Abstract:Rivers have received extensive attention as a major pathway for microplastics (<5000 μm) from land to ocean. This study investigated the seasonal variation of microplastic contamination in surface water of the Liangfeng River catchment, a tributary of the Li River in China, based on a fluorescence-based protocol, and further explored the migration process of microplastic in the river catchment. The abundance of microplastics (50-5000 μm) was (6.20 ± 0.57)-(41.93 ± 8.13) items/L, of which 57.89-95.12% were small-sized microplastics (<330 μm). The microplastic fluxes in the upper Liangfeng River, lower Liangfeng River, and upper Li River were (14.89 ± 1.24) × 1012, (5.71 ± 1.15) × 1012, and (1.54 ± 0.55) × 1014 items/year, respectively. The 3.70% of microplastic load in the mainstream came from the tributary input. Fluvial processes can effectively retain 61.68% of microplastics in the surface water of river catchments, especially for small-sized microplastics. The rainy season is the main period of microplastic retention (91.87%) in the tributary catchment by fluvial processes, while exporting 77.42% of one-year microplastic emissions from the tributary catchment into the mainstream. This study is the first to reveal the transport characteristics of small-sized microplastics in river catchments based on flux variation, which not only can partly explain the "missing small-sized microplastic fraction" in the ocean, but also contribute to improving microplastic model.

Abstract:Microplastics contamination in the environment is a global problem, but little is known about their dynamics in urban river networks, an important site of microplastics occurrence and harboring complex transport pathways. In this study, we investigated the spatiotemporal dynamic of microplastics in a typical urban river network in eastern China from December 2018 to September 2019. microplastics abundance (mean +/- standard deviation) in the river network ranged from 2.3 +/- 1.2 to 104.6 +/- 5.6 particles/L and was significantly higher during the wet than during the dry season. The distribution of microplastics in the upper, middle, and lower reaches of the river network did not significantly differ, nor did the abundance of microplastics in the surface water vs. the bottom water. However, high abundances were determined in commercial and industrial areas, at a wastewater treatment plant outlet, in an urban canal, and in an urban-rural fringe area. The seasonal dynamics of the overall abundance of microplastics could be explained by the hysteresis effect of urban plastic production and the variation in regional precipitation. 78.2% of the microplastics were < 330 mu m in size; the most common colors were blue and black, and the most common shapes were fragments and fibers. The polymer types of the microplastics were assessed using laser direct infrared (LDIR), a novel chemical imaging system that identified silicone, rubber, polytetrafluoroethylene, and polypropylene as the main components of the microplastics. A non metric multidimensional scaling analysis (NMDS) based on the abundance of the polymer components across samples showed aggregations of sampling sites, that indicated the possible sources of the microplastics. Our study provides insights into the spatiotemporal dynamics of microplastics in an urban river network and suggests the potential of LDIR in the accurate quantitative analysis of microplastics in the environment.
Occurrence and fate of microplastic debris in middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River - From inland to the sea

Abstract:Based on field investigations and modeling estimates, rivers are considered an important route taken by microplastics to reach the sea. However, only a few studies have directly assessed occurrence and fate of microplastics in rivers. In this study, we surveyed the occurrence and fate of microplastic debris in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, which was estimated to be the largest riverine source of plastic debris to the sea. The abundance of microplastics at 15 sites along the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River ranged from 1.95 × 105 to 9.00 × 105 items/km2 with an average of 4.92 × 105 items/km2. The abundance of microplastics was positively correlated with the abundance of mesoplastics. Megacities, large riparian lakes, and seawater encroachment appeared to be main factors affecting the distribution of microplastics in the Yangtze River, while the deposition to benthic and riparian sediments likely led to observed decreases in microplastics in some sections of the river. The results of this study indicate that a considerable amount of microplastics generated in large river catchments are not transported to the sea and past modeling estimates of microplastic flux may contain biases. The flux of microplastics reaching the sea should be calculated based on long-term monitoring at the tidal limit of rivers. More importantly, the fate and effects of microplastics retained in the river system should receive more attention.

Abstract:Riverine outflow is one of the major pathways for microplastic transportation to coastal environments. Research on the output of microplastics in small- or medium-sized rivers will help accurately understand the status of their marine loads. In this study, we used both trawling and pumping methods to collect microplastics of different sizes in the Jiulong River Estuary and Xiamen Bay. We found that the abundance of small microplastics (44 μm–5.0 mm) was at least 20 times higher than the large particles (0.33–5.0 mm). The abundance of the large particles ranges from 4.96 to 16.3 particles/m 3 , and that of the small particles ranged from 82.8 to 918 particles/m 3 . Granule was the dominant shape (>60%), and polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) were the most common components. The riverine flux of small microplastics (44 μm–5 mm, 472 ± 230 t/y) was at a medium level and was eight times greater than that of large particles (0.33–5.0 mm, 61.2 ± 2.6 t/y). The behavior of the large microplastics was relatively conservative, whose abundance had a significant correlation with salinity ( R 2 = 0.927) and was mainly influenced by physical factors. In contrast, results of statistical analysis revealed that more complicated factors influenced the small microplastics.

Source Identification of Microplastics in Highly Urbanized River Environments and Its Implications for Watershed Management

Abstract:The extensive use of plastic products has resulted in a significant influx of microplastics into aquatic ecosystems, particularly in highly urbanized areas and their associated river environments. However, the specific pathways and quantities through which these microplastics enter the river environment are still unclear, which poses a challenge in developing effective measures to mitigate their sources. In this paper, the spatiotemporal variations of microplastics from different sources in highly urbanized rivers within the Shenzhen Bay watershed were investigated through field sampling, experimental and statistical analysis, and the measures of microplastic reduction were discussed. The observation results exhibited a negative logarithmic correlation between the abundance of microplastics in river water and monthly rainfall (R = 0.994, MSE = 0.051, p < 0.05). When the monthly rainfall was <6 mm, the abundance of microplastics was absolutely dependent on point sources. While the rainfall exceeded 470 mm, the abundance was absolutely predominantly influenced by nonpoint source microplastics. The annual load of microplastics from the watershed was 5.39 × 1012 items, of which 61.6 % originated from point sources. Among the microplastics from point sources, 92.1 % were derived from fibers generated by textile washing. Fragmented microplastics (41.9 %) were the most common type of microplastics from nonpoint sources, primarily originating from the disintegration and weathering of disposable plastics. In the future, there is an expectation to reduce the microplastic load in the watershed to 15.9 % of the total by improving sewage treatment processes and infrastructure. This study can provide scientific guidance for environmental planning and serve as a warning regarding the impact of microplastics on ecosystems in urbanized areas.

Abstract:We evaluated the ability of MRI using short T1 inversion recovery (STIR) to diagnose optic neuritis. Eleven patients with previous or recent attack of optic neuritis were studied with MRI at 0.5 tesla. STIR images revealed high signal regions in 7 of 12 symptomatic and 5 of 10 asymptomatic nerves. Three of five asymptomatic nerves with high intensity were pertinent to the cases with past attack and seemed to reflect the demyelinating change. The other two nerves were pertinent to the cases without past attack and seemed to show occult lesions. We consider that STIR is useful in detection of optic nerve lesions associated with optic neuritis.

Abstract:<p>Sediments have been found to be one of the most important reservoirs for microplastics, providing abundant indigenous microbes. The processes involved in the distribution and degradation behavior of microplastics are complex. This study investigated the vertical distribution of microplastics (with the size < 5 mm) and the bacterial community assemblages colonizing microplastics in urban river sediments at a depth from 0 to 50 cm. The results showed that both microplastics and associated microbial communities presented vertical profiles in river sediments. The mean concentration of microplastics increased from the shallow layers to the deep layers of sediments, and smaller microplastic particles were dominant in deeper layers. A greater degradation of microplastics in deeper layers was confirmed by contact angle measurements, scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy-attenuated total reflectance analyses. Unlike the surrounding sediments, the whole bacterial communities on microplastics exhibited higher frequency of positive correlations in the bacterial co-occurrence network, which indicated a less stability of bacterial communities on microplastics. The indicative plastic-degrading bacteria with an average abundance of 4.33% was found in the surrounding sediments, while on the microplastics 21.37% was found. From shallow layers to deep layers, the indicative plastic-degrading bacteria significantly increased both in the abundance and in their betweenness centrality in the co-occurrence network, which suggested a potentially primary role of these bacteria in the degradation of microplastics in deep layers. This study provides new insight into the vertical distribution and the potential microbial degrading characteristics of microplastics in urban river sediments, which expanded our understanding of the fate of microplastics in aquatic environments. The observed results implied a great risk that microplastics might become smaller and more in deepened sediments and finally migrate into groundwater.</p>

Abstract:Microplastics is an emerging environmental problem in the world. However, presence and fate of microplastics in seagrass meadows are barely known. In this study, the abundance and diversity of microplastic from Enhalus acodoides vegetated sites and bare sites were quantified and characterized in Xincun bay and Li'an bay, Hainan, China. Microplastics ranged from 80.0 to 884.5 particles per kg of dry sediment, and fibers were the dominant shape. The most frequent colors of microplastics were blue, transparent and black. The dominant size of microplastics was in the range of 125-250 mu m. And the seagrass sediments were enriched in microplastics 2.1 and 2.9 times for Xincun bay and Li'an bay, respectively. The trap effect of seagrass was non-selective regarding the shape, color and size of microplastics. High anthropogenic pollution and poor beach management may contribute to higher concentrations of microplastics in Li'an bay. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Benthic biofilms in riverine systems: A sink for microplastics and the underlying influences

Abstract:Rivers are known as major pathways for transporting microplastics from terrestrial areas to the marine environment. However, the behavior of microplastics in terms of retention and transport within riverine systems remains unclear. While considerable efforts have been made to investigate the water column and sediment, limited attention has been given to understanding the interplay between microplastics and benthic biofilms. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the distribution of biofilm-trapped microplastics along the CaoE River and identify the factors influencing the immobilization of microplastics by benthic biofilms. The findings of this study revealed that benthic biofilms served as a sink of microplastics in the CaoE River, with an average abundance of 575 items/m2 in tributaries and 894 items/m2 in the main stream. The dominant shape of microplastics was fiber, while the primary polymer type was polyethylene terephthalate. The distribution of microplastics exhibited significant spatial heterogeneity, as indicated by their abundance and characteristics. In order to reveal the intriguing phenomenon, variations of influencing factors were estimated, including physicochemical characteristics of water, extracellular polymeric substances of benthic biofilms, and microbial communities of benthic biofilms. A partial least squares path modeling analysis was performed using these variables, revealing that water velocity and microbial diversity of benthic biofilms were the key factors influencing the interaction between microplastics and benthic biofilms. In summary, this study provides substantial evidence confirming the crucial role of benthic biofilms in the immobilization of microplastics, which expands concerns about microplastic pollution in the riverine systems. Furthermore, uncovering the underlying influences of microplastic-biofilm interactions will facilitate the development of effective strategies for the control and management of microplastic pollution.
Quantifying microplastic stocks and flows in the urban agglomeration based on the mass balance model and source-pathway-receptor framework: Revealing the role of pollution sources, weather patterns, and environmental management practices

Abstract:Microplastics are widely present in global ecosystems, threatening both marine and freshwater species. Given this problem, it is vital to research where land-based microplastics originate and how they are transmitted to receiving waters in urban agglomerations. Research results should inform systemic mitigation efforts to prevent future contamination. This study established the multi-directional transmission network of a microplastic mass balance system using a source-pathway-receptor framework, and involving annual source stocks and pathway flows with considerable variations under dry and wet weather patterns. Details of a baseline scenario quantifying the occurrence and spread of microplastics in an urban agglomeration were also determined in the context of current environmental management practices. We demonstrated that the total stock of the six major pollution sources amounted to 5317.7 ± 2175.3 and 3320.1 ± 953.6 tons/a in dry and wet weather, respectively; and 2347.8 ± 766.9 and 1991.8 ± 701.8 tons/a flows directly entered the sewer system and receiving water in Shanghai, China, respectively. Prominent microplastic stocks were found in atmospheric fallout, industrial wastewater, and domestic sewage. These stocks were much higher compared to crop farming wastewater, aquacultural wastewater, and livestock and poultry breeding wastewater. Total microplastic flows entering receiving water reached 3207.4 ± 1071.6 tons/a; the largest contributions were from wet weather overflow (23.7%), direct atmospheric fallout (21.7%), wastewater treatment plant effluent (14.2%), industrial wastewater (14.1%), and surface runoff (10.4%). Weather patterns led to divergent microplastic transmission pathways and mass flows, revealing a lagging timeline mode and illustrating the basic spatiotemporal features of microplastic contamination in urban agglomerations. Terminal disposal practices retained about two-fifths of the microplastic flows that would have otherwise been transmitted into receiving water. Of these, land surface sweep contributed half of the retained flow. Improvements in WWTP removal efficiency, storm sewage interception rate, industrial wastewater collection rate, and sewer sediment dredge rate could further enhance the systemic benefits.

Abstract:This study proposed and experimentally demonstrated a high-speed long-distance underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) system using a 520 nm green laser diode (LD) with non-return-to-zero on-off keying (NRZ-OOK) modulation scheme. The UOWC link offers maximum data rates up to 4.60 Gbps, 3.93 Gbps, 3.48 Gbps and 2.70 Gbps over the underwater distances of 2.3 m, 11.5 m, 20.7 m and 34.5 m with the bit-error rates below the forward error correction (FEC) criterion of 3.8 χ 10−3. To the best of our knowledge, UOWC data rate of 2.70 Gbps at 34.5 m is the highest at present.
Quantifying annual microplastic emissions of an urban catchment: Surface runoff vs wastewater sources

Abstract:Urban clusters are recognized as hotspots of microplastic pollution, and the associated urban rivers convey microplastics into the global oceans. Despite this knowledge, the relative contributions of various sources to the annual microplastic emissions from urban catchments remain scarcely quantified. Here, we quantified microplastic emissions from a riverine urban catchment in Japan. The total microplastics (size range: 10–5000 μm) released from the catchment amounted to 269.1 tons/annum, of which 78.1% is contributed by surface runoff and other uncontrolled emissions (UCE), and 21.1% emerges from the regulated wastewater (controlled emissions; CE), implying that approximately one-fifth is intercepted and removed by the wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). This further indicated higher microplastic pollution by unmanaged surface runoff compared to untreated wastewater. In the dry season, WWTPs contributed significantly to the reduction of total microplastic emissions (95%) compared to wet periods (8%). On an annual scale, the treated effluent occupies only 0.1% of the total microplastics released to the river network (212.4 tons/annum), while the remaining portion is dominated by UCE, i.e., primarily surface runoff emissions (98.9%), and trivially by the background microplastic inputs that are potentially derived through atmospheric depositions in dry days (1.0%). It was shown that moderate and heavy rainfall events which occur during 18% of the year (within the context of Japan), leading to 95% of the annual microplastic emissions, are crucial for pollution control of urban rivers. Furthermore, our study demonstrated that surface area-normalized microplastic emissions from an urban catchment (∼0.8 tons/km 2 /annum) is globally relevant, especially for planning microplastic interventions for developed cities.

Abstract:Urban drainage system is an important channel for terrigenous microplastics (<5 mm in size) to migrate to urban water bodies, especially the input load caused by overflow pollution in wet weather. Investigating how they transport and discharge is essential to better understand the occurrence and variability of microplastics in different water ecosystems. This study evaluated the abundance and distribution characteristics of microplastics in the drainage systems of typical coastal cities in China. The impacts of meteorological conditions and land use were explored. In particular, the prominent contribution of drainage sewer overflow pollution during storm events were investigated. The results showed that the microplastics abundance in daily sewage discharge from different drainage plots ranged between 13.6 and 30.8 items/L, with fibers as the dominant type of microplastics. Sewer overflow discharge can greatly aggravate microplastic abundance to 83.1 ± 40.2 items/L. Road runoff and sewer sediment scouring were the main pollution sources. Systematic estimates based on detailed data showed that the average microplastics emitted per capita per day in household wastewater was 3461.5 items. A quantitative estimation method was proposed to show that the annual emissions load of microplastics via urban drainage system in this research area was 5.83×1010 items/km2, of which the proportion of emissions in wet weather accounted for about 60%. This research provides the first full-process of assessment and source apportionment of the microplastic distribution characteristics in old drainage system. The occurrence of storm events is an important marker of increased microplastic abundance in urban rivers, with a view to urgent need for interception of surface runoff and purification of sewer overflow pollution.

Abstract:Rivers are crucial channels for microplastic (MP) transport from land to water environments, underscoring the importance of studying the distribution characteristics and pollution risk levels of MPs in river water and sediment. In this study, the abundance, shape, size, color, and polymer type of MPs in water and sediment in the Yitong River were determined. The results showed that MP abundance was higher in the rainy season than in the dry period, with urban sections generally exhibiting higher MP abundance than rural areas. The MPs were predominantly fibrous, ranging from 0.05 to 1 mm in size, and primarily black and transparent in color. Eleven polymer types were identified, with polyethylene (37.27 %), polypropylene (29.09 %), and polystyrene (12.73 %) being the top three. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that the surface of MPs was rough, with varying degrees of holes and cracks, facilitating the attachment of other pollutants. The assessment of MP pollution based on the pollution load index (PLI) method indicated slight MP pollution, with a PLI value of <10 for the water body and <1 for the sediment. The assessment of the distribution characteristics and pollution levels of MPs establishes a foundation for the comprehensive analysis of MP pollution. It offers valuable guidance for managing MP pollution in the Yitong River and provides basic data for assessing the distribution characteristics and pollution risks in mid-temperate urban rivers.

Abstract:Rivers have been recognized as major transport pathways for microplastics into the sea but large-scale quantitative data on the environmental fate of riverine microplastics remains limited, hindering proper risk assessment and development of regulatory measures. Microplastics in the whole Yangtze River Basin of China were systematically investigated by sampling the water, sediment, and soil. Microplastics were detected in all samples, with an average abundance of 1.27 items/L, 286.20 items/kg, and 338.09 items/kg for water, sediments, and soils, respectively, with polypropylene and polyethylene being the most abundant polymers. A generally increasing trend of microplastic abundance from upstream to downstream was identified, which were co-attributed by geographical and anthropogenic factors including elevation, longitude, distance from the nearest city, population density, urbanization rate, and land use. Microplastics in the sediments showed more prominent vertical migration than those in the soils, and the density and size of microplastics may be the key factors governing the migration of microplastics across different compartments. Community analysis showed that microplastics in different compartments were significantly different and highly correlated with geographical distance. Major cities at the middle and lower reaches were considered pivotal nodes of microplastic pollution in the Yangtze River Basin. Policy recommendations were also proposed towards better remediation of microplastic pollution involving riverine systems.

Abstract:Freshwater systems serve as important sources and transportation routes for marine microplastic pollution, and inadequate attention has been paid to this situation. Data on microplastic pollution of typical seagoing rivers in northern China are lacking. In the current study, we investigated the distribution and characteristics of microplastics in the main stream of the Haihe River, which flows through a metropolis with a high population density and level of industrialization and then flows into the Bohai Sea. The microplastic samples were collected by manta trawls with pore sizes of 333 mm, and the microplastic concentrations ranged from 0.69 to 74.95 items/m(3). Fibers dominated in the surface water of the Haihe River; their shapes that were categorized as fibers, film, foam, fragments, and spheres, and contributed 17.4-86.7% of the total microplastics studied. The size distribution of the microplastics was concentrated in a range of 100-1000 mu m, with 54.7% of the total sizes corresponding to the 333-mu m trawl. Micro-Fourier transform infrared (mu-FT-IR) spectra showed that the main components were polyethylene, poly(ethylene-propylene) copolymer, and polypropylene. Scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) measurements revealed scratches, micropores, and cracks on the surfaces of the microplastics due to mechanical friction, chemical oxidation and degradation processes. The results of this study confirmed the high abundance and high diversity of microplastics in an urban river and indicated appreciable impacts from point-source inputs on the microplastic pollution, such as effluents from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Abstract:<p>Municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are known to be important point sources of microplastic pollution in the environment because they discharge large volumes of microplastic-containing effluents into nearby rivers. However, the fate of these microplastics once they enter the urban rivers is not well understood. The present study focused on the Qing River, a typical urban river in Beijing that receives effluents from four nearby WWTPs. We investigated the microplastic pollution profile both at the effluent outfalls from the WWTPs and in the river. Using micro Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, we identified and confirmed a total of 18 polymers from the river and effluent outfalls. The microplastics were then separated into four categories based on their shapes with the fragment group being the most abundant, followed by the fiber, film, and pellet groups. Abundance of microplastics was found to be slightly higher in the main body of the Qing River when sampled in November than in July. However, abundance levels from the effluent outfalls were similar in November and in July. Significant amounts of microplastics in the Qing river, up to 80%, were retained upstream of dams that are used for water storage. This result was also confirmed by a decrease in the polymer-diversity index downstream of the dams compared to upstream. A preliminary conclusion could be drawn that the microplastics in the Qing River are mainly released from the WWTPs and that most of these microplastics are retained in the river by dams.</p>

Abstract:Microplastics in freshwater ecosystems have gained attention for their potential impact on biodiversity. Rivers are complex and dynamic ecosystems that transport particles and organic matter from the headwaters through watersheds to the ocean. Changes in land use and the presence of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) increase the risk of plastic contamination. Simultaneously, hydromorphological features of the watershed can influence the dispersion and retention of microplastics. This study assesses the impact of urban land uses and river hydromorphology on microplastic abundance and spatial distribution in two watersheds with contrasting land uses. Unexpectedly, our findings show that microplastics were widespread throughout watersheds both in water (3.5 ± 3.3 particles/L) and sediments (56.9 ± 39.9 particles/g). The concentration of microplastics in sediments significantly increased in granulometry ranging from 0.5 to 1 mm. Microplastics in running waters are significantly correlated with increasing urban land use coverage. However, the presence and distance of WWTPs did not affect microplastic distribution. In conclusion, contrasting patterns were observed for suspended and sedimented microplastic particles: suspended microplastics were associated with an anthropogenic effect, whereas the concentration of microplastics in sediments was determined by riverbed granulometry. Our results suggest that the interaction of anthropogenic and environmental factors shapes microplastic distribution along the rivers and their subsequent transport toward the coastal ocean. Finally, a review of the current literature reveals the absence of standardization in field and laboratory assessment techniques and measurement units, representing a challenge for intercomparisons of river microplastic studies.

Abstract:Microplastic pollution has been considered as a global environmental issue that potentially threatens human health. However, research about microplastic pollution in urban rivers is still insufficient. This study analyzed the abundance and distribution of microplastics in surface water of the Nanfei River in Hefei, China. Microplastic concentrations ranged from 0.8 to 27 items/L along the studied river. The small size (50–333 μm) (47.58–84.89%) and white (55.65–88.89%) were predominant among all samples, except that collected from the source reach. Pellet was a typical and abundant microplastic type and accounted for 60.30%. PE and PP were the major polymers, occupying 55.24% and 22.86%, respectively. The results showed that traditional environmental management practices including salvaging surface garbage regularly and setting wooden suspended crossbars at tributary confluences could significantly mitigate the pollution degree of microplastics. The polymer risk index was calculated to describe the potential risk of microplastics, and the pollution level was still at high risk under various management practices. This study provides a valuable finding for future research on microplastics in urban city rivers, which may improve the knowledge that how to control and prevent microplastic pollution.
