Abstract:In this work, ceramic particles were wrapped with PVA and then combined with polypropylene (PP) or polycarbonate (PC) to fast-track the preparation of PVA-based composites with water-degradation characteristics at low firing temperature of 225 °C. Simultaneously, the physical properties (e.g. flexural strengths, dielectric properties, and thermal conductivities) of the PVA-based composites were investigated in relation to the physical characteristics of fillers and their content in the composite. The results indicate that the ceramic fillers with varying particle sizes, such as AlN and SiO 2 , enhances the thermal conductivity of PVA-based composites by forming effective heat-conduction pathways. Moreover, low ε ceramic filler (SiO 2 ) up to 30% can improve the dielectric properties of the composites. By filling the pores created by the ceramic fillers, around 10% of polymer fillers (PP, PC) with good interface compatibility can strengthen the interfacial bonding with the PVA matrix, thus improving the physical properties of the PVA-based composites. Particularly, based on the formation of a porous PP-layer structure caused by slight over-firing, the degradability of the PVA-based composites can be controlled, since the porous layer slows down the contact of water and PVA. Finally, the PVA-based composite materials with excellent properties and water-degradation characteristics have been obtained. The PVA-based composites exhibit flexural strengths ranging from 60 to 180 MPa, dielectric loss of about 10 –2 , dielectric constant of 1.5 to 4, and thermal conductivity of 0.09 to 0.6. Therefore, PVA-based composites fulfill the basic physical property requirements of electronic packaging materials. Due to the increasing severity of environmental problems caused by e-waste, the development of green and degradable PVA-based composites is expected to alleviate the issue.
