Abstract:In this chapter I reconsider Hegel’s attempt during the Jena period to overcome dogmatism and form his own philosophical alternative through critically deploying skepticism. Through this re-examination I clarify the formation of Hegel’s basic methodological tool, the concept of determinate negation. In the two first parts of the chapter I refer to the introduction of the Phenomenology of Spirit to clarify the notion of skepticism Hegel had in mind. In the third part I consider how Hegel understands the relation between skepticism and philosophy in the relevant article of the Jena period. Then I draw on Plato’s Parmenides to examine dialectics as a philosophical method which incorporates the skeptical attitude. After a short presentation of Hegel’s critique of the philosophy of subjectivity, I return to Hegel’s endeavor to ground a new form of philosophical theory that does not exclude but integrates negation as an essential part of it.

Abstract:Some authors have claimed that Hegel's ‘determinate negation’ should be distinguished from ‘logical’ or ‘formal’ negation, that is, from a view of negation as a contradictory forming operator. In contrast, I argue that dialectical determinate negation involves a view of negation as a contradictory forming operator, and can therefore count as formal negation in every respect. However, as it is clear in contemporary glutty semantics of negation, one may distinguish between different accounts of the relationship between negation, contradiction and content. I suggest that, differently from classical negation, and as glutty negation, dialectical negation has partial content.

Abstract:Adorno, like Hegel and Kant, addressed himself to the limits of thought, the bounds beyond which we cannot go since to go beyond them is to stop making sense at all. However, Adorno also thought, following a line of thought that flowers in Hegel and Marx, that what seem to be limits of thought can turn out in historical circumstances merely to be limitations that can be overcome with changed social and political circumstances. This is the core of Adorno's theory of “non‐identity.” This in turn requires him as he recognizes to take on all the Hegelian criticisms of such a view and to show how the negative dialectic not only escapes them but offers a new paradigm of dialectical thought.

Abstract:New readings have recently been offered by Frederick Beiser and Robert Brandom of Hegel, a notoriously difficult writer. I believe that both Beiser and Brandom go astray in reading Hegel otherwise than how he reads others, that is, in terms of the internal development of their theories in response to philosophical problems with which they were concerned as opposed to other, external concerns. Beiser reads Hegel’s position in the context of German idealism in order to refute it and Brandom reads it in the context of analytic philosophy to learn from it. I will be recommending an alternative reading of Hegel’s position in the context of German idealism in order to learn from it. I believe we cannot magically detach Hegel from idealism in order to learn from, or even to understand, his position. But I also believe we need to interpret German idealism differently in order to grasp Hegel’s contribution.

Abstract:The article has talked about the influence of Hegel's philosophy on post-marxism,which includes Adorno,Althusser,Laclou and Mouffe,Slavoj Zizek.All of them construct their special theory by creative interpretation of Hegel's philosophy,although they have very different views in perspective of politics or philosophy.The dialectics of Hegel is main object of this kind of interpretation.With stressing the negative,post-marxism proposed the idea of tarrying with negative:the truth lies in misunderstanding;the trait of dialectical contradiction that it is un-eliminated.These views have given the foundation of ontology of antagonism of Laclou,at last,the re-interpretation of proposition of "spirit is skull" let Spirit of Hegel equal with the Real of Lacan,which is impossible. All in all,the dialectics of Hegel is the same logic of post-marxism.

Abstract:This book defends a new interpretation of Hegel’s idealism as oriented by a philosophical and logical concept of life, focusing on Hegel’s Science of Logic . Beginning with the influence of Kant’s Critique of Judgment , Karen Ng argues that Hegel’s key philosophical contributions concerning self-consciousness, freedom, and logic all develop around the idea of internal purposiveness, which Hegel views as “Kant’s great service to philosophy.” Ng charts the development of the purposiveness theme in Kant and argues that its key innovation is the claim that the purposiveness of nature enables the operation of the power of judgment. Situating Hegel among contemporaries such as Fichte and Schelling, she further argues that this innovation is key for understanding Hegel’s philosophical method in the Differenzschrift (1801) and Phenomenology of Spirit (1807), in which the theory of self-consciousness plays a central role. In her new interpretation of Hegel’s Logic , Ng argues that the Subjective Logic can be understood as Hegel’s critique of judgment, where he defends the view that life opens up the possibility of intelligibility as such. She argues that Hegel’s theory of judgment is modeled on reflective, teleological judgments, in which something’s species or kind provides the objective context for predication. The Subjective Logic culminates in the argument that life is a primitive or original activity of judgment, the necessary presupposition for the actualization of self-conscious cognition. Ng demonstrates that absolute method is best interpreted as the ongoing dialectic between life and self-conscious cognition, providing a new way for understanding Hegel’s philosophical system.

Abstract:Arash Abazari's Hegel's Ontology of Power is a superb study of the relevance of Hegel's logic to Marx's theory. Hegel is often dismissed by Marxists as an 'idealist' denying the reality of the world, as if Hegel were Bishop Berkeley with a German accent. 1 Abazari recognizes this is not the case: '(T)he logical categories are not self-standing, but shadow, or track, the empirical world' (Abazari 2020: 7). But the world in its full actuality does not simply consist of the objects we sense or perceive. It is intrinsically intelligible, and its intelligibility can be comprehended only in thought. When it is, the 'idealist' thesis of the identity (in difference) of thought and being holds. Anyone asserting a truth claim implicitly asserts this identity. In so far as Marx asserts that Capital comprehends the capitalist mode of production, he too is an 'idealist' in the Hegelian sense of the term.

Abstract:Argumentation of Contemporary Analytic Philosophy on logical rules is experiencing the return of Hegelian thought. The reason is that Although Sellars argued that representationism of analytic tradition, which mistakenly took Kantian duality of concept and intuition as empirically separable, logically led to the myth of the Given, his argument, similared to Kant's self-legislative conception, was still within the framework of the Given. This prompted Brandon to criticize Kantian Given of logic with Hegelian pragmatism. However, his argument is free from the framework, but it is caught in Hegelian so-called skepticism which always sees in its results only pure nothingness. In this regard, Hegel's argumentation strategy is self-denial of self-consciousness by the way of interactive negotiation, which shows that the logical rules are not only the logical structure of the world and the mind, but also the pragmatic norms of lawfulness and rationality.

Abstract:In this bookthe first large-scale survey of the complex relationship between Hegel’s idealism and Anglo-American analytic philosophyTom Rockmore argues that analytic philosophy has consistently misread and misappropriated Hegel. According to Rockmore, the first generation of British analytic philosophers to engage Hegel possessed a limited understanding of his philosophy and of idealism. Succeeding generations continued to misinterpret him, and recent analytic thinkers have turned Hegel into a pragmatist by ignoring his idealism. Rockmore explains why this has happened, defends Hegel’s idealism, and points out the ways that Hegel is a key figure for analytic concerns, focusing in particular on the fact that he and analytic philosophers both share an interest in the problem of knowledge.

Abstract:The paper proposes a dialectical approach to our understanding of the relation between teleology and mechanism. This approach is dialectical both in form and content. In form , it proposes a contemporary interpretation of Hegel's metaphysical account of teleology. This account is grounded in a dialectical methodology, which consists in scrutinizing the inherent limitations of a theoretical position that lead it to suppress itself and evolve into a better one. I apply the same methodology to the function debate. For Hegel, teleology can be understood in three main variants, which can be fruitfully mapped onto the three main positions in the function debate, the key conceptual distinction being whether teleological principles are understood as extrinsic or intrinsic. When it comes to autonomous systems, i.e. systems that embody the regime of Geist , extrinsic functionality must be grounded in intrinsic functionality. My approach is dialectical also in content , insofar as it concludes that intrinsic functional ascriptions rely on the relation of co-determination between the parts and the whole of a system, as well as between the system and its environment.

Abstract:Among the various senses of ‘materialism’ distinguished in the preceding study as relevant to Marx’s understanding of it, a ‘dialectical’ variety does not figure. This may surprise the reader who has heard of Marx as a representative, or even as the effective originator of a doctrine called ‘dialectical materialism’. Now it is certainly the case that the term does not occur in Marx’s writings (nor in those of Engels for that matter).2 But it is no less true that he considered himself as using a ‘dialectical method’ and that he held a ‘dialectic’ to be at work in the real world both of nature and society.3 Unfortunately it is not at all clear what Marx meant by this. On a couple of occasions he expressed his intention of writing a short work on the subject,4 but this is one of the many projects that he did not carry through. What writing there is on the subject in the Marxist tradition gives even less help than usual.5 So there is nothing for it but to start from scratch and to try to produce an account of Marx’s thinking on this theme based on what he himself wrote.

Abstract:Philosophy is often thought to deal with problems, enigmas or conundra it seeks to answer, for instance through a theory. Wittgenstein and Hegel both challenge this view in different ways. Wittgenstein can be understood as passing through two main phases. In an initial phase, he proposes a view that presupposes a conception of language he later rejects. In a later phase, he rejects his earlier theory and philosophy in all its forms. In other words, after the effective refutation of what he earlier thought was the only approach, he drew the conclusion that there was no longer any possibly valid approach. This suggests the only possible result is skepticism, not about knowledge but rather about philosophy as a source of knowledge. In this sense, Wittgenstein suggests that in his later thought he brings philosophy to a skeptical end. In comparison to Wittgenstein, Hegel has a less extreme view. He neither claims to formulate the only possible approach to knowledge, hence to bring the tradition to an end, nor that philosophy ends in skepticism. He rather vindicates the Parmenidean approach that we are justified in claiming to know that knowledge is possible within the limits of the identity of thought and being.

Abstract:This piece threads substructurality and modality into a negation that activates the downside of equivalence and identity in a fibrational framework. The piece is a working through of negation and contradiction as type-theoretic/categorial objects, towards an immanent critique of the subtending univalent paradigm. Although this is not the terminus of the piece, i wish to try and delineate the epistemic and intra-mundane problematics intertwined therewith. The piece's terminus is a mode theory of an intuitionistic modal logic that internalises a restriction on the Double Negation Elimination rule.

Abstract:AbstractThe widespread tendency to understand phenomenology on a Husserlian model makes it incomparable with other views. I will use the term ‘phenomenology’ in a wider sense to refer to approaches to cognition based on phenomena. From the latter angle of vision, ’phenomenology’ includes not only Husserl and the Husserlians but also a wider selection of thinkers stretching back to early Greece. Although this will enlarge the scope of what counts as phenomenology, I will not be claiming that everyone is a phenomenologist. I will, however, be arguing that Kant, Hegel and Husserl are phenomenologists, or again phenomenological thinkers, and that Hegel and Husserl can be understood through their different reactions to Kantian phenomenology.

Abstract:The untitled manuscript among Hegel's Jena papers,to which editors have given the name System der Sittlichkeit(System of Ethical Life),not only refutes the long-held criticism that Hegel's thought lacks of morality,but also provides the possibility for reading Hegel's philosophical system in the light of the approaches of ancient practical philosophy which make the problems of morality first appeal to political philosophy.This article responds the interpreting frame based on the "theory of recognition" and shows the fundamental problem,from the breakdown of natural ethics to the reconstruction of ethical community developed by System der Sittlichkeit.From the perspective of free ethics and criminal connections,it reveals that there must be a desolate land of barbarism in the process of ethical civilization,which shows Hegel's unique mental adventure.Besides,the "government" is supposed to takes up this ethical and political mission to reconstruct and guard national ethical community,highlights the non-modernity of Hegel's practical philosophy,which has a significance to confront modern crisis.

Abstract:Husserl envisages transcendental phenomenology as a radically founding science that lays bare the higher-order experiences whereby logic and a theory of science become constituted. On the other hand, according to a usual presentation of Hegel's philosophy, phenomenology is "logic's precondition," and science presents itself as its "result." This alleged precedence of Hegel's phenomenology (with its experiential and historical horizons) regarding logic may be a motif behind the current affinities recently traced between Hegelian and Husserlian notions of phenomenology that highlight their views on experience, history, and the lifeworld. This paper offers instead a reconsideration of aspects of their philosophies mostly challenged or dismissed since the rise of positivism: a reappraisal of their views on the relationship between phenomenology, logic, and philosophy as an "absolute" system of sciences. The argument is made that the irreconcilable difference between their projects ultimately stands on the radical contrast between Hegel's speculative-conceptual method and system of sciences and Husserl's foundational science and method as experiential-phenomenological all the way through. Despite this methodological abyss, this paper vindicates their affinities in their refusal to segregate science from life, and their attempts to overcome modernity's inherited fragmentation of culture by providing an all-unifying approach to philosophy.

Abstract:The aim of this article is threefold. To begin with, I sketch in outline form some main aspects of Hegel’s theory of history. Second, I will consider in some detail its relation to theology, which is an important theme for his position in general, including his view of history. Finally, and since I believe that this theory is practically relevant, useful for our understanding of the historical world, I will apply Hegel’s theory of history to a practical contemporary problem, namely, 9/11. I argue that Hegel’s theory of history is best understood as a secular, idealist view based, not on theology, but rather on philosophical anthropology and idealist epistemology. Hegel’s approach to history as the result of human actions that are never irrational but in principle always rational helps us to understand the historical process. This theory is specifically useful in understanding the series of events leading up to and away from 9/11, including the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as the War on Terror.
