Abstract:Literature review has found that despite the considerable attention focused on 'digital natives', few studies have carefully investigated the characteristics of this group. The purpose of this study is to contribute to the debate on digital natives by providing a 'piece of evidence' on the digital competence status of a group of Chinese teenagers (ninth grade students) randomly selected from the Jiangdong District in Ningbo City, Zhejiang Province. An Instant Digital Competence Assessment (iDCA) tool, developed by a research group from the University of Florence, was adopted as the measurement tool for the study. Quantitative research was employed and the research design for the study was descriptive in nature. Data analysis results found that the majority of the participating ninth grade students (n = 317) had personal computers (PCs) and the Internet available at home and the average period of time owing a PC was about 5 years. The iDCA results indicated that (1) participants' overall performance in the iDCA was just 'pass' rather than 'good' or 'excellent', which might imply that digital natives in China are not necessarily digitally competent; (2) there were big disparities among participants as regards their digital competence; (3) participants' digital competence differed depending on their schools and their ages; (4) participants' digital competence was not significantly influenced by such factors as having a PC or not, having the Internet or not at home, frequency of computers and Internet use. On the basis of the findings, the study concluded by highlighting the role of education in improving teenagers' digital competence and by recommending the development of well-designed teaching and learning materials for the Chinese K-12 school system.

Abstract:Datafication, the process where users' actions online are pervasively recorded, tracked, aggregated, analysed, and exploited by online services in multiple ways, is becoming increasingly common today. However, we know little about how children, especially non-Western children, perceive such practices. Through one-to-one semi-structured interviews with 36 children aged 11-14 from Chinese middle schools, we examined how Chinese children perceive datafication practices. We identified three knowledge gaps in children's current perceptions of datafication practices online, including their lack of recognition of (i) their data ownership, (ii) data being transmitted across platforms, and (iii) datafication could go beyond video recommendation and include inferences and profiling of their personal aspects. Through contextualising these observations within the Chinese context and its unique online ecosystem, we identified cultural traits in Chinese children's perceptions of datafication. We drew on education theories to discuss how to support the future digital literacy development and design online platforms for Chinese children.
Educational and social correlates of the digital divide for rural and urban children: A study on primary school students in a provincial city of China

Abstract:Over the last decades, the issue of digital divide has received particular attention from international bodies and researchers in Western countries. One of the main reasons for this growing interest is related to the implications that digital inequalities have for social development and particularly for education. Despite the relevance of the issue, there are still few studies on the digital divide in China and even less on Chinese K-12 schools' students. This paper aims at exploring the digital divide issues among Chinese children from an educational and social perspective. Four schools were selected, involving 658 students aged 10–14. Nine hypotheses on Internet inequality indicators (DiMaggio & Hargittai, 2001) and their possible outcomes were tested. The study found that: (1) students' Internet access at home is better than that at school; (2) compared with parents, teachers have more positive influence on students' Internet behaviour; (3) students from rural or migrant schools score lower on all the Internet inequality indicators (digital access, autonomy of use, social support, Internet use and self-efficacy) and are therefore more disadvantaged in Internet usage status than their urban peers; (4) there are no significant gender differences; (5) the more education parents have received, the better the conditions of their children according to the listed Internet inequality indicators; (6) the dimensions of the Internet inequality indicators (technical apparatus, autonomy of use, availability of social support, variation of use) are significantly correlated to students' Internet self-efficacy; (7) there is high correlation between students' Internet self-efficacy and their exploring behaviours of Internet use and their academic performance. Overall, these results are consistent with data from OECD countries and confirm that the digital divide represents a big social challenge, revealing that schools still have to develop effective strategies to balance social and learning opportunities among students.

Abstract:Digital devices are widely used by children, and children nowadays are spending more time online than with other media sources, such as watching television or playing offline video games. In the UK, 44% of children aged five to ten have been provided with their own tablets, with this percentage increasing annually, while in the US, ownership of tablets by children in this age group grew fivefold between 2011 and 2013. Our previous research found that UK children and parents need better support in dealing with online privacy risks. Interestingly, very few research was done on Chinese children and parents. In this report, we present findings from our online survey of 593 Chinese parents with children aged 6-10 in February and March 2019. Our study particularly focused on understanding Chinese parents' awareness and management of their children's online privacy risks. The goal of the survey was to examine the current adoption pattern of digital devices by Chinese families with young children, the concerns Chinese parents have about their children's online activities and the current practices they use for safeguarding their children online. Our findings imply that we need to continue presenting specific guidance to parents in order to support their choice of digital content for their young children. Further, we need to look more deeply into the roles schools are taking in children's online activities, how can we support schools and teachers when they are making recommendations to parents and children.
Parenting approaches and digital technology use of preschool age children in a Chinese community

Abstract:Background: Young children are using digital technology (DT) devices anytime and anywhere, especially with the invention of smart phones and the replacement of desktop computers with digital tablets. Although research has shown that parents play an important role in fostering and supporting preschoolers' developing maturity and decisions about DT use, and in protecting them from potential risk due to excessive DT exposure, there have been limited studies conducted in Hong Kong focusing on parent-child DT use. This study had three objectives: 1) to explore parental use of DTs with their preschool children; 2) to identify the DT content that associated with child behavioral problems; and 3) to investigate the relationships between approaches adopted by parents to control children's DT use and related preschooler behavioral problems. Methods: This exploratory quantitative study was conducted in Hong Kong with 202 parents or guardians of preschool children between the ages of 3 and 6 attending kindergarten. The questionnaire was focused on four aspects, including 1) participants' demographics; 2) pattern of DT use; 3) parenting approach to manage the child's DT use; and 4) child behavioral and health problems related to DT use. Multiple regression analysis was adopted as the main data analysis method for identifying the DT or parental approach-related predictors of the preschooler behavioral problems. Results: In the multiple linear regression model, the 'restrictive approach score' was the only predictor among the three parental approaches (B:1.66, 95% CI: [0.21, 3.11], p < 0.05). Moreover, the viewing of antisocial behavior cartoons by children also significantly increased the tendency of children to have behavioral problem (B:3.84, 95% CI: [1.66, 6.02], p < 0.01). Conclusions: Since preschool children's cognitive and functional abilities are still in the developmental stage, parents play a crucial role in fostering appropriate and safe DT use. It is suggested that parents practice a combination of restrictive, instructive and co-using approaches, rather than a predominately restrictive approach, to facilitate their child's growth and development. Further studies are needed to explore the parent-child relationship and parents' self-efficacy when managing the parent-child DT use, to develop strategies to guide children in healthy DT use.
Emerging Digital Inequality in Early Life: Parenting and Differential Usage of Digital Devices among Urban Preschoolers in China

Abstract:ObjectiveThis study aims to investigate the following questions: (1) how Chinese preschoolers' usage of digital devices differ by their family socioeconomic status (SES), and (2) how socioeconomic differences in children's usage of digital devices can be accounted for by parents' digital parenting attitudes and behaviors.BackgroundScholars in social stratification and inequality have warned about "Digital Inequality" and argued that the fact that people from different socioeconomic backgrounds differ in their access to digital equipment and their knowledge of how to use digital devices effectively would eventually contribute to social inequality. Unfortunately, most of the current studies on digital inequality focus on the population of adults or adolescents; whether and how digital inequality emerges in early life remains heavily understudied.MethodsWe use data from Early Childhood Study-The Great Bay Area (ECS-GB), a regional representative survey conducted in 2018 and designed to assess preschool children's social-emotional and cognitive development in Guangdong, a coastal province in South China. Our analytical sample consists of 11,445 preschool children aged from 3 to 6 with urban hukou.ResultsOur results show that compared with children from lower-SES families, preschoolers from higher-SES families spend less time on digital devices daily, are less likely to use digital devices for prolonged time, and spend significantly less time on non-education purposed and leisure activities. These socioeconomic differences in children's digital usage in terms of time and types of activities are attributable to the fact that parents of higher SES families impose more restrictions, provide more guidance to their children's digital activities, and are more conscious about their children's digital usage in daily life.ConclusionIn contemporary China, digital inequality emerges in early life and such inequality is closely related to family's digital parenting practices.

Abstract:Introduction: How parents think and feel about their children's use of technology can influence how their kids behave online. The family's socioeconomic status (SES) may also affect this influence. In light of this, this research emphasizes the need for more investigation into parental attitudes and the role of SES in shaping how children consume media. Methods: This study surveyed 629 Taiwanese parents to explore their attitudes toward their young children's use of information communication technology (ICT), usage patterns, and the interplay with socioeconomic status. Results: The findings revealed a significant disconnect: although approximately 50% of parents considered above six years old to be a suitable age for children to start ICT, over 80% of children had already engaged with ICT before that age, indicating a large disparity between parental expectations and actual initiation. Furthermore, parents highlighted "learning interest" and "various content" as the most positive impacts of children's ICT use, while "addiction and overreliance" emerged as their primary concern. Notably, parents, as a whole, tended to perceive their child's ICT use more negative than positively, with fathers displaying greater acceptance of negative viewpoints than mothers. Parental attitudes toward children's ICT use were categorized into five clusters, ranging from balanced and optimistic views to value emphasis, conservatism, and negative doubts. This classification underscores the intricate and multifaceted nature of parental perspectives, encompassing both positive and negative outlooks on children's ICT utilization. Discussion: The findings underscore the nuanced character of parents' attitudes toward technology, shaped by the intricacies and challenges posed by the digital era. These insights emphasize that parental attitudes go beyond a simplistic positive-negative divide, reflecting a comprehensive response to the opportunities and complexities inherent in the digital age.

Abstract:Question: Due to the ubiquity of various newly emerging information and communication technologies (ICT), numerous preschoolers have obvious preferences toward electronic devices and interfaces over printed books. Given that excessive exposure to screen usually result in problems in both physical and psychological aspects, it is essential to have a brief overview of the preschoolers' reading and ICT using behavior and a deeper understanding on how parental factors affect children with respect to their reading and ICT using behaviors.Methods: In‐depth interview is employed in this study, the sample of which includes forty parents of twenty preschool children aged from 1.5 years to 6 years. Then we analyzed the data with the means of text coding and correlation analysis.Findings: There was a negative association between child's reading time and screen‐viewing time. The same result occurred among parental reading and ICT behavior. Reading time duration of parents was correlated with that of preschool children. As for ICT using, preschool children frequently learnt from mothers' ICT activities, instead of fathers'.

Abstract:The development of children's digital literacy is essential in the 21st century. Digital technologies have been adopted by both parents and grandparents to enhance children's quality of education, in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals (e.g., SDGs 4 and 17). Many children have been provided with all types of digital tools and e-devices from birth, which puts their caregivers in a challenging position. In that context, investigating the attitudes, beliefs, communication, and practices of caregivers when interacting with young children while utilizing digital technologies is crucial for comprehending the disparity in digital literacy between parents and grandparents. In this study, we adopted a mixed research design to examine Chinese intergenerational caregiving during the COVID-19 pandemic and different types of caregivers' beliefs, practices, and communication with children through various digital tools in the home environment. A caregiver-reported survey was conducted to investigate the primary caregivers' beliefs, practices, and communication using digital media tools with children at home. Intergenerational interviews with 18 families further identified the different methods of caregiving between parents and grandparents. Mixed attitudes were found concerning popular technologies commonly used at home and children's digital literacy practices, and we heard intergenerational concerns about children's use of digital technologies. This study shows that Chinese fathers are generally more supportive of digital practices at home, while mothers are more restrictive of their children's use of digital technology tools. Grandparenting may be overwhelming for Chinese seniors in the 21st century.

Abstract:This study examines the relationship between parental interactions, digital media usage, and health literacy among 19,386 elementary students (ages 6-11) in Guangdong Province, China, using the framework of parental mediation theory. Path analysis revealed that increased digital media usage is associated with decreased health literacy, particularly for short video platforms, which exhibit a significant negative correlation (β = -.335). Parental interaction was found to significantly reduce the use of instant messaging apps (β = -.007) and short video platforms (β = -.008), with the influence being moderated by the student's residence status (boarding or non-boarding). The findings highlight the importance of frequent parental interaction in limiting digital media usage and enhancing health literacy among children. This study suggests that parental mediation theory should pay closer attention to environmental or living status factors, as they can significantly influence its mechanisms of action. Overall, this research contributes to the discourse on digital behavior in childhood and offers evidence-based insights for improving educational and health literacy strategies.

Abstract:This study examined the emergence of digital literacy in early childhood among 2272 parents with at least one child under age six in central China. Findings revealed that: (1) there was a significant age difference in early digital literacy, with television literacy emerging first, followed by touchscreen, artificial intelligence, and personal computer literacy. Gender differences were only observed in television literacy; (2) the home location, home income, home digital resource (HDR), and parent's age significantly correlated with young children's general emergent digital literacy, while family structure, parent's education, and occupation had significant correlations with some specific emergent digital literacy; HDR played a mediation role in the relationship between the home context factors and preschoolers' emergent digital literacy. (3) age of the child, family structure, home income, and HDR significantly contributed to predicting preschoolers'emergent digital literacy. Implications for policy-making and parental education are also addressed.

The Association between Family Socioeconomic Status and Children’s Digital Literacy: The Explanatory Role of Parental Mediation

Abstract:In the current information society, digital literacy has become an indispensable part of individuals’ overall literacy. Thus, investigating the factors influencing digital literacy is of theoretical and practical significance, especially for developing children. Against this background, the present study examined the association between family socioeconomic status and children’s digital literacy and the mediating roles of active and restrictive parental internet mediation in this association. A total of 1050 Chinese students ranging from Grades 4 to 8 completed questionnaires in their classrooms. Regression-based analyses showed that (1) family socioeconomic status was positively associated with digital literacy and (2) active parental mediation could significantly mediate this relationship, but the mediating effect of restrictive parental mediation was insignificant. This research not only deepens our understanding of the factors affecting digital literacy but also provides an empirical reference point for interventions to improve children’s digital literacy.

Abstract:In the digital age, Information and Communications Technology (ICT) has enabled learning to happen everywhere, leading to a shift of schooling to the home field and strengthening parents' educational responsibilities. Meanwhile, it may also cause the digital divide and digital reproduction, thereby exacerbating educational inequality. Against this backdrop, this study focused on parental digital involvement in online learning and introduced an emerging concept, digital capital, to understand the differences in parental involvement across socio‐economic backgrounds at the three levels of the digital divide. Drawing from the analysis of 90 Chinese parents' self‐narrated data, this paper identified four types of parental digital involvement according to parents' digital competence and ICT acceptance, and the conversion processes of different forms of capital underlying parental digital involvement were also clarified. The findings from this study expanded the theoretical understanding of inherited cultural capital and social reproduction in online learning in the context of educational digitization.

Abstract:This paper presents Chinese heritage parents' perspectives on young children's use of technology as a tool for language and cultural learning. Growing up with Confucian heritage culture, some Chinese parents have particular cultural beliefs about learning that value effortful learning practices and the social context of learning. However, some Chinese parents believe technology is just a tool for entertainment and keeps children away from social interaction, which leads to their preference of print‐based literacy practices at home. Four parents from different families whose children were between the ages of four to five participated in this study. These parents were interviewed about their experience and history of using technology and their thoughts about technology as a tool for language and cultural learning. Four narratives were constructed to describe parents' experiences, histories, opinions, cultural values and beliefs. Parents' perspectives were influenced by a variety of intertwined factors, including their own childhood language learning experiences, their histories of using technology, their cultural values and beliefs about learning, the purpose of technological experiences, and the quality of available technological resources. Pedagogical implications for using technology with children and communicating with parents are discussed.

Abstract:This paper examines how family atmosphere, parental self-efficacy, parenting methods and children's patterns of mobile device use result in negative outcomes for children's use of mobile devices. The hierarchical multiple regression analysis found that a stressful and conflictive family atmosphere and higher dependence on mobile devices promote negative outcomes. The self-efficacy of parents in helping their children to avoid the negative outcomes was also found to be positive associated the actual negative outcomes that their children had experienced in using mobile devices. Data were collected from a sample of 1561 students from 39 secondary schools in Hong Kong, including students studying at the Form one to Form five levels (equivalent to the seventh to eighth grade) and 1233 of their parents. Hierarchical linear regression analysis was applied to examine the magnitude of the associations between these variables. The paper highlights the importance of avoiding a tense atmosphere and conflicts between parents and children. For service providers, this paper provides a comprehensive reference to understand how parents and children think about family dynamics and relationships under the impact of technological development on individual families. Also, parents would be more advantageous if they were more efficacious about themselves in helping children to avoid the negative outcomes. This study can help service providers determine which intervention approaches can effectively support families in managing parent–child conflicts, developing cohesiveness, and facilitating children's proper use of new technologies.

The status quo, contributors, consequences and models of digital overuse/problematic use in preschoolers: A scoping review

Abstract:Digital devices play a critical role in preschoolers’ learning and development. Despite the evidence that digital devices use may facilitate preschoolers’ learning and development, their overuse/problematic use has become a global concern as the popularity and widespread use of digital devices. This scoping review aims to synthesize the empirical evidence to identify the status quo, influential factors, developmental outcomes, and models of overuse/problematic use in preschoolers. This search has identified 36 studies published in international peer-reviewed journals during 2001–2021, converging into four common topics: the current situation, the influential factors, the consequences, and the models. First, the average percentages of overuse and problematic use across the studies collected in this research were 48.34%, and 26.83%, separately. Second, two influential factors were identified: (1) children’s characteristics and (2) parental and family factors. Third, early digital overuse/problematic use was found to have a negative impact on the following domains: (1) physical health, (2) psychosocial health, (3) problematic behaviors, and (4) cognitive development; Fourth, most relevant studies adopted general linear models, while few of them adopted experimental designs. Finally, the implications for future studies and practical improvements are also addressed.

Abstract:This study examines the correlation between adolescent electronic device usage and parent-child conflicts. Through literature review and empirical research, we found a moderate positive correlation, primarily due to communication barriers and excessive device use. To address these issues, the paper proposes key strategies: fostering open family communication, setting reasonable device-use regulations, encouraging diverse interests, and providing digital literacy education. These approaches are essential for enhancing family education and promoting the healthy growth of adolescents. By offering a concise understanding of this relationship, the research provides practical guidance to families, schools, and society, facilitating harmonious family development.

Parents as Agents of Influence on Children's Digital Skills Development

Abstract:Transition to the digital environment transforms the schemas of social interaction including the relationship between parents and their children. Many parents who lack digital competence however are called upon to become agents of ‘digital socialization’ for their kids who step into the world of gadgets from an early age.Current study explores parents competence (including, digital); their attitudes towards developing digital competence of their children; their coping strategies in the situations of child addiction to the digital gadgets, computer games and the Internet use; as well as their request to the education system in line with its ubiquitous digitalization. As a research method the authors have chosen the two-stage survey in which 118 participants took part — the parents of elementary school students. The data was analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. As a result the parents were clustered into several groups on the basis of: their digital attitudes (supporters and antagonists) and their level of digital competence (low-medium-high). Further the data was analyzed within each cluster. The study has revealed that the majority of parents report themselves as competent (60%) or highly competent (17%) digital users. Positive relationships were identified between the parents' digital competence level and 1) their digital attitudes — the higher the level of competence — the more positive were the attitudes; 2) parents active participation in their children’s digital skills development and acknowledging children’s agency in the process of digital self-education. The results reflect the range of parents' opinions which must be taken into account when assisting families in the process of child development and socialization.
