Abstract:This study aims to sustainably utilize several widely produced fine-grained industrial wastes along with reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) in warm mix asphalt (WMA) production. The fine industrial wastes, namely Ground granulated blast furnace Slag (GS), dried Limestone Sludge (LS), and Fly Ash (FA) were utilized as fillers in variable quantities (2–6% by weight of aggregates), while conventional aggregates were also replaced with RAP to form recycled WMA. The extensive testing reflected the satisfactory engineering performance and the superior environmental suitability of recycled WMA. The mixes comprised of LS and GS exhibited superior performance against primary pavement distresses like rutting and cracking, predominately due to their high porosity, specific surface area, fine particle size, and predominance of calcareous minerals. Furthermore, the design of a single km of two-lane asphalt pavement utilizing optimally produced mixes mentioned above following the mechanistic–empirical guideline was also done, which revealed to conserve of up to 52 tonnes of conventional filler material, 36% cost savings, and curtailment of 35% of greenhouse gases emissions. The outcomes of the study are expected to not only resolve the critical issues concerning the scarcity of natural aggregates, eco-friendly as well as cost-effective waste disposal, and curtailment of greenhouse gas emissions in pavement construction practices but also improve the engineering performance of the mix described above against moisture damage, temperature, and ageing susceptibility.
