Abstract:Flood disasters profoundly impact school children in Kerala, particularly in Ernakulam, disrupting their lives, education, and emotional well-being. Despite the critical need for support, there is limited understanding of how these children cope with the psychosocial challenges posed by floods. This study aims to explore these coping mechanisms to inform effective mental health support and resilience-building programs in schools. Using a qualitative design with a case study approach, eight school children were purposively sampled. Data collection revealed four primary themes: regulating anxiety, the role of a multidisciplinary approach, the development of resilient behaviour, and rebuilding physical health. Regulating anxiety involves emotional regulation strategies, psychosocial support, and continuous mental health assessment, with family, peers, and professionals playing critical roles in providing support. A multidisciplinary approach, including integrated parental support, child-cantered methodologies, and capacity-building initiatives, is essential for effective adaptation, with educators, healthcare providers, and community leaders fostering a supportive environment. Resilient behaviour is exhibited through adaptability, a rebuilding spirit, and altruistic tendencies despite challenges, highlighting the need for targeted interventions for children showing post-traumatic behaviours. Rebuilding physical health addresses psychosomatic issues, general health challenges, and malnutrition, emphasizing the necessity of integrating physical health concerns with psychosocial interventions. Overall, the findings stress the importance of comprehensive, child-focused interventions that combine emotional, social, and physical health support to enhance the well-being of flood-affected children in Ernakulam.

Abstract:The current study was carried out to explore the coping strategies adopted by male flood survivors to overcome the damage and loss induced by floods in Punjab and Sindh provinces of Pakistan in the aftermath of 2022 floods. The study also sought to explore the strategies adopted by flood survivors to cope with emotional and psychological challenges posed by flood disaster. As bread earners, male flood survivors are confronted with a plethora of challenges that include but are not limited to, livelihood disruptions and economic instability from the destruction of agricultural land, livestock, and infrastructure. For evaluating coping methods adopted by male flood during disaster cycle viz preparedness, response and recovery, the current study was conducted by using qualitative research design. Data were collected from 48 male victims of floods in the south of Punjab, especially from Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajan Pur districts and from Qamber Shah Dad Kot and Dadu Districts of Sindh Province by conducting in depth interviews. Semi structured interview guide was used as a tool of data collection. Data were collected in native language of the participants which was later on translated into English. Activating social networks, providing financial assistance, and implementing practical measures like fish farming and flood-resistant crops were all identified as effective coping strategies.

Abstract:Objectives: The study aimed to explore the association between resilience, posttraumatic growth, and coping strategies among cancer patients. Moreover, the study also investigates the mediating role of coping strategies in the link between resilience and posttraumatic growth. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted on a sample of 150 individuals who completed questionnaires, including the brief resilience scale, posttraumatic growth inventory, and brief cope. Result: The study revealed a positive relationship between resilience, Posttraumatic Growth (PTG), and coping strategies. Moreover, findings show that resilience is not predictive of higher Posttraumatic Growth (PTG). Conclusion: Posttraumatic growth is 23% mediated by emotion-focused coping strategies and patients have a tendency to use avoidance coping strategies which leads lower healthy growth.

Abstract:This study examined the co-occurring patterns of post-traumatic stress disorder and depression. A sample of 187 victims completed self-report questionnaires after a major flood disaster. Results indicated four classes: low symptoms group (49.7%), mild comorbid symptoms group (24.1%), serious comorbid symptoms group (3.2%), and medium comorbid symptoms group (23.0%). Male victims were less likely and older victims were more likely to belong to the medium comorbid symptoms group; victims with more serious trauma exposure and those using more maladaptive cognition emotional regulation strategies were more likely to belong to both the mild and medium comorbid symptoms groups.

Abstract:Social cognitive theory provides a framework of human agency during environmental challenges, with coping self-efficacy (CSE) as an important construct underlying adaptation. We examined two alternative models involving CSE as a mediator of the association between posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and communal coping among parent-youth dyads after severe floods using Bayesian dyadic multilevel modeling. The first model included PTSS as the independent variable and communal coping as the dependent variable (disaster distress model). The independent and dependent variables were replaced for each other in the second model (communal coping model). We used data from 485 parent-youth dyads who experienced floods between 2015 and 2016 in Texas, USA. Parents of children (69% women) aged 10–19 years old, and their oldest child (53% male; Mean age = 13.75) in that age range were recruited. We assessed PTSS, CSE, and communal coping for parents and youths. Results favored the disaster distress model over the communal coping model. In the disaster distress model, results demonstrated that CSE declines as PTSS increases, predicting decreased communal coping. This mediation effect of CSE is stronger for youths compared to parents, indicating that children's CSE is affected more by PTSS.

Abstract:A total of 187 flood victims from Wuhu, a Chinese city affected most severely by a flood during July 2016, were selected to complete self-report measures of traumatic exposure, feelings of safety, fear, posttraumatic negative cognition, and posttraumatic stress disorder. The results found that traumatic exposure could directly predict posttraumatic stress disorder. Besides, traumatic exposure had indirect prediction on posttraumatic stress disorder through three ways, including a one-step path of negative self-cognition, a two-step path from feelings of safety to fear, and a three-step path from feelings of safety to negative self-cognition via fear. Implications and future directions are correspondingly discussed.

Abstract:Assessment of coping strategies of crime victims is an integral function of the ensuing well-being for those victims. This study examines the relationship between coping strategies and levels of distress, social support, and subjective well-being among victims of crime. Interviews were conducted with 175 crime victims. Findings indicate a complex relationship between and among variables. A positive relationship was found between emotion-focused coping and well-being. Additionally, an inverse relationship between avoidance-oriented coping and well-being, social support, and levels of distress was found.

Abstract:Abstract Purpose Secondary traumatization and post-traumatic growth have been recognized as psychological reactions that might occur among the medical staff in general, and among nurses in particular. Nurses in the field of medical rehabilitative care might reveal such reactions as their work involves stress and traumatic situations. Coping strategies might either alleviate or exacerbate work-related stress experienced by nurses. The aims of the current study were to explore the link between secondary traumatization and post-traumatic growth exhibited by nurses in the field of medical rehabilitative care, and to examine the link between problem-focused coping strategies and emotion-focused coping strategies to secondary traumatization and post-traumatic growth. Material and method One hundred and fifty-three rehabilitative nurses completed self-report questionnaires regarding personal data, post-traumatic growth, secondary traumatization, ways of coping strategies and personal negative life events. Results Correlation matrix for the path analysis model revealed positive significant correlation between secondary traumatization and post-traumatic growth. Both, problem-focused coping and emotion-focused coping strategies were linked to secondary traumatization and post-traumatic growth. Conclusions Nurses employed in a medical rehabilitation hospital who cope via problem-focused strategies as well as emotion-focused strategies in their work, might reveal secondary traumatization but might simultaneously benefit from post-traumatic growth.

Community-based screening for post-traumatic stress disorder among flood victims - A cross-sectional study from Kerala, India

Abstract:Background: Natural disasters like floods have various physical and psychological effects on victims. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a condition that arises as a delayed reaction to extraordinarily threatening or catastrophic situations. Aim: The objective was to screen for PTSD and associated factors among victims residing in the flood-affected areas of Kerala, India. Methodology: A community-based screening for PTSD was done among 600 flood victims residing in three selected districts (Pathanamthitta, Alleppey, and Kottayam) of Kerala. A trauma screening questionnaire was used to screen for PTSD. Results: More than 90% of them had to stay in relief camps during floods. More than 80% had damage to houses, followed by loss of domestic animals and vehicle damage. Among participants, 298 (49.7%) screened positive for PTSD 3 months post disaster. No previous history of flooding, odds ratio (OR) = 8.6 [confidence interval (CI) 5.7-13.1]; younger age, OR = 1.41 (CI 1-1.9); higher family income, OR = 4.2 (CI 2.5-6.8); education, OR = 1.4 (CI 1-2.1); flood-related morbidity, OR = 8.8 (CI 5.3-14.8); and death of a family member, OR = 3.4 (CI 1.2-9.3), were the factors that were found to be significantly associated with stress among respondents. Conclusion: Almost 50% of flood victims were screened positive for PTSD. This study's findings reiterate the need to provide psychological support as a priority along with other disaster control measures.
Flood proneness and coping strategies: the experiences of two villages in Bangladesh

Abstract:This paper explores peoples' indigenous survival strategies and assesses variations in people's ability to cope with floods in two flood-prone villages in Bangladesh. It reveals that people continuously battle against flood vulnerability in accordance with their level of exposure and abilities, with varied strategies employed at different geophysical locations. The paper reports that people in an area with low flooding and with better socioeconomic circumstances are more likely to cope with impacts compared to people in areas with high and sudden flooding. Similarly, households' ability to cope varies depending on people's socioeconomic conditions, such as education, income and occupation. Although floods in Bangladesh generate socioeconomic misery and cause damage to the environment, health and infrastructure, people's indigenous coping strategies have helped them to reduce significantly their vulnerability. Such flood-mitigating strategies should be well recognised and emphasised further via proper dissemination of information through an early-warning system and subsequently external assistance.
The Roles of Needs Satisfaction, Cognitive Appraisals, and Coping Strategies in Promoting Posttraumatic Growth: A Stress and Coping Perspective.

Abstract:Objective: There is growing interest in understanding people's positive changes after their negative life experiences. Previous studies have shown that coping resources, cognitive appraisal, and coping strategies are associated with posttraumatic growth (PTG). This study aimed to extend previous findings by applying the stress and coping model and the self-determination theory to further understand the psychological factors (including basic psychological needs satisfaction and coping variables) that promote PTG. Method: An ethnically diverse sample of 454 college students participated in an online survey. A hierarchical regression was conducted to examine the associations among the coping variables and PTG. Results: After we controlled for gender, number of types of traumatic events, and the level of current distress due to the most traumatic event, results from a hierarchical regression analysis revealed that satisfaction of relatedness need, challenge appraisal, emotional expression, acceptance, and positive reframing were associated with higher PTG. Conclusions: Our findings support the facilitating role of these factors in promoting PTG. Interventions that help people to reevaluate the impact of the negative events, improve people's skills in using appropriate cognitive and emotional coping strategies, and facilitate supportive environment for psychological needs satisfaction may increase people's PTG.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Depression is one of the most common post-trauma symptoms that can be alleivated by social support. The purpose of this study was to examine the multiple mediating effects of social support on depression via feelings of safety, disclosure, and negative cognition.METHOD:One hundred and eighty-seven flood victims in Wuhu City, an area affected most severely by a flood during July 2016, were selected to complete a self-report questionnaire package.RESULTS:Social support has four indirect negative effects on depression, including a one-step indirect path to self-disclosure, 2 two-step paths from feelings of safety to self-disclosure, and from self-disclosure to negative cognition about self, and a three-step indirect path from feelings of life safety via self-disclosure to negative self-cognition.LIMITATIONS:All variables were measured using self-report scales.CONCLUSION:Social support may relieve depression in flood victims by inducing feelings of safety and self-disclosure, and by relieving negative cognition.

Abstract:Background/Objective: In addition to negative psychological reactions, individuals who experienced traumatic events may also show positive psychological and behavioral changes. This study examined the relationships between social support, belief in a just world (BJW), empathy, posttraumatic growth (PTG), and prosocial behaviors to clarify whether PTG and prosocial behaviors had shared or unique underlying mechanisms. Method: We used a self-reported questionnaire to investigate 920 adolescents that experienced a catastrophic flood in Henan Province, China, in July 2021. Structured equation modeling was used for the data analysis. Results: After controlling for trauma exposure, social support was directly related to both PTG and prosocial behaviors. Social support was also indirectly related to both PTG and prosocial behaviors via BJW. Moreover, social support was indirectly associated with prosocial behavior via empathy and via the path from BJW to empathy. Conclusions: These findings indicate that BJW and empathy play different roles in the relationships between social support and PTG and prosocial behavior, and suggest these relationships have unique mechanisms.

Abstract:ObjectiveThe current longitudinal study aims to examine the bidirectional relationship between post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and post-traumatic growth (PTG).MethodOne hundred twenty-two adults in the most severely affected area were investigated by self-report questionnaires at 12 months and 18 months after the Wenchuan Earthquake occurred in China.ResultsThe autoregressive cross-lagged structure equation analysis revealed that PTG at 12 months post-earthquake could negatively predict PTSS at 18 months post-earthquake above and beyond PTSS stability, whereas PTSS at 12 months post-earthquake could not significantly predict subsequent PTG. Moreover, PTG at 12 months post-earthquake could predict fewer subsequent intrusions, numbing and hyper-arousal symptoms but not avoidance symptoms.ConclusionGrowth can play a role in reducing long-term post-traumatic stress symptoms, and the implication of a positive perspective in post-trauma circumstance is discussed.

Abstract:Background: Coping strategies are frequently used among individuals with physical disabilities when they face adversities. Low- and middle-income countries are not investigated coping styles among psychological distress persons with disabilities despite the high prevalence of psychological distress. The aim of this study was to identify coping strategies among people with physical disabilities for their psychological distress in Ethiopia has a crucial role to improve the health status of persons with physical disabilities. Methods: An institution-based cross-sectional study was employed among individuals living with physical disabilities at the University of Gondar staff and students from May to June 2021. All staff and students with physical disabilities were screened for psychological distress (n = 269). The census sampling technique was used to select the study participants for psychological distress. The Brief Cope with Problems Experienced (COPE-28) was used to assess coping strategies. Bivariate and multivariate linear regression analyses were used to identify factors associated with coping strategies. An odd ratio (OR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) at P < 0.05 was computed to assess the strength of the association. Results: The emotional-focused coping strategy was the most frequently used when dealing with psychological distress among participants with physical disabilities. The most commonly used emotional-focused coping strategy was spirituality. In the multivariate analyses; urban residence (β = 3.05, 95% CI: 0.98, 5.12), and stigma (β = 3.10, 95% CI: 0.61, 2.83) were factors positively associated with emotion-focused coping strategy, and World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHO QOL) (β = 0.18, 95% CI: 0.13, 0.22), and stigma (β = 1.11, 95% CI: 0.61, 2.83) were factors significantly associated with problem-focused coping. Urban residence (β= -0.96, 95% CI: -1.69, -0.22) was negatively associated with dysfunctional coping strategy, but WHO QOL (β = 0.35, 95% CI: 0.32, 0.38) was positively correlated with dysfunctional coping. Conclusion: In this study revealed that spirituality is the most frequently used coping strategy among the study participants. Urban residents, stigma, and WHO QOL significantly correlated with coping strategies among such patients. The Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, and other concerned organizations may find the present findings useful to strengthen the coping styles to minimize psychological distress among people with physical disabilities.
Coping strategies as a causal mediator of the effect of loss-related memory characteristics and negative loss-related appraisals on symptoms of PGD, PTSD and depression

Abstract:Background: Psychological models of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and prolonged grief disorder (PGD) make predictions about the role of unhelpful coping strategies in maintaining difficulties by blocking self-correction of negative appraisals and memory integration following stressful life events like bereavement. However, few studies have tested these predictions directly. Method: We used counterfactually based causal mediation to assess whether unhelpful coping strategies mediated the relationship between (1) loss-related memory characteristics and/or (2) negative grief-related appraisals and symptoms of PGD, PTSD and depression using a three-wave longitudinal sample (N = 275). Appraisals and memory characteristics were measured at time point 1, unhelpful coping strategies at T2, and symptom variables at T3. Additionally, multiple mediation analyses within a structural equation modelling (SEM) framework assessed which types of coping strategies differentially mediated symptoms of PGD, PTSD and depression. Results: Coping strategies mediated the relationship between negative appraisals and memory characteristics and symptoms of PGD, PTSD and depression after adjusting for demographics and loss characteristics. Sensitivity analyses suggested that these results were most robust for PGD, followed by PTSD and then depression. Multiple mediation analyses suggested that all four subscales (avoidance, proximity seeking, loss rumination and injustice rumination) individually mediated the effect of memory characteristics and appraisals on PGD. Conclusions: These results suggest that core predictions of the cognitive model for PTSD and the cognitive behavioural model of PGD are useful in predicting symptoms of post-loss mental health problems in the first 12-18 months after loss. Targeting unhelpful coping strategies is likely to reduce symptoms of PGD, PTSD and depression.

Abstract:Floods, which are frequent in France, can trigger a range of psychiatric problems. The most common is post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Although personality traits and cognitive emotion regulation strategies have already been shown to play a role in PTSD, the influence of these two dimensions and their interactions has seldom been explored among flood victims. We therefore set out to fill this lacuna, by PTSD symptoms, personality traits and cognitive emotion regulation strategies in 67 adults whose homes had been flooded. Results showed that the more participants used catastrophizing and rumination strategies, and the less they used putting into perspective and positive reappraisal strategies, the higher their PTSD symptom scores. High levels of neuroticism and catastrophizing were major risk factors for PTSD. Results also showed that putting into perspective moderated the influence of neuroticism as a risk factor. In conclusion, we recommend that flood victims showing signs of PTSD, especially those with elevated neuroticism, be offered therapeutic interventions designed foster the development of adaptive emotion regulation strategies such as putting into perspective and positive reappraisal.

Change in emotional distress, anxiety, depression and PTSD from pre- to post-flood exposure in women residing in low-income settings in South Africa

Abstract:Floods are increasing in frequency and may increase the risk for experiencing emotional distress, anxiety, depression and PTSD. The aim of this study was to determine the extent of damage, loss, injury and death resulting from floods that occurred in and around the city of Durban, South Africa, in April 2022, and associated changes in mental health pre- to post-floods in a low-income setting. Seventy-three women between the ages of 18 and 45, residing in flood affected, low-income settings, were interviewed prior to the floods occurring. Mental health measures were repeated with 69 of the 73 women during the post-flood interview along with a questionnaire measuring flood-related exposures. Loss of infrastructure (lacked access to drinking water, electricity, fresh food, could not travel to work, had to stay in a shelter and could not get hold of friends or family) was a predictor of post-flood change in levels of emotional distress and anxiety. Higher levels of prior trauma exposure were associated with higher post-flood levels of emotional distress. Higher pre-flood food insecurity was also associated with higher post-flood anxiety. Women affected by poverty, food insecurity and a history of trauma are vulnerable to the additive adverse mental health effects of floods. Proactive approaches to diminishing the impact of floods on the livelihood of women is needed and post-flood relieve efforts may be more affective if they are enhanced by providing mental health support.

The study also presents an account on the linkages of various ex post coping strategies and flood damages experienced in a flood event in Pakistan. For achieving a uniform flood damage indicator, polychoric principle component analysis (PCA) is employed to construct a composite flood damage index considering various aspects of economic, social, and psychological impacts of a flood event. The adjusted flood damage index is regressed on various socioeconomic features and ex ante mitigation actions to know their effect on the former. Results indicate that distance from river, elevating house, and pre-shifting investigating about flooding problem help in significantly reducing the overall flood damages. Likewise, group-based actions like voting political candidates based on their flood-control promises, organizing grass-root group meetings, and raising voices through memos/petitions are found to significantly reduce flood-related damages while leaving house premises before flooding is found to increase the overall flood damage. Post-flood coping strategies comprise of social and financial support along with some livelihood diversification and disinvestment strategies such as selling livestock, jewelry, and withdrawing children from schools. Borrowing money, reducing food consumption, and agricultural diversification are more prevalent strategies among low and medium damage groups while consuming savings is more conspicuous among high damage group. The study concludes with the emphasis on policy interventions for effective early warning, location-specific flood intensity information, and proper streamlining of planning process and compensation system.

Abstract:Climate change and pollution have increased frequency of floods. According to statistics, floods are becoming more frequent and causing significant damage, especially to the victims. Subsequently, victims must develop greater resilience. The aim of this study is to determine the focus on flood victims dealing with flood disasters. As part of the inclusion criteria, six relevant government documents were reviewed, all related to flood resilience. Thematic analysis was conducted using ATLAS.ti software identifies five main themes such as resilience behavior, community sustainability, disaster management, strategic planning, and global security. Therefore, the government should develop innovative strategies, utilize the latest technologies, and promote international collaboration to improve flood resilience. Encouraging community sustainability can help flood victims develop resilience behaviors, which is important for creating a society that can withstand natural disasters.
