Abstract:In rivers, riverbeds are considered to have dual properties as a short-term sink and a source of further mobilization for microplastics. To better understand the sources, storage, and fate of microplastics in river systems, this study quantified the formation of microplastic hotspots in riverbeds and seasonal variations in microplastic inventories in riverbeds, especially for small-sized microplastics (<330 µm), with a fluorescence-based protocol. This study provides first-hand measured evidence for the sequestration of microplastics in the riverbed under low-flow conditions and its export from the riverbed under high-flow conditions. The results show that riverbeds in urban areas are still hotspots for microplastic pollution and that high inputs of urban microplastics control microplastic load in its downstream areas. Seasonal rainfall exported 34.86 % (equivalent to 4.34 × 1011 items/8.57 t) of microplastic pollution from the riverbed, and its removal capacity may be related to the rainfall intensity. Wider riverbeds are conducive to the formation of microplastic hotspots due to the flow slow down. Most importantly, rainfall-driven scouring of the riverbed can enhance the pollution of small-sized microplastics in the riverbed, especially the smallest-size microplastics (<100 µm). Therefore, this study not only contributes reliable information about the sequestration and export of microplastics in the riverbed, but also provides a possible mechanism to explain the lack of small-sized microplastics (<330 µm) in the ocean.
Microplastic distribution and their abundance along rivers are determined by land uses and sediment granulometry

Abstract:Microplastics in freshwater ecosystems have gained attention for their potential impact on biodiversity. Rivers are complex and dynamic ecosystems that transport particles and organic matter from the headwaters through watersheds to the ocean. Changes in land use and the presence of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) increase the risk of plastic contamination. Simultaneously, hydromorphological features of the watershed can influence the dispersion and retention of microplastics. This study assesses the impact of urban land uses and river hydromorphology on microplastic abundance and spatial distribution in two watersheds with contrasting land uses. Unexpectedly, our findings show that microplastics were widespread throughout watersheds both in water (3.5 ± 3.3 particles/L) and sediments (56.9 ± 39.9 particles/g). The concentration of microplastics in sediments significantly increased in granulometry ranging from 0.5 to 1 mm. Microplastics in running waters are significantly correlated with increasing urban land use coverage. However, the presence and distance of WWTPs did not affect microplastic distribution. In conclusion, contrasting patterns were observed for suspended and sedimented microplastic particles: suspended microplastics were associated with an anthropogenic effect, whereas the concentration of microplastics in sediments was determined by riverbed granulometry. Our results suggest that the interaction of anthropogenic and environmental factors shapes microplastic distribution along the rivers and their subsequent transport toward the coastal ocean. Finally, a review of the current literature reveals the absence of standardization in field and laboratory assessment techniques and measurement units, representing a challenge for intercomparisons of river microplastic studies.
Depth Profiles of Microplastics in Sediments from Inland Water to Coast and Their Influential Factors

Abstract:Microplastics, plastic particles with a size smaller than 5 mm, are widely observed in the global environments and pose a growing threat as they accumulate and affect the environments in numerous ways. These particles can be transported from inland water to coast and disperse from surface water to deep sediments, especially the latter, while knowledge of the hidden microplastics in sediment layers is still lacking. Understanding the characteristics and behavior of microplastics in deep sediments from inland water to coast is crucial for estimating the present and future global plastic budget from land to seas. Herein, present knowledge of microplastic sedimentation from inland water to coast is reviewed, with a focus on the physical characteristics of microplastics and environmental factors that affect sedimentation. The abundance, shape, composition, and timeline of microplastics in sediment layers in rivers, floodplains, lakes, estuaries and coastal wetlands are presented. The abundance of microplastics in sediment layers varies across sites and may exhibit opposite trends along depth, and generally the proportion of relatively small microplastics increases with depth, while less is known about the vertical trends in the shape and composition of microplastics. Timeline of microplastics is generally linked to the sedimentation rate, which varies from millimeters to centimeters per year in the reviewed studies. The spatiotemporal characteristics of microplastic sedimentation depend on the settling and erosion of microplastics, which are determined by two aspects, microplastic characteristics and environmental factors. The former aspect includes size, shape and density influenced by aggregation and biofouling, and the latter includes dynamic forces, topographic features, bioturbation and human activities. The comprehensive review of these factors highlights the needs to further quantify the characteristics of microplastic sedimentation and explore the role of these factors in microplastic sedimentation on various spatiotemporal scales.
Riverbed depth-specific microplastics distribution and potential use as process marker

Abstract:Riverbed sediments have been identified as temporary and long-term accumulation sites for microplastic particles (MPs), but the relocation and retention mechanisms in riverbeds still need to be better understood. In this study, we investigated the depth-specific occurrence and distribution (abundance, type, and size) of MPs in river sediments down to a depth of 100 cm, which had not been previously investigated in riverbeds. In four sediment freeze cores taken for the Main River (Germany), MPs (≥ 100 µm) were detected using two complementary analytical approaches (spectroscopy and thermoanalytical) over the entire depth with an average of 21.7 ± 21.4 MP/kg or 31.5 ± 28.0 mg/kg. Three vertical trends for MP abundance could be derived, fairly constant in top layers (0-‍30 cm), a decrease in middle layers (30-60 cm), and a strong increase in deep layers (60-100 cm). The dominant polymer types were polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS). Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and PP were also found in deep layers, albeit with the youngest age of earliest possible occurrence (EPO age of 1973 and 1954). The fraction of smaller-sized MPs (100-500 µm) increased with depth in shallow layers, but the largest MPs (> 1 mm) were detected in deep layers. Based on these findings, we elucidate the relationship between the depth-specific MP distribution and the prevailing processes of MP retention and sediment dynamics in the riverbed. We propose some implications and offer an initial conceptual approach, suggesting the use of microplastics as a potential environmental process tracer for driving riverbed sediment dynamics.
Seasonal pulse effect of microplastics in the river catchment-From tributary catchment to mainstream

Abstract:Rivers have received extensive attention as a major pathway for microplastics (<5000 μm) from land to ocean. This study investigated the seasonal variation of microplastic contamination in surface water of the Liangfeng River catchment, a tributary of the Li River in China, based on a fluorescence-based protocol, and further explored the migration process of microplastic in the river catchment. The abundance of microplastics (50-5000 μm) was (6.20 ± 0.57)-(41.93 ± 8.13) items/L, of which 57.89-95.12% were small-sized microplastics (<330 μm). The microplastic fluxes in the upper Liangfeng River, lower Liangfeng River, and upper Li River were (14.89 ± 1.24) × 1012, (5.71 ± 1.15) × 1012, and (1.54 ± 0.55) × 1014 items/year, respectively. The 3.70% of microplastic load in the mainstream came from the tributary input. Fluvial processes can effectively retain 61.68% of microplastics in the surface water of river catchments, especially for small-sized microplastics. The rainy season is the main period of microplastic retention (91.87%) in the tributary catchment by fluvial processes, while exporting 77.42% of one-year microplastic emissions from the tributary catchment into the mainstream. This study is the first to reveal the transport characteristics of small-sized microplastics in river catchments based on flux variation, which not only can partly explain the "missing small-sized microplastic fraction" in the ocean, but also contribute to improving microplastic model.

Abstract:The widespread presence of microplastics (MPs) in aquatic environments has become a significant concern, with freshwater sediments acting as terminal sinks, rapidly picking up these emerging anthropogenic particles. However, the accumulation, transport, degradation and biochemical impacts of MPs in freshwater sediments remain unresolved issues compared to other environmental compartments. Therefore, this paper systematically revealed the spatial distribution and characterization information of MPs in freshwater (rivers, lakes, and estuaries) sediments, in which small-size (<1 mm), fibers, transparent, polyethylene (PE), and polypropylene (PP) predominate, and the average abundance of MPs in river sediments displayed significant heterogeneity compared to other matrices. Next, the transport kinetics and drivers of MPs in sediments are summarized, MPs transport is controlled by the particle diversity and surrounding environmental variability, leading to different migration behaviors and transport efficiencies. Also emphasized the spatio-temporal evolution of MPs degradation processes and biodegradation mechanisms in sediments, different microorganisms can depolymerize high molecular weight polymers into low molecular weight biodegradation by-products via secreting hydrolytic enzymes or redox enzymes. Finally, discussed the ecological impacts of MPs on microbial-nutrient coupling in sediments, MPs can interfere with the ecological balance of microbially mediated nutrient cycling by altering community networks and structures, enzyme activities, and nutrient-related functional gene expressions. This work aims to elucidate the plasticity characteristics, fate processes, and potential ecological impact mechanisms of MPs in freshwater sediments, facilitating a better understanding of environmental risks of MPs in freshwater sediments.

Abstract:Microplastics contamination in the environment is a global problem, but little is known about their dynamics in urban river networks, an important site of microplastics occurrence and harboring complex transport pathways. In this study, we investigated the spatiotemporal dynamic of microplastics in a typical urban river network in eastern China from December 2018 to September 2019. microplastics abundance (mean +/- standard deviation) in the river network ranged from 2.3 +/- 1.2 to 104.6 +/- 5.6 particles/L and was significantly higher during the wet than during the dry season. The distribution of microplastics in the upper, middle, and lower reaches of the river network did not significantly differ, nor did the abundance of microplastics in the surface water vs. the bottom water. However, high abundances were determined in commercial and industrial areas, at a wastewater treatment plant outlet, in an urban canal, and in an urban-rural fringe area. The seasonal dynamics of the overall abundance of microplastics could be explained by the hysteresis effect of urban plastic production and the variation in regional precipitation. 78.2% of the microplastics were < 330 mu m in size; the most common colors were blue and black, and the most common shapes were fragments and fibers. The polymer types of the microplastics were assessed using laser direct infrared (LDIR), a novel chemical imaging system that identified silicone, rubber, polytetrafluoroethylene, and polypropylene as the main components of the microplastics. A non metric multidimensional scaling analysis (NMDS) based on the abundance of the polymer components across samples showed aggregations of sampling sites, that indicated the possible sources of the microplastics. Our study provides insights into the spatiotemporal dynamics of microplastics in an urban river network and suggests the potential of LDIR in the accurate quantitative analysis of microplastics in the environment.

Abstract:Microplastic contamination of river sediments has been found to be pervasive at the global scale and responsive to plastic and sediment bed properties, the flow regime and the river morphology. The physical controls governing the storage, remobilization and pathways of transfer in sand bed rivers remain unquantified. This means it is not currently possible to determine the risks posed by microplastic contamination within these globally significant river systems. Using controlled flume experiments we show that sand bed rivers can store up to 40% of their microplastic load within the sediment bed indicating that these environments can act as resilient sinks of microplastics. By linking bedform dynamics with microplastic transport characteristics we show that similarities exist between granular transport phenomena and the behavior, and hence predictability, of microplastic flux. Specifically, we demonstrate the inverse relationship between bedform celerity and microplastic retention within the bed can be used to predict microplastic flux. Further, we show that, in these environments, microplastic shape is more important than previously thought in controlling the fate of microplastics. Together, these findings are significant since they have important implications for the prediction and hence management of microplastic contamination in sand bed environments.

Microplastics and riverine macroinvertebrate communities in a multiple-stressor context: A mesocosm approach

Abstract:Growing use of synthetic materials has increased the number of stressors that can degrade freshwater ecosystems. Many of these stressors are relatively new and poorly understood, such as microplastics which are now ubiquitous in freshwater systems. The effects of microplastics on freshwater biota must be investigated further in order to better manage and mitigate their impacts. Our experiment provides the first empirical evaluation of stream invertebrate community dynamics in response to microplastics of different concentrations and sizes, in combination with fine sediment, a pervasive known stressor in running waters. In a 7-week streamside experiment using 64 flow-through circular mesocosms, we investigated the effects of exposure to three simulated microplastic influxes (polyethylene microspheres at four levels between 0 and 28,800 items/event) and the addition of fine sediment (to simulate a polluted stream environment). Invertebrate drift was monitored for 48 h immediately after each microplastic influx, and benthic invertebrate communities were sampled after 28 days of microplastic and sediment manipulations. Microplastic concentration, size and fine sediment all had significant factor main effects on several invertebrate drift response metrics, whereas few microplastic main effects were seen in the benthic community. However, interactive stressor effects were common in different combinations between sediment, microplastic size and concentration, suggesting multiple-stressor relationships between microplastics and fine sediment. Microplastic ingestion was witnessed in four of 12 taxa analysed: Hydrobiosidae, Deleatidium spp., Potamopyrgus antipodarum and Archichauliodes diversus. Our findings provide insights into how microplastics affect drift and benthic community dynamics of stream invertebrates in a field-realistic experimental setting and highlight areas requiring further study. These include investigations of invertebrate drift dynamics in response to other types of microplastics, the role invertebrate size may play in determining their vulnerability to microplastic pollution, and framing more microplastic research in a field-realistic multiple-stressor context.

Abstract:The prevalence of microplastic (MP) contamination has become a significant environmental concern due to its pervasive nature and persistent effects. While sediments are considered major repositories for MPs, information on their spatial distribution within these matrices is insufficient. This research examined both the horizontal and vertical presence of MPs in the sediments surrounding Lake Paldang in South Korea, alongside a comprehensive evaluation of the physicochemical characteristics of the samples obtained. The total content of MPs varied from 2.15 to 122.2 particles g −1 . The average contents of MPs on surface sediments were 40.47, 34.14, 5.01, and 8.19 particles g −1 in north mainstream (NM), south mainstream (SM), tributary (TB), and Tributary catchment (TC) based on Sonae Island, Gyeongan stream, respectively. The most abundant MP types were polyethylene (PE), polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), and polypropylene (PP), accounting for more than 70% of the total MPs. The most abundant sizes of MPs were within 45–100 μm. At all sediment depths, polymers were distributed in the order PE, PP, and polyester in NM, SM, and TC, respectively, whereas PTFE mainly occurred in the surface layer. MPs distribution also exhibited seasonal variation as larger inflows and flow rates varied with season.

Hydro-geomorphic perspectives on microplastic distribution in freshwater river systems: A critical review

Abstract:Freshwater river systems are commonly defined as the main transport paths of microplastics (MP) from land into the seas. A shift in research interest from oceans to rivers can be observed, as a large number of i) case studies, ii) review papers and iii) experimental studies in this field have been published recently. Still, studies often lack an in-depth consideration of quantification, as units are mostly based on item numbers. Spatiotemporal aspects are often neglected. Transport paths linking MP sources and sinks in the environment are insufficiently understood and only recently the awareness increased that sustainable management of the MP pollution cannot be addressed without a sound knowledge of water- and sediment-driven MP transport. Within this review paper, we therefore i) reviewed 92 MP case-studies, with a special focus on spatiotemporal aspects and ii) gathered and compared global load-estimation data from these studies. We then outlined the key processes determining MP movement in rivers on the basis of existing laboratory experiments and theoretical approaches. A procedure to effectively compare units of MP in the water column and in riverine sediments was developed on the basis of i) an extensive MP-dataset in German waterways and ii) suspended sediment concentrations (SSC) of nearest monitoring stations of the German water and shipping authority. Our analysis indicates that relating MP in water samples to SSC reduces the often stated large difference between MP concentrations in the water column and bed sediments and therefore relativizes the importance of river beds as a major "MP sink". As for a quantification of MP fluxes, the use of MP masses as unit is crucial, we applied an approach to convert MP items to masses with the help of i) a power-law distribution of MP-particle size, triangular distributions of ii) form-ratios and iii) polymer densities. An evaluation with an own, extensive dataset of MP-particles showed reasonable results. Therefore, we translated global load data from item numbers to mass values for further analysis. Values were within a reasonable range, especially when considering the respective catchment size of each river at the sampling site.

Abstract:Riverine outflow is one of the major pathways for microplastic transportation to coastal environments. Research on the output of microplastics in small- or medium-sized rivers will help accurately understand the status of their marine loads. In this study, we used both trawling and pumping methods to collect microplastics of different sizes in the Jiulong River Estuary and Xiamen Bay. We found that the abundance of small microplastics (44 μm–5.0 mm) was at least 20 times higher than the large particles (0.33–5.0 mm). The abundance of the large particles ranges from 4.96 to 16.3 particles/m 3 , and that of the small particles ranged from 82.8 to 918 particles/m 3 . Granule was the dominant shape (>60%), and polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) were the most common components. The riverine flux of small microplastics (44 μm–5 mm, 472 ± 230 t/y) was at a medium level and was eight times greater than that of large particles (0.33–5.0 mm, 61.2 ± 2.6 t/y). The behavior of the large microplastics was relatively conservative, whose abundance had a significant correlation with salinity ( R 2 = 0.927) and was mainly influenced by physical factors. In contrast, results of statistical analysis revealed that more complicated factors influenced the small microplastics.

Abstract:Microplastic disposal into riverine ecosystems is an emergent ecological hazard that mainly originated from land-based sources. This paper presents a comprehensive review on physical processes involved in microplastics transport in riverine ecosystems. Microplastic transport is governed by physical characteristics (e.g., plastic particle density, shape, and size) and hydrodynamics (e.g., laminar and turbulent flow conditions). High-density microplastics are likely to prevail near riverbeds, whereas low-density particles float over river surfaces. Microplastic transport occurs either due to gravity-driven (vertical transport) or settling (horizontal transport) in river ecosystems. Microplastics are subjected to various natural phenomena such as suspension, deposition, detachment, resuspension, and translocation during transport processes. Limited information is available on settling and rising velocities for various polymeric plastic particles. Therefore, this paper highlights how appropriately empirical transport models explain vertical and horizontal distribution of microplastic in riverine ecosystems. Microplastics interact, and thus feedback loops within the environment govern their fate, particularly as these ecosystems are under increasing biodiversity loss and climate change threat. This review provides outlines for fate and transport of microplastics in riverine ecosystems, which will help scientists, policymakers, and stakeholders in better monitoring and mitigating microplastics pollution.

Abstract:Sediments have been found to be one of the most important reservoirs for microplastics, providing abundant indigenous microbes. The processes involved in the distribution and degradation behavior of microplastics are complex. This study investigated the vertical distribution of microplastics (with the size < 5 mm) and the bacterial community assemblages colonizing microplastics in urban river sediments at a depth from 0 to 50 cm. The results showed that both microplastics and associated microbial communities presented vertical profiles in river sediments. The mean concentration of microplastics increased from the shallow layers to the deep layers of sediments, and smaller microplastic particles were dominant in deeper layers. A greater degradation of microplastics in deeper layers was confirmed by contact angle measurements, scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy-attenuated total reflectance analyses. Unlike the surrounding sediments, the whole bacterial communities on microplastics exhibited higher frequency of positive correlations in the bacterial co-occurrence network, which indicated a less stability of bacterial communities on microplastics. The indicative plastic-degrading bacteria with an average abundance of 4.33% was found in the surrounding sediments, while on the microplastics 21.37% was found. From shallow layers to deep layers, the indicative plastic-degrading bacteria significantly increased both in the abundance and in their betweenness centrality in the co-occurrence network, which suggested a potentially primary role of these bacteria in the degradation of microplastics in deep layers. This study provides new insight into the vertical distribution and the potential microbial degrading characteristics of microplastics in urban river sediments, which expanded our understanding of the fate of microplastics in aquatic environments. The observed results implied a great risk that microplastics might become smaller and more in deepened sediments and finally migrate into groundwater.

Abstract:Rivers have been recognized as major transport pathways for microplastics into the sea but large-scale quantitative data on the environmental fate of riverine microplastics remains limited, hindering proper risk assessment and development of regulatory measures. Microplastics in the whole Yangtze River Basin of China were systematically investigated by sampling the water, sediment, and soil. Microplastics were detected in all samples, with an average abundance of 1.27 items/L, 286.20 items/kg, and 338.09 items/kg for water, sediments, and soils, respectively, with polypropylene and polyethylene being the most abundant polymers. A generally increasing trend of microplastic abundance from upstream to downstream was identified, which were co-attributed by geographical and anthropogenic factors including elevation, longitude, distance from the nearest city, population density, urbanization rate, and land use. Microplastics in the sediments showed more prominent vertical migration than those in the soils, and the density and size of microplastics may be the key factors governing the migration of microplastics across different compartments. Community analysis showed that microplastics in different compartments were significantly different and highly correlated with geographical distance. Major cities at the middle and lower reaches were considered pivotal nodes of microplastic pollution in the Yangtze River Basin. Policy recommendations were also proposed towards better remediation of microplastic pollution involving riverine systems.

Abstract:Microplastics pollution in river systems has generated great concern; however, few studies have focused on the contributions of multiple influencing factors to microplastics in river systems. In the current study, we utilized data on microplastics in surface sediments from the Haihe River, a seagoing river in northern China to establish a generalized additive model (GAM) for quantifying the effects of multiple factors on the distribution of microplastics. A high abundance of microplastics (4980 ± 2462 items∙kg−1 dry weight) was found. Small particles (< 1000 µm) accounted for a dominant proportion (44.8−61.0%). Polyethylene (PE) was the chief component with an averaged fraction of 49.3%, in which low- and high-density polyethylene contributed 90.7% and 9.3% of the PE, respectively. Microplastics abundance was positively correlated with sediment TOC and the silt fraction (p < 0.05) but negatively correlated with the sand fraction (p < 0.05). The GAM could explain approximate 60% of the total microplastics abundance, and dam (28.5%), sediment TOC (22.9%), and sewage effluent (17.6%) were the main contributors to total variations in microplastics abundance. Local sewage effluent acted as an important point source of microplastics discharge, and the dam on the river greatly affected the deposition and accumulation of microplastics.

Abstract:Biofilms, which are ubiquitous in aquatic ecosystems such as rivers, may play an essential role in the fate of microplastics (MPs) and their ingestion by biofilm protists. A combination of field and laboratory experiments shows that riverine biofilms contain up to 10 times more MPs than ambient water and retain 6–12 times more MPs than surfaces without biofilms. The ciliate Stentor coeruleus ingests MPs, especially in high ambient concentrations. Microplastics (MPs) are released into the environment through human activities and are transported by rivers from land to sea. Biofilms, which are ubiquitous in aquatic ecosystems such as rivers, may play an essential role in the fate of MPs and their ingestion by biofilm protists. To assess this, biofilms were naturally grown on clay tiles in the River Rhine, Germany, and analysed in a combined field and laboratory study. Compared to the ambient river water, biofilms grown for 6, 12, and 18 months in the River Rhine contained up to 10 times more MPs. Between 70% and 78% of all MPs were smaller than 50 μm. In laboratory experiments, clay tiles covered with 1‐month‐old naturally grown biofilm retained 6–12 times more MPs than clay tiles without biofilm coverage. Furthermore, the ingestion of MPs of 6 and 10 μm by the ciliate Stentor coeruleus was confirmed, and a positive correlation between ingestion rates and ambient MP concentrations was found. The results are relevant for particle transport models in riverine systems, risk assessment of MPs regarding their distribution and fate in the aquatic environment, and the effects of MPs on micro‐ and macroorganisms.

Abstract:The quantification of microplastic (MP) pollution in rivers is often constrained by a lack of historical data on a multi-decadal scale, which hinders the evaluation of public policies. In this study, MP contents and trends were analyzed in dated sediment cores sampled upstream and downstream of a large metropolis, in environmental deposits that exhibited consistent sedimentation patterns from the 1980s to 2021. After a thorough sedimentological analysis, MPs were quantified in samples by micro Fourier Transform InfraRed spectroscopy (μFTIR imaging) and a density separation and organic matter digestion procedure. Microplastics recorded in the upstream core are relatively ubiquitous all along the dated sequence. The results also confirmed a sever increase of microplastics levels in the downstream core, by one order of magnitude, and an increase of polymer types. Polypropylene, polyethylene, and polystyrene represent ubiquitous contamination and were predominant at the two stations, whereas polyvinyl chloride and polytetrafluoroethylene were suspected to be abundant at the downstream station, but were not detected at the upstream station. Their presence could be linked to local contamination from specific industrial sources that manufactured and utilized these polymers. Surprisingly, in the downstream station sediment has recorded a relative improvement in polymers associated with industrial sources since the 2000s and, to a lesser extent, for ubiquitous ones since the 2010s. This trend of mitigation diverges from that of global assessments, that assume uncontrolled MP pollution, and suggest that European Union wastewater policy and regulation on industrial discharges have positively influenced water quality, and certainly also on MPs. However, the accumulation of microplastics remains high in recent deposits and raises the emerging concern of the long-term management of these reservoirs.

Abstract:The extensive use of plastic products has resulted in a significant influx of microplastics into aquatic ecosystems, particularly in highly urbanized areas and their associated river environments. However, the specific pathways and quantities through which these microplastics enter the river environment are still unclear, which poses a challenge in developing effective measures to mitigate their sources. In this paper, the spatiotemporal variations of microplastics from different sources in highly urbanized rivers within the Shenzhen Bay watershed were investigated through field sampling, experimental and statistical analysis, and the measures of microplastic reduction were discussed. The observation results exhibited a negative logarithmic correlation between the abundance of microplastics in river water and monthly rainfall (R = 0.994, MSE = 0.051, p < 0.05). When the monthly rainfall was <6 mm, the abundance of microplastics was absolutely dependent on point sources. While the rainfall exceeded 470 mm, the abundance was absolutely predominantly influenced by nonpoint source microplastics. The annual load of microplastics from the watershed was 5.39 × 1012 items, of which 61.6 % originated from point sources. Among the microplastics from point sources, 92.1 % were derived from fibers generated by textile washing. Fragmented microplastics (41.9 %) were the most common type of microplastics from nonpoint sources, primarily originating from the disintegration and weathering of disposable plastics. In the future, there is an expectation to reduce the microplastic load in the watershed to 15.9 % of the total by improving sewage treatment processes and infrastructure. This study can provide scientific guidance for environmental planning and serve as a warning regarding the impact of microplastics on ecosystems in urbanized areas.
