Abstract:The recycling potential of water treatment plant (WTP) sludge in asphalt concrete mixes as filler material was assessed in this study. Marshall properties of hot bituminous mix specimens, having varying proportions (0–10%) of WTP sludge as mineral filler, were investigated, and optimum bitumen content (OBC) was obtained for each filler proportion. WTP sludge fillers were found to affect Marshall properties slightly differently than typical stone dust fillers used in pavement construction. OBC was estimated to be 5.22, 5.09, 5.34, 5.59, 5.89, and 6.4% when filler content proportions were 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10%, respectively. The volumetric design properties of hot bituminous mixtures were acceptable at OBC and met the Marshall mix design requirements of AASTHO. The WTP sludge filler significantly enhanced the Voids in Mineral Aggregate of the hot bituminous mix, which is favorable for pavement construction. The optimum WTP sludge filler proportion was found to be 4.5% if desirable properties of asphalt pavements are to be achieved. At the optimum filler level, WTP sludge mixtures required slightly higher bitumen compared to mixes with the conventional fillers. WTP sludge filler shows more susceptibility to water action than conventional filler materials. The leaching concentration for targeted heavy metals was marginal for all samples relative to the USEPA regulatory limits and is not likely to pose any significant environmental hazard. WTP sludge might be productively recycled in asphalt pavement as filler, reducing the burden of solid-waste management.
