Abstract:Purpose: The purpose of this research is to explore the impacts of work-life balance on the performance of employees in the Nigerian health and safety industry using interviews and quantitative based online questionnaire involving one hundred participants from ten different companies. Methodology: Eighty three fully completed and returned questionnaires were utilized for the purpose of the research. The questionnaire encompasses the demographic survey of participants, well-being, job satisfaction and job performance-oriented questions. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used in developing a linear statistical relationship between employee performance and productivity as the dependent variable and employment factors - extent of work-life balance and impact of work-life balance as the independent variables respectively. Findings: 2.6295, 3.1325 and 2.8554 mean values were recorded for data generated from Work-Life Balance; Company Policies and Performance and Company Support Policy on Work-Life Balance respectively. Based on the mean values obtained, normality of the variables under study is statistically attainable. Findings from the study depict positive relationship for the variables under study. It also implies less stress in the work environments under study. Similarly, findings in terms of work environment, team support, area of specialization, workload, flexibility, supervisors’ commitment to employee’s personal lives, work force and discipline have indicated that the teaming population of health and safety employees have, to a reasonable degree, a control over their time and personal lives. Additionally, the company’s support and policies for work-life balance are said to be reasonable enough as they pave ways for sound employees’ performance. Unique contribution to theory, practice and policy: companies should improve on support and policies/programs that have direct impact on work-life balance - telecommuting, compression of work week; strict adherence to the work hours stipulated by law and any extra hour(s) spent by an employee should be adequately compensated; develop and implement a business continuity plan and carry out manpower audits to determine areas of under manning with a view of providing the qualified manpower to man the company operations. These will pave ways for the employees to develop themselves educationally, create time for families and friends, thereby, aiding the concept of meaningful work-life balance.

Abstract:Work-life balance has gained increasing popularity among scholars and practitioners since the beginning of the century. Despite significant attempts to consolidate this burgeoning field, the scholarly knowledge on work-life balance research remains fragmented and detached due to extant number of publications in the area and the mostly subjective approaches used to encapsulate the literature. As such, the current study presents an objective overview of work-life balance research between 2000 and 2020. Using bibliometric techniques, the authors examined 1190 articles indexed in Scopus database to identify the conceptual structure and current dynamics in the field. During the critical period between the reconceptualization of word-life balance and the emergence of COVID-19 pandemic, the findings reveal that the field was growing exponentially as a multidisciplinary research area. Most of the scholarly work originated in the US, UK, and Australia with a "locally-centralized-globally-discrete" collaboration pattern among scholars. The most relevant and developed research themes included, in addition to work-life balance, topics related to gender and family life. Furthermore, new emerging research directions had evolved beyond the traditional constructs including job security, flexible working hours, individual productivity, and work-life conflicts. The study contributes to the current knowledge on work-life balance by providing critical insights into the evolution of the field and offers potential avenues for scholars who are interested in this critical research domain and the changes it has experienced post pandemic.

Abstract:This paper is a review of literature on work life balance and employee performance in Nigeria as an attempt at knowledge building. This is a secondary research which sought to review literature in assessing work life balance in Nigeria and suggest suitable solutions for overcoming the problem of work life imbalance and its associatednegative spill over in order to enhance employee performance for optimum organizational output. We posit that employees who have balanced work and non-work roles are more likely to perform better, thusit is essential for employers to promote policies and structures that enhance work life balance of employees in their organisations.We conclude that there are systemic barriers that hinder the implementation of work life balance policies in Nigeria, such as leadership failure which has birthed political, economic and social challenges that are the primary sources of work life conflict, they include corruption, weak institutions that lack the capacity to monitor and enforce employment standards, high unemployment ratios, poverty, inflation and a plethora of others. We recommend that organisations provide flexible work arrangements to be enforced by government legislations that will statutorily empower employees to request for atypical work patterns, that the awareness of organisations be raised to the advantages of protecting workers’ rights to various leave initiatives that will improve employee wellbeing and managerial training to ensure managerial support for the demands of these policies.
Work Life Balance and Service Delivery Among Women Entrepreneurs in South-Western Nigeria

Abstract:Abstract Businesses in the twenty first century are characterized by persistent changes, uncertainties and undue pressure to meet demands and increase productivity. For women entrepreneurs, they are expected to combine this with the statutory responsibility of taking care of their children, families and home front. Managing these different roles and responsibilities usually influences the business performance and family life and may impact their service delivery. Hence, the study examined the impact of work-life balance on service delivery among women entrepreneurs in south-western Nigeria. A total of 379 respondents were selected from a population of 25,122 members of the Nigeria union of tailors in Lagos, Oyo and Osun state using multistage sampling techniques. Primary data was collected through the use of a structured self-administered questionnaire and a structural equation model (SEM- PLS) was adopted for the analysis. The result shows work demands, wellbeing, family workload and spousal support with coefficients 0.219, 0.101, 0.061 and 0.563. The study also found that every unit change of work-life balance would lead to a 0.792 unit change in service delivery. Therefore, the study concludes that work-life balance contributes significantly to the service delivery of women entrepreneurs. The study recommends that women entrepreneurs should effectively manage their work and family roles, ensure creativity and flexibility in their work domains and seek support to enable them to deliver efficient service and achieve overall performance in their business.

Abstract:Purpose This study aims to systematically review the existing literature and develop an understanding of work-life balance (WLB) and its relationship with other forms of work-related behavior and unearth research gaps to recommend future research possibilities and priorities. Design/methodology/approach The current study attempts to make a detailed survey of the research work done by the pioneers in the domain WLB and its related aspects. A total of 99 research work has been included in this systematic review. The research works have been classified based on the year of publication, geographical distribution, the methodology used and the sector. The various concepts and components that have made significant contributions, factors that influence WLB, importance and implications are discussed. Findings The paper points to the research gaps and scope for future research in the area of WLB. Originality/value The current study uncovered the research gaps regarding the systematic review and classifications based on demography, year of publication, the research method used and sector being studied.

Abstract:The research on work-life balance (WLB) published in journals with a Scopus index between 2011 and 2022 is carefully examined in this work. Our research attempts to clarify the evolution and trends in WLB research and the importance of publications that Scopus indexes. After analyzing 2717 research articles, we found that WLB publications have a significant annual growth rate of 14.71 %, which suggests that the trend continues to grow. Significant changes are seen, with 1888 papers produced between 2017 and 2022 highlighting a notable increase in interest in the field. With 1608 papers, social sciences account for the majority of WLB research. With 54 publications, Griffith University (Australia) is the most affiliated institution. With 30 papers, the "Economic and Social Research Council of the United Kingdom" became the primary source of financing. The most prolific author, with nine publications, is Lingard H. At the same time, co-citation analysis reveals 168 co-cited authors. The United States (USA), the United Kingdom (U.K.), and Australia (A.U.) are the top three producing nations. A thematic analysis reveals ten major WLB themes, from work stress to difficulties with human resource management. This study provides crucial insights for policymakers and leaders to address work-life balance issues effectively. Using tools like Gephi or CiteSpace, we could deepen our understanding through advanced analysis methods such as page rank and network visualization.

Abstract:AIM: With most studies on work-life balance focused on employees, this study sets out to explore the everyday living of business women who trade on petty goods and earn very little in a low-to-middle income country (LMIC). We explore their conceptions of balance, how they manage intersecting roles, and how they cope with daily hassles and stress to maintain wellbeing.BACKGROUND: With the proportion of self-employed to employed people in Sub-Saharan LMICs being an inverse of the situation in Euro-American countries, there is a need to explore what balance could mean for the people in LMICs. Most studies in the work-life literature have explored how employees pursue balance and the various strategies that work for a specific group of people. Perhaps because work-life balance literature has largely sprung from advanced economies, little focus has been placed on how other societies, especially people in LMICs, navigate balance, given their unique milieu.DESIGN: Adopting the reflective life-world approach, we inquire into the daily lives of women in very small businesses.METHOD: Twenty women who trade on a range of items and earn very little (gross daily sales of $0.41 to $62.98) were interviewed using a semi-structured guideline. Analysis was conducted using interpretative phenomenology.RESULT: Conceptions of balance for the women incorporated the notions of satisfactory progress across roles, proper time apportionment to roles, conditional balance as well as harmony and/or synchrony across roles-a slight difference from the popular understandings. Their conception of business life roles was deemed much more integral. Negative physical and psychological experiences impacting health and wellbeing, identified as culminating as a result of both roles, were commonplace but were typically considered a normal part of living. Engagements in extra-social roles appeared to have a double-edged effect. Placing the family first, time management, and prioritizing were some of the important measures of ensuring balance and wellbeing. Financial gains and personal satisfaction were top motivational reasons that kept the women committed to pursuing simultaneous roles.CONCLUSION: There is a strong overlap between what balance means for petty trading women and employees. However, the unique social platform offers a more communal perspective of issues in pursuing balance.

Abstract:Organisations face the challenge of establishing ways to mitigate the negative effects of work during coronavirus or Covid-19 pandemic. As a result work-family balance was disrupted and negatively affected the employees’ well-being especially working women. Against this backdrop, this study examined work-family balance of women working from home during covid-19 pandemic. Cross sectional research design was employed and data were collected via a survey of 126 from medical, education, banking, and finance and service sectors in Nigeria. The 126 women were selected using simple random sampling technique and data collected was analysed using simple percentage. The study revealed that women were satisfied by working remotely during the Covid-19 pandemic. The study recommends among others that organisations and government should develop and implement work-family balance policies that would promote the increasing use of remote working arrangement with special reference to working women.

Abstract:Abstract Work and family are important domains of life to many individuals with each attracting different roles and expectations. Employees who are able to balance work and family responsibilities have been reported to engage more with their work. However, negative work outcomes may result from conflicts among roles. Therefore, this paper investigated the influence of self-efficacy, gender, job status and length of service on work-life balance among employees in selected manufacturing companies in Nigeria. Participants consisted of 464 (female = 25.9%) employees that were randomly selected from manufacturing companies in Lagos state, Nigeria. Participants completed the Work-Family Balance Questionnaire and Self-Efficacy Scale. Results of the Two-Way ANOVA analyses revealed a between subject significant main effect of job status, [F(2,455) = 14.35, p<.05, ƞp2 = .059] and self-efficacy, [F(2, 455) = 7.501, p<.05, ƞp2 = .032] on work-family balance. It further showed a between subject significant main effect of gender, [F(1,458) = 14.68, p<.05, ƞp2 = .031] and a significant main effect of length of service, [F(2, 458) = 4.83, p<.05, ƞp2 = .021] on work-family balance. The study concluded that self-efficacy, job status, length of service and gender influenced the capacity to balance work and family roles among employees of manufacturing companies in Nigeria and thus recommended that management should enable employees to utilize their initiative to an acceptable level to enhance their self-efficacy.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this study is to review the work–life balance (WLB) among academics. Academics are the pillars of higher education institutions' (HEIs) mission to provide quality education to students and the community, supporting socioeconomic development. Most academics today are overworked and overburdened with duties, forcing them to work longer hours on weekends and at odd hours. This eventually affects their work–life balance and causes boundary conflicts between work and personal life. Design/methodology/approach This study proposes a bibliometric analysis to investigate the underlying knowledge structure of this phenomenon by uncovering the past and present themes and predicting future trends of WLB in academia. This review adopts two analyses (bibliographic coupling and co-word analysis), presenting the knowledge structure network. A total of 307 journal publications were retrieved from the Web of Science (WoS) database, revealing significant clusters and themes. Findings Findings identified central themes, including the issue of women in academia, predictors and the impact of WLB in academia. Research limitations/implications Implications towards research and practice relevant to scholars and practitioners are discussed, particularly in balancing academics, professional work and personal life. Originality/value This study presents a state-of-the-art bibliometric analysis by uncovering the knowledge structure of academics' work–life balance in HEIs.

Abstract:The impact of digitalisation on work-life balance stemming from flexible working arrangements, which have blurred the boundaries between one’s profession and personal space, has heightened in the face of modern technological advancements. Unlike males, females are the most disadvantaged when it comes to gender norms and formulation of institutional policies as most of the existing policies have been clearly oriented on men as compared to women. The study aims to conduct a bibliometric analysis of the relationship among evidence regarding gender equality and work-life balance in the era of digitalisation. VOSviewer is used to present data obtained from the Scopus database. Articles retrieved were critically appraised and presented in the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) flowchart. The study finds that the number of publications on the topic of gender equality, work-life balance, and digitalisation has seen a steady increase (47 in 2023 from 4 in 2017). The West and Europe dominate when it comes to contributions made to publications on digitalisation, gender equality, and work-life balance, only one paper is from South Africa and there are no publications contributed from Ghana. The study further reveals that though Germany has the highest number of publications, the United Kingdom and the United States have the highest collaboration and impact (citations). This indicates the gap in literature requiring empirical research on the effect of digitalisation on gender equality and work-life balance in the Ghanaian and developing countries context.

Abstract:Increased globalisation and modernisation over the last decade have led to a greater focus on firms adopting work-life balance (WLB) policies to increase employee preservation. This research examines the relevance of work-life balance programmes and policies and their impact on organisational outcomes. Due to demographic and socioeconomic shifts, work-life balance (WLB) has become a significant issue for many businesses. This study intended to re-examine the idea of work-life balance from the perspective of employees in the banking and IT sectors. According to the results, work-life balance is influenced by an organisation's family work culture and personal characteristics such as time management and family support. There were no noticeable variations regarding work-life balance between workers with different family structures and those in the two analysed sectors. A recent poll reveals that IT, airline and banking personnel have similar perspectives on work-life balance.

Work-life balance is one of the supreme challenging issues being encountered by the women employees in the 21st century. Work- life balance means the extent to which the employee feels contented and have his or her needs fulfilled in both professional and personal faces of life. In the recent time the issue of work-life balance has gained more concern due to the reason that an individual’s work life and personal life may present contradictory demands, while demand from both the spheres are equally important. This problem is more prominent among female employees. The research is made on the current issues of work-life balance of women bank employees to find the factors influencing their work life balance. The study is based on both the public and private sector bank employees positioned as clerk, cashier and officers. Bank employees deal with a wide variety of population daily at their working schedules. The study focuses on the causes and consequences of imbalance on the basis of demographics, Rewards, Career Development factors, family and HR factors to look at the challenges associated with managing professional and personal life of women employees of the banking sector. Abstract:The changing nature of employment and work has resulted in new demands and challenges in society, such as work-life balance, that have developed in labor relations as an imperative aspect of a beneficial work environment. Scholars affirm that implementing work-life balance practices aid in achieving better organizational results and improve employee outcomes like satisfaction, commitment and reduced turnover intentions. However, some authors have argued that there are variances between the availability of work-life balance practices in corporations and employees’ perceptions of access to such practices. This study’s purpose was to explore the professionals’ perceptions of work-life balance on managing career and personal life at a telecommunications company. This study adopted a qualitative semi-structured interview method to gather data from 16 participants selected through a purposive sampling method. The results indicated that participants agreed that when they thought about work-life balance, it meant controlling their work and life aspects, like personal interests, family, social and leisure, resulting in a balance over life and work and them being happier and more productive. This study unveiled different perceptions of female information and communications technology professionals. Reflecting that, the study emphasized the advancement of work-life balance practices to encourage and modify employees’ perceptions.

Abstract:Most researchers are investigating work-life balance as a Human Resource Management tool used to attract, motivate and retain skilled employees rather than focusing on how individuals achieve work and personal life satisfaction when engaging work and family roles. This study shifts the focus from the engagement perspective that is highly beneficial for the organization to an enhancement perspective that increases the quality of personal life. This study aimed to explore and describe strategies for the work-family balance that can potentially contribute to the family wellbeing of women in the academic profession in Sri Lanka. Semi-structured interviews exploring the experiences of work-life balance were undertaken with thirty women lecturers in state universities in Sri Lanka. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings suggest the following strategies: compartmentalizing and separating roles between work and life, fostering personal relationships, building a professional support system, a better plan schedule, and organization, self–care in terms of personal, physical, and mental health, learning and research-based work environment, effective communication in both domains, and utilization of technology and focus on sacrificing personal life for success. The identified strategies, specifically for the Sri Lankan context and that it does so from the perspective of Sri Lankan women academics.
