Abstract:Bismuth ferrite has been under intense research for many years as it can exhibit first- and second-order transitions where all the phases have distinct properties encapsulating various exciting phenomena. This work reports a computational study of bismuth ferrite and its varied phases using density functional theory with the implementation of Hubbard correction for increased accuracy. The proposed method is validated through Linear Response Theory using Quantum ESPRESSO. The phase transition and the mechanical properties are explored by calculating elastic tensors for different polymorphs. A negative Poisson's ratio for the tetragonal phase supporting its growth in compressive environments is predicted. The electronic properties of different phases of bismuth ferrite are explored, which helps in understanding properties such as charge transfer excitation, metal–insulator transition, ferroelectric nature based on lone pair charges and orbital hybridization. The phonon modes of different phases are also investigated.

Abstract:The electronic structure, phase transition pressure and mechanical properties of light rare-earth bismuthides (PrBi, NdBi, PmBi and SmBi) have been investigated by full geometry optimization using Vienna Ab-Initio Simulation Package (VASP) which has been used in combination with the projector augmented wave (PAW) method and the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) over the local density approximation (LDA) for exchange-correlation functional. We focus our attention on the lattice constants and elastic constants of these compounds. These compounds undergo a phase transition from the NaCl (B1) structure to the body-centered tetragonal (BCT) structure. We also report the density of states (DOS) of these rare earth bismuthides. In the case of PrBi and NdBi, the 4f states are treated as valence states. The effects of on-site Coulomb repulsion and the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) on the electronic structure are also studied.

Abstract:The optical and electrical properties of bismuth ferrite thin films obtained by high-frequency magnetron sputtering in an atmosphere of argon and oxygen (80%+20%) has been studied. Investigations of the optical properties have shown that for polycrystalline bismuth ferrite films the optical band gap is ~2.3 eV, which is in the range of given in the literature values. The dependences of the specific electrical conductivity on the magnitude of the electric field has been studied for the synthesized films. It has been established that the electrical conductivity does not depend on the electric field strength up to the value of E=2.1·10 6 V/m. The experimental results are discussed in terms of the model of charge carrier injection from aluminum electrode into the conduction band of bismuth ferrite. Abstract:In this work, Bi 1-x La x FeO 3 [0 ≤ x ≤ 0.08, step 0.02] was successfully prepared by the co-precipitation method. The as-synthesized samples were investigated by using XRD, SEM, FT-IR, and UV–vis spectroscopy. To get a deep insight into its properties, Density Functional Theory (DFT) was also performed. Calculations have been executed using Wien2k code by employing LDA + U. XRD patterns revealed hexagonal perovskite structure with R3c space group having average crystallite size from 19 to 39 nm. Rietveld refinement was also performed to identify the different phases presented. SEM results showed a spherical-like morphology. UV–vis spectroscopy results showed that the energy band gap decreased by increasing lanthanum substitution. DFT calculations revealed optical absorption onsets of 2 eV, 2.1 eV, 1.98 eV and 1.86 eV for Bi 1-x La x FeO 3 samples for pure and substituted bismuth ferrite were in good agreement with experimental results. Because of these qualities, these materials are excellent candidates for various applications including electromagnetic attenuation, switching and microwave devices.

Abstract:Lanthanum substituted bismuth ferrites (Bi1-xLaxFeO3) (x = 0.0, 0.015, 0.03, 0.045 and 0.06) was successfully synthesized by using co-precipitation method. Rare earth substitution in bismuth ferrites enhanced the leakage current which is one of the problems faced by the pure bismuth ferrites. The prepared samples were investigated by XRD, SEM, EDX, TEM, FT-IR, UV–vis spectroscopy, BET, LCR for dielectric measurements, VSM for magnetic properties and ferroelectric for electric polarization. XRD pattern showed that the structure of bismuth ferrite was rhombohedral distorted perovskite structure of space group R3c and average crystallite size was determined to increase (19 nm to 35 nm) with increase in lanthanum concentration. Morphology of SEM images was found to be spherical shape. TEM shows average particle size increases from 35 nm to 50 nm. Metal-oxide bonds at 440 cm−1 and 539 cm−1 in IR spectra confirmed the perovskite structure of bismuth ferrites. UV–visible spectroscopy revealed that energy band gap decreased by increasing the Lanthanum concentration. BET shows the surface area increased from 4.79 m2/g to 9.03 m2/g. Dielectric constant increases by increasing the lanthanum concentration. AC conductivity showed maximum value at higher frequency nearly equal to 11 Ω cm−1. Electric modulus gradually increased by increasing frequency which was equal to 4.2 k Ω. Magnetic susceptibility increased by increasing the concentration and maximum value 0.008 cm3/g was observed for (x = 0.06). Magnetization (Ms), remanence (Mr), polarization (Pr) increased whereas coercivity decreased with increasing lanthanum substitution. Such properties make these materials as potential candidates for microwave devices and electromagnetic shielding application.

Abstract:One of the most recent developments in the area of modern optics arises due to perovskite materials. The ABO3 perovskite materials like bismuth ferrite is an appealing alternative for various optical devices. Hence, in the present study, Praseodymium (Pr) and Manganese (Mn) co-substituted bismuth ferrite ceramics are prepared by the modified sol-gel method and the correlation between structural and optical properties with the variation in co-substitution concentration has been investigated. Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction patterns demonstrates a structural phase change in crystal symmetry from rhombohedral to orthorhombic phase with the increase in concentration for x ≥ 0.025. Lattice deformation in the co-substituted samples is confirmed by Fourier transform infrared and Raman spectra. UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra confirm the strong absorption of light in the visible region. Furthermore, optical energy band gap decreases from 1.95 to 1.50 eV with increase in concentration from x = 0.000 to x = 0.100. The refractive index attains the maximum value i.e. 6.16 for x = 0.025 whereas it drops to minimum value of 4.06 for x = 0.100. This demonstrates that the structural modification in bismuth ferrite can be used to tune its optical parameters for the device applications.

Abstract:Structural, micro-structural and electrical properties of barium bismuth vanadate Ba(Bi0.5V0.5)O3 ceramics were investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of the prepared material confirmed the formation of the compound with monoclinic crystal system. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the compound exhibits well-defined grains that are uniformly distributed throughout the surface of the sample. Dielectric properties of the compound were studied as a function of temperature at different frequencies. An observation of dielectric anomaly at 295 °C is due to ferroelectric phase transition that was later confirmed by the appearance of hysteresis loop. Detailed studies of complex impedance spectroscopy have provided a better understanding of the relaxation process and correlations between the microstructure–electrical properties of the materials. The nature of frequency dependence of ac conductivity obeys the Debye power law. The dc conductivity, calculated from the ac conductivity spectrum, shows the negative temperature coefficient of resistance behavior similar to that of a semiconductor.

Abstract:Bismuth ferrite (BFO) is a prime candidate for room-temperature magnetoelectric coupling and multiferroic applications. The rhombohedral R3c phase of BFO is the source of many properties, but the phase purity and oxygen vacancies are still the biggest obstacles to its real-world application. Considering these facts, the present work investigates the effects of oxygen vacancies on the functional properties through manipulation of drying temperatures of spin-cast films, especially at temperatures around 280 °C, where both the secondary phase and oxygen vacancies are prevalent. One of the biggest sources of oxygen vacancy is bismuth volatilisation and our work deals with the situation head-on uncovering the effect of bismuth volatilisation on functional properties. The structural properties were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), and deeper insights into the surface topography of the samples were obtained using AFM imaging. The electrical and dielectric characteristics help distinguish and analyse the samples in terms of the presence of resistive switching. PUND studies were performed to determine the ferroelectric properties of the samples. A fifty percent reduction in the oxygen vacancies in the presence of secondary phases was observed when compared with the phase-pure sample, as shown by the XPS analysis. Deeper insights were provided into the valence band spectra by first-principles studies. This work shows that phase purity may not be the singular condition for enhancing functional properties, and fine-tuning the presence of secondary phases and oxygen vacancies may be the way forward. The ferroelectric polarisation in one of the samples exhibits a notably higher value when using chemical solution deposition methods, making it a promising candidate for memory devices.

Abstract:Ferroelectric materials attract much attention for applications in resistive memory devices due to the large current difference between insulating and conductive states and the ability of carefully controlling electronic transport via the polarization set-up. Bismuth ferrite films are of special interest due to the combination of high spontaneous polarization and antiferromagnetism, implying the possibility to provide multiple physical mechanisms for data storage and operations. Macroscopic conductivity measurements are often hampered to unambiguously characterize the electric transport, because of the strong influence of the diverse material microstructure. Here, we studied the electronic transport and resistive switching phenomena in polycrystalline bismuth ferrite using advanced conductive atomic force microscopy (CAFM) at different temperatures and electric fields. The new approach to the CAFM spectroscopy and corresponding data analysis are proposed, which allow deep insight into the material band structure at high lateral resolution. Contrary to many studies via macroscopic methods, postulating electromigration of the oxygen vacancies, we demonstrate resistive switching in bismuth ferrite to be caused by the pure electronic processes of trapping/releasing electrons and injection of the electrons by the scanning probe microscopy tip. The electronic transport was shown to be comprehensively described by the combination of the space charge limited current model, while a Schottky barrier at the interface is less important due to the presence of the built-in subsurface charge.

Abstract:Multiferroic bismuth ferrite Bi_2Fe_4O_9 (BFO) ceramic was synthesized by conventional solid state reaction route. X-ray diffraction and Rietveld refinement show formation of single phase ceramic with orthorhombic crystal structure (space group Pbam). The morphological study depicted a well-defined grain of size $\simeq$2{\mu}m. The optical studies were carried out by using UV-Vis spectrophotometer which shows a band gap of 1.53 eV and a green emission spectrum at 537 is observed in the Photoluminescence study. The frequency dependent dielectric study at various temperature revealed that the dielectric constant decreases with increase in frequency. A noticeable peak shift towards higher frequency with increasing temperature is observed in the frequency dependent dielectric loss plot. The impedance spectroscopy shows a substantial shift in imaginary impedance (Z") peaks toward the high frequency side described that the conduction in material favoring the long range motion of mobile charge carriers. The presence of non-Debye type multiple relaxations has been confirmed by complex modulus analysis. The frequency dependent ac conductivity at different temperatures indicates that the conduction process is thermally activated. The variation of dc conductivity exhibited a negative temperature coefficient of resistance behavior. The activation energy calculated from impedance, modulus and conductivity data confirmed that the oxygen vacancies play a vital role in the conduction mechanism.

Abstract:Nowadays, the electro-electronic industry and scientific community have a great interest in improving memory devices. A candidate is the bismuth ferrite owing to the coexistence of ferroelectricity and anti-ferromagnetism at room temperature, however, a high leakage current harms their ferroelectric properties. Thus, bismuth ferrite and barium titanate solutions improve the ferroelectric properties of bismuth ferrite and optimize the magnetoelectric coupling factor. This system is called multiferroic, materials exhibit the coexistence of ferromagnetic, ferroelectric, or ferro-elastic orders, which is of interest to the scientific physics community and electronic industry. In this paper, bismuth ferrite-barium titanate system around the morphotropic phase boundary was studied and analyzed. It was observed changes in the structural properties in function of barium titanate content. Calcination temperature was determined from thermogravimetric analysis curves to powders of bismuth ferrite-barium titanate system. Ceramic bodies were densified conventionally. Archimedes' method was used for density measure. Ceramics with densities greater than 95% were obtained. 93% of the perovskite phase was obtained from structural results. Finally, structural properties were presented and analyzed using Mossbauer spectroscopy as complementary technique. These analyses are very important in solid state physics because to contribute to understanding the phenomenology and synthesis process of multiferroic materials.
Density Functional Theory Plus U Study of Vacancy Formations in Bismuth Ferrite

Abstract:First-principles density functional theory plus U study on the formation enthalpy of BiFeO3 and the intrinsic vacancies was performed. The formation enthalpy of BiFeO3 from oxides is only −0.2 eV, indicating that BiFeO3 could easily decompose into Bi2O3 and Fe2O3 under thermal or electrical stresses. It is found that the vacancy induced local distortions have insignificant effect on the ferroelectric property, thanks to the high stability of the ferroelectric configuration in BiFeO3. Moreover, Bi and Fe vacancies have comparable formation energies, and become dominant in the oxygen rich conditions, leading to p-type conductivity.
Magneto-electric decoupling in bismuth ferrite

Abstract:It is still under intensive discussion, how magnetoelectric coupling actually occurs at the atomic scale in multiferroic BiFeO3. Nuclear solid-state techniques monitor local fields at the atomic scale. Using such an approach, we show that, contrary to our own expectation, ferroelectric and magnetic ordering in bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3 or BFO) decouple at the unit-cell level. Time differential perturbed angular correlation (TDPAC) data at temperatures below, close, and above the magnetic Néel temperature show that the coupling of the ferroelectric order to magnetization is completely absent at the bismuth site. It is common understanding that the antiferromagnetic order and the cycloidal ordering due to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction generate a net zero magnetization of the sample cancelling any magnetoelectric effect at the macroscopic level. Our previous data show that a very large coupling of magnetic moment and electrical distortions arises on the magnetic sub-lattice (Fe-site). The oxygen octahedra around the iron site experience a large tilt due to the onset of magnetic ordering. Nevertheless, the Bi-containing complementary sub-lattice carrying the ferroelectric order is practically unaffected by this large structural change in its direct vicinity. The magnetoelectric coupling thus vanishes already at the unit cell level. These experimental results agree well with an ab-initio density functional theory (DFT) calculation.

Abstract:This communication reports the effect of Iron (Fe) and Lithium (Li) co-doping on the structural, dielectric and electrical properties of Ba 0.8 Sr 0.2 TiO 3 ; i.e. (Fe 0.5 Li 0.5 ) 0.1 Ba 0.7 Sr 0.2 TiO 3 (FLBST). The FLBST composite was synthesized by the solid-state mixed oxide method at 1400 °C for 12h. The crystalline phase formation has been confirmed by the X-ray diffraction technique and analyzed through the Rietveld Analysis using X'Pert Highscore plus software. From the XRD analysis, lattice parameters and the average crystallite size was calculated. The electrical properties of sintered (at 1450 °C for 2h) pellets were carried out in the temperature range of 30 °C–350 °C using impedance spectroscopy. Based on the real and imaginary part of the dielectric constant, i) the dipolar contribution which is dominant in 30 °C–150 °C is characterized by Curie-Weiss law and ii) contribution from defects and oxygen vacancies seen beyond 150 °C is described by Arrhenius equation.

Abstract:Multiferroic nanoparticles of manganese doped bismuth ferrite with the chemical formula, Bi1-xMnxFeO3, with x values of 0, 0.025, 0.05, 0.075 and 0.1, were synthesized by sol–gel autocombustion method. X-ray diffraction measurements and Rietveld structural refinements were performed on the samples to ensure the formation of rhombohedrally distorted perovskite phase for all the samples. Dielectric measurements of the samples have been carried out in a wide range of frequencies from 1 to 40 MHz and at different temperatures in the range from 30° to 450 °C. Temperature-dependent dielectric anomalies were observed and the same were attributed to structural inhomogeneities at around 150°–270 °C, and to typical free charge carrier hopping mechanisms and anomalies at around 270°–420 °C. Impedance analysis of the samples provides indirect support for the reasons discussed in the dielectric properties and the corresponding electrical conductivity behaviour in these samples. Magnetic measurements were carried out to understand the influence of Mn ions on the magnetic behaviour of the studied multiferroics. The results of all these measurements are well discussed, and they indicate a considerable enhancement in the magnetic order with Mn doping and also a decrease in the dielectric loss with an evidence magnetoelectric coupling and thus making them useful for device applications.
Effect of Eu and Mn co-doping on temperature dependent dielectric relaxation behaviour and electric conduction mechanisms of bismuth ferrite

Abstract:The temperature dependent microscopic conduction processes and dielectric relaxations in Eu and Mn co-doped multiferroic bismuth ferrite have been examined using complex frequency-dependent ac conductivity, electric modulus and complex impedance examinations. The modified Debye's function was used to explore the dispersion behaviour of the dielectric constant. The correlated barrier hopping concept is supported by the frequency variation in ac conductivity at various temperatures, which follows Jonscher's power law. It was observed that when the co-doping concentration is low, the thermally assisted correlated barrier hopping (CBH) conduction model is better suited for the present samples whereas the overlapping large polaron tunnelling (OLPT) conduction model is better suited for higher co-doping concentrations. By looking at scaling curves for imaginary impedance (Z'') and modulus (M''), thermally induced relaxation processes have been demonstrated. It can be shown from a comparison of the Z'' and M'' spectra that charge carrier motion, particularly the dominance of short-range charge carriers which is effective at low temperatures while long-range charge carriers which is effective at high temperatures, leads to dielectric relaxation. By looking at semi-circular arcs on the Nyquist plot, it can be shown that at high temperature the electrical conduction process for the nanocrystalline sample is influenced by both grain and grain boundaries contributions. According to the study of ac conductivity under different temperatures, all compounds transport electricity with the help of electronic hopping, oxygen vacancy movement, or/and the production of the defects.

Abstract:Structural and Dielectric characterization of lead free (Y 0.5 Li 0.5 ) 0.1 Ba 0.7 Sr 0.2 TiO 3 electro-ceramic is reported in this communication. The solid solution was synthesized using carbonates and oxides via a solid-state mixed oxide technique. Calcination was carried out at 1400 °C for 12 h and XRD measurement was carried out to confirm the crystal phase. Lattice parameter were calculated from the refined X-ray diffraction data and the crystallite size was calculated following Debye Scherrer's equation, Williamson Hall and Haldar Wagner Method. Calcined powder was pelletized and sintered at 1400 °C for 2 h for further dielectric measurements. Dielectric characterization was carried out on the sintered sample from room temperature to 350 °C to investigate the ferroelectric to paraelectric phase transition characteristics. Activation energy (E a ) and ionic conductivity (σ̥) of the Y and Li co-modified Barium Strontium Titanate at discrete frequencies are discussed.
Phase formation, microstructural and dielectric properties of bismuth ferrite nanoceramics synthesized by low-temperature molten salt flux route

Abstract:BiFeO 3 nano-ceramics were synthesized using the low-temperature molten salt synthesis route to study the influence of calcination temperature and salt ratios. The Rietveld refinement revealed the distorted perovskite structure of BFO. These granular-shaped BFO samples' grains morphology was studied using the FESEM. The FTIR revealed the presence of Metal-Oxygen bonds in the BFO ceramics. The XPS studies exhibited the respective constituent elements' oxidation states and validated the presence of oxygen ion vacancies. The frequency-dependent dielectric properties were measured at various temperatures. The electrical conductivity measurement showed a linear variation as a function of frequency which validated Jonscher's power law.

Abstract:Multiferroic bismuth ferrites (BFO) and Ni substituted bismuth ferrites (BFNO) were synthesized by standard solid state reaction route. The structural and microstructural studies were carried out. The effect of Ni substitution on dielectric constant and dielectric loss of the samples was studied in a wide range of frequency (100 Hz- 1 MHz) and temperature (27 o C – 420 o C). It has been observed that the dielectric constant increases with increase in Ni doping concentration and attained a maximum value for BFNO(x = 0.075) sample while the dielectric loss has been found to decrease with the doping concentration. This implies a reduction in the conductivity and hence improved the dielectric properties of Ni doped BFO. The anomalous peaks in temperature dependent dielectric studies indicate the increase in antiferromagnetic ordering temperature and possible existence of spin glass states upon Ni substitution in place of Fe. The complex impedance spectroscopic analysis suggests purely the intrinsic nature of the dielectric anomalies. Temperature dependent non-Debye type of dielectric relaxation has also been observed. The Nyquist plots show the negative temperature coefficient of resistance behavior of these compounds. Further it would be interesting to study their magnetic and magnetoelectric properties with the aim of identifying new multifunctional device applications. Copyright © 2014 VBRI press.

Abstract:BiFeO3 (BFO), Mn (7.5%)-doped BFO (BFMO), Ni (7.5%)-doped BFO (BFNO), as well as Mn (3.75%) and Ni (3.75%) co-doped BFO (BFMNO) films were deposited on indium tin oxide (ITO)/glass substrates by sol–gel process. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis indicated that the BFO and BFNO presented single rhombohedral structure, while BFMO and BFMNO thin films presented tetragonal structure. The current density versus electric field (J–E) characteristics indicated that leakage conduction can be decreased with Mn and/or Ni doped. The films conduction mechanism of BFO and BFNO are space-charge-limited current in the high electric field region, while for BFMO and BFMNO is Ohmic’s conduction in all electric field region. The optical band gap of the BFO, BFMO, BFNO and BFMNO thin films are 2.18, 2.22, 2.3 and 2.32 eV, respectively. The inhomogeneous spin-modulated magnetic structure of BiFeO3 was modified by Mn and/or Ni substitution.
