Abstract:With the development of computing ability, the ifrst-principles calculation has become one of the most powerful tools to investigate the properties of condensed matter. Recently, the theoretical prediction and experimental confirmation promote the great development of the topological concept in condensed matter. In this paper, we review the role of the ifrst-principles calculations in the material predictions and properties studies of the topological materials. The first-principles calculations accurately predict Bi2Se3-family three-dimensional topological insulators, SnTe-family topological crystalline insulators, and the magnetically doped (Bi,Sb)2Te3 quantum anomalous hall effect materials. This method also plays important roles in investigating the defects, the stability of surface, the surface states, etc.

Abstract:The success of topological band theory and symmetry-based topological classification significantly advances our understanding of the Berry phase. Based on the critical concept of topological obstruction, efficient theoretical frameworks, including topological quantum chemistry and symmetry indicator theory, were developed, making a massive characterization of real materials possible. However, the classification of magnetic materials often involves the complexity of their unknown magnetic structures, which are often hard to know from experiments, thus, hindering the topological classification. In this paper, we design a high-throughput workflow to classify magnetic topological materials by automating the search for collinear magnetic structures and the characterization of their topological natures. We computed 1049 chosen transition-metal compounds (TMCs) without oxygen and identified 64 topological insulators and 53 semimetals, which become 73 and 26 when U correction is further considered. Due to the lack of magnetic structure information from experiments, our high-throughput predictions provide insightful reference results and make the step toward a complete diagnosis of magnetic topological materials.

Abstract:Discoveries of topological states and topological materials have reshaped our understanding of physics and materials over the past 15 years. First-principles calculations have had an important role in bridging the theory of topology and experiments by predicting realistic topological materials. In this Review, we offer an overview of the first-principles methodology on topological quantum materials. First, we unify different concepts of topological states in the same band inversion scenario. We then discuss the topology using first-principles band structures and newly established topological materials databases. We stress challenges in characterizing symmetry-independent Weyl semimetals and calculating topological surface states, closing with an outlook on the exciting transport and optical phenomena induced by the topology. First-principles calculations have been very successful in predicting topological quantum materials. This Technical Review covers topological band theory and provides a guide to the study of topological materials with first-principles methods.

Abstract:Topological electronic materials such as bismuth selenide, tantalum arsenide and sodium bismuthide show unconventional linear response in the bulk, as well as anomalous gapless states at their boundaries. They are of both fundamental and applied interest, with the potential for use in high-performance electronics and quantum computing. But their detection has so far been hindered by the difficulty of calculating topological invariant properties (or topological nodes), which requires both experience with materials and expertise with advanced theoretical tools. Here we introduce an effective, efficient and fully automated algorithm that diagnoses the nontrivial band topology in a large fraction of nonmagnetic materials. Our algorithm is based on recently developed exhaustive mappings between the symmetry representations of occupied bands and topological invariants. We sweep through a total of 39,519 materials available in a crystal database, and find that as many as 8,056 of them are topologically nontrivial. All results are available and searchable in a database with an interactive user interface.

Discovering two-dimensional magnetic topological insulators by machine learning

Abstract:Topological materials with unconventional electronic properties have been investigated intensively for both fundamental and practical interests. Thousands of topological materials have been identified by symmetry-based analysis and ab initio calculations. However, the predicted magnetic topological insulators with genuine full band gaps are rare. Here we employ this database and supervisedly train neural networks to develop a heuristic chemical rule for electronic topology diagnosis. The learned rule is interpretable and diagnoses with a high accuracy whether a material is topological using only its chemical formula and Hubbard $U$ parameter. We next evaluate the model performance in several different regimes of materials. Finally, we integrate machine-learned rule with ab initio calculations to high-throughput screen for magnetic topological insulators in 2D material database. We discover 6 new classes (15 materials) of Chern insulators, among which 4 classes (7 materials) have full band gaps and may motivate for experimental observation. We anticipate the machine-learned rule here can be used as a guiding principle for inverse design and discovery of new topological materials.

First-principles prediction of a new family of layered topological insulators

Abstract:Dozens of layered V$_2$IV$_2$VI$_6$ (V=P, As, Sb, Bi, IV=Si, Ge, Sn, Pb, VI=S, Se, Te) materials are investigated, several of which have been successfully synthesized in experiment. Among them, we predict nine strong topological insulators (TIs), two strong topological metals (TMs) and nearly twenty trivial insulators at their equilibrium structures. The TIs are in the (1;111) topological class, with energy gaps ranging from 0.04 to 0.2 eV. The strong TMs and the trivial insulators belong to the (1;111) and (0;000) topological classes, respectively. Small compressive strains easily turn some of the trivial insulators into strong TIs. This study enriches not only the family of topological materials but also the family of van der Waals layered materials, providing promising candidates for the future spintronic devices.

Abstract:This paper is a contribution to the joint Physical Review Applied and Physical Review Materials collection titled Two-Dimensional Materials and Devices. Borides of group-IB and group-IIB metals normally do not exist in the bulk form due to the small electronegativity difference and large mismatch in their atomic sizes. Contrary to these established rules, several metastable two-dimensional structures of copper boride were predicted from ab initio evolutionary searches, identifying that two structures are metallic whereas another one is strikingly a nodal line semimetal. The reduced dimensionality and intralayer coupling are responsible for the emergence of copper borides. This makes copper borides an attractive material for potential electronics applications.

Abstract:Recent attempts at searching for new materials have revealed a large class of materials that show topological behaviors with unusual physical properties and potential applications leading to enthralling discoveries both theoretically and experimentally. We computationally predict new three-dimensional topological compounds of space group 139(I/4mmm). After conducting a full volume optimization process by allowing the rearrangement of atomic positions and lattice parameters, the first-principles calculation with a generalized gradient approximation is utilized to identify multiple Dirac-type crossings around X and P symmetric points near Fermi energy. Importantly, the band inversion at point P is recognized. Further, we investigate the compound for topological crystalline insulating behavior by conducting surface state calculation and by investigating gapping behavior by increasing lattice parameters. Additionally, we perform formation energy, elastic properties, and phonon modes calculations to verify the structural, mechanical, and dynamical stability of the compounds. Therefore, we suggest compounds for further investigation and experimental realization.
Orbital Shift‐Induced Boundary Obstructed Topological Materials with a Large Energy Gap

Abstract:The authors put forward t he boundary obstructed topological phases caused by Wannier orbital shift between ordinary atomic sites. Moreover, a general principle to trigger the higher‐order states is proposed. Armed with this method, five material candidates are predicted for second‐order and three for third‐order topological insulators, all of which are overlooked in the present topological databases. Boundary obstructed topological phases caused by Wannier orbital shift between ordinary atomic sites are proposed, which, however, cannot be indicated by symmetry eigenvalues at high symmetry momenta (symmetry indicators) in bulk. On the open boundary, Wannier charge centers can shift to different atoms from those in bulk, leading to in‐gap surface states, higher‐order hinge states or corner states. To demonstrate such orbital shift‐induced boundary obstructed topological insulators, eight material candidates are predicted, all of which are overlooked in the present topological databases. Metallic surface states, hinge states, or corner states cover the large bulk energy gap (e.g., more than 1 eV in TlGaTe2) at related boundary, which are ready for experimental detection. Additionally, these materials are also fragile topological insulators with hourglass‐like surface states.

Abstract:Topological semimetals (TSMs) refer to electronic gapless phases that exhibit topological band crossings around the Fermi level and have intrigued enormous research interest in the past few decades. There have been many theoretical and experimental progresses regarding TSMs, and first-principles calculations have been proven to be an instrumental tool in finding candidate materials for TSMs. In this tutorial, we will focus on two representative types of TSMs—Weyl and Dirac semimetals and summarize the recent progress from the perspective of first-principles calculations. First of all, the basic concepts of TSMs, the generic topological invariants, and the frequently used techniques within first-principles calculations are briefly introduced. Second, taking typical materials as representative examples, we summarize the characteristic electronic properties, formation mechanisms, and general methodologies for Weyl and Dirac semimetals, respectively. In the last part, we present a short review of recent progresses on other types of TSMs.

Abstract:<p>Modern material science has been revolutionized by the discovery of novel topological states of quantum matter, which sheds new lights on solving long-standing scientific challenges. However, the exotic quantum phenomena are typically observable only in rare material systems under extreme experimental conditions. The search of suitable candidate materials that are able to work at ambient conditions is thus of crucial importance to both fundamental research and practical applications. Here we review our recent efforts on first-principles exploration of novel quantum physics and materials, focusing on emergent quantum phenomena induced by spin-orbit coupling and its interplay with magnetism, topology and superconductivity. The first-principles material design guided by fundamental theory enables the discoveries of several key quantum materials, including next-generation magnetic topological insulators, high-temperature quantum anomalous Hall and quantum spin Hall insulators, and unconventional superconductors. A closecollaboration with experiment not only successfully confirmed most of our theoretical predictions, but also led to surprising findings for further investigations, which greatly promotes development of the research field.</p>

Correlated Topological Insulators with Mixed Valence

Abstract:We propose the local density approximation (LDA)+Gutzwiller method incorporating Green's function scheme to study the topological physics of correlated materials from the first-principles. Applying this method to typical mixed valence materials SmB6, we found its non-trivial Z2 topology, indicating that SmB6 is a strongly correlated topological insulator (TI). The unique feature of this compound is that its surface states contain three Dirac cones in contrast to most known TIs.

High-throughput calculations of magnetic topological materials

Abstract:The discoveries of intrinsically magnetic topological materials, including semimetals with a large anomalous Hall effect and axion insulators, have directed fundamental research in solid-state materials. Topological quantum chemistry has enabled the understanding of and the search for paramagnetic topological materials. Using magnetic topological indices obtained from magnetic topological quantum chemistry (MTQC), here we perform a high-throughput search for magnetic topological materials based on first-principles calculations. We use as our starting point the Magnetic Materials Database on the Bilbao Crystallographic Server, which contains more than 549 magnetic compounds with magnetic structures deduced from neutron-scattering experiments, and identify 130 enforced semimetals (for which the band crossings are implied by symmetry eigenvalues), and topological insulators. For each compound, we perform complete electronic structure calculations, which include complete topological phase diagrams using different values of the Hubbard potential. Using a custom code to find the magnetic co-representations of all bands in all magnetic space groups, we generate data to be fed into the algorithm of MTQC to determine the topology of each magnetic material. Several of these materials display previously unknown topological phases, including symmetry-indicated magnetic semimetals, three-dimensional anomalous Hall insulators and higher-order magnetic semimetals. We analyse topological trends in the materials under varying interactions: 60 per cent of the 130 topological materials have topologies sensitive to interactions, and the others have stable topologies under varying interactions. We provide a materials database for future experimental studies and open-source code for diagnosing topologies of magnetic materials.

Abstract:One of the most remarkable characteristics of topological materials is that they have special surface states, which are determined by the topological properties of their bulk materials. Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is a powerful tool to explore surface states, which allows to further investigate the topological phase transitions. However, it is very difficult to compare the first-principles calculated band structures to the ARPES results, when the systems are doped or alloyed, because the band structures are heavily folded. We develop an efficient band unfolding method based on numerical atomic orbitals (NAOs). We apply this method to study the surface states of the non-magnetically and magnetically doped topological insulators Bi2Se3 and the topological crystalline insulators Pb1−xSnxTe.

Prediction of two-dimensional organic topological insulator in metal-DCB lattices

Abstract:Based on first-principles calculations, we systematically investigated a two-dimensional (2D) organometallic framework consisting of metal atoms (elements from groups IIIA, IVA, VA, VIA, IB, and Pt) and dicyanobenzenes (DCBs). Our stability analysis showed that the system prefers the buckled structure in metals with p-orbital valence electrons, whereas in metals with d-orbitals, the planar phase is preferable. Topological invariants (Z2) of these systems were calculated, and they are identified as 2D intrinsic organic topological insulators. Au- and Bi-DCB are exemplar materials with the largest bandgaps within IB and VA groups. Moreover, Au-DCB exhibits robustness of its topological phase against strain. Furthermore, the topologically protected edge states in Au-DCB are identified to further verify the Z2 invariant. Interestingly, utilizing hole doping in Bi-DCB leads to a nearly flat Chern band and results in the quantum anomalous Hall phase. Our results suggest that these organometallic frameworks are promising for potential applications in quantum spintronics with the merits of low cost and ease of synthesis.

Prediction of Intrinsic Two-Dimensional Non-Dirac Topological Insulators in Triangular Metal-Organic Frameworks

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with topologically nontrivial states have attracted considerable attention recently. Based on ab initio calculations, we demonstrate that Cu(C21N3H15) with a triangular lattice is an intrinsic quantum anomalous Hall insulator. The multiple p (px and py)-like molecular orbitals of the C21N3H15 molecule with C3 symmetry give rise to a degenerate energy point at the Γ point with quadratic non-Dirac band dispersions. When the spin-orbit coupling is included, the bandgap is opened around the non-Dirac Γ point and a topologically nontrivial state is achieved. Quantum spin Hall effects can also be realized in this kind of 2D triangular lattice MOF if the time-reversal symmetry is preserved, as proposed in the Ni(C21N3H15) lattice. The physical mechanism is analyzed through a k · p model built. Our results present that the 2D triangular lattice MOFs are excellent candidates for producing 2D topological insulators and might have promising applications in future microelectronics and spintronics.
Comprehensive Search for Topological Materials Using Symmetry Indicators

Abstract:Over the past decade, topological materials-in which the topology of electron bands in the bulk material leads to robust, unconventional surface states and electromagnetism-have attracted much attention. Although several theoretically proposed topological materials have been experimentally confirmed, extensive experimental exploration of topological properties, as well as applications in realistic devices, has been restricted by the lack of topological materials in which interference from trivial Fermi surface states is minimized. Here we apply our method of symmetry indicators to all suitable nonmagnetic compounds in all 230 possible space groups. A database search reveals thousands of candidate topological materials, of which we highlight 241 topological insulators and 142 topological crystalline insulators that have either noticeable full bandgaps or a considerable direct gap together with small trivial Fermi pockets. Furthermore, we list 692 topological semimetals that have band crossing points located near the Fermi level. These candidate materials open up the possibility of using topological materials in next-generation electronic devices.
Computation and data driven discovery of topological phononic materials

Abstract:The discovery of topological quantum states marks a new chapter in both condensed matter physics and materials sciences. By analogy to spin electronic system, topological concepts have been extended into phonons, boosting the birth of topological phononics (TPs). Here, we present a high-throughput screening and data-driven approach to compute and evaluate TPs among over 10,000 materials. We have clarified 5014 TP materials and classified them into single Weyl, high degenerate Weyl, and nodal-line (ring) TPs. Among them, three representative cases of TPs have been discussed in detail. Furthermore, we suggest 322 TP materials with potential clean nontrivial surface states, which are favorable for experimental characterizations. This work significantly increases the current library of TP materials, which enables an in-depth investigation of their structure-property relations and opens new avenues for future device design related to TPs.
