Abstract:The effect of hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) temperature and bamboo hydrochar (BHC) addition on biogas production in anaerobic digestion of fish processing waste (FPW) was studied. HTC temperature (200-280 °C) had significant effects on methane yield and content, but the BHC had little effects. The maximum biogas yield observed with HTC at 200 °C and a BHC adding ratio of 1:2 (dry mass ratio of FPW to BHC) reached 292 L/kg volatile solids (VS), which were 64% higher than the control group with only FPW, with the maximum methane yield of 219 L/kg-VS and highest net methane energy yield of 3410 kJ/kg-VS. The obtained results can be used to design an efficient anaerobic digestion process for treating and effectively utilizing fish processing waste.

Abstract:A 60-day feeding trial was carried out to evaluate the effects of chromium yeast (CY), tributyrin (TB) and bile acid (BA) on the snakehead (Channa argus). The control (CT) group was fed the basal diet, and the experimental groups were fed 200 mg/kg CY (concentration: 1,000 mg/kg), 2.5 g/kg TB (purity: 45%) or 1 g/kg BA (purity: 30%) in addition to the basal diet. The addition of CY, TB and BA statistically increased the weight gain rate, and specific growth rate, whereas the feeding rate and feed conversion ratio were significantly reduced (p < 0.05). When compared with the CT group, TB elevated the serum glutathion peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity; and BA reduced low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) contents significantly (p < 0.05). The three feed additives reduced intestinal malonaldehyde (MDA) levels dramatically. Tributyrin significantly enhanced intestinal trypsin and pepsin activities (p < 0.05). The activity of fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase and pyruvate carboxylase in the group fed CY was significantly lower than in the CT group. In conclusion, dietary inclusion of the three additives enhanced growth performance of C. argus. Dietary supplementation of CY affected protein, glucose and lipid metabolism. Diets with TB levels improved intestinal digestive enzyme activity and antioxidant capacity. The addition of BA improved glycolipid metabolism.

Abstract:Berberine (BBR) is an isoquinoline alkaloid with hepatoprotective, anti-obesity, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. The present study investigated berberine supplementation in high starch diet on growth performance, antioxidative status, immune parameters, and ammonia stress response of black sea bream (Acanthopagrus schlegelii). Three isonitrogenous diets were prepared as Con: control diet (14% starch), HS: high starch diet (23% starch), and HSB: high starch diet with 50 mg/kg berberine. After the 8-week feeding trial, HS and HSB groups had similar specific growth rate and weight gain, but they were significantly lower than that of the Con group (P < .05). Fish fed HS diet had excessive lipid deposition and nuclear polarization in hepatocytes, as well as higher serum activities of aspartate transaminase and alanine aminotransferase. In contrast, fish fed HSB diet showed significantly reduced serum aspartate transaminase and alanine aminotransferase activities and alleviated hepatic lipid accumulation. Significantly lower serum glucose and lactate contents were observed in the HSB group. After the ammonia stress test (0.5 mg/L unionized ammonia), serum acid phosphatase and lysozyme activities, and total antioxidant capacity decreased significantly in all groups. Additionally, the highest hepatic glutathione peroxidase activity was found in fish fed HSB diet both before and after the ammonia stress test, whereas the HS group obtained the highest malondialdehyde in liver. In conclusion, berberine supplementation in high starch diet could reduce hepatic lipid accumulation, improve liver health and antioxidative status.

Abstract:Oreochromis niloticus fingerlings (5.15 ± 0.02 g; n = 315) were fed with different types of biochar (BC)-supplemented sunflower meal-based (SFM) diet to investigate the effects of various BC inclusions on their nutritional digestibility, body composition, hematology and mineral status for 60 days. Seven different diets were formulated based on the SFM based diet: one was a control (TD-I, CON) and the other six diets were supplemented with 2% BC derived from different sources. These BCs were derived from the following: cotton stick (CSBC, TD-II), wheat straw (WSBC, TD-III), corn cob (CCBC, TD-IV), house waste (HWBC, TD-V), grass waste (GWBC, TD-VI), and green waste (GwBC, TD-VII) biochar. There were three replicates for each test diet. Each tank had fifteen tilapia fingerlings, and they were fed with 5% of their live wet weight and twice daily. The outcomes showed that the supplementation of CCBC significantly elevated the growth, nutrient absorption, and body composition of the O. niloticus fingerlings ( p < 0.05); with concomitant lowering of the quantity of nutrients released into the water bodies whereas HWBC gave negative impacts. The maximal mineral absorption efficiency (Ca, Na, K, Cu, Fe, P, and Zn) was achieved by the supplementation of 2% CCBC. All hematological parameters showed positive improvements ( p < 0.05) with CCBC. Interestingly, CCBC significantly improved the growth, digestibility, body composition, hematology, and mineral status of O. niloticus .

Abstract:This experiment examines the effects of bamboo charcoal (BC) powder, bamboo vinegar (BV), and their combination (BCV) in the diet of laying hens on performance, egg quality, relative organ weights, and intestinal bacterial populations. A total of 320 laying hens (36 weeks of age) were divided into 4 treatment groups, with 10 replicates per treatment and 8 hens per replicate. They were fed on a control diet, the control diet supplemented with 0.8% BC, the control diet supplemented with 0.4% BV, or the control diet supplemented with a combination of BC (0.8%) and BV (0.4%) from 36 to 51 weeks of age. Egg production increased in the hens fed the BV and BCV diets during 48 to 51 weeks of age (P < 0.05). Damaged egg rate decreased in the hens fed the BV and BCV diets for the whole experiment (P < 0.05). Shell thickness was highest in the BCV-fed group at week 43, and shell strength was higher in the BV-fed group at week 51 (P < 0.05). Supplementation of BC or BCV in the diet resulted in a decreased abdominal fat pad (P < 0.05). In the ileal content, the population of Salmonella spp. decreased in the BV and BCV groups and the population of Lactobacillus spp. increased in the BV group (P < 0.05). The present results indicate that feeding BV or BCV alleviates damaged egg rate and decreases intestinal pathogenic bacteria, while feeding BC benefits by reducing abdominal fat. These results suggest that the effect of BCV seems to be induced by the synergistic effect of BC and BV, and that the BCV contributes to the effective use of bamboo on the laying hen's production.

Physiological and biochemical characteristics of pig versus bamboo biochars and their effects on ammonia volatilization in greenhouse vegetable production

Abstract:To evaluate the effect of feedstock materials on characteristics of biochar products from a pig-derived biochar ( PB) and a bamboo-derived biochar (BB), biochar properties were evaluated and compared in a laboratory study. A field experiment was also carried out to evaluate the effect of PB and BB on soil ammonia volatilization in an Ipomoea aquatica -Brassica chinensis rotation system in a greenhouse at Banqiao Town, Lin'an City, Zhejiang Province, China. Treatments included (1) a control (no biochar); (2) one application of 20 t·hm-2 PB (20-0-PB) prior to the first I. aquatica crop; (3) one application of 20 t·hm-2 of BB (20-0-BB) prior to the first I. aquatica crop; (4) two applications of PB with 10 t·hm-2 being applied prior to the I. aquat-ica season and the remaining PB being applied prior to the B. chinensis season at an application rate of 10 t· hm-2 (10-10-PB); and (5) two applications of BB with 10 t·hm-2 being applied prior to the I. aquatica season and the remaining BB being applied prior to the B. chinensis season at an application rate of 10 t·hm-2 (10-10-BB). Results showed that PB had higher contents of phosphorus and ash as well as a lower content of car-bon than those of BB; whereas, BB had a higher carbon content and a lower ash content than those of PB. The ammonia volatilization rate had a highly significant correlation (P<0.01) with soil temperature, and the am-monia volatilization losses in the Ipomoea aquatica crop season were higher than in the Brassica chinensis crop season. The PB and BB treatments significantly (P<0.05) reduced ammonia volatilization losses in the I. aquatica crop season, but had no significant effect in the B. chinensis crop season. Compared with the 10-10-PB or 10-10-BB treatments, ammonia volatilization losses were significantly (P<0.05) reduced with 20-0-PB (28.7%) and 20-0-BB (13.3%) treatments in the first I. aquatica crop season, and the PB treatment was more effective than the BB treatment. No significant differences between PB and BB treatments in the second I. aquatica crop season were found. Compared with the control, the 20-0-PB treatment reduced ammonia volatilization losses 41%over the whole rotation. In conclusion, pig biochar treatments appeared to be more ef-fective than bamboo biochar treatments in reducing ammonia volatilization losses from the soil. [ Ch, 3 fig. 4 tab. 29 ref.]

Abstract:In this research, the effects of bamboo charcoal on soil contaminant accumulation, soil fertility and plant growth were investigated. The results indicated that sludge composted with bamboo charcoal (BCS) significantly increased plant growth and decreased the mobility of Zn, Cu and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), compared with the composted sludge without bamboo charcoal (CS), with lower absorption and less accumulation of contaminants by the plants. Concentrations of Cu in turfgrass treated with CS were 11.7-23.4% higher than those of turfgrass treated with BCS. Concentrations of Zn in turfgrass treated with CS were 14.2-25.9% higher than those of turfgrass treated with BCS. The concentration of sigma 16PAHs (total contents of 16 PAHs that are listed by USEPA as priority pollutants for remediation based on their persistence and carcinogenic potential) in ryegrass grown in yellow loamy soil amended with CS was 680 microg kg(-1)) and was higher than that of ryegrass treated with BCS (only 439 microg kg(-1)). The biomass of fescue in BCS-treated soils increased by 13-16% compared with that of fescue in CS-treated soil. The biomass of ryegrass in BCS-treated soil was 20-27% higher than that in CS-treated soil. Chlorophyll content in turfgrass grown in CS-treated soil was lower than that in grass grown in BCS-treated soil. Compared with the control, chlorophyll contents in plants grown in soil with CS increased by about 13-22%, whereas those in plants grown in soil with BCS increased by about 20-32%.
Effect of bamboo charcoal amendment on an AnMBR in the aspect of anaerobic habitat and membrane fouling

Abstract:The effect of bamboo charcoal (BC) amendment on the anaerobic habitat such as alkalinity and membrane fouling in an anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) was investigated in this study. Results showed that the addition of BC into an anaerobic EGSB reactor modified the effluent wastewater properties, and 0.19-0.27 g of alkalinity was produced with the consumption of 1 g of COD which favored the performance of the anaerobic system. Analyzed by energy diffusive X-ray analysis (EDX) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), the content of dissolved microbial products (SMPs) as well as that of the elements Ca, Al, Si, and Fe decreased significantly with the addition of BC. At the same time, BC inhibited the enrichment of microbes such as Bacteroidetes contributing to the formation of dense cake layers on the membrane surface. This work described an effective strategy for the treatment of high-concentration refractory organic wastewater. The addition of BC not only improved the anaerobic habitat and effluent quality, but also alleviated the issue of membrane fouling effectively, which could provide a foundation for future scale-up studies.

Abstract:Managing agro-waste effectively and sustainably is a significant challenge today. In this study, various waste-derived biochar (BC) derived from agricultural origins such as cotton, wheat, corn, grass, household and green wastes, were used as supplements in the various fish meal formulation. Cyprinus carpio fishes were fed with the different diets to investigate their effects on growth, nutrient and mineral digestibility, hematology and body composition. A basal diet of sunflower meal was fed for a period of 60 days. Seven experimental diets were prepared, consisting of a control diet and six test diets, each containing 2% of a distinct biochar sources: household waste (HW), cotton stick (CS), green waste (Gw) wheat straw (WS), corn cob (CC), and grass waste (GW). There were 15 fingerlings in each tank; with three replicas of each test diet and they were fed at 5% with respect to the body weight. The findings demonstrated that supplementing with CCBC substantially ( p < 0.05) increased the growth performance, digestibility and carcass of Common carp, C. carpio, while HWBC showed negative results. The highest efficiency in mineral absorption was observed in the test fishes when with the supplementation of 2% corn cob biochar (CCBC) in the diet. Moreover, the fish blood profiles showed significant improvements ( p < 0.05) when fed with CCBC. Conclusively, CCBC was found to be the most effective supplementation for improving growth, hematology, carcass, digestibility, and mineral status of C. carpio .

Degradation of nonylphenol in water by microorganisms immobilized on bamboo charcoal

Abstract:Bamboo charcoal is a high-quality biochar, with a large surface area, well-developed pores, and high mechanical strength. Therefore, it is one of the best choices of microbial immobilization carrier. In this study, the optimal preparation condition was examined for microorganisms immobilized on bamboo charcoal by the orthogonal test. The degradation effects of estrogen nonylphenol were compared between the bacteria immobilized on bamboo charcoal and free bacteria, and then feasibility of the reuse of immobilized bacteria was investigated. The results showed that lots of degrading bacteria could adhere to the surface and internal pores of bamboo charcoal. The optimum conditions for the preparation of immobilized microorganisms were as follows: 30 ℃, pH=7, 35-mesh bamboo charcoal. The degradation rate of nonylphenol was in good agreement with the first order kinetics equation. When the initial concentrations of nonylphenol were 30, 50, 80 and 100 mg·L, the degradation rates of nonylphenol of immobilized bacteria for seven days were 100%, 75.3%, 67.3% and 78.7%, respectively, which were significantly higher than those of free bacteria (54.2%, 51.5%, 30.6% and 23.5%). After eight rounds of reuse, the degradation rate for immobilized bacteria still reached as high as 36.5%, while it was only 8.9% for free bacteria. Our results indicated that the microorganisms immobilized on bamboo charcoal had long-term reusability, and thus had good prospects in the application of organic pollutants removal in wastewater.

Abstract:Although accumulating data demonstrate that dietary supplementation of bamboo vinegar and charcoal powder (BVC) can significantly strengthen the immunity and boost the growth of domestic animals, its application potency still awaits verification in commercial fish species such as the large-scale loach Paramisgurnus dabryanus. The impacts of 90-day dietary supplementation of 1% and 2% BVC on survival and growth performance of the loach, and on the intestinal morphological characteristics and gut microflora were analyzed. Our data show that the large-scale loach supplied with BVC at the experimental doses had significant higher survival rates and better growth performance (indicated by greater weight gain (1.13–1.14 times), higher specific growth rate (1.04 times), and lower feed conversion ratio (0.88–0.89 times)) compared to that of the control ( P <0.05). Histological examination revealed significant longer villus (3.22–5.54 times), deeper crypt (1.77–1.87 times), and thicker muscle (1.59–3.17 times) in the intestines of large-scale loach fed with BVC ( P <0.05). Furthermore, we found that the gut microflora consisted of significantly fewer proportions of potential pathogenic bacterial species ( Aeromonas veronii and Escherichia coli ), but significantly greater proportions of beneficial microbes ( Lactococus raffinolactis and Faecalibacterium prausnitzii ). Therefore, dietary intake of BVC can promote intestinal tract development and optimize gut microflora, by which the survival and growth of large-scale loach may be improved.
Dietary bamboo charcoal powder ameliorates high-fat diet-induced hyperlipidemia by enhancing fecal lipid excretions in Sprague-Dawley rats

Abstract:Introduction: Bamboo charcoal powder (BCP) is increasingly used as a food colorant. This study aims to evaluate the effects of BCP consumption on improving high-fat diet-induced hyperlipidemia. Methods: Fifty male SD rats were randomly assigned into five groups, with 10 rats in each group: the control group was fed a low-fat diet (LFD); the model control group was fed a high-fat diet (HFD); the low-BCP dose group was fed a HFD and given 2.81 g of BCP/kg of body weight (BCP-L) by gavage; the medium-BCP dose group was fed a HFD and given 5.62 g of BCP/kg of body weight (BCP-M) by gavage; the high-BCP dose group was fed a HFD and given 11.24 g of BCP/kg of body weight (BCP-H) by gavage. Results: After 90 days, the consumption of BCP caused a decrease in body weight, plasma lipids (triglyceride, cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein (LDL)), liver triglyceride, and cholesterol levels, and liver histopathological scores. BCP caused a significant increase in superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) in liver tissues. BCP also led to an increase in 72-h fecal dry weight and crude fat in a rat metabolic cage. The analysis of fecal samples with liquid chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-Q-TOF-MS) showed that the biomarkers associated with BCP consumption were mainly related to fatty and amino acid metabolism. Notably, BCP treatment significantly promoted linoleic acid metabolism. Discussion: These results suggest that BCP may have a preventive effect against diet-induced hyperlipidemia through the promotion of fecal fat excretion. BCP may potentially be used as an alternative functional food component for people with diet-induced hyperlipidemia.
Effects of Composite Bacillus sp. on Growth Performance, Cecal Microflora and Ammonia Emission from Excreta in Broilers

Abstract:A Feeding trial was conducted to study the effects of different concentrations of CompositeBacillus sp.(Clostridium butyricum and Bacillus licheniformis,CBG) on growth performance,cecal microflora,and ammonia emission from excreta in broilers,to explore its action mechanism.Six hundred one-day-old Lingnan yellow-feathered broilers were randomly assigned to 4 groups with three replicate pens of 50 broilers each.There were 4 treatments: Control group,fed basal diet supplemented with 20 mg/kg Virginiamycin and 50 mg/kg Rroxarsone;and 3 experimental groups receiving basal diet supplemented with different concentrations of Composite Bacillus sp.(100,150,200 mg/kg,respectively).The experiment lasted for 50 days.The results showed that compared to the control,no significant differences were observed for growth performance after the supplementation of 100 mg/kg and 150 mg/kg Composit e Bacillus sp.(P >0.05).Composite Bacillus sp.had a significantly increasing effect on the populations of Lactobacillus of caecum at d 50(P <0.05).At 50 d of age,the pH value of caecum was significantly decreased after supplementation of 150 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg Composite Bacillus sp.preparation(P<0.05),and the group with 150 mg/ kg CBG got the optimal effect.With the supplementation of 150 mg/kg Composite Bacillus sp.,and uric acid content of its feces and caecum in day 50 was significant decreased(P<0.05).Composite Bacillus sp.significantly decreased the pH value of manure at day 43(P <0.05),and decreased the ammonia emission from excreta effectively,especially a better result happening on 150 mg/kg Composite Bacillus sp.group.Those indicated that Composite Bacillus sp.could regulate the intestinal microflora,decrease pH and the nitrogen content of feces and caecum,thus reduce the ammonia emission from manure.Results demonstrated that 150 mg/kg Composite Bacillus sp.is the best dosage in diets of broilers.

Abstract:Bamboo charcoal,which inherited the porosity of the bamboo,has rich carbon element and strong adsorption due to its high specific surface area.It can effectively adsorb halogen,heavy metals,phenols,dye,nitrogen,phosphorus,organic pollutants and so on in water.Factors,such as bamboo charcoal particle size and amount,pollutant types and the environment,affect the adsorption of bamboo charcoal.In a certain range,the smaller the bamboo charcoal particle size,the more the dosage,the longer the contact time with water,the more appropriate the temperature and pH,the better the adsorption effect is.Combine the microorganism,which could degrade pollutants,with bamboo charcoal,we may get the bamboo charcoal immobilized microorganism.And it is particularly suitable for dealing with specified pollutants such as ammonia nitrogen,sulfide,phenols in aquaculture water,its effect is better than bamboo charcoal.Because bamboo charcoal can provide microorganisms a live place,while microorganisms can remove contaminants in bamboo charcoal.At present,the phenomenon of bamboo charcoal immobilized microorganism used in water treatment is not common.In order to offer a more efficient and convenient method of water purification,we reviewed the application of bamboo charcoal and its immobilized microorganism in water treatment.
Effects of Micronised Bamboo Powder on Growth Performance, Intestinal Development, Caecal Chyme Microflora and Metabolic Pathway of Broilers Aged 24–45 Days

Abstract:Context Our previous study revealed that micronised bamboo powder (MBP) can promote the growth performance of broilers aged 1–22 days by improving oxidation resistance, balancing intestinal microflora and regulating metabolic pathways. Aims This study evaluates the effects of MBP on growth performance, intestinal development, caecal chyme microflora and metabolic pathways of broilers during the grower period, age 24–45 days. Methods Slow-growing spotted-brown broilers (n = 880, age 24 days) were randomly divided into two groups according to weight and sex and fed either a maize-based diet (control) or a diet with MBP at 1% replacing equivalent maize. Key results No significant difference was observed in growth performance between MBP and control groups. Broilers receiving MBP exhibited significantly higher (P < 0.05) caecal organ index, jejunum villus height and villi:crypt ratio. The relative abundance of Firmicutes was higher, and relative abundance of Bacteroidetes was lower in the MBP group. Addition of MBP also significantly (P < 0.05) upregulated abundance of p_Firmicutes, f_Alicyclobacillaceae, g_Acutalibacter, f_Peptococcaceae, f_Clostridiaceae, f_Bacillaceae, g_Enterococcus and f_Enterococcaceae, while downregulating abundance of p_Bacteroidetes, f_Bacteroidaceae, g_Bacteroides, o_Bacteroidales and c_Bacteroidia. For the metabolic pathways, 66 were observed to differ between dietary groups, including alanine, aspartic acid and glutamic acid metabolism, butyric acid metabolism, arginine synthesis, linoleic acid metabolism and β-alanine metabolism. Correlation analysis revealed that Firmicutes in caecal chyme were significantly positively correlated (P < 0.05) with some fatty acids including syringic, 3-methyl-2-oxovaleric, 3-(2-hydroxyphenyl) propanoic and butyric acids. Bacteroidetes were positively correlated (P < 0.05) with some amino acids including L-alanine, L-threonine, 3-methylthiopropionic acid and L-glutamic acid. Conclusions Replacing maize with MBP at 1% had no negative effect on growth performance of broilers. Feeding MBP improved intestinal development and increased the relative abundance of bacteria that promotes fatty acid metabolism and fibre degradation. Implications MBP provides an alternative to maize and is a beneficial source of fibre; further research is warranted to determine the optimum feeding level.
Biochar for Improving Growth Performance of Shrimp and Environmental Quality in an Inland Saline Culture System

Abstract:The current study, which lasted 45 days, was designed to find a more effective way to use the vast resources of salt-affected land and ground saline water for aquaculture. Biochar made from agrowaste was used as a sediment amendment. The 100 g of biochar was applied to 25 kg of sediment (i.e., 9.0 ton ha-1) in 300L capacity fiber reinforced plastic, and Penaeus vannamei (P. vannamei) (2.74 ± 0.03 g) was stocked at 90 juveniles m-2 in inland ground saline water of salinity 10 ppt fortified with potassium levels that are 50% equivalent to those of seawater. Among different treatments, T1 indicates paddy straw biochar (PSB) application in sediment; T2 indicates sediment amended with KOH-activated PSB; T3 indicates sugar cane bagasse biochar (SBB) application in sediment; and T4 indicates sediment amended with KOH-activated SBB. Compared to the control the potassium (K+), alkalinity, total hardness, calcium/magnesium ratio, and pH of the water increased significantly (P ≤ 0.05) in treatments where biochar was used as an amendment in sediment. The T3 treatment had the best Ca/Mg ratio (1.00:3.12). In water, the magnitude of increase in K+ concentration from high to low followed the order: T2 > T4 > T1 > T3 > control. The concentration of NH4+-N in water was found to be increasing in control, whereas in the rest of the treatments, it decreased significantly from day 1, until the end of the experiment. Compared to control, the bulk density was decreased, and sediment cation exchange capacity and water holding capacity were increased significantly in treatments where biochar was used as an amendment. The soil microbial parameter measured in terms of soil enzyme dehydrogenase was significantly different among treatments at the end of the experiment. Weight gain (%), specific growth rate (SGR), survival (%), and feed conversion ratio of P. vannamei varied significantly in T1, T2, T3, and T4 compared to the control. The SGR (2.38b ± 0.05% day-1) and weight gain (%) in T2, and survival (96.1b ± 2.0%) in T3 treatment were found to be the highest at the end of the experiment. When biochar was mixed with sediment in the inland saline system, an improvement was seen in sediment quality, water quality, and growth characteristics of P. vannamei.

Abstract:Biochars generated from swine manure, fruit peels, Phragmites australis and Brassica rapa were applied to a Psammaquent and a Plinthudult. The Phospholipid (PLFA) markers indicating different microbial communities and available concentrations of elements (K, Ca, Na, Mg, Al, Cr, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, Ni, As, Mn, Fe, B, Mo) were measured. Relationships between microbial communities and available concentrations of elements were also calculated. Microbial communities such as bacteria, fungi, protozoa, actinobacteria, G+ve and G-ve were significantly changed within biochar type and application rate compared to the control soils. The ratio of PLFAs indicating nutritional and environmental stress in microbial communities were increased in all biochar treatments to the Plinthudult but reduced in the Psammaquent compared to the control soils. The biochar addition to soils also changed the soil available element concentrations. Such as, swine manure biochar 3% significantly increased the Ca, Mg, Cu, Zn, As and Mo available concentrations in both soils. Study concludes that different biochar types and addition rates to soils changed the microbial community structure and available element concentrations in soils. Furthermore, biochars containing lower concentration of elements such as fruit peel and B. rapa biochar application to soils can reduce the availability of elements in soils.
Effect of molasses addition at C:N ratio of 20:1 on the water quality and growth performance of giant freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii)

Abstract:A 90-day experiment consisting of two groups, a biofloc treatment and a control treatment, was performed in six indoor cement ponds to investigate the effectiveness of biofloc technology (BFT) for maintaining water quality and growth performance of Macrobrachium rosenbergii in a zero-exchange water system. Molasses was added to the biofloc ponds with the C/N ratio of 20:1 based on the amount of daily feed. The floc volume in the biofloc group increased gradually (28.72 mL L−1) along with molasses addition, but the value in the relative control group remained at low levels (0.40–4.97 mL L−1) (P < 0.05). A total of 4.97% Bacillus, 4.20% Lactococcus, and 9.65% Nitrospira were determined in the biofloc water, and these values were significantly higher than that in the control water (P < 0.05). Ammonia-N, nitrite-N, nitrate-N, and total nitrogen concentrations in the biofloc water were significantly lower than that in the relative control group (P < 0.05). Potassium orthophosphate (PO4−-P) and total phosphorous (TP) concentrations increased consistently in both groups. The same-day value of PO4−-P concentration in the control group (6.37–12.96 mg L−1) was 1.5 higher than that of the biofloc group (4.66–7.99 mg L−1) from day 60 to day 90 (P < 0.05). Significant differences in TP concentration (P < 0.05) were noted between the control and biofloc groups from the 15th day to the 30th day and from the 60th day to the 90th day. The biofloc treatment resulted in a 10.62% higher survival rate, a 27.55% higher weight gain rate, and a 7.13% higher specific growth rate (P < 0.05). The findings of the present study demonstrated that BFT effectively promoted water quality, as well as growth and survival of M. rosenbergii, by regulating the inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus dynamics.

Abstract:In this study, two anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBRs) were operated for 150days to treat bamboo industry wastewater (BIWW), and one of them was enhanced with bamboo charcoal (B-AnMBR). During the steady period, average chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiencies of 94.5±2.9% and 89.1±3.1% were achieved in B-AnMBR and AnMBR, respectively. The addition of bamboo charcoal (BC) increased the amount of biomass and improved the performance of the systems. A higher biogas production and methane yield were also observed in B-AnMBR. Regarding the issue of membrane fouling, BC lowered the soluble microbial product (SMP) content by approximately 62.73mg/L and decreased the membrane resistance, thereby mitigating membrane fouling. Analysis of the microbial communities demonstrated that BC increased the microbial diversity and promoted the activity of Methanosaeta, Methanospirillum, and Methanobacterium, which are dominant in methane production.

Abstract:A 120-day growth trial was completed to assess rearing water quality and fish performance in terms of growth, feed efficacy, digestive enzymes, immunity, and antioxidant activity of seabass fed an experimental diet (ED) supplemented with commercial wood charcoal (WC) and activated wood charcoal (AC). Three levels (0, 10, and 20 g) of WC and AC were administered, representing five treatments: control (CD) fish-fed ED without additives, (WC-1) fish-fed ED containing 10 g kg−1 WC, (WC-2) fish-fed ED containing 20 g kg−1 WC, (AC-1) fish-fed ED containing 10 g kg−1 AC, and (AC-2) fish-fed ED containing 20 g kg−1 AC. Three hundred fish (60.12 ± 0.20 g/fish) were stocked in 15 cement tanks (4.0 m × 2.0 m × 1.2 m, water volume 5 m3 each) at 20 fish/tank and a daily feed ration of 3% of body weight. Results revealed significant improvements with increased growth variables (final weight, weight gain, and specific growth rate), decreased FCR, and decreased ammonia levels and heavy metals (Cu, Cd, Fe, Mn, and Zn) content in rearing water, muscle, and liver with fish fed WC and AC supplemented diets. Furthermore, considerable improvements in digestive enzymes, immunity, and antioxidant activity, with enhanced kidneys, liver, intestines, gills, and spleen. Fish fed the WC-1 diet had a higher final weight (171.90 g), better FCR (1.25), and improved internal organs than the other groups.
