Abstract:Mg and its alloys are considered as biodegradable metallic implant materials, are attracting great attentions. However, the corrosion resistance and biocompatibility required to be improved according to clinical demands in bone implants. In this study, Ca-deficient hydroxyapatite ceramic coating is fabricated on AZ31 magnesium alloy’s surface by one-step micro-arc oxidation (MAO) in an alkali electrolyte with different calcium glycerophosphate (CaGP) concentrations. The thickness, roughness, morphology, and composition of the coating are dependent on the concentration of CaGP, determining the protective ability of magnesium alloy. The electrochemical test results demonstrated that corrosion resistance of Mg alloy is improved by applying Ca defected hydroxyapatite containing ceramic coatings. In addition, the coating shows a high bonding strength with the substrate with tensile bond strength higher than 35 MPa. Furthermore, the MAO sample shows a longer wear life compared with the substrate. Hydroxyapatite (HA) containing coating with a good combination of corrosion resistance, bonding strength and wear behavior could be obtained by adjusting the concentration of CaGP in the electrolyte solution.
