Abstract:As a class of macrocyclic host with excellent water solubility, low biotoxicity and high charge density, multi-charged cyclodextrins have been extensively studied because they can interact with organic/inorganic/biological molecules through multiple synergistic forces such as the hydrophobic cavities and electrostatic interactions to construct the smart supramolecular assemblies with stable topology, functional diversity and stimulus responsiveness. The latest research progress of pH-, photo-, enzyme-, redox-, magnetic- and multi-stimulus responsive smart supramolecular assemblies, which are constructed by typical positively/negatively charged and amphiphilic multi-charged cyclodextrins including their application in the fields of drug delivery, controlled release and sensory detection is introduced, and the challenges and future developments of multi-charged cyclodextrin smart supramolecular assemblies are discussed.

Abstract:The supramolecular material has been widely used as a type of drug/gene delivery, molecule device, molecule sensor and catalysis. Due to their excellent biologic and optical properties, cyclodextrins have recently attracted increasingly more attention. In this review the newest development of the supramolecular self-assembly based on cyclodextrin is summarized. The article provided detail information about the synthesis and applications of both of rotaxanes formed by cyclodextrin ring and polymer axes, and supramolecular polymer without polymer backbone.

Abstract:Cyclodextrins (CDs) are widely used macrocycles in supramolecular assembly due to their easy availability, versatile functionality and excellent biocompatibility. Although they are well-known for forming host-guest complexes with a wide range of guests and this host-guest chemistry has long been utilized in industry and academia, new opportunities have arisen in recent years, particularly in supramolecular assembly. In the present review, we will first provide a basic introduction to CDs and then summarize their emerging roles in the fields of supramolecular chemistry and materials. This includes their involvement in hybrid frameworks with inorganic components such as metal ions and polyoxometalates, crystalline self-assembly with amphiphilic molecules, and their new possibility of "catassembly" and induced chiral supramolecular structures that have previously been overlooked. Finally, we will comment on the future perspectives of CDs to inspire more ideas and efforts, with the aim of promoting diverse applications of CDs in supramolecular materials.

Abstract:Research into macromolecular self-assembly has been progressively developing since the 1970s but with a little affect from the achievements of supramolecular chemistry. In recent years, this situation has changed as more and more factors and concepts in supramolecular chemistry have been introduced into studies of the self-assembly of polymers. In this respect, inclusion complexation based on cyclodextrins plays a remarkable role. In this tutorial review, we address how inclusion complexation has been employed and used to promote the recent developments in macromolecular self-assembly. These include the amphiphilicity adjustment of macromolecules, non-covalent linkages for forming pseudo block copolymers and micelles, surface modification and functionalization of polymeric micelles and vesicles, and the combination of synthetic polymeric assemblies with biological moieties. Furthermore, the realization of the reversible stimuli-responsiveness of polymeric assemblies and materials, particularly hydrogels by means of controllable inclusion complexation is discussed as well.

Abstract:The recent progress in "supramolecular cyclodextrin amphiphile" is reviewed in this manuscript. The supramolecular cyclodextrin amphiphiles have three main types: the first class containing the cyclodextrins with hydrophobic modifications, the second class containing the inclusion complexes between cyclodextrins and amphiphiles, and the third class containing inclusion complexes between cyclodextrins and hydrophobic guests. The investigations on supramolecular cyclodextrin amphiphiles and their self-assemblies not only expand the concept of supramolecular chemistry" introduced by Lehn, the Nobel Prize winner in chemistry in 1987, but also have the potential applications to bio-mimicry,, smart materials and controllable therapeutic drug delivery and release systems.

Abstract:The employment of cyclodextrin host-guest complexation to construct supramolecular assemblies with an emphasis on polymer networks is reviewed. The main driving force for this supramolecular assembly is host-guest complexation between cyclodextrin hosts and guest groups either of which may be discrete molecular species or substituents on a polymer backbone. The effects of such complexation on properties at the molecular and macroscopic levels are discussed. It is shown that cyclodextrin complexation may be used to design functional polymer materials with tailorable properties, especially for photo-, pH-, thermo- and redox-responsiveness and self-healing.

Abstract:Cyclodextrins (CDs), which are a class of cyclic oligosaccharides extracted from the enzymatic degradation of starch, are often utilized in molecular recognition and assembly constructs, primarily via host-guest interactions in water. In this review, recent progress in CD-based supramolecular nanoassemblies that are sensitive to chemical, biological, and physical stimuli is updated and reviewed, and intriguing examples of the biological functions of these nanoassemblies are presented, including pH- and redox-responsive drug and gene delivery, enzyme-activated specific cargo release, photoswitchable morphological interconversion, microtubular aggregation, and cell-cell communication, as well as a geomagnetism-controlled nanosystem for the suppression of tumor invasion and metastasis. Moreover, future perspectives and challenges in the fabrication of intelligent CD-based biofunctional materials are also discussed at the end of this review, which is expected to promote the translational development of these nanomaterials in the biomedical field.

Abstract:The excellent biocompatibility and unique inclusion capability as well as powerful functionalization capacity of cyclodextrins and their derivatives make them especially attractive for engineering novel functional materials for biomedical applications. There has been increasing interest recently to fabricate supramolecular systems for drug and gene delivery based on cyclodextrin materials. This review focuses on state of the art and recent advances in the construction of cyclodextrin-based assemblies and their applications for controlled drug delivery. First, we introduce cyclodextrin materials utilized for self-assembly. The fabrication technologies of supramolecular systems including nanoplatforms and hydrogels as well as their applications in nanomedicine and pharmaceutical sciences are then highlighted. At the end, the future directions of this field are discussed.

Abstract:Synthetic macrocycles have served as principal tools for supramolecular chemistry, have greatly extended the scope of organic charge transfer (CT) complexes, and have proved to be of great practical value in the solid state during the past few years. In this Minireview, we summarize the research progress on the macrocycle-based crystalline supramolecular assemblies primarily driven by intermolecular CT interactions (a.k.a. macrocycle-based crystalline CT assemblies, MCCAs for short), which are classified by their donor-acceptor (D-A) constituent elements, including simplex macrocyclic hosts, heterogeneous macrocyclic hosts, and host-guest D-A pairs. Particular attention will be focused on their diverse functions and applications, as well as the underlying CT mechanisms from the perspective of crystal engineering. Finally, the remaining challenges and prospects are outlined.

Abstract:In this study, we present a comprehensive overview of supramolecular self-assemblies comprising cyclodextrins (CDs) and polyoxometalates (POMs). We summarize the recent advancements in supramolecular POM–CD systems, including their structures, functions, and applications. Subsequently, we focus on the self-assembly behavior of CDs and POMs, encompassing the formation of inclusion complexes, host–guest interactions, and the development of hybrid materials. In addition, we discuss the remarks on future outlooks and hope that this review will serve as a valuable reference for researchers engaged in the fields of supramolecular/POM chemistry, materials science, and nanotechnology.

Abstract:A series of macrocycles, including crown ethers, cyclodextrins, calixarenes, pillararenes and cucurbiturils, are well known to be able to associate various organic/inorganic/biological guest molecules and ions in their well-defined cyclic cavities to form stable host-guest complexes and supramolecular systems through the cooperative contributions of various non-covalent interactions. When one or more functional groups are attached to the cavity of macrocycles or guest molecules, enhanced and/or controlled host-guest associations may take place, leading to not only improved host-guest binding abilities but also fascinating properties. In this review, some representative contributions in the construction of controllable macrocyclic supramolecular assemblies in aqueous solution are presented with an emphasis on the stimuli-responsive control manner and wide applications of this property.

Abstract:Supramolecular self-assembly provides a new strategy for the development of drug delivery systems from molecular components. With non-covalent interactions as driving forces, supramolecular drug delivery systems (SDDSs) can realize precise component control at the molecular level, increased predictability of the self-assembled structures, tunable control of morphologies and sizes, controlled release of delivered drugs. In this review, we first concisely introduce the background for the design of SDDSs and then describe important advances in SDDS development that involves the applications of cyclodextrin, calixarene, pillararene and cucurbituril based on host-guest interactions. Following these popular design principles, we further present the applications of water-soluble supramolecular organic frameworks as SDDSs. Finally , the challenges that need to be addressed for the practical translation of SDDSs are discussed.

Abstract:Recent progresses in molecular self-assembly based on the inclusion complexation between cyclodextrins and various guest macromolecules have been reviewed, which include ( I) polyrotaxanes molecular necklace), polypseudorotaxanes, his ( polypseudorotaxane) s or bis ( polyrotaxane) s, molecular tubes or his molecular tube) s and supramolecular hydrogels induced by the complexation between cyclodextrins or their dimers and the polymer guests including linear, comb, multi-arms star or hyperbranched ones; (2) linear or hyperbranched supramolecular polymers prepared by the self-assembly of bridged cyclodextrins and their bridged guest molecules; (3) intelligent systems showing stimuli responsive properties including temperature, pH, light or guest molecules; (4) polymeric micelles and hollow spheres made in water by the inclusion between a linear hydrophilic polymer containing cyclodextrin as side groups and a linear hydrophobic polymer with adamantine appendants. In addition, the potential applications of the resultant assemblies are discussed.

Abstract:Ionizable cyclodextrins have attracted increasing attention in host–guest chemistry and pharmaceutical industry, mainly due to the introduction of favorable electrostatic interactions. The ionizable cyclodextrins could not only enhance its own solubility but also induce oppositely charged guests to form more stable complex. However, the aggregation induced by charged cyclodextrins has rarely been reported. In this work, guided by the concept of molecular-induced aggregation, a series of carboxyl modified cyclodextrins were synthesized via “click” and hydrolysis reaction. Then, UV-vis spectrum was used to investigate the aggregating behaviors induced by these cyclodextrins towards the cationic guest molecules. The results showed that only the hepta-carboxyl-β-cyclodextrin could induce the guest molecules to self-assemble into supramolecular spherical nanoparticles. Meanwhile, it could form stable inclusion complex with amantadine, a drug for anti-Parkinson and antiviral. The assembly behaviors were investigated by dynamic light scattering, scanning electron microscope, atomic force microscope, transmission electron microscope and NMR spectroscopy. The supramolecular nanoparticles induced by hepta-carboxyl-β-CD and its inclusion with amantadine could be used to encapsulate the model drug and achieve its controlled releasing behaviors.

Abstract:Cyclodextrins, composed by D-glucose units linked by alpha-1,4-glucose bonds, have excellent molecule recognition ability for their particular structures. Graphene is a class of materials with good electrochemistry properties composed by one-atom-thick planar sheets of sp-bonded carbon atoms. As a famous "rising star", graphene is the hot topics in recent five years. Among the various graphene materials, cyclodextrin-graphene supramolecular systems can combine their advantages and also introduce novel properties. This paper reviews the recent research condition of the cyclodextrin-graphene supramolecular systems: the system is classified into covalently-bonded and non-covalently-bonded systems for the interaction modes; The applications in drug carrying & release and electrochemistry detection (including drug molecules, pollutant and biomolecules) are reviewed; The prospects in the area of drug loading and release, mimic of bio-nitrogen-fixation-process, fuel cell and electron conducting study are raised.

Abstract:Cyclodextrin, as a good water-soluble and biocompatible macrocycle, has attracted much attention due to its specific bonding with inorganic/organic/biological substrates. While combining the advantages of solid's elasticity and liquid's mobility, the gels are widely applied in many fields. The supramolecular gels based on cyclodextrin stand out in the field of soft materials due to the integration of the advantages of cyclodextrin and gel, Therefore, this review embarking upon the construction of cyclodextrin gels, discusses the driving force of their formation such as hydrogen bonding, host-guest bonding and ion interaction. Then the latest research on the functions of supramolecular cyclodextrin gels including biological/sensing/adsorption/smart materials including sliding materials are reviewed, which provide an outlook for the construction and functions of new cyclodextrin gels. Finally, the development and application of cyclodextrin gel materials are discussed and prospected.
