This review presents a summary of recent research in catalysts which were used in biomass pyrolysis, focusing on the catalysts applied, upgrading methods and reaction mechanisms.

Abstract:Reactive catalytic fast pyrolysis (RCFP) of biomass with atmospheric pressure hydrogen was investigated in a lab-scale fluidized bed reactor with varying reaction conditions (temperature and hydrogen concentration) and catalysts. Presence of atmospheric hydrogen with candidate RCFP catalysts was found to improve the yield and quality of bio-crude and minimize the char and coke formation. A molybdenum-based catalyst was the most effective at hydrodeoxygenating biomass pyrolysis vapors to produce a hydrocarbon-rich bio-crude intermediate with low oxygen content (<10 wt%). Higher hydrogen concentration and moderate reaction temperature (450 degrees C) favored higher bio-crude yields and quality. A yield of 43.2 C% in the C4+ organic fraction with as low as 6.2 wt% oxygen in the liquid was obtained under optimized reaction conditions. The resulting bio-crude contained primarily aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, with small amounts of simple ketones, furans, and phenols. Up to 41.5% carbon in the biomass feed was converted into gas and condensable hydrocarbons with 29.7% in the condensable C4+ fraction. The improved bio-crude quality is expected to be more compatible with existing petroleum refining infrastructure.

Abstract:Abstract Biochar is a solid residual produced from the thermochemical conversion of lignocellulosic biomass via pyrolysis or gasification. It is abundantly available and has a unique structure as well as multiple functionalities. This makes biochar a potential candidate for use as a catalyst or support in catalytic reactions relating to biomass conversion such as catalytic pyrolysis, gasification, esterification of bio-oil, tar reforming, hydrothermal treatments and upgrading of bio-oil. Although numerous studies have been conducted on the potential use of biochar in various catalysis reactions, information on the overall overview and evaluation of the feasibilities of its use, especially in biomass-related conversions, is still limited. This study reviews the state-of-the-art for the production of biochar catalyst as well as its application as a catalyst or support for catalysts in producing biofuel or syngas from biomass. Special attention is given to the reaction pathway of reactants over the surface of biochar and the potential application of biochar in commercial applications. The prospects and challenges for the application of biochar as catalysts for the thermal conversion of biomass are also proposed.

Abstract:This paper reports the progress of catalysts for improving the hydrocarbon compounds in bio-oil obtained from catalytic pyrolysis of biomass. In addition, the effects of the other operating conditions, such as temperature, type of biomass, heating rate, vapors residence time, carrier gas, and hydrogen donor on the yield and properties of bio-oil have been briefly explored. Temperature and catalysts type were found to have major impact on the bio-oil yield and quality. TGA-DTA analysis of biomass revealed that major biomasses pyrolysis zone for high bio-oil yield is in the range of 400–600 °C. Pilot, semi-pilot and large-scale units reported an average temperature of 500 °C for pyrolysis of biomass. The development of advanced catalysts such as zeolite-based catalysts, supported transition and noble metal catalysts, and metal oxide catalysts have been designed to remove the undesired compounds and to increase the hydrocarbon yield in bio-oil. Noble metal supported catalysts produced bio-oil with a low content of oxygenated compounds compared to non-noble metal catalysts; however, their cost and accessibility favor the utilization of non-noble metal supported catalysts.

Abstract:Reactive catalytic fast pyrolysis (RCFP) of biomass with atmospheric pressure hydrogen is a promising route for the deoxygenation of biomass pyrolysis vapors while retaining high carbon yields in the bio-crude. RCFP process development was accomplished in a bench-scale bubbling fluidized-bed reactor with in situ catalyst configuration. Results are presented that highlight the impact of temperature, biomass weight hourly space velocity (WHSV), reaction pressure, and time on stream on the hydrodeoxygenation of different oxygen-containing species produced during biomass reactive catalytic fast pyrolysis to improve the bio-crude product yield and quality. The highest bio-crude and C4+ hydrocarbons yield was 46.5 wt % on a carbon basis. The optimal temperature range for RCFP is 450-475 degrees C; the biomass WHSV should be kept low, around 0.6 h(-1) in this reactor system, to produce a low oxygen content bio-crude (7.2 wt %), and improvements in the bio-crude yield and quality based on increased pressure are less significant beyond 2.7 bar. The product composition varies by at most 10% for up to 3.5 h' time on stream (biomass-to-catalyst ratio of 2.6 g g(-1)), indicating a stable catalyst activity for hydrodeoxygenation.
In-depth Study of Synergism Between Torrefaction and Catalyst for Balanced Production of Bio-Oil from Rice Husk Pyrolysis Based on Hydrocarbons Production, Energy Yield and Deoxygenation Degree

Abstract:Previous studies concerning biomass to bio-oil mainly focused on hydrocarbons production, and how to balance the bio-oil production in terms of hydrocarbons production, energy yield and deoxygenation degree is a challenging issue. After the pretreatment of torrefaction, catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) was performed at two-zone fixed-bed reactor. The synergism between torrefaction and catalyst during torrefaction-catalytic fast pyrolysis (T-CFP) was investigated for the balanced production of bio-oil from rice husk. Firstly, the results of two catalysts (ZrO2/n-ZSM-5 and ZrO2/n-ZSM-5/attapulgite) indicated that the catalyst with the incorporation of attapulgite (ATP) could realize the balance between the acid and basic sites, which resulted in deeper deoxygenation. Then, the results of torrefaction-catalytic pyrolysis showed that, among three torrefaction temperatures adopted, mild torrefaction (210 degrees C) had better synergistic effects with both catalysts. Specifically, catalytic pyrolysis of biomass after mild torrefaction over both catalysts realized the enhancement of deoxygenation degree and energy yield. Moreover, with the pretreatment of mild torrefaction, the performance of ZrO2/n-ZSM-5/ATP turned out to be obviously superior to ZrO2/n-ZSM-5 in terms of hydrocarbons production (7.5% > 0.8%) and deoxygenation mode. Therefore, the combination of ZrO2/n-ZSM-5/ATP and mild torrefaction could achieve more balanced production of bio-oil from T-CFP process.
Catalytic fast pyrolysis of biomass: Selective deoxygenation to balance the quality and yield of bio-oil

Abstract:Firstly, the operating conditions were screened for biomass pyrolysis in a fixed bed with respect to higher oil yield. A temperature of 600 °C with an N2 flow of 80 ml/min exhibited the highest bio-oil yield. Then, the catalytic pyrolysis of biomass with various catalysts (Al2O3, CaO, MgO, CuO, Fe2O3, NiO, ZnO, ZrO2, TiO2, HZSM-5 and MCM-41) was studied to identify the selective deoxygenation method with respect to improve bio-oil quality with smaller drop in bio-oil yield. With the addition of CaO, the oxygen was mainly removed in the form of CO2, while, in other cases, more oxygen was removed in the form of H2O. Furthermore, more decarboxylation or less dehydration is better for the balance between yield and deoxygenation amount, and the preferred decarboxylation would lead to a higher pH and lower moisture content of bio-oil.
A Review of Recent Research on Catalytic Biomass Pyrolysis and Low-Pressure Hydropyrolysis

Abstract:Direct catalytic upgrading of biomass-derived fast pyrolysis vapors can occur in different process configurations, under either inert or hydrogen-containing atmospheres. This review summarizes the myriad of different catalysts studied and benchmarks their deoxygenation performance by also taking into account the resulting decrease in bio-oil yield compared to a thermal pyrolysis oil. Generally, catalyst modifications aim at improving the initial selectivity of the catalyst to more desirable oxygen-free hydrocarbons and/or improving the catalysts’ stability against deactivation by coking. Optimizing the pore structure and acid site density/distribution of solid acid catalysts can slow down deactivation and prolong activity. Basic catalysts such as MgO and Na2O/γ-Al2O3 are excellent ketonization catalysts favoring oxygen removal via decarboxylation, whereas solid acid catalysts such as zeolites primarily favor decarbonylation and dehydration. Basic catalysts can therefore produce bio-oils with higher H/C ratios. However, since their coke formation per surface area is higher, compared to a microporous HZSM-5 zeolite, precoking (or imperfect regeneration) of these basic catalysts and operating for longer time-on-stream can be approaches to improve the oil yield. In-line vapor-phase upgrading with a dual bed comprising a solid acid catalyst followed by a basic catalyst active in ketonization and aldol condensation further improves deoxygenation while maintaining high bio-oil carbon recovery. Also low-cost catalysts such as iron-rich red mud have deoxygenation activity. An improved bio-oil carbon recoverycompared at a similar level of oxygen removalcan be obtained when changing from an inert atmosphere to a hydrogen-containing atmosphere and using an effective hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) catalyst. To keep costs low, this can be conducted at near-atmospheric pressure conditions. Pt/TiO2 and MoO3/TiO2 showed high activity and reduced coke formation. Stable performance has been demonstrated using Pt/TiO2 for 100+ reaction/regeneration cycles with woody biomass feedstock. If future works can demonstrate the same durability for lower-cost biomass containing higher contents of ash, N, and S, this would considerably boost the commercial viability of near-atmospheric pressure HDO. Further research should be directed to testing the durability of lower-cost HDO catalysts such as MoO3/TiO2 and further improving the activity and stability of lower-cost catalysts.

Abstract:Upgrading operation of bio-oil pyrolyzed from biomass was carried out via catalytic cracking in a tubular fixed-bed reactor with catalyst for preparation of motor fuel.Effects of process parameters such as temperature,weight space velocity (WHSV) and catalyst type on yield were in- vestigated under the conditions of atmospheric pressure,the temperature 340-420℃ anal WHSV 2.9-5.6 h~(-1).The results showed that 44.68% of organic distillate was yielded at temperature 380℃ and WHSV 3.7 h~(-1).More organic distillate was obtained when HZSM-5 (50) used as cata- lyst,while lesst coke when Gaolin used as catalyst.It was found that coking is the main cause of deactivation and short life of catalysts through the experiment of regeneration of deactivation cata- lyst.In addition,the amount of oxygenated compounds in the bio-oil,such as organic acid,alde- hyde,ester,alcohol,ketone were greatly reduced meanwhile aromatic hydrocarbons and polyaro- matic hydrocarbons were formed.
A review on advanced catalytic co-pyrolysis of biomass and hydrogen-rich feedstock: Insights into synergistic effect, catalyst development and reaction mechanism

Abstract:The depletion of fossil fuel reserves and the growing demand for alternative energy sources are the main drivers of biomass and carbonaceous waste utilization. Particularly, non-edible lignocellulosic biomass is the most attractive renewable feedstock due to its abundance. Pyrolysis of biomass produces highly oxygenated compounds with oxygen content >35 wt%. The cost-effective elimination of oxygen from the pyrolysis oil is the most challenging task impeding the commercialization of biomass to biofuel processes. The effective hydrogen/carbon ratio in biomass pyrolysis oil is low (0.3), requiring external hydrogen supply to produce hydrocarbon-rich oils. Exploiting hydrogen-rich feedstock particularly, solid waste (plastic, tyre and scum) and other low-cost feedstock (lubricant oil, methane, methanol, and ethanol) offer an eco-friendly solution to upgrade the produced bio-oil. Multi-functional catalysts that are capable of cleaving oxygen, promoting hydrogen transfer and depolymerisation must be developed to produce hydrocarbon-rich oil from biomass. This review compares catalytic co-pyrolysis studies based on zeolites, mesoporous silica and metal oxides. Furthermore, a wide range of catalyst modifications and the role of each feedstock were summarised to give a complete picture of the progress made on biomass co-pyrolysis research and development.

Abstract:Biomass, as a very important renewable resource, its efficient conversion was an important way to achieve zero CO 2 emissions, provide clean and renewable energy, and promote the resource utilization of agricultural waste. Biomass pyrolysis, as a technology that could simultaneously obtain high value-added energy and chemical products such as biochar, bio-oil, and combustible gas, had received widespread attention, in which the role of catalysts in biomass pyrolysis had also been widely studied. In this thesis, the application of catalysts in biomass pyrolysis was reviewed in detail on the basis of introducing the principle and pyrolysis methods of biomass pyrolysis, and found that catalysts could effectively improve the distribution and properties of pyrolysis products, especially for the reforming of bio-oil and bio-gas, which had shown outstanding performance in green energy and functional chemicals. At the same time, the current problems of catalysts in biomass pyrolysis were analyzed, and new thoughts were proposed for future research on biomass catalytic pyrolysis, with a view to providing new ways for efficient catalytic pyrolysis and green sustainable development of biomass.

Abstract:Biomass is a renewable source and potentially sustainable fossil fuel replacement due to its availability, lower processing cost, high conversion, and lower life cycle carbon emissions. Pyrolysis can be used to convert biomass into bio-oil, but the quality of bio-oil is usually poor exhibiting high viscosity, thermal instability, and corrosiveness. This review article is focused on the application of catalytic pyrolysis towards obtaining high-quality bio-oil and advanced techniques for bio-oil characterisation. Structural arrangement (i.e., mesoporous, microporous), number of acid sites (Lewis and Brønsted acid sites), and amount of metal loading play a key role on deoxygenation reactions and selective production of aromatic hydrocarbons. Hierarchical zeolites doped with noble metals favour hydrogenation of C▬O or C〓O and reduce coke deposition in the production of polycyclic aromatics. Overall reaction mechanisms, aromatic yield and selectivity, the effect of Si/Al ratio, and process challenges of metal loaded zeolites are summarized. The advantages and disadvantages of different types of advanced analytical techniques for bio-oil characterisation are also discussed. The results showed that two-dimensional gas chromatography (2D GC) technique can identify 70% of chromatograph from bio-oil analysis. However, there is need to combine analytical techniques to accurately quantify bio-oil components.

Abstract:Fast pyrolysis bio-oils currently produced in demonstration and semi-commercial plants have potential as a fuel for stationary power production using boilers or turbines but they require significant modification to become an acceptable transportation fuel. Catalytic upgrading of pyrolysis vapors using zeolites is a potentially promising method for removing oxygen from organic compounds and converting them to hydrocarbons. This work evaluated a set of commercial and laboratory-synthesized catalysts for their hydrocarbon production performance via the pyrolysis/catalytic cracking route. Three types of biomass feedstocks; cellulose, lignin, and wood were pyrolyzed (batch experiments) in quartz boats in physical contact with the catalysts at temperature ranging from 400°C to 600°C and catalyst-to-biomass ratios of 5–10 by weight. Molecular-beam mass spectrometry (MBMS) was used to analyze the product vapor and gas composition. The highest yield of hydrocarbons (approximately 16wt.%, including 3.5wt.% of toluene) was achieved using nickel, cobalt, iron, and gallium-substituted ZSM-5. Tests performed using a semi-continuous flow reactor allowed us to observe the change in the composition of the volatiles produced by the pyrolysis/catalytic vapor cracking reactions as a function of the catalyst time-on-stream. The deoxygenation activity decreased with time because of coke deposits formed on the catalyst.

Abstract:With the aggravation of the energy crisis and environmental problems, biomass resource, as a renewable carbon resource, has received great attention. Catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) is a promising technology, which can convert solid biomass into high value liquid fuel, bio-char and syngas. Catalyst plays a vital role in the rapid pyrolysis, which can increase the yield and selectivity of aromatics and other products in bio-oil. In this paper, the traditional zeolite catalysts and metal modified zeolite catalysts used in CFP are summarized. The influence of the catalysts on the yield and selectivity of the product obtained from pyrolysis was discussed. The deactivation and regeneration of the catalyst were discussed. Catalytic co-pyrolysis (CCP) and microwave-assisted pyrolysis (MAP) are new technologies developed in traditional pyrolysis technology. CCP improves the problem of hydrogen deficiency in the biomass pyrolysis process and raises the yield and character of pyrolysis products, through the co-feeding of biomass and hydrogen-rich substances. The pyrolysis reactions of biomass and polymers (plastics and waste tires) in CCP were reviewed to obtain the influence of co-pyrolysis on composition and selectivity of pyrolysis products. The catalytic mechanism of the catalyst in CCP and the reaction path of the product are described, which is very important to improve the understanding of co-pyrolysis technology. In addition, the effects of biomass pretreatment, microwave adsorbent, catalyst and other reaction conditions on the pyrolysis products of MAP were reviewed, and the application of MAP in the preparation of high value-added biofuels, activated carbon and syngas was introduced.

Abstract:Considering the depletion of natural resources, growing environmental problems, massive demand for petroleum, the investigation of pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass for liquid biofuel (bio-oil) production rich in monocyclic aromatics is getting popular. However, the crude bio-oil has many shortcomings which can be mainly attributed to its high content of oxygen in primary products. Catalytic co-pyrolysis is considered an economical method for producing considerable biofuels to replace conventional energy. The addition of co-feedings and catalysts and suitable reactors could significantly enhance the yield of bio-oil and promote the generation of monocyclic aromatics. This paper is aimed to introduce the structure of the main components of lignocellulosic biomass and reveals the pyrolysis chemistry through the behaviors that occurred during the catalytic co-pyrolysis. The recent progress and development in the field of biomass catalytic co-pyrolysis were comprehensively reviewed in terms of selection of biomass, pretreatment of raw materials, kinds of catalysts, application of co-feedings, and set of reactors, for promoting monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbon production in bio-oil and improving its quality.

Abstract:Using biomass as a renewable resource to produce biofuels and high-value chemicals through fast pyrolysis offers significant application value and wide market possibilities, especially in light of the current energy and environmental constraints. Bio-oil from fast-pyrolysis has various conveniences over raw biomass, including simpler transportation and storage and a higher energy density. The catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) is a complex technology which is affected by several parameters, mainly the biomass type, composition, and the interaction between components, process operation, catalysts, reactor types, and production scale or pre-treatment techniques. Nevertheless, due to its complicated makeup, high water and oxygen presence, low heating value, unstable nature, elevated viscosity, corrosiveness, and insolubility within conventional fuels, crude bio-oil has drawbacks. In this context, catalysts are added to reactor to decrease activation energy, substitute the output composition, and create valuable compounds and higher-grade fuels. The study aim is to explore the suitability of lignocellulosic biomasses as an alternative feedstock in CFP for the optimization of bio-oil production. Furthermore, we provide an up-to-date review of the challenges in bio-oil production from CFP, including the factors and parameters that affect its production and the effect of used catalysis on its quality and yield. In addition, this work describes the advanced upgrading methods and applications used for products from CFP, the modeling and simulation of the CFP process, and the application of life cycle assessment. The complicated fluid dynamics and heat transfer mechanisms that take place during the pyrolysis process have been better understood due to the use of CFD modeling in studies on biomass fast pyrolysis. Zeolites have been reported for their superior performance in bio-oil upgrading. Indeed, Zeolites as catalyses have demonstrated significant catalytic effects in boosting dehydration and cracking process, resulting in the production of final liquid products with elevated H/C ratios and small C/O ratios. Combining ex-situ and in-situ catalytic pyrolysis can leverage the benefits of both approaches. Recent studies recommend more and more the development of pyrolysis-based bio-refinery processes where these approaches are combined in an optimal way, considering sustainable and circular approaches.

Abstract:Considering the pressures of energy and the environment, using renewable resource—biomass to obtain hydrocarbon fuels and high-value chemicals has important application value and broad market prospects. However, due to the complex pyrolysis process of biomass, low calorific value, high oxygen content and strong acidity of bio-oil, the application of bio-oil as liquid fuel and chemicals are restricted. It is urgent to improve the quality of bio-oil. In this paper, the effects of biomass raw materials, pretreatment methods, co-pyrolysis of hydrogen donors and pyrolysis reaction conditions on the preparation of bio-oil by fast pyrolysis of biomass are described in detail. The article further discusses the research progress of biomass pyrolysis to prepare liquid fuel and high-value chemicals, including direct catalytic pyrolysis of biomass to prepare high-quality bio-oil, fast pyrolysis to prepare bio-oil and then catalytic upgrading, pyrolysis to prepare ketone and furan platform compounds, and then aldol condensation and catalytic hydrogenation. The main achievements and problems of three different synthesis techniques are reviewed objectively. Finally, the catalytic characteristics of catalysts are introduced by classification, and the specific applications and reaction mechanisms of different catalysts in catalytic pyrolysis, catalytic cracking and catalytic hydrogenation are systematically summarized, which provides a new direction for the research of lignocellulose biomass energy utilization.

Abstract:How to achieve high value modification of biomass through simple process and low cost is an important bottleneck in the development of biomass energy. In this study, hydrogen-rich syngas, phenol-rich bio-oil and high specific surface area nanostructured porous carbon materials were synthesized by one-step in situ catalytic pyrolysis at 500 °C. Composition and physicochemical property tests of the three-phase products showed that KOH promotes ring opening and bond breaking of macromolecules in the bio-oil, improves the directional selectivity of phenolic compounds, and generates more small molecule gases. Molten K + and water vapor etched the biomass to prepare porous carbon with high graphitization and rich pore structure and generate more H 2 . Further electrochemical characterization showed that the porous carbon material had good specific capacitance and cyclic stability. This study provides a new idea for the utilization of pyrolysis polygeneration technology of agroforestry biomass resources, and it is also of guiding significance for the research of high-value utilization of biomass resources.

Abstract:Oil produced by the pyrolysis of biomass and co-pyrolysis of biomass with waste synthetic polymers has significant potential as a substitute for fossil fuels. However, the relatively poor properties found in pyrolysis oil—such as high oxygen content, low caloric value, and physicochemical instability—hampers its practical utilization as a commercial petroleum fuel replacement or additive. This review focuses on pyrolysis catalyst design, impact of using real waste feedstocks, catalyst deactivation and regeneration, and optimization of product distributions to support the production of high value-added products. Co-pyrolysis of two or more feedstock materials is shown to increase oil yield, caloric value, and aromatic hydrocarbon content. In addition, the co-pyrolysis of biomass and polymer waste can contribute to a reduction in production costs, expand waste disposal options, and reduce environmental impacts. Several promising options for catalytic pyrolysis to become industrially viable are also discussed.

Abstract:Fast-rising population and economic growth are inducing a rapid increase in the energy demand. To date, fossil fuels constitute the primary energy source, but their combustion emits greenhouse gases responsible of global warming. Therefore, developing environment-friendly energy sources is critical. For instance, pyrolysis converts biomass into valuable compounds such as syngas, biochar, and bio-oil, yet produced bio-oil and biogas require further upgrading processes before their use. Current processes include gasification, purification, separation, and catalytic pyrolysis. For syngas synthesis, applying one or a couple of these processes leads to low product yields since they favor the production of bio-oil or biogas. Moreover, tar formation during biomass pyrolysis remains a major technological issue in reactor design. Catalytic reforming is an attractive and efficient method for tar removal via tar oxidation into valuable gases. More importantly, catalytic reforming of pyrolysis volatile products constitutes a promising approach for both tar removal and biogas conversion into syngas. Here, we review the two major catalytic approaches of biomass valorization: catalytic pyrolysis and pyrolysis-catalytic reforming. We demonstrate that the catalytic pyrolysis mainly upgrades bio-oil, while pyrolysis-catalytic efficiently converts biomass into syngas. We analyze the effects of temperature and steam-to-carbon ratio on the products derived from coupling the pyrolysis of agricultural biomass waste to catalytic reforming. Increasing the temperature and steam-to-carbon ratio enhances hydrogen yield. A complete conversion of pyrolysis volatile products into syngas was obtained at 600 °C with steam-to-carbon ratio of 4 for pinewood biomass and nickel catalyst. The use of nickel catalyst supported on lanthana–alumina Ni/La2O3-αAl2O3 for the steam reforming of raw bio-oil produced from pine sawdust pyrolysis enhanced the yields of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, reaching 95% and 93%, respectively, at 700 °C and steam-to-carbon of 15.
