to withstand and bounce back from disruptive events. Efficient and accurate evaluation method is essential for analyzing and enhancing the resilience of the multi-state networks. This research focuses on the resilience modeling and evaluation method for multi-state networks, in which the states of the components and network follow certain probability distributions. First, a multi-state network performance metric associated with the state distribution of components was proposed. Then, we proposed a semi-Markov-based resilience model to describe the transition of the component state distribution. Third, we proposed a fast-repeated algorithm to enhance resilience evaluation efficiency for multi-state networks such that managers can make timely decisions when disruptive events occur. Finally, a case study is conducted, where the optimal recovery strategy was obtained based on the proposed method. Compared to the distance-based recovery strategy and reliability-based recovery strategy, resilience-based method offers more flexible and timely strategies considering different mission requirements and/or preferences for the design, operation and recovery of multistate networks.

Abstract:This paper proposes a machine learning method for the reliability evaluation of integrated power-gas systems (IPGS) under the uncertain component failure probability distributions. The Random Forest (RF) method is designed to select important features to solve the insufficient quantity of data and the curse of dimensionality problems. The Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) regression algorithm is developed to quantify the relationship between the uncertain parameters and reliability metrics. Moreover, a ten-fold cross-validation method is employed to further improve the accuracy of the regression model. Simulation results on three test systems show that the proposed method can achieve high accuracy for the reliability evaluation.

Abstract:Modern and intelligent manufacturing systems have a prominent multistate feature. However, previous studies of reliability analysis of multistate manufacturing systems mostly focused on the basic reliability of manufacturing systems but disregarded their operating characteristics, which has hindered the development of Prognostics and Health Management technique for intelligent manufacturing systems. Therefore, an evaluation approach of mission reliability for multistate manufacturing systems based on operational quality data is proposed in this paper. First, from the systematic viewpoint of the composition and operational principle of the manufacturing system, the relationship among production task execution state, production equipment degradation state, and produced product quality state is expounded, and the connotation of the mission reliability of multistate manufacturing systems is defined. Second, an extended state task network (ESTN) is presented to organise operational quality data by considering the quality state of work in process (WIP). Third, a fusion model of operational quality data for manufacturing systems is established with the aid of the ESTN, and an operational quality data-oriented evaluation method of mission reliability is been put forward. Finally, a case study of a manufacturing system for a cylinder head is conducted to verify the proposed approach.

A DNN-based reliability evaluation method for multi-state series-parallel systems considering semi-Markov process

Abstract:In order to evaluate the reliability of the multi-state series-parallel system considering semi-Markov process (MSSPS-SMP), the integral equations have been utilized to calculate the state probability distributions. Nevertheless, to solve the formulated integral equations, it is impossible to avoid time-consuming convolution operation for any numerical method, which can result in significant reliability evaluation complexity. To address the above problems, a deep neural network (DNN)-based method is proposed for the reliability evaluation of the MSSPS-SMP. For a multi-state component, the reliability parameters representing the arbitrary distributions of the SMP are firstly extracted as the input feature to DNN, while the corresponding state probability distributions serve as output of DNN naturally. On this basis, the DNN is deployed to establish direct mapping relationship between the reliability parameters and state probability distributions. Instead of repeating complicated calculations of SMP-related convolution operation, the well-trained DNN model can effectively determine the performance distributions of multi-state components given the varying reliability parameters. On this basis, the Lz-transform technique is utilized to develop the unified representations of dynamic reliability models of various multi-state components considering SMP. Combined with the Lz-transform, the time-varying performance distribution of the MSSPS-SMP with complicated structures of several components can be determined.

Abstract:Bogie is a pivotal system and plays a critical part in the safety and reliability management of high-speed rail. However, the available bogie system reliability analysis methods lack the consideration of multi-state characteristics, and the common multi-state reliability analysis methods, being an NP-hard problem, lead to low efficiency. In order to overcome these drawbacks, this paper proposes a novel multi-state rail train bogie system reliability analysis approach based on the extended d-MC model. Three different function interactions within the bogie system are considered to build the multi-state bogie system flow network model. Meanwhile, an extended d-MC model is established to remove unnecessary d-MC candidates and duplicates, which greatly enhances the computing efficiency. The bogie system reliability is calculated, and examples are provided. Numerical experiments are carried out for the different operational conditions of the bogie system and are used to test the practicability of the method proposed in this article; it is found that this method outperforms a newly developed method in solving multi-state reliability problems.
