Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as a new platform for the construction of various functional materials for energy related applications. Here, a facile MOF templating method is developed to fabricate a hierarchical nickel-cobalt sulfide nanosheet array on conductive Ni foam (Ni-Co-S/NF) as a binder-free electrode for supercapacitors. A uniform 2D Co-MOF nanowall array is first grown in situ on Ni foam in aqueous solution at room temperature, and then the Co-MOF nanowalls are converted into hierarchical Ni-Co-S nanoarchitectures via an etching and ion-exchange reaction with Ni(NO3)(2), and a subsequent solvothermal sulfurization. Taking advantage of the compositional and structural merits of the hierarchical Ni-Co-S nanosheet array and conductive Ni foam, such as fast electron transportation, short ion diffusion path, abundant active sites and rich redox reactions, the obtained Ni-Co-S/NF electrode exhibits excellent electrochemical capacitive performance (1406.9 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1), 53.9% retention at 10 A g(-1) and 88.6% retention over 1000 cycles), which is superior to control CoS/NF. An asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) assembled by using the as-fabricated Ni-Co-S/NF as the positive electrode and activated carbon (AC) as the negative electrode delivers a high energy density of 24.8 W h kg(-1) at a high power density of 849.5 W kg(-1). Even when the power density is as high as 8.5 kW kg(-1), the ASC still exhibits a high energy density of 12.5 W h kg(-1). This facile synthetic strategy can also be extended to fabricate other hierarchical integrated electrodes for high-efficiency electrochemical energy conversion and storage devices.

Abstract:Co3O4@CoNi-layered double hydroxide (LDH) core/shell nanosheet array on Ni foam was prepared as an integrated battery-type electrode for supercapacitors by growth of CoNi-LDH nanosheets shell on the surface of Co3O4 plates core. The resulting composite material exhibits high specific capacitance (2676.9 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1)) and excellent cycling stability. The improved electrochemical behavior is benefited from the typical mesoporous structure, which shorten the diffusion distance of OH-in the electrolyte and the strong core/shell binding interaction among Co3O4 and CoNi-LDH nanosheet arrays. Additionally, an assembled asymmetric supercapacitor (ASCs) device using as-fabricated Co3O4@CoNi-LDH as positive electrode and activated carbon (AC) as negative electrode also exhibits a high energy density of 61.23 Wh kg(-1) at a high power density of 750 W kg(-1), furthermore, still remains 24.8 Wh kg(-1) even at a higher power density of 7500 W kg(-1). Most importantly, a red light-emitting diode (LED) can be illuminated by two connected ASCs, indicating that assynthesized Co3O4@ CoNi-LDH possesses great potential for practical applications. As a result, this work demonstrates a feasible strategy for the design and fabrication of metal oxides/LDH composites for applications in energy storage systems.

Abstract:Porous nanosheet-structured electrode materials are very attractive for the high efficiency storage of electrochemical energy. Herein, a porous cobalt sulfide nanosheet array on Ni foam (Co9S8-NSA/NF) is successfully fabricated by a facile method, which involves the uniform growth of 2D Co-based leaf-like zeolitic imidazole frameworks (Co-ZIF-L) on Ni foam followed by subsequent sulfurization with thioacetamide (TAA). Benefiting from the unique porous nanosheet array architecture and conductive substrate, the Co9S8-NSA/NF exhibits excellent electrochemical performance with a high capacitance (1098.8 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1)), good rate capacity (54.6% retention at 10 A g(-1)) and long-term stability (87.4% retention over 1000 cycles), when acted as a binder-free electrode for supercapacitors. Furthermore, an assembled asymmetric supercapacitor device using the as-fabricated Co9S8-NSA as the positive electrode and activated carbon (AC) as the negative electrode also exhibits a high energy density of 20.0 W h kg(-1) at a high power density of 828.5 W kg(-1). The method developed here can be extended to the construction of other structured metal (mono or mixed) sulfide electrode materials for more efficient energy storage.
A Zinc Cobalt Sulfide Nanosheet Array Derived from a 2D Bimetallic Metal-Organic Frameworks for High-Performance Supercapacitors

Abstract:Porous ternary metal sulfide integrated electrode materials with abundant electroactive sites and redox reactions are very promising for supercapacitors. Herein, a porous zinc cobalt sulfide nanosheet array on Ni foam (Zn-Co-S/NF) was constructed by facile growth of 2D bimetallic zinc/cobalt-based metal-organic framework (Zn/Co-MOF) nanosheets with leaf-like morphology on NF, followed by additional sulfurization. The Zn-Co-S/NF nanosheet array acted directly as a supercapacitor electrode showing much better electrochemical performance (2354.3 Fg(-1) and 88.6% retention over 1000 cycles) when compared with zinc cobalt sulfide powder (355.3 Fg(-1) and 75.8% retention over 1000 cycles), which originates from good electrical conductivity and mechanical stability, abundant electroactive sites, and facilitated transportation of electrons and electrolyte ions due to the unique nanosheet array structure. An asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) device assembled from Zn-Co-S/NF and activated carbon electrodes can deliver a highest energy density of 31.9 Whkg(-1) and a maximum power density of 8.5 kWkg(-1). Most importantly, this ASC also shows good cycling stability (71.0% retention over 10000 cycles). Furthermore, a red LED can be powered by two connected ASCs, and thus as-synthesized Zn-Co-S/NF has great potential for practical applications.

Abstract:Abundant electroactive sites, good electrical conductivity and rich channels are essential for high-performance pseudocapacitive materials, but their realization at the same time is still a great challenge. In this study, we prepare a few atoms thick and mesoporous nickel-cobalt (Ni-Co) oxides nanosheets for supercapacitors. The Ni-Co oxides have been synthesized via combining hydrothermal method with subsequent annealing treatment, which is very robust for the Ni-Co oxides with tuneable compositions and structures. The ultrathin and mesoporous nanosheets give rise to ultrahigh atom ratio at surface for high electroactive sites and abundant channels. In addition, by controlling the Ni to Co ratio and further supported on Ni foam, the electrochemical activity can be further promoted. As a result, the Ni0.5Co0.5O shows much higher specific capacitance values of 761 and 1616 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1) for powder sample and its arrays on foam, which are both gradually increasing with repeated cycling. When used to assemble asymmetric supercapacitor, the two-electrode system shows a high energy density of 34.6 Wh kg(-1) at 750 W kg(-1), attractive power performance of 22.5 kW kg(-1) at 21.5 Wh kg(-1) with ultralong cycling stability (87% of capacitance retention after 10000 cycles). Abstract:The novel hierarchical Ni-Co sulfide nanosheet-nanotubes arrays were directly grown on Ni foam, as binder-free electrodes, have been successfully synthesized following a one-step facile hydrothermal method combined with a sulfide treatment. The initial value of the area capacitance achieved 2.28 F cm−2 at a current density of 1 mA cm−2. A high areal capacitance retention of 95.2% compared to activation-induced peak value is achieved after 3000 charge-discharge cycles, which is much better than counter Ni-Co oxide electrode (1.75 F cm−2 at 1 mA cm−2, 93.2% retention compared to activation induced peak value). The outstanding and excellent super capacitive performance is ascribed to ion-exchange reaction, which induces a flexible hollow nanotube feature and show higher conductivity, compared with Ni-Co oxide NWs. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and Electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) results confirmed that the synthesized electrode contains the lowest resistance at high, and at lower frequency, leading to easy penetration of electrolytes and fast transportation of electrons inside the electrode. In this proposed work, a one-step hydrothermal method has been followed, and provided for the sulfide-induced, with a noticeable electrochemical performance of nickel cobaltite compounds and supplying a promising route for high-performance supercapacitor electrodes.

Abstract:Transition-metal selenide electrodes have recently attracted increasing interest in supercapacitors resulting from their superior electrochemical performance, lower-cost, and environmental friendliness. Herein, we report a novel bimetallic Ni-Co selenide nanosheet/three-dimensional (3D) graphene/nickel foam binder-free electrode (NiCo2.1Se3.3 NSs/3D G/NF) prepared via chemical vapor deposition followed by a simple two-step hydrothermal process in this paper. The NiCo2.1Se3.3 NSs array vertically on 3D G/NF with a uniform and stable structure without using any chemical binders. This novel electrode is flexible, highly conductive, and exhibits an excellent specific capacitance of ∼742.4 F g-1 at 1 mA cm-2. Furthermore, with a 10-fold increase to 10 mA cm-2, it still retains 471.78 F g-1 and a high cycling stability of ∼83.8% of the initial retention after 1000 cycles at 10 mA cm-2, demonstrating that NiCo2.1Se3.3 NSs/3D G/NF binder-free electrode has potential for energy storage application in high-performance supercapacitor fields.

Abstract:As newly developed energy storage devices, high-performance supercapacitors are expected to have large energy densities and it is urgent to design and fabricate novel electrode materials with high capacity and good stability. Core-shell structured hybrid films of Co3O4@NiCo2O4 nanowires were deposited on nickel foam as current collector in this work, different from previously reported assembly manner. The pre-formed NiCo2O4 nanowires on nickel foam as core can serves as conducive paths for the shell material of Co3O4 nanosheets. Since two metal oxides are derived from metal hydroxides by annealing, both components show porous characteristics, benefiting for the diffusion and transportation of electrolyte. Electrochemical measurements demonstrate that the hybrid film has a higher specific capacitance about 995F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1) than both Co3O4 and NiCo2O4 due to the synergistic effect between two materials, leading to a smaller resistance. An asymmetric cell using activated carbon as negative electrode and the hybrid film as positive electrode delivers an energy density of 36.8 Wh kg(-1) at 425 W kg(-1) in 1.65 V, showing large potential for energy storage.

Abstract:Abstract In this work, nickel cobaltite (NiCo 2 O 4 ) nanosheets with a porous structure were fabricated on nickel foam as a working electrode for supercapacitor applications. The nanosheets were fabricated by electrochemical deposition of nickel–cobalt hydroxide on the nickel foam substrate at ambient temperature in a three-electrode cell followed by annealing at 300 °C to transform the coating into a porous NiCo 2 O 4 nanosheet. Field emission scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy revealed a three-dimensional mesoporous structure, which facilitates ion transport and electronic conduction for fast redox reactions. For one cycle, the NiCo 2 O 4 electrodeposited nickel foam has a high specific capacitance (1734.9 F g −1 ) at a current density (CD) of 2 A g −1 . The electrode capacitance decreased by only approximately 12.7% after 3500 cycles at a CD of 30 A g −1 . Moreover, a solid-state asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) was built utilising the NiCo 2 O 4 nanosheets, carbon nanotubes, and a polyvinyl alcohol-potassium hydroxide gel as the anode, cathode, and solid-state electrolyte, respectively. The ASC displayed great electrochemical properties with a 42.25 W h kg −1 energy density at a power density of 298.79 W kg −1 .

Abstract:In this article, an indirect electrodeposition technique is applied for developing single- and bimetal-MOFs onto a porous nickel-foam (NF) support, which is found to have significant applications in a supercapacitor as binderless electrodes. In this regard, Ni-, Zn- and Ni,Zn-MOFs with different morphologies were deposited onto NF electrodes through indirect cathodic electrochemical deposition from terephthalic acid dissolved metal nitrate aqueous solutions. The prepared MOFs were analyzed using XRD, FT-IR, SEM and EDS analyzes. The structural analyses proved the formation of crystalline Ni-, Zn- and Ni,Zn-bdc MOFs onto nickel foam support. Electrochemical evaluations by charge-discharge tests revealed that the fabricated Ni-BDC/Ni foam, Zn-BDC/Ni foam and Ni,Zn-BDC/Ni foam electrodes are respectively capable of delivering specific capacitances of 536, 374, and 944 F g–1 at the applied current load of 2 A g–1. Furthermore, it is found that our fabricated samples exhibit capacitance retentions of 75.5%, 84.95% and 93.24% during 6000 cycling with the current density of 5 A g–1, respectively. The proper charge storage ability of the Ni,Zn-BDC/Ni foam electrode is attributed to its appropriate surface morphology, synergism effects and excellent physical contact as well as proper self-assembling onto the Ni foam.

Abstract:The NiCo 2 O 4 nanosheets arrays with oxygen vacancies on Ni foam (NiCo 2 O 4 /NF) hybrid electrode is made utilizing high-pressure hydrothermal synthesis and subsequent heat treatment. Benefitting from the joint contribution of the greater specific surface area, sufficient oxygen vacancies, and unique nanosheet array structure, the NiCo 2 O 4 /NF electrode exhibits an enhanced electrochemical properties, such as a high specific capacitance of 1452.6 F/g at 1 A/g and prominent cycle stability with a capacitance retention of 98.67% after 4000 cycles. Moreover, the capacitance remains at 591 F/g at 50 A/g, demonstrating better rate capability. In addition, an asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) was assembled based on NiCo 2 O 4 /NF//activated carbon (AC). Such an ASC delivers a high energy density of 47.95 Wh/kg at the power density of 750 W/kg and retains Wh/kg at W/kg. The ASC exhibits a preeminent cycling stability with a specific capacitance retention rate of 98.68% of initial capacitance after 25,000 cycles under 80 A/g.

Abstract:The rational design of electrode materials is greatly significant for improving the performance of the supercapacitor. In this work, high mass loading coral-like bimetallic nickel/cobalt-based metal-organic frameworks are in-situ constructed on cobalt-modified nickel foam (NiCo-MOFs/NF) via a facile cathodic electrodeposition process as binder-free electrodes for supercapacitors. Such electrodes with optimized Ni/Co molar ratios, high specific surface area and unique hierarchical structure with open channels provide abundant reaction active sites and fast ion transfer kinetics, and the three-dimensional porous Ni foam (NF) offers successive pathways for fast electron transportation. As a result, an ultrahigh areal specific capacitance of over 9300 mF cm −2 with a high-capacity retention of over 87% is achieved at 10 mA cm −2 . And the NiCo-MOFs/NF with Ni/Co molar ratio of 1:3 presents a favorable stability of retaining its 73% original specific capacitance after a long-term cycling of 10000 cycles. Moreover, the assembled all solid-state asymmetric supercapacitors (ASSCs) device performs an energy density of 617.2 mWh cm −2 at a power density of 7506.9 mW cm −2 .

Abstract:High-performance supercapacitors are very desirable for many portable electronic devices, electric vehicles and high-power electronic devices. Herein, a facile and binder-free synthesis method, galvanic displacement of the precursor followed by heat treatment, is used to fabricate ultrathin Co3O4 nanosheet arrays on nickel foam substrate. When used as a supercapacitor electrode the prepared Co3O4 on nickel foam exhibits a maximum specific capacitance of 1095 F g-1 at a current density of 1 A g-1 and good cycling stability of 71% retention after 2000 cycling tests. This excellent electrochemical performance can be ascribed to the high specific surface area of each Co3O4 nanosheet that comprises numerous nanoparticles.
Construction of 3D interconnected NiCo 2 S 4 /bio-carbon coated Ni foam as binder-free electrode for high-performance supercapacitor

Abstract:Although transition metal hydroxides/sulfides are considered as promising potential electrode materials for supercapacitors due to their excellent electrochemical activity, the low electrical conductivity, easy agglomeration of nanomaterials and poor rate performance seriously hinder their practical applications. Herein, we construct 3D interconnected binder-free electrode NiCo 2 S 4 /bio-carbon coated nickel foam (NiCo 2 S 4 /GRCNF) by growing NiCo 2 S 4 nanosheets on the surface of low-cost and highly conductive GRCNF substrate via a simple hydrothermal reaction followed with subsequent sulfidation. As suggested by systematic characterizations, the advantages of obtained NiCo 2 S 4 /GRCNF include that the ultrathin 3D interconnected network of NiCo 2 S 4 can furnish massive electrochemically active sites for faradic reaction, and the highly conductive GRCNF substrate promotes electron transfer and meanwhile prevents the aggregation of NiCo 2 S 4 nanosheets. With a high specific capacitance of 7.71 F cm -2 at 3 mA cm -2 , NiCo 2 S 4 /GRCNF has a huge application advantage over the contrast samples Ni-Co LDH/NF (3.29 F cm -2 ) and Ni-Co LDH/GRCNF (5.97 F cm -2 ). In addition, NiCo 2 S 4 /GRCNF shows a much higher rate performance (82.1%) than Ni-Co LDH/NF (44.5%) and Ni-Co LDH/GRCNF (66.4%). Furthermore, hybrid supercapacitor NiCo 2 S 4 /GRCNF//GNPC which is assembled with NiCo 2 S 4 /GRCNF as the anode possesses an impressive energy density of 0.429 mWh cm -2 at a power density of 7.023 mW cm -2 and good cycling stability (82.3% over 5000 cycles). The outstanding electrochemical performance of NiCo 2 S 4 /GRCNF suggests that the reported strategy provides new inspiration for the design and preparation of new binder-free composite electrodes for electrochemical energy storage.

Abstract:Mesoporous cobalt-nickel-zinc ternary oxide (CNZO) nanosheets grown on the nickel foam are prepared by a simple hydrothermal treatment and subsequent calcination process. The physical characterizations show that the as-obtained CNZO nanosheets possess the mesoporous structure and a high specific surface of 75.4 m2 g-1 has been achieved. When directly applied for the binder-free supercapacitor electrode for the first time, the nickel foam supported mesoporous CNZO nanosheet electrode exhibits an ultrahigh specific capacity about 1172.2 C g-1 at 1 A g-1. More significantly, an asymmetric supercapacitor based on the as-obtained CNZO positive electrode and an activated carbon negative electrode shows a high energy density of 84.2 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 374.8 W kg-1, with excellent cycle stability (keeps 78.8% capacitance retention and 100% coulombic efficiency after 2,500 cycles). The excellent supercapacitive properties suggest that the nickel foam supported CNZO nanosheet electrodes are promising for application as high-performance supercapacitor.

In this work, core-shell structured nanowires anchored on nickel foam are synthesized by the hydrothermal synthesis of NiCo2O4 as core and subsequent electrodeposition of alpha-Co(OH)(2) as shell. The core-shell composites exhibit enhanced electrochemical performances ascribing to the synergistic reactions from both materials, showing higher specific capacitance than any single component. By changing the deposition time, the mass loading of alpha-Co(OH)(2) can be easily controlled. The electrochemical performances of the hybrid electrodes are diverse with the mass loading of Co(OH)(2). The optimized hybrid electrode with 3 mins electrodeposition exhibits the highest specific capacitance (1298 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1)) among all electrodes. The redox reaction is a main contributor to the total specific capacitance through electrochemical kinetics analysis. An asymmetric supercapacitor assembled by the optimized material as positive electrode and activated carbon as negative electrode can achieve a relatively high energy density of 39.7 Wh kg(-1) at a power density of 387.5 W kg(-1) (at 0.5 A g(-1)) in a voltage of 1.55 V. Abstract:Ternary metal layered double hydroxide compounds are used as electrode materials to increase the specific capacitance of supercapacitors. Improvement of the substrate material also benefits the electrode material, which already displays excellent electrochemical properties. In this study, nickel foam (NF) was cleaned and then modified by chemical plating, which can significantly improve the corrosion resistance and retain the optimal electrical conductivity properties of the metallic material. This is because of the typically amorphous structure of the chemically plated NiP alloy. It also makes NF less susceptible to corrosion under strong alkaline conditions. Co-ZIF-67 was then prepared by a facile method, and NiMo-LDH was grown by controlling the duration of hydrothermal reaction during NF/ treatment. Finally, NF/ composites with embroidered spherical nanosheets of NiMoCo-LDH (NMC-LDH) were synthesized on NF/Ni-P and used to encourage the non-binder direct growth of electrodes. The binder-free electrode, NF/, exhibited outstanding electrochemical properties in 6 mol of KOH, including an ultra-high specific capacitance of 2980 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 and a capacitance retention of 82.95 % at 10 A g −1 . The cycle performance was also much higher compared to , with good cycle stability (82.68 % at 10 A g −1 after 5000 cycles). The NF///AC ASC showed a high specific energy at 727.9 W·kg −1 , generating 91.2 Wh·kg −1 with excellent capacity retention (86.97 % after 5000 cycles). Therefore, this work can provide new ideas for improving the specific capacitance of supercapacitors and preparing new electrode materials, which may have multiple application potentials in the whole energy storage industry.

Abstract:Although many researches have been made in the construction and fabrication of electrode materials for supercapacitors, it remains a difficult task to realize the application of the supercapacitor with high energy density. The binary MnCo2O4@NiO hierarchical electrode has been successfully fabricated on nickel foam (NF) without any binder or additives by simple hydrothermal methods and corresponding annealing processes. By virtue of constructing hierarchical core–shell structure with different morphologies and forming additive-free electrode, the composite electrode not only possesses abundant surface active sites for electrochemical reaction as well as large buffering space for volume deformation in the charging-discharging processes, but also shows the improved contacting area and electric conductivity between active substance and metal collector. The synthetic MnCo2O4@NiO/NF electrode presented higher specific capacitance (1186 F g−1 under 1 A g−1) and long cycle lifespan (maintain 91% of the original capacitance over 5000 cycles) under a high current density of 10 A g−1. Further, the asymmetric supercapacitor with MnCo2O4@NiO/NF electrode shows higher energy density of 42.2 Wh kg−1 under a power density of 748.2 W kg−1. These results demonstrate that the binary MnCo2O4@NiO hierarchical structure is the hopeful candidate material for high performance supercapacitor electrode.

Abstract:Nickel-Cobalt hydroxide microspheres are electrodepositioned on the films of NiCo2O4 nanowires grown on the current collector through a facile approach and the hierarchical structures are then investigated as an electrode material for high-performance supercapacitors. Owing to the superior electrical conductivity of NiCo2O4 nanowires, the porous structure of the (Ni-Co)(OH)(2) microspheres and the synergic effect of the multi-components, the electrode can deliver a high areal capacitance of 6 F cm(-2) and a corresponding specific capacitance of 1132 F g(-1) at a current density of 2 mA cm(-2), as well as a good rate capability (61.8% capacitance retention from 2 mA cm(-2) to 50 mA cm(-2)), and excellent cycling stability (90% capacitance retention after 2000 cycles). The results suggest that our research opens up the possibility for the fabrication of high-performance energy-storage devices of binder-free electrodes. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
High Performance Porous Nickel Cobalt Oxide Nanowires for Asymmetric Supercapacitor

Abstract:In this work, we present the formation of porous NiCo oxide nanowires from single crystal nickel cobalt bimetallic carbonate hydroxide nanowires (NiCo cNW) for supercapacitor applications. High aspect ratio NiCo cNWs are found to evolve from highly crystalline nickel cobalt layered double hydroxides through a dodecyl anion assisted crystallization–dissolution–recrystallization process. The porous nickel cobalt oxide (NixCo3−xO4) nanowire array is formed by the heat treatment of nickel cobalt bimetallic carbonate hydroxide nanowires on nickel foam (NF) for the assembly of supercapacitors. This binder free electrode shows a high specific capacitance of 1479Fg−1 at 1Ag−1 and 792Fg−1 at 30Ag−1, indicating an excellent rate capability. Asymmetric device is constructed from NixCo3−xO4 on NF and activated carbon (AC) with an operation potential from 0 to 1.6V. It shows a high specific capacitance of 105Fg−1 at a current density of 3.6mAcm−2, while it maintains 58.7Fg−1 at 89.4mAcm−2. In addition, the asymmetric device shows good stability towards long time charge–discharge cycles.
