Abstract:Reactive catalytic fast pyrolysis (RCFP) of biomass with atmospheric pressure hydrogen was investigated in a lab-scale fluidized bed reactor with varying reaction conditions (temperature and hydrogen concentration) and catalysts. Presence of atmospheric hydrogen with candidate RCFP catalysts was found to improve the yield and quality of bio-crude and minimize the char and coke formation. A molybdenum-based catalyst was the most effective at hydrodeoxygenating biomass pyrolysis vapors to produce a hydrocarbon-rich bio-crude intermediate with low oxygen content (<10 wt%). Higher hydrogen concentration and moderate reaction temperature (450 degrees C) favored higher bio-crude yields and quality. A yield of 43.2 C% in the C4+ organic fraction with as low as 6.2 wt% oxygen in the liquid was obtained under optimized reaction conditions. The resulting bio-crude contained primarily aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, with small amounts of simple ketones, furans, and phenols. Up to 41.5% carbon in the biomass feed was converted into gas and condensable hydrocarbons with 29.7% in the condensable C4+ fraction. The improved bio-crude quality is expected to be more compatible with existing petroleum refining infrastructure.

Abstract:Fast pyrolysis bio-oils currently produced in demonstration and semi-commercial plants have potential as a fuel for stationary power production using boilers or turbines but they require significant modification to become an acceptable transportation fuel. Catalytic upgrading of pyrolysis vapors using zeolites is a potentially promising method for removing oxygen from organic compounds and converting them to hydrocarbons. This work evaluated a set of commercial and laboratory-synthesized catalysts for their hydrocarbon production performance via the pyrolysis/catalytic cracking route. Three types of biomass feedstocks; cellulose, lignin, and wood were pyrolyzed (batch experiments) in quartz boats in physical contact with the catalysts at temperature ranging from 400°C to 600°C and catalyst-to-biomass ratios of 5–10 by weight. Molecular-beam mass spectrometry (MBMS) was used to analyze the product vapor and gas composition. The highest yield of hydrocarbons (approximately 16wt.%, including 3.5wt.% of toluene) was achieved using nickel, cobalt, iron, and gallium-substituted ZSM-5. Tests performed using a semi-continuous flow reactor allowed us to observe the change in the composition of the volatiles produced by the pyrolysis/catalytic vapor cracking reactions as a function of the catalyst time-on-stream. The deoxygenation activity decreased with time because of coke deposits formed on the catalyst.

Abstract:Commercial catalysts, including zeolites (HZSM-5), fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) catalysts, transition metal catalysts (Fe/Cr), and aluminas, were successfully evaluated in a fixed bed catalytic reactor using a mixture of model compounds to simulate biomass flash pyrolysis vapors. Successful criteria including the stability index (SI), the water generation (WG), and the loss of organics (LO) were introduced to monitor the effect of catalysts and ascertain major changes in the obtained liquid product composition. SI being a measure of the effective carbonyls reduction after catalytic cracking reached 100% in the case of HZSM-5 catalysts, leading to the selective production of aromatic hydrocarbons. Transition metal catalysts (Fe/Cr) lead to the selective production of phenol and light phenolics. Comparable trends were obtained using solid biomass in the catalytic fixed bed reactor.

Abstract:The synthesis of alternative chemicals and fuels is vital in view of abnormal climate change and rapidly decreasing fossil fuel sources. The inherent hydrocarbon structure of renewable biomass enables it a promising alternative source to fossil fuels. The application of a diverse heterogeneous catalyst can selectively convert biomass-based molecules into valuable chemicals and biofuels at mild reaction conditions. Ceria is a widely used material in heterogeneous catalysis because of its notable hydrothermal stability, superior redox nature as well as adequate acid-base properties. Several advanced strategies have been developed to enrich the redox and catalytic properties of ceria by tuning its morphology, structure, and surface crystal planes as well as doping/addition of appropriate metals. This review elucidates the recent developments in the conversion of lignocellulosic biomass-based molecules using nanostructured ceria-based catalysts. The role of Ce 4+ /Ce 3+ and oxygen vacancies as well as the effect of metal doping and metal-ceria interfaces in activating carbohydrates (glucose and fructose), furans (5-HMF and furfural), and lignin-based aromatics are highlighted with detailed structure-activity, mechanistic, and theoretical studies. The prospects and challenges toward practically viable production of biomass-derived chemicals and fuels using ceria-based catalysts are emphasized.

Abstract:Bio-oils obtained from biomass pyrolysis are being recognized as the next generation energy source. However, this technology has not yet been fully employed in real practice because of highly viscous and complex chemical nature of pyrolytic products and also due to lack of adequate understanding of such non-isothermal reactions. Catalysts can be used to upgrade the quality of bio-oils by enhancing the pyrolysis reaction efficiency and breaking down higher molecular weight compounds into simpler products. The study of the kinetics of this pyrolysis process explicates in depth knowledge about the reaction mechanism to have a better control over the efficiency of pyrolysis conversion of the biomass constituent. In this study, we focus on the kinetic analysis of ceria nanoparticles catalysed pyrolysis of cellulose, the major constituent of lignocellulosic biomass, for production of high-quality bio-oil. A non-isothermal kinetic analysis method identifies the reaction to be following a ‘one and a half order’ pathway and establishes significant lowering of activation energy after addition of the nanocatalyst. The merit of the nanocatalyst was again ascertained by performing qualitative analysis of pyrolytic liquids from cellulose in the presence of both bulk and nanosized ceria catalysts. It was observed that CeO2 nanoparticles improved the pyrolysis process enhancing the C–C bond scission reactions. As a result, percentage amount of lower molecular weight (96–144) compounds in the pyrolytic liquids increased with the addition of nanocatalyst (highest being 100% for 7% ceria nanocatalyst).

Abstract:The need for energy resources is rising as a result of modernization and the industrial revolution, as well as fuel stocks are essential for security and sustainability. Research into alternative energy sources, which include solar cells and biofuels (biofuels, including biogas, bio-oil, and bio-char), is becoming more and more important as conventional fossil fuels run out. A thermochemical conversion process called pyrolysis can transform biomass into valuable compounds into bio-fuels. However, some issues such as thermal instability and excessive oxygen content require further processing. One of the fastest and most effective methods to use biomass is through pyrolysis. The selection of catalysts is a critical factor in the successful conversion of waste materials into valuable products by catalytic pyrolysis. During the pyrolysis process, catalysts can increase the calorific value of gaseous products and enhance the output and quality of significant products. Meanwhile, there are disadvantages to catalytic pyrolysis, including high hydrogen pressures and reaction temperatures, high operating costs, and catalyst deactivation. Several studies have been done to improve catalyst choices in order to increase the benefits and decrease the drawbacks of catalytic pyrolysis. By controlling product distribution and composition, altering reaction routes, and combining different catalyst types for synergistic effects, catalyst combinations can enhance catalytic performance. This systematic literature review aims to provide an overview of the impacts of combining catalysts and serve as a learning tool for future research on selecting catalyst combinations for biomass pyrolysis.

Abstract:Transforming plant biomass to biofuel and chemicals has become a global effort as results of increasing fuel demand but diminishing fossil-based energy preservation and rising concerns of climate and environmental impact. Various conversion routes involving thermochemical and biological conversions have been established and well-studied. Heterogeneous catalysis is playing a critical role in the biomass conversion and, with some unique catalytic properties, nanoporous catalysts have been extensively utilized in catalytic process of biomass conversion and exhibited exciting catalytic performance. This chapter will be devoted to nanoporous catalysts used in biomass conversion. It will start with a brief introduction of current biomass conversion technologies and then a detailed review of the application of various nanoporous materials in a large diversity of catalytic reactions in biomass conversion. The nanoporous materials include zeolites and zeotypes, metal–organic frameworks, nanoporous carbons and carbon nitrides, nanoporous oxides, hydroxides and complex oxide forms, porous organic polymers, and porous metals.

Abstract:The downstream processing of biocrudes obtained from direct biomass pyrolysis poses significant challenges due to stability issues, necessitating costly upgrading for further coprocessing with refinery feeds. This study examines the impact of torrefaction pretreatment on pyrolysis product distribution and biocrude composition using sawdust (SD) and groundnut shell (GS) feeds. Torrefaction was conducted at varying temperatures (200, 250 and 300°C) for 30 min under different reactor conditions. Increasing the severity of torrefaction resulted in decreased biocrude yields with reduced water content and gas formation, particularly evident with GS. A torrefaction temperature of 250°C and 30 min of pretreatment yielded higher phenolics and hydrocarbons. This increase in phenolics can be attributed to lignin enrichment during torrefaction, which, in the presence of a catalyst, undergoes deoxygenation leading to hydrocarbon formation. The influence of feed particle size, whether in powder or pellet form, on biocrude yield and composition was found to be minimal. Catalytic pyrolysis of SD using molecular sieve catalysts yielded the highest hydrocarbon (42%) and aromatic content (44%) at catalyst to biomass ratios of 1:1 and 2:3. The combination of torrefaction and pyrolysis was shown to enhance the quality of biocrude by increasing its hydrocarbon content, but at the expense of lower liquid yields. Experimental observations were supported by statistical analysis tools such as principal component analysis, which assessed pyrolysis product yields and composition.

Abstract:The present study deals with the development, characterization, and performance of a Ni-based catalyst over a ceria-doped alumina support as a post-gasification step, in the conversion of biomass-derived tars. The catalysts were prepared using the incipient wetness technique and characterized chemically and physically using NH3-TPD, CO2-TPD, H2-TPR, XRD, Pyridine-FTIR, N2 physisorption, and H2-Pulse Chemisorption. It was observed that the 5 wt% CeO2 reduced the strong and very strong acid sites of the alumina support and helped with the dispersion of nickel. It was noticed that the nickel crystallite sizes and metal dispersion remained unchanged as the nickel loading increased. The performance of the catalysts was studied in a mini-fluidized CREC Riser Simulator at different temperatures and reaction times. The selected tar surrogate was 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol, given its functional group similarities with lignin-derived tars. A H2/CO2 gas blend was used to emulate the syngas at post-gasification conditions. The obtained tar surrogate conversion was higher than 75%, regardless of the reaction conditions. Furthermore, the catalysts used in this research provided an enhancement in the syngas product composition when compared to that observed in the thermal experiments. The presence of hydrocarbons greater than CH4 (C1+) was reduced at 525 °C, from 96 ± 3% with no catalyst, to 85 ± 2% with catalyst and steam, to 68 ± 4% with catalyst and steam-H2/CO2. Thus, the catalyst that we developed promoted tar cracking, tar reforming, and water-gas shift reactions, with a H2/CO ratio higher than 3.8, providing a syngas suitable for alcohol synthesis.

Abstract:The depletion of fossil fuel reserves and the growing demand for alternative energy sources are the main drivers of biomass and carbonaceous waste utilization. Particularly, non-edible lignocellulosic biomass is the most attractive renewable feedstock due to its abundance. Pyrolysis of biomass produces highly oxygenated compounds with oxygen content >35 wt%. The cost-effective elimination of oxygen from the pyrolysis oil is the most challenging task impeding the commercialization of biomass to biofuel processes. The effective hydrogen/carbon ratio in biomass pyrolysis oil is low (0.3), requiring external hydrogen supply to produce hydrocarbon-rich oils. Exploiting hydrogen-rich feedstock particularly, solid waste (plastic, tyre and scum) and other low-cost feedstock (lubricant oil, methane, methanol, and ethanol) offer an eco-friendly solution to upgrade the produced bio-oil. Multi-functional catalysts that are capable of cleaving oxygen, promoting hydrogen transfer and depolymerisation must be developed to produce hydrocarbon-rich oil from biomass. This review compares catalytic co-pyrolysis studies based on zeolites, mesoporous silica and metal oxides. Furthermore, a wide range of catalyst modifications and the role of each feedstock were summarised to give a complete picture of the progress made on biomass co-pyrolysis research and development.
Highly efficient catalytic pyrolysis of biomass vapors upgraded into jet fuel range hydrocarbon-rich bio-oil over a bimetallic Pt–Ni/γ-Al2O3 catalyst

Abstract:Catalytic pyrolysis is an effective method for converting biomass to value-added chemicals. However, the development of cost-effective catalysts remains a major challenge. In this study, a highly efficient bimetallic Pt–Ni catalyst (Pt to Ni ratio = 0:1, 2:1, 1:1, 1:2, 1:0) was fabricated and used for catalytic biomass pyrolysis upgrading into hydrocarbon-rich bio-oil with pyrolysis-gaschromatography × gaschromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC∗ GC/MS). The product yield and selectivity of upgraded bio-oil, thermal properties, kinetic and deactivation mechanisms were also determined to investigate the reaction mechanism. It was determined that Pt addition strengthened the NiO and alumina interaction and improved nickel dispersion, promoting CO hydrogenation. Bimetallic catalysts had a higher stability and activity owing to synergistic action of platinum and nickel on γ-Al2O3, and the surface oxygen vacancies were derived from the electron transfer of Pt to Ni and the higher number of super acid-base sites, which inhibited coke deposition. In addition, the higher valence Pt (Pt2+) in the catalyst was favorable for decarboxylation and hydrodecarbonylation reactions. Various metal ratios were employed, and the Pt–Ni/Al = 1:2 catalyst exhibited an excellent catalytic performance, achieving highest peak areas of desired hydrocarbons and aromatic hydrocarbons at 52.67% and 40.25%, respectively, and the lowest peak area of deposited coke at 7.26%, along with a 13.98% weightloss rate.

Abstract:How to achieve high value modification of biomass through simple process and low cost is an important bottleneck in the development of biomass energy. In this study, hydrogen-rich syngas, phenol-rich bio-oil and high specific surface area nanostructured porous carbon materials were synthesized by one-step in situ catalytic pyrolysis at 500 °C. Composition and physicochemical property tests of the three-phase products showed that KOH promotes ring opening and bond breaking of macromolecules in the bio-oil, improves the directional selectivity of phenolic compounds, and generates more small molecule gases. Molten K + and water vapor etched the biomass to prepare porous carbon with high graphitization and rich pore structure and generate more H 2 . Further electrochemical characterization showed that the porous carbon material had good specific capacitance and cyclic stability. This study provides a new idea for the utilization of pyrolysis polygeneration technology of agroforestry biomass resources, and it is also of guiding significance for the research of high-value utilization of biomass resources.

Abstract:It is imperative to develop more efficient processes for conversion of biomass to liquid fuels, such that the cost of these fuels would be competitive with the cost of fuels derived from petroleum. We report a catalytic approach for the conversion of carbohydrates to specific classes of hydrocarbons for use as liquid transportation fuels, based on the integration of several flow reactors operated in a cascade mode, where the effluent from the one reactor is simply fed to the next reactor. This approach can be tuned for production of branched hydrocarbons and aromatic compounds in gasoline, or longer-chain, less highly branched hydrocarbons in diesel and jet fuels. The liquid organic effluent from the first flow reactor contains monofunctional compounds, such as alcohols, ketones, carboxylic acids, and heterocycles, that can also be used to provide reactive intermediates for fine chemicals and polymers markets.

Improving the Conversion of Biomass in Catalytic Pyrolysis via Intensification of Biomass—Catalyst Contact by Co-Pressing

Abstract:Biomass pyrolysis is a promising technology for fuel and chemical production from an abundant renewable source. It takes place usually in two stages; non-catalytic pyrolysis with further catalytic upgrading of the formed pyrolysis oil. The direct catalytic pyrolysis of biomass reduces the pyrolysis temperature, increase the yield to target products and improves their quality. However, in such one-stage process the contact between biomass and solid catalyst particles is poor leading to an excessively high degree of pure thermal pyrolysis reactions. The aim of this study was to enhance the catalyst-biomass contact via co-pressing of biomass and catalyst particles as a pre-treatment method. Catalytic pyrolysis of biomass components with HY and USY zeolites was studied using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), as well as experiments in a pyrolysis reactor. The liquid and coke yields were characterized using gas chromatography, and TGA respectively. The TGA results showed that the degradation of the co-pressed cellulose occurred at lower temperatures compared to the pure thermal degradation, as well as catalytic degradation of non-pretreated cellulose. All biomass components produced better results using the co-pressing method, where the liquid yields increased while coke/char yields decreased. Bio-oil from catalytic pyrolysis of cellulose with HY catalyst mainly produced heavier fractions, while in the presence of USY catalyst medium fraction was mainly produced within the gasoline range. For hemicellulose catalytic pyrolysis, the catalysts had similar effects in enhancing the lighter fraction, but specifically, HY showed higher selectivity to middle fraction while USY has produced higher percentage of lighter fraction. Using with both catalysts, co-pressing had the best effect of eliminating the heavier fraction and improving the gasoline range fraction. Spent catalyst from co-pressed sample had lower concentrations of coke/char components due to the shorter residence times of volatiles, which suppresses the occurrence of secondary reactions leading to coke/char formations.

Abstract:Zeolite catalysts with micropores present good catalytic characteristics in biomass catalytic pyrolysis process. However, large-molecule oxygenates produced from pyrolysis cannot enter their pores and would form coke on their surfaces, which decreases hydrocarbon yield and deactivates catalyst rapidly. This paper proposed adding some mesoporous and macroporous catalysts (Gamma-Al2O3, CaO and MCM-41) in the microporous catalyst (LOSA-1) for biomass catalytic pyrolysis. The added catalysts were used to crack the large-molecule oxygenates into small-molecule oxygenates, while LOSA-1 was used to convert these small-molecule oxygenates into olefins and aromatics. The results show that all the additives in LOSA-1 enhanced hydrocarbon yield obviously. The maximum aromatic+olefin yield of 25.3% obtained with 10% Gamma-Al2O3/90% LOSA-1, which was boosted by 39.8% compared to that obtained with pure LOSA-1. Besides, all the additives in LOSA-1 improved the selectivities of low-carbon components in olefins and aromatics significantly.

Abstract:Pyrolysis of biomass with and without a catalyst was investigated using thermogravimetric analysis coupled with Pyrolysis-Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry. The effect of two completely different catalysts (a basic catalyst:CaO, and an acidic catalyst:HZSM-5) on pyrolysis characteristics and the composition of pyrolysis vapors, as well as aromatic selectivity, were studied. A characteristic analysis of catalysts (using XRD, BET, FTIR, NH3-TPD and SEM), the effect of catalytic temperature, the CaO to HZSM-5 ratio and the biomass to catalyst ratio on the distribution of products were also investigated and analyzed. Coke formation and deposition mechanisms and the relationship between the formation and characteristics of the coke and the deactivation of the catalyst were also demonstrated. The results demonstrate that the pyrolysis characteristics of the biomass were changed by the addition of CaO (bond breaking) and HZSM-5 (deoxygenation) catalysts, causing the solid residue rate to increase significantly, the maximum weight loss rate to decrease and the biomass conversion rate to increase. The order of the activity of the catalysts is HZSM-5 > CaO/HZSM-5 > CaO; at the same time, characteristic parameters such as activation energy, activation enthalpy, activation entropy and the steric parameter increased significantly at the expense of the reaction ratio. Moreover, CaO mixed with HZSM-5 catalyst can improve the gas content and aromatic hydrocarbon content significantly. However, the content of bio-oil decreased slightly, and the maximum aromatic content was 72 wt% of peak area of that for pure HZSM-5 catalyst (69 wt% of peak area) at a pyrolysis temperature of 450 degrees C and a catalytic temperature of 550 degrees C. The ratio of CaO to HZSM-5 was 1:2, and the biomass to catalyst ratio was 1:2. In addition, the selectivities with toluene and xylene were 27% and 35%, respectively. This paper describes a process for the high-value utilization of biomass as a sustainable resource for the production of hydrocarbons, especially for the preparation of the high-quality chemical p-xylene.

Abstract:The depletion of fossil fuels has prompted research into alternative fuels made from regeneration of waste materials. Pyrolysis is a method of converting waste oil into valuable products, such as char, gas, and fuel. This study presents the catalytic pyrolysis of waste oil for producing fuel utilizing cerium oxide, CeO2/Al2O3 and zinc oxide, ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst. The catalyst and oil were characterized using several characterization techniques to find the physicochemical properties of the catalyst and oil. The optimum condition for catalytic pyrolysis was a reaction temperature at 500 °C, with the heating rate at 10 °C/min, utilizing CeO2/Al2O3 catalyst calcined at 700 °C. The catalytic pyrolysis successfully converted the waste oil into fuel and the oil product obtained was 93.01 wt% with a high calorific value (54.2 MJ/kg). The pyrolysis oil is comprised of aliphatic hydrocarbon (C5–C15 hydrocarbon) that is within the hydrocarbon range for gasoline and diesel. The oil product was also detected to have a low content of oxygen (3.07 wt%) and sulfur (0.60 wt%), indicating its potential to serve as a cleaner, fuel reducing the sulfur dioxide, SOX formation. The results reveal that pyrolysis reactors have the ability to convert waste oil into hydrocarbon fuel.
