Abstract:Electrochemical investigations demonstrate that the nickel oxide (NiO) thin films exhibit superior oxygen reduction reaction activity across various electrolyte media. To produce nanostructured NiO, a sol-gel method was employed, followed by thin film fabrication through spin coating with varying numbers of depositions. The film's structure and morphology were confirmed by XRD and SEM, respectively, while AFM confirmed the deposition of a thin film with an appropriate thickness on the substrate. The electrochemical performance of the electrode was evaluated using cyclic voltammetry, revealing that a specific number of deposited NiO thin films exhibit superior performance compared to others. The superior electrocatalytic activity of nickel oxide is correlated with the various steps involved during the charge transfer in the OER mechanism. Optimization of the operating pH of the proposed electrodes was also carried out in this study. Additionally, these electrodes demonstrated a higher specific energy of 15.5 Wh kg−1 at a specific power of 151 W kg−1 proving their suitability as an electrode material for supercapacitors.

Abstract:A NiO nanoarchitecture with a chain-like structure material was synthesized using a CTAB-assisted sonochemical method and then applied as an electrode in supercapacitors. Spectral analysis like XRD, FTIR and SEM was used to characterize the crystalline nature, internal structure and morphological properties of NiO nanoarchitecture. At a scan rate of 5 mV s-1, the NiO material exhibits a pseudocapacitive charge storage mechanism and provides a specific capacitance of 562 with good rate capabilities. Moreover, the chain-like NiO material exhibits outstanding cycle stability, retaining 96% of the original capacitance after 3,000 cycles at a scan rate of 100 mV s-1. The high-performance, chain-like nanostructured NiO material is easy to make and is of great interest for improved energy storage devices.
Spray pyrolyzed thorn-like nanostructured nickel oxide electrodes for symmetric supercapacitor device

Abstract:Nickel oxide (NiO) is an appealing electrode for the supercapacitor consequent to its giant capacity, good cyclic stability, and economical feature. Here, we find the significant capacity elevation of nickel oxide thin film electrodes at 350 °C temperature during the variation of precursor concentration. XRD patterns of all electrodes show a face-centered cubic crystal structure. The prepared NiO electrodes are specified by utilizing different characterization techniques, i.e., wettability study, FESEM, TEM, and XPS. It is found that the concentration of the precursor performs a prominent role in increasing the specific capacitance of the electrode. As concentration increases, the specific capacitance increases till a certain value of concentration and then decreases accordingly. The highest value of the specific capacitance is 838.14 Fg −1 at a scan rate of 0.002 Vs −1 obtained for the 0.6 M (NC-3) electrode. The optimized electrode shows 82% retention even after 5000 cyclic voltammetric cycles. The optimized electrodes' specific power and specific energy at 0.001 Acm −2 are 400.00 Whkg −1 and 9.41 kwkg −1 , respectively. Electrochemical characterizations of the fabricated NiO symmetric device are also studied.

Abstract:This research work concerns with the magnetic and electrochemical characteristics of hydrothermally prepared nickel oxide (NiO) nanoparticles for their use as working electrode material in supercapacitor. Through the use of thermal gravimetric (TG-DTA), the thermal stability and heat adsorption/desorption characteristics of the as-produced NiO nanoparticles were examined. By using X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique at ambient, 600 °C and 800 °C annealing temperatures, the trigonal and cubic structure of the as prepared and annealed nanoparticles was discovered. The spherical and cubic morphology of the as synthesized and annealed (800 °C) NiO nanoparticles was confirmed through field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDAX) analysis. The functional groups, optical bandgap energy, surface chemistry, specific surface area and superparamagnetic behavior of the annealed (800 °C) NiO nanoparticles were determined through Fourier transform infra-red (FT-IR), UV-DRS, XPS, BET and VSM characterization approaches, respectively. At the lowest scan rates of 10 mVs −1 and 0.5 Ag −1 , the pseudocapacitive behavior was noticed utilizing CV and GCD analyses. An excellent electrical conductivity for the supercapacitor application was also shown by the Nyquist plot of the produced NiO electrode.

Abstract:This work reports, the growth of nanobelts-like Ni(OH)2 on three-dimensional conductive nickel foam by using a simply modified chemical bath deposition method which was used as binder-free battery-type electrode for high-performance supercapacitor. The synthesised battery-type electrode Ni(OH)2/Ni tested as an electrode for supercapacitor which exhibited superior electrochemical performance. The maximum specific capacitance of 187.46 mAhg−1 demonstrated by Ni(OH)2/Ni at a scan rate of 10 mVs−1 and 50.29 mAhg−1 at 100 mVs−1 along with 96% capacitance retention after 2000 cycles. The obtained excellent electrochemical performance is due to materials unique nanostructure where thin nanosheets build the nanobelt-like structure.

Abstract:<p class="Para">A hybrid nanostructure comprising nickel oxide nanoparticles and carbon nanospheres (NiO/CNSs), synthesized via wet chemical process is demonstrated as high-performance electrochemical supercapacitors. The resulting structure exposes that NiO/CNSs electrode possesses irregularly shaped nanoparticles. The NiO/CNSs hybrid nanostructure gives a smaller contact angle of 7° for 6 M KOH electrolyte solution revealing better surface wettability, which enhances the transportation of electrolytic ions into the surface of the electrode material. Furthermore, oscillator strength of Raman active modes confirms the presence of disorder and lower degree of graphitization, which play an important role to improve the electrochemical performance. The NiO/CNSs electrode exhibits a high-specific capacitance of 1380 F g<sup>−1</sup> at a current density of 4 A g<sup>−1</sup> and long cycle life with 97% charge retention after 1000 cycles. Abstract:The metal oxides based various nanostructures are believed to be a promising candidate for the development of high-performance electrochemical energy storage devices. Nickel oxide (NiO) based nanostructures such as nanoplate, nanoflower, nanorod, and nanosheet have been successfully synthesized by facile, solution-based hydrothermal method. The electrochemical performances of different NiOs nanostructures have been investigated using cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. When NiOs are used as an electrode in a three-electrode system, the maximum achieved specific capacity values are 355 C g-1, 294 C g-1, 284 C g-1, and 432 C g-1 at 1 A g-1 for NiO nanoplate, nanoflower, nanorod, and nanosheet respectively. The solid-state asymmetric supercapacitor device (NiO//AC) has been fabricated using a NiO nanosheet as an anode and activated carbon derived from sunflower seed (AC) as a cathode. The Asymmetric supercapacitor NiO//AC device exhibits a specific capacity of 83 C g-1 at a current density of 1 A g-1. In addition, NiO//AC delivers a maximum energy density of 39.49 Wh Kg-1 at a power density of 1.7 kW Kg-1 and a retention of 107.9 % is observed at 10000 charge/discharge cycles.

Electrochemical Performance of Nickel Oxide/Koh/Active Carbon Super-Capacitor

Abstract:The fabrication and characterization of new type Nickel oxide/KOH/Active carbon super-capacitor have been described. Porous nickel oxide was prepared by hydrolysis of nickel acetate and heated in air at 300 degreesC. The resulting nickel oxide behaved as an electrochemical capacitor electrode with a specific capacitance (50-70 F/g) superior to most active carbon electrodes. This kind of nickel oxide maintained high utilization at high rate of discharge (i.e., high power density) and had excellent cycle life more than 1000 times, while the capacitance of-the cell composed of two identical nickel oxide electrodes was poor at high discharge current density and the maximum-operational voltage of this type capacitor was limited to 0.5 V. A new type super-capacitor was designed in which the nickel oxide and the active carbon were applied to the positive and negative electrodes respectively. The breakdown voltage of this type super-capacitor was improved effectively to 0.8 V and excellent characteristic of high power discharge was attained in this way. The Nickel woxide/KOH/Active carbon super-capacitor has promising potentials in portable telecommunications, uninterruptable power supplies and battery load leveling applications.

Abstract:Supercapacitors' effective short-term power delivery has garnered a lot of attention; however, they face challenges in terms of stability and capacity. Promising possibilities for enhancing supercapacitor performance are nanocomposites with reduced ion/electron diffusion routes and increased specific surface areas. Hence, this study focused on the fabrication and electrochemical performance of supercapacitor electrodes made of NiO@TiO 2 nanocomposites, addressing a gap in the literature on NiO nanoparticles (NiO NPs) loaded with TiO 2 nanofibers. The presence of Ni 2+ , Ni 3+ , and -OH functional groups was detected using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and the elements presence was reiterated by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in addition to transmission electron microscopy (TEM) elucidated the morphological concepts, demonstrating width as 72 nm for NiO NPs and the length of the TiO 2 nanofibers ranging between 300 and 500 nm. An exceptional specific capacitance of 750 F·g −1 @3 A·g −1 was demonstrated by NiO@TiO 2 electrodes, with reasonable cyclic reliability (94.6 %@15 A·g −1 ) post 10,000 galvanostatic charge–discharge (GCD) cycles. At 1.9 A·g −1 current density, NiO@TiO 2 – two electrode arrangement generated a significant amount of energy density, 54.29 Wh·kg −1 @ 4446 W·kg −1 power density along with a competent cyclic stability post 10,000 cycles. We also employed a self-analyzed monolayer (SAM) approach to assess cyclic voltammetric (CV) response by utilizing a coupled simulation of the Butler–Volmer and Nernst–Planck–Poisson (N-P-P) models through finite element modeling in COMSOL. The results obtained suggest that NiO@TiO 2 electrodes have excellent electrochemical traits indicating that they are commendable nanocomponents for applications involving advanced energy storage.

Abstract:The escalating demand for high-quality energy storage devices has become a paramount concern in the contemporary scenario. Despite the potential of supercapacitors for high-quality energy storage, developing sustainable and improved electrode materials remains a challenge. This work investigates the synthesis and characterization of a novel optimally lanthanum-doped nickel cobalt ferrite, for its potential application in supercapacitors. The synthesized nano ferrite is utilized in a two-electrode system as a symmetrical supercapacitor device. The obtained morphological and electrochemical results of both two and three-electrode systems confirm their suitability for effective deployment in supercapacitor electrodes. A high specific capacitance of 706 F/g and energy density of 152.9 Wh/g is obtained for the fabricated device with a retention capacity of 86 % even after 10,000 cycles. The electrochemical results are also validated using an electrical method. The exploration of this lanthanum-doped nano ferrite is expected to be a suitable candidate for the fabrication of supercapacitor electrodes for augmented energy storage performance.

Abstract:Mesoporous nickel oxide has been synthesized by calcining metal-organic coordination precursor.Transmission electron microscopy and BET test showed that the prepared NiO had a regular morphology and displayed a narrow size distribution.Electrochemical tests revealed that such mesoporous NiO had a specific capacity of 72 F·g-1 at the current of 2.0 A·g-1.Futhermore,the material showed excellent cycle-life stability.There was no degradation of capacitance after 1000 cycles.

Additionally, the stability of the constructed supercapacitor device was examined over 5000 consecutive cycles, verifying a 92% stability through charge-discharge cycles. Finally, the fabricated supercapacitor was utilized to power an LED lamp, successfully maintaining the illumination for 53 seconds.

Binder-Free Nickel Oxide Lamellar Layer Anchored CoOx Nanoparticles on Nickel Foam for Supercapacitor Electrodes

Abstract:To enhance the connection of electroactive materials/current collector and accelerate the transport efficiency of the electrons, a binder-free electrode composed of nickel oxide anchored CoOx nanoparticles on modified commercial nickel foam (NF) was developed. The nickel oxide layer with lamellar structure which supplied skeleton to load CoOx electroactive materials directly grew on the NF surface, leading to a tight connection between the current collector and electroactive materials. The fabricated electrode exhibits a specific capacitance of 475 F/g at 1 mA/cm2. A high capacitance retention of 96% after 3000 cycles is achieved, attributed to the binding improvement at the current collector/electroactive materials interface. Moreover, an asymmetric supercapacitor with an operating voltage window of 1.4 V was assembled using oxidized NF anchored with cobalt oxide as the cathode and activated stainless steel wire mesh as the anode. The device achieves a maximum energy density of 2.43 Wh/kg and power density of 0.18 kW/kg, respectively. The modified NF substrate conducted by a facile and effective electrolysis process, which also could be applied to deposit other electroactive materials for the energy storage devices.

Abstract:Nickel copper cobalt oxide (NiCuCoO) ternary metal oxide nanoparticles were synthesized by employing the hydrothermal method. NiCuCoO electrode demonstrates a specified capacity of 596 C g −1 at 1 A g −1 , high capacitance retaining of 99% even if 1000 sequences at the density of current 10 A g −1 , and significant extended cyclic strength over 1000 sequences. The gathered asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) tool via NiCuCoO as the cathode and activated carbon as anode materials achieve a specified capacity of 168 C g −1 at a current density of 1 Ag −1 , an excellent capacity retaining of 95% even later than 5000 sequences at a density of current 10 A g −1 . The fabricated device exhibits a high density of energy and power is 96 Wh kg −1 and 841 W kg −1 . The prepared material confirms an excellent capacitance routine, so this work represents for a next-generation energy storage device.

Abstract:<span class="a-plus-plus abstract-section id-a-sec1"><p class="a-plus-plus">Supercapacitors are favorable energy storage devices in the field of emerging energy technologies with high power density, excellent cycle stability and environmental benignity. The performance of supercapacitors is definitively influenced by the electrode materials. Nickel sulfides have attracted extensive interest in recent years due to their specific merits for supercapacitor application. However, the distribution of electrochemically active sites critically limits their electrochemical performance. Notable improvements have been achieved through various strategies such as building synergetic structures with conductive substrates, enhancing the active sites by nanocrystallization and constructing nanohybrid architecture with other electrode materials. This article overviews the progress in the reasonable design and preparation of nickel sulfides and their composite electrodes combined with various bifunctional electric double-layer capacitor (EDLC)-based substances (e.g., graphene, hollow carbon) and pseudocapacitive materials (e.g., transition-metal oxides, sulfides, nitrides). Abstract:Transition metal oxides/hydroxides have received a lot of attention due to their perfect capacitive performance, low cost, and environmentally benign nature in supercapacitor applications. Among them, nickel hydroxide (Ni(OH) 2 ) has been widely selected for studies because of its stimulating feature of ultrahigh theoretical capacitance. However, the low conductivity and inadequate rate capability impede its wide-scale use which is overcome by incorporating Ni(OH) 2 with polymers, metal oxides, and carbonaceous substances to create binary nanocomposite materials. However, there are some issues that hinder its commercialization and the state of progress is still far from being feasible. Hence, it is observed from the literature that the integration of the above mentioned three components by properly optimizing the percentage of each component in the composite such as mass loading and selection of an appropriate electrolyte leads to enhanced electrochemical performance. Further, it is observed that asymmetric supercapacitors perform better than symmetric ones because employability of two different electrode materials widened the potential window which also provides a workaround for the symmetric supercapacitor's energy storage constraints. In the present review, progressive updates on Ni(OH) 2 based materials are explored which includes a brief on synthesis, material characteristics, and supercapacitor outcomes. Further, critical issues and potential solutions along with suggestions have also been discussed for how this set of resources might develop in the future for asymmetric supercapacitor devices.

Abstract:In this research, nickel-zinc (Ni 0.5 Zn 0.5 Fe 2 O 4 ) nanoparticles of ferrite are tested to see whether they can function as electrodes in supercapacitors. The synthesized nanoparticles have been found to have a single-phase face-centered cubic structure, according to structural, morphological, and compositional analyses. The nanoparticles are confirmed to be in their typical structure since Fourier transform infrared examination shows that they contain no organic components. Analyses of the material's surface and magnetic properties suggest that it has superparamagnetic properties and a particular surface area of 42.26 m 2 g −1 , both of which are essential for improving energy storage efficiency. Reversible and steady redox behavior may be shown in cyclic voltammetry investigations as confirmed from the well-developed curve. Rapid charge–discharge response, potential plateaus, with overall stability indicate that these nanoparticles are well-suited for high-rate applications. The effect of the applied current density upon charge storage capacity is highlighted by a specific capacitance study showing an inverse connection between current density with capacitance. Analyzing the impedance and the Nyquist plot may provide light on the kinetics of charge transfer and the capacitive behavior. These results show that nickel-zinc ferrite nanoparticles may function well as supercapacitor electrodes. For the sake of designing and optimizing supercapacitors to satisfy future energy needs, this work adds to our knowledge of their electrochemical characteristics and energy storage capacity.

Abstract:As promising electrode materials for electrochemical supercapacitors, pseudocapacitive transition metal oxides such as NiO possess high theoretical specific capacitance, environmental benignity and good abundance. However their areal capacitance and cycling stability are greatly restricted by their poor electronic conductivity (NiO, 10(-2) to 10(-3) S cm(-1)). Here we propose an in situ growth strategy in combination with nanoscale design to construct ultrathin mesoporous NiO nanosheets on a 3D network of nickel foam. The hybrid structures show well enhanced conductivity and ion transfer, giving rise to an ultrahigh specific capacitance of 2504.3 F g(-1) which is close to the theoretical value of NiO. The electrodes also exhibit remarkable cycling stability (no degradation of the overall capacitance after 45 000 cycles). The amazing electrochemical performance of such hybrid structures makes them potential electrodes in supercapacitors. The present strategy could be popularized in other transition metal oxides like Co3O4, MnO2, etc. to create electrodes with desirable nanostructures.
Synthesis of NiCo2S4-based nanostructured electrodes supported on nickel foams with superior electrochemical performance

Abstract:NiCo2S4-based nanostructured films have been grown directly onto nickel foams by a facile two-step method, involving the growth of NiCo-precursor and subsequent conversion into NiCo2S4 via a sulfidation process, with the aid of sodium dodecyl surfactant (SDS). This synthesis method enables the fabrication of binder- and conductive additive-free electrodes for supercapacitors. The influence of the surfactant on the crystal structure, morphology, and electrochemical performance of the electrodes has been investigated. The NiCo2S4-SDS films exhibit a complex cellular and hierarchical porous structure, which are different from NiCo2S4-pure films with nanotube arrays structure. Moreover, the electrochemical tests show that the NiCo2S4-SDS nanostructured electrode exhibits an ultrahigh specific capacitance of 2519 F g−1 at 0.5 A g−1, which doubles that of the NiCo2S4-pure nanotube arrays electrode. In addition, the NiCo2S4-SDS electrode exhibits excellent cycling stability with 90.7 % capacitance retention at 10 A g−1 after 8000 cycles. In view of the low cost and superior electrochemical performance, the NiCo2S4-SDS electrodes are promising electrode materials for high-performance supercapacitors.
