Abstract:The study of the weak-ties phenomenon has a long and well-documented history, the research into the application of this social phenomenon has recently attracted increasing attention. However, a further exploration of the reasons behind the weak-ties phenomenon is still challenging. Fortunately, data-driven network science provides a novel way with substantial explanatory power to analyze the causal mechanism behind social phenomena. Inspired by this perspective, we propose an approach to further explore the driving factors behind the temporal weak-ties phenomenon. We find that the obvious intuition underlying the weak-ties phenomenon is incorrect, and often large numbers of unknown mutual friends associated with these weak ties is one of the key reasons for the emergence of the weak-ties phenomenon. In particular, scientific collaborators with weak ties prefer to be involved in direct collaboration rather than share ideas with mutual colleagues —there is a natural tendency to collapse short strong chains of connection.

Abstract:The authors analyzed data from multiple large-scale randomized experiments on LinkedIn's People You May Know algorithm, which recommends new connections to LinkedIn members, to test the extent to which weak ties increased job mobility in the world's largest professional social network. The experiments randomly varied the prevalence of weak ties in the networks of over 20 million people over a 5-year period, during which 2 billion new ties and 600,000 new jobs were created. The results provided experimental causal evidence supporting the strength of weak ties and suggested three revisions to the theory. First, the strength of weak ties was nonlinear. Statistical analysis found an inverted U-shaped relationship between tie strength and job transmission such that weaker ties increased job transmission but only to a point, after which there were diminishing marginal returns to tie weakness. Second, weak ties measured by interaction intensity and the number of mutual connections displayed varying effects. Moderately weak ties (measured by mutual connections) and the weakest ties (measured by interaction intensity) created the most job mobility. Third, the strength of weak ties varied by industry. Whereas weak ties increased job mobility in more digital industries, strong ties increased job mobility in less digital industries.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to investigate whether weak ties play an important role in explaining criminal activities. We first develop a model where individuals learn about crime opportunities by interacting with other peers. These interactions can take the form of either strong or weak ties. We find that increasing the percentage of weak ties induces more transitions from non-crime to crime and thus the crime rate in the economy increases. This is because, when the percentage of weak ties is high, delinquents and non-delinquents are in close contact with each other. We then test these predictions using the U.S. National Longitudinal Survey of Adolescent Health (AddHealth), which contains unique detailed informations on friendship relationships among teenagers. The theoretical predictions of our model are confirmed by the empirical analysis since we find that weak ties, as measured by friends of friends, have a positive impact on criminal activities.

The present paper tests five hypotheses of this theory in the setting of a multidisciplinary social network of biological scientists. Abstract:In this work, we challenge the assumption that weak ties play uniquely important social support roles on social network sites, particularly regarding informational support. To overcome methodological limitations of earlier research, we present a mixed-methods study. Forty-one participants were interviewed and asked to identify five weak, medium, and strong ties each and to report on perceived and actually received social support (emotional, informational, instrumental, and appraisal) associated with each. Complicating traditional understandings of “the strength of weak ties,” the qualitative analyses of actual support events show that both emotional and informational support is provided by strong ties. In an additional quantitative between-subjects study design, 352 participants were asked about various aspects of a weak, medium, or strong tie. These results indicate that participants valued their strong ties more regarding every form of support. Although there were only weak correlations between perceived and recalled actually received support, people also report actual support events with strong ties to be more helpful—overall suggesting the strength of strong ties.

Abstract:Granovetter's "strength of weak ties" hypothesizes that isolated social ties offer limited access to external prospects, while heterogeneous social ties diversify one's opportunities. We analyze the most complete record of college student interactions to date (approximately 80,000 interactions by 290 students -- 16 times more interactions with almost 3 times more students than previous studies on educational networks) and compare the social interaction data with the academic scores of the students. Our first finding is that social diversity is negatively correlated with performance. This is explained by our second finding: highly performing students interact in groups of similarly performing peers. This effect is stronger the higher the student performance is. Indeed, low performance students tend to initiate many transient interactions independently of the performance of their target. In other words, low performing students act disassortatively with respect to their social network, whereas high scoring students act assortatively. Our data also reveals that highly performing students establish persistent interactions before mid and low performing ones and that they use more structured and longer cascades of information from which low performing students are excluded.

Abstract:Social capital is important for organizational performance, but it can be a challenge for new firms to establish exchange relationships. While studies have focused on founder-level social ties and network effects on firm survival or performance, less attention has been given to the role of social capital within the community. We theorize that founder social ties are related to community social capital, which fosters varying levels of business opportunities. These relationships and business opportunities influence start-up survival. We test our hypotheses for a longitudinal cohort of new start-ups using Kauffman Firm Survey data merged with community social capital data. Our baseline model finds that a founder's weak tie relationships—not strong ties—are associated with higher odds of start-up survival. Furthermore, we find that community-level social capital increases survival odds, particularly for founders who receive funding from weak-tie networks. Our study furthers our understanding of how community-level social engagement shapes founders' social networks and firm survival odds through increased possibilities for exchange relationships.

Abstract:We raise two challenges concerning the validity of arguments underlying Granovetter's strength of weak ties (SWT) thesis: ( a) whether weak ties are actually bridges, i.e., they help reach more socially distant actors than strong ties, and ( b) whether weak ties transmit information effectively enough so that weak ties’ alleged structural properties make them more useful than strong ties. In the course of reviewing subsequent research that has made progress in addressing these challenges, we identify both potential limits and possibilities for the SWT thesis. We argue for the importance of identifying how actors’ agency—i.e., the way people use their ties—may affect social networks’ value. Abstract:Abstract We present the first complete verification of Granovetter’s theory of social networks using a massive dataset, i.e. DBLP computer science bibliography database. For this purpose, we study a coauthorship network, which is considered one of the most important examples that contradicts the universality of this theory. We achieve this goal by rejecting the assumption of the symmetry of social ties. Our approach is grounded in well-established heterogeneous (degree-based) mean-field theory commonly used to study dynamical processes on complex networks. Granovetter’s theory is based on two hypotheses that assign different roles to interpersonal, information-carrying connections. The first hypothesis states that strong ties carrying the majority of interaction events are located mainly within densely connected groups of people. The second hypothesis maintains that these groups are connected by sparse weak ties that are of vital importance for the diffusion of information—individuals who have access to weak ties have an advantage over those who do not. Given the scientific collaboration network, with strength of directed ties measured by the asymmetric fraction of joint publications, we show that scientific success is strongly correlated with the structure of a scientist’s collaboration network. First, among two scientists, with analogous achievements, the one with weaker ties tends to have the higher h-index, and second, teams connected by such ties create more cited publications.

Abstract:Long ties, the social ties that bridge different communities, are widely believed to play crucial roles in spreading novel information in social networks. However, some existing network theories and prediction models indicate that long ties might dissolve quickly or eventually become redundant, thus putting into question the long-term value of long ties. Our empirical analysis of real-world dynamic networks shows that contrary to such reasoning, long ties are more likely to persist than other social ties, and that many of them constantly function as social bridges without being embedded in local networks. Using a novel cost-benefit analysis model combined with machine learning, we show that long ties are highly beneficial, which instinctively motivates people to expend extra effort to maintain them. This partly explains why long ties are more persistent than what has been suggested by many existing theories and models. Overall, our study suggests the need for social interventions that can promote the formation of long ties, such as mixing people with diverse backgrounds.

Abstract:Individuals not only have a natural tendency to interact with those who are demographically similar, but also have instrumental motives to contact diverse others and those of a higher status. This study investigates two kinds of instrumental interaction – horizontal diversity the tendency to socialise with diverse others and upper reachability the tendency to socialise with high-status leaders – in the development of social capital within organisations. The empirical results suggest that horizontal diversity predicts higher network centrality, but upper reachability has an inverted U-shaped effect. It is theoretically postulated that the mechanism by which instrumental interaction creates social capital. The results also suggest that the effect of upper reachability within organisational networks is much more complex than in general social networks, due to higher interdependence and competitiveness.
Multidimensional Tie Strength and Economic Development

Abstract:The strength of social relations has been shown to affect an individual's access to opportunities. To date, however, the correspondence between tie strength and population's economic prospects has not been quantified, largely because of the inability to operationalise strength based on Granovetter's classic theory. Our work departed from the premise that tie strength is a unidimensional construct (typically operationalized with frequency or volume of contact), and used instead a validated model of ten fundamental dimensions of social relationships grounded in the literature of social psychology. We built state-of-the-art NLP tools to infer the presence of these dimensions from textual communication, and analyzed a large conversation network of 630K geo-referenced Reddit users across the entire US connected by 12.8M social ties created over the span of 7 years. We found that unidimensional tie strength is only weakly correlated with economic opportunities (R2=0.30), while multidimensional constructs are highly correlated (R2=0.62). In particular, economic opportunities are associated to the combination of: i) knowledge ties, which bridge geographically distant groups, facilitating the knowledge dissemination across communities; and ii) social support ties, which knit geographically close communities together, and represent dependable sources of social and emotional support. These results point to the importance of developing high-quality measures of tie strength in network theory.

Abstract:Disentangling the effects of weak ties on creativity, the present study separated, both theoretically and empirically, the effects of the size and strength of actors' idea networks and examined their joint impact while simultaneously considering the separate, moderating role of network diversity. I hypothesized that idea networks of optimal size and weak strength were more likely to boost creativity when they afforded actors access to a wide range of different social circles. In addition, I examined whether the joint effects of network size, strength, and diversity on creativity were further qualified by the openness to experience personality dimension. As expected, results indicated that actors were most creative when they maintained idea networks of optimal size, weak strength, and high diversity and when they scored high on the openness dimension. The implications of these results are discussed.

The paradox of weak ties in 55 countries

Abstract:People find jobs through their social networks using ties of different strengths. Intuitively weak ties might be less useful because people communicate less often with them, or more useful because they provide novel information. Granovetter's early work showed that more job-seekers get help via acquaintances than friends (Granovetter, 1973). However, recent work on job-finding (Gee et al., 2017) shows an apparent paradox of weak ties in the United States: most people are helped through one of their numerous weak ties, but a single stronger tie is significantly more valuable at the margin. Although some studies have addressed the importance of weak ties in job finding within specific countries, this is the first paper to use a single dataset and methodology to compare the importance of weak ties across countries. Here, we use de-identified data from almost 17 million social ties in 55 countries to document the widespread existence of this paradox of weak ties across many societies. More people get jobs where their weak ties work. However, this is not because weak ties are more helpful than strong ties – it is because they are more numerous. In every country, the likelihood of going to work where an individual friend works is increasing – not decreasing – with tie strength. Yet, there is substantial variation in the added value of a strong tie at the margin across these countries. We show that the level of income inequality in a country is positively correlated with the added value of a strong tie, so that individual strong ties matter more when there is greater income inequality.

A Comprehensive Analysis of Social Tie Strength: Definitions, Prediction Methods, and Future Directions

Abstract:The rapid growth of online social networks has underscored the importance of understanding the intensity of user relationships, referred to as "tie strength." Over the past few decades, extensive efforts have been made to assess tie strength in networks. However, the lack of ground-truth tie strength labels and the differing perspectives on tie strength among researchers have complicated the development of effective prediction methods for real-world applications. In our study, we first categorize mainstream understandings of tie strength into seven standardized definitions and verify their effectiveness by investigating the class distributions and correlations across these definitions. We also draw key insights into tie resilience from the perspective of tie dissolution that (1) stronger ties are more resilient than weaker ones, and (2) this tie resiliency ratio increases as the network evolves. We then conduct extensive experiments to evaluate existing tie strength prediction methods under these definitions, revealing that (1) neural network methods capable of learning from semantic features hold great potential for high performance, (2) models struggle under definitions that offer limited understandings of tie strength in the network, (3) existing models face imbalance issues that cannot be addressed by traditional quantity imbalance techniques, and (4) different definitions of tie strength allow for the inference of not only the current state but also the future state of a tie. Building on these findings, we propose strategies to improve existing methods and suggest several promising directions for future research. Measuring Strength of Ties in Social Network

Abstract:Measuring the strength of ties has been a fundamental task for a long time. However, most of previous work treated it as classifying a tie as strong or weak and were not able to quantitatively estimate the strength, which limits their scope of contribution. To tackle the problem, through leveraging user similarities and social interactions, we propose a latent variable model to calculate a continuous value that measures the strength. By bringing real users as judge, we demonstrate that the proposed method can outperform previous methods. Further, we utilize it to measure the strength of ties among a large set of microblogging users, and conduct statistical analysis on triads. We find that comparing to other types of triads, the one with three significantly strong ties are more likely to be created, which verifies the theory of sociology.

Abstract:This article introduces the expanded network theory and demonstrates the heuristic value of its construct of strong-ties and weak-ties rationalities. This construct is derived from the network theory of Granovetter and corroborated with evolutionary biology and psychological studies on group processes. This construct has wide-ranging implications and applications for cultural and cross-cultural psychology. It informs our efforts toward cultural sensitivity in theory and research design and offers a new tool for cultural analysis. In particular, it can serve as a useful framework to investigate cultures in transition in the globalizing era. Insights into strong-ties and weak-ties rationalities may even contribute to shaping the future of the human society.

Capturing Tie Strength with Algebraic Topology

Abstract:The association between tie strength and social structure is a fundamental topic in the social sciences. We study this association by analyzing tie strength in higher-order networks, an increasingly relevant model which can encode group interactions between three or more individuals. First, we introduce three measures based on algebraic topology which characterize the network context and influence of an edge. Our experimental results across 15 datasets indicate that these measures outperform standard network proxies in estimating tie strength. We further find that these measures can replicate and explain a puzzle wherein certain bridging ties are surprisingly strong. We then consider a single centrality measure which combines the three initial measures, is highly inversely related to tie strength, and can be interpreted through an information exchange process which highlights ties that have access to useful information. In this sense, we are able to illuminate the information advantages of weak ties due to their network position.
