Abstract:A search system for the textbook of urology has been developed and evaluated. The textbook is written in Japanese with 1.4 megabytes of text and has about 1000 pictures. The contents of the textbook can be seen with English or Japanese medical terms. The system contains a dictionary of Japanese medical terms. The dictionary has a network structure based on Japanese ideographic characters. Such a search system is useful for physicians because of its speed and the widely spread medical knowledge of many authors of the textbook.

Construction of Databases of Rare Old Medical Collections and Opening Them to the Public.

Abstract:Asahimachi Library, Niigata University has special, rare medical collections from the Edo and the Meiji periods that have been maintained by the former Niigata Medical School since the Meiji period. There are three important collections. The Morita Collection contains old manuscripts, Dutch-Japanese dictionaries, and other rare medical books from the Edo period. They are some of very few hand-written materials that have survived from that era. We constructed an image database of this collection, which is the first attempt of its kind in Japanese medical libraries. This database was developed by a joint team of the library staff and history teaching staff of Niigata University, and thus it has a superior search system for bibliographic data as well as an excellent image data system, The Takeyama Collection and the Fujita Collection also contain rare old medical books published both in Japan and in other countries in the 18th and the 19th centuries. We have constructed a bibliographic database of these two collections, and used the data to automatically prepare printed catalogs. In this paper we describe how we constructed these databases, especially the image-database of the Morita Collection. Another feature is a description of how we conduct public relations in mass-media, such as the Internet, newspapers, and TV. The results of the announcement were so great that many people visited our library and home page. The room in which these collections are exhibited has become a popular site for the public. After releasing these works, the old medical collections proved to be very important materials in modern medical libraries.

Abstract:Newspaper advertisements were the predominant medium in informing people about new products midway through the Meiji Era. Subscribers to these newspapers, however, were still limited. At the time, expositions were wildly popular. Seizing the opportunity , in 1903 Fujisawa promoted his "Fujisawa Camphor" through aggressive advertising at the 5th Domestic Industrial Exposition in Osaka. The advertising proved to be a success, as Fujisawa took 2nd Prize of the exposition.

The Heroic and Noble Life of Morizo ISHIDATE Commemorating the 115 years since his birth and 20 years since his death

Abstract:Morizo Ishidate was born in the city of Aomori on January 24, 1901, the third son in his family. As the 16th Director General of the NIHS, he announced his decision to reform the organization and implemented this action in 1966. In September 1970, as the president of the Central Pharmaceutical Affairs Council, he decided to stop the use of all quinoform preparations. On May 21, 1973, he held a historic talk with Dr. Taro Takemi. After the meeting, the separation of dispensing and prescribing functions opened a new chapter in pharmaceutical history. Such a heroic and noble life may be due to his faith. In April 1922, he entered “Doushikai,” a dormitory belonging to Tokyo Imperial University. Yoshinosuke Konishi was his best friend in the dormitory. They joined a bible class directed by an American missionary, Miss Laura J. Maukʼ. In September 1947, at the age of 49, Yoshinosuke decided to devote the rest of his life to being an evangelist. After that time, Morizo supported him for 33 years. At the age of 70, Morizo confessed his belief of Jesus Christ’s resurrection from the dead based upon following words in the bible, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come,” (2 CORINTHIANS 5 : 17). On July 18, 1996, he passed away at the age of 95.

Abstract:The study aims to recreate the portrait of the Japanese artist Saeki Yuzo (1898-1928), a representative of the “yoga” movement, in the context of his contemporary era. The author addresses the transformation of the Japanese art community of the Meiji and Taisho eras, identifies the peculiarities of formation of the “yoga” and “nihonga” painting trends in Japanese art, considers the main periods of Saeki Yuzo’s life and creative work (the first Paris period, the creation of Italian watercolors, return to Japan, the second Paris period). The paper is novel in that it is the first to determine how the traditions of the East and the West are interpreted in the works of the artist. As a result, the author substantiates the thesis that Saeki Yuzo was a follower in the context of European art and an innovator at home; the artist’s contribution marked a new stage in Japanese modernism – the transition from impressionism to Fauvist expressionism.

Abstract:Our benefactor Yakazu Doumei who devoted his life to Kampo medicine, has passed away his 96 years life on the 21th of October 2002. He went on to medical college for the revival of Kampo, and improved scientific research on Kampo. His achievements are; 1713 papers in scientific journal; 395 times lecture at academic meeting; 20 kinds of books of his authorship; 8 kinds of books under joint authorship. After World War II, he attended many meetings held in Taiwan and Korea. After normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and China, he visited China 8 times and opened wide road for interchange of both traditional medicine.

Abstract:In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content: Ōmori Shōzō and Kotodama Theory: How Can We Overcome the Need for Bodily Encounters? Maki Sato Introduction Ōmori Shōzō is known for his theory of tachi-araware monism. Tachiaraware monism is his attempted counter-argument to the Cartesian dualism of the object–subject divide, or in his words, a divide between physical ( butsuri , mono , science, object) and non-physical consciousness ( ishiki , koto , perception, incident), perception ( chikaku , 知覚) and conception ( shikō , 思考). His concept of Kasane-egaki is also often cited as a core concept of his theory of time. 1 The main aim of this paper is to first overview the works of Ōmori since there is only a limited amount of his translated work so far. 2 Consecutively, the paper focuses on Ōmori's theory of kotodama and its related arguments with an intention to expand his concept of Kowaburi into the ethics of online encounters during the pandemic. The world in 2020 was suddenly forced to face the pandemic caused by COVID-19. What COVID-19 alerted us to is tremendous, and there are countless problems that the invisible virus has revealed. Among those are the hidden problems of contemporary society, not limited to the discrimination among races, gender, and jobs (white-collars versus essential workers), the problem of zoonosis, and the related environmental problems (climate change and intrusion into wild nature) caused by over-exploitation of nature. In developed countries, most students and those serving as intellectual workers face their daily lives being overly occupied with online lectures and meetings. COVID-19 worked to normalize remote work, which further normalized and forced our everyday life to shift to cyberspace. [End Page 101] In introducing and overviewing Ōmori's philosophy, this paper attempts to see the current situation through Ōmori's philosophy to draw out some ethical implications related to non-physical online encounters and how we can perceive human interactions and relationships under such conditions. Under the constraints caused by COVID-19, humans' limitless desires to interact with others are expanding more so to the sphere of cyberspace, leading to technological development, such as VR. In short, first, the paper overviews Ōmori's philosophy. Second, through the overview of Ōmori's philosophy, the paper seeks adaptable philosophy of his that may work as soft binding grounding ethics for cyberspace encounters where substantial bodily encounters are void. In doing so, the paper intends to draw out weak binding ethics implied in Ōmori's philosophy that may work to empathetically engage with others in cyberspace where embodied encounters with others are dissolved. Ōmori Shōzō and His Philosophy: A Short Introduction and Overview In his short essay introducing the Japanese philosophy of the 1970s, Yasuo Kobayashi coined the term "Komaba quartet" by selecting four active eminent philosophers based on the Komaba campus at the University of Tokyo. 3 Among them is Ōmori Shōzō (1921–97), aligning with Hiromatsu Wataru (1933–94), Sakabe Megumi (1936–2009), and Inoue Tadashi (1926–2014). Ōmori is the oldest of the Komaba quartet and received higher education before World War II. He served at the Naval Technology Institute Mitaka Laboratory during the war with his physics degree from the Tokyo Imperial University. 4 After the war, he studied philosophy at the University of Tokyo with an interest in phenomenology, leading him to study at Harvard and Stanford in the United States. During his professorship at the University of Tokyo, he inspired countless students who are now leading the philosophy academy in Japan, such as Noe Keiichi (1949–) and Noya Shigeki (1954–). In the round-table discussion titled "Explanatory Round-Table on the Charm of Ōmori's Philosophy," four of his former students—Iida Takashi and Tanji Nobuharu, in addition to Noe and Noya—worked on selecting his works. Abstract:Wu Changshuo’s “Yu-Gu-Wei-Tu与古為徒” Chinese Plaque, on the wall in the area of Oriental arts collection in Museum of Fine Arts (MFA), Boston, have been thought Okakura Tenshin, who was the head of Chinese and Japanese arts collection of the museum, had asked Wu Changshuo to make it. However, in fact, Nagao Uzan (he was a Okakura’s friend and Sinologist who lived in Shanghai,) asked Wu Changshuo as his neighbor to write, and put it in a Black Lacquer. Then, he sent it to Okakura in Boston. Since Nagao was asked to be an advisory staff at MFA by Okakura at that time, he sent the plaque as an inaugural gift, I think. Okaura’s contributions at MFA have been highly regarded, but nobody have mentioned there was cooperation by a scholar named Nagao, who had a relationship with Wu Changshuo and inherited the orthodox of Sinology. The purpose of this report is analyzing his works and finding out the signification of the cultural exchange between Japan, China, and the US, which have achieved success in modern times. Rediscovering Japanese Urban Space in a World Context

Abstract:Counter to the rise of the modern metropolis in Japan in “the era of high-speed growth” following World War II, a movement to embrace elements of traditional townscapes that had been lost as rational urban planning took hold from the mid-1950s to the mid-1970s. During this period, the realities of large-scale urban development and increasing urban problems would eventually expose the limitations of functional planning and the need to preserve traditional structures and townscapes. While architects like Bruno Taut had praised the virtues of the farmhouse villages at Shirakawago in the 1930s and Yoshida Tetsurō presented traditional Japanese architecture to an international audience as contemporary design before World War II, among others, the discourse subsequently shifted from Japanese objects and structures to urban space in the postwar period. This discourse on Japanese urban space would lead to the publication of “Nihon no toshi kūkan” (Japanese Urban Space) in 1963 (1968 as a book) that presented the work of the Toshi dezain kenkyūtai (Urban Design Research Group) including Isozaki Arata (1931-) and architectural historian Itō Teiji (1922-2010). This article analyzes the origins and implications of this work through a plethora of subsequent “design surveys” throughout Japan and other trajectories of research and design of Japanese urban space from the 1960s to the present.

Abstract:Identifying the factors underlying severe COVID-19 in the host genetics is an emerging issue 1–5 . We conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) involving 2,393 Japanese COVID-19 cases collected in initial pandemic waves with 3,289 controls, which identified a variant on 5q35 (rs60200309-A) near DOCK2 associated with severe COVID-19 in younger (<65 ages) patients ( n Case =440, odds ratio=2.01, P =1.2×10 -8 ). This risk allele was prevalent in East Asians but rare in Europeans, showing a value of non-European GWAS. RNA-seq of 473 bulk peripheral blood identified decreasing effect of the risk allele on DOCK2 expression in younger patients. DOCK2 expression was suppressed in severe forms of COVID-19. Single cell RNA-seq analysis ( n =61) identified cell type-specific downregulation of DOCK2 and COVID-19-specific decreasing effects of the risk allele on DOCK2 in non-classical monocytes. Immunohistochemistry of lung specimens from severe COVID-19 pneumonia showed suppressed DOCK2. Moreover, inhibition of DOCK2 function using CPYPP induced much more severe pneumonia in a Syrian hamster model of SARS-CoV-2 infection characterized as weight loss, lung edema, enhanced viral loads, impaired macrophage recruitment and dysregulated type I interferon responses. We conclude that DOCK2 plays an important role in the host immune response to SARS-CoV-2 infection and development of severe COVID-19, and could be further explored as a potential biomarker and/or therapeutic target.

Abstract:This short note describes the history of cosmic ray research. A part of this document was presented orally at the international conference of CRIS 2010 held in Catania, Italy. The document is written being based on the English translation of a Japanese article entitled "One Hundred Years of Research on Cosmic Rays". The document was published in 2008 by the Japan Astronomy Society as a series of books on "Modern Astronomy" (Volume 17).
