Abstract:Optical singularity is pivotal in nature and has attracted wide interest from many disciplines nowadays, including optical communication, quantum optics, and biomedical imaging. Visualizing vortex lines formed by phase singularities and fabricating chiral nanostructures using the evolution of vortex lines are of great significance. In this paper, we introduce a promising method based on two-photon polymerization direct laser writing (2PP-DLW) to record the morphology of vortex lines generated by tightly focused multi-vortex beams (MVBs) at the nanoscale. Due to Gouy phase, the singularities of the MVBs rotate around the optical axis and move towards each other when approaching the focal plane. The propagation dynamics of vortex lines are recorded by 2PP-DLW, which explicitly exhibits the evolution of the phase singularities. Additionally, the MVBs are employed to fabricate stable three-dimensional chiral nanostructures due to the spiral-forward property of the vortex line. Because of the obvious chiral features of the manufactured nanostructures, a strong vortical dichroism is observed when excited by the light carrying orbital angular momentum. A number of applications can be envisioned with these chiral nanostructures, such as optical sensing, chiral separation, and information storage.

Abstract:Stable oscillations of optical vortices and acoustic modes in a Brillouin laser are demonstrated for the first time based on chiral photonic crystal fiber, which robustly supports helical Bloch modes that carry circularly polarized optical vortex and display circular birefringence. Topology‐selective stimulated Brillouin scattering effect dictates that the lasing vortex modes can be externally selected by pumping the appropriate mode. Optical vortices, which have been extensively studied over the last decades, offer an additional degree of freedom useful in many applications, such as optical tweezers and quantum control. Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS), providing a narrow linewidth and a strong nonlinear response, has been used to realize quasi‐continuous wave lasers. Here, stable oscillation of optical vortices and acoustic modes in a Brillouin laser based on chiral photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is reported, which robustly supports helical Bloch modes (HBMs) that carry circularly polarized optical vortex and display circular birefringence. A narrow‐linewidth Brillouin fiber laser that stably emits 1st‐ and 2nd‐order vortex‐carrying HBMs is implemented. Angular momentum conservation selection rules dictate that pump and backward Brillouin signals have opposite topological charge and spin. Additionally, it is shown that when the chiral PCF is placed within a laser ring cavity, the linewidth‐narrowing associated with lasing permits the peak of the Brillouin gain that corresponds to acoustic mode to be measured with resolution of 10 kHz and accuracy of 520 kHz. The results pave the way to a new generation of vortex‐carrying SBS systems with applications in optical tweezers, quantum information processing, and vortex‐carrying nonreciprocal systems.

Abstract:Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) has many applications; for example, in sensing, microwave photonics, and signal processing. Here, we report the first experimental study of SBS in chiral photonic crystal fiber (PCF), which displays optical activity and robustly maintains circular polarization states against external perturbations. As a result, circularly polarized pump light is cleanly backscattered into a Stokes signal with the orthogonal circular polarization state, as is required by angular momentum conservation. By comparison, untwisted PCF generates a Stokes signal with an unpredictable polarization state, owing to its high sensitivity to external perturbations. We use chiral PCF to realize a circularly polarized continuous-wave Brillouin laser. The results pave the way for a new generation of stable circularly polarized SBS systems with applications in quantum manipulation, optical tweezers, optical gyroscopes, and fiber sensors. © 2022 Chinese Laser Press

Frequency conversion of vortex states by chiral forward Brillouin scattering in twisted photonic crystal fibre

Abstract:Optical vortex states-higher optical modes with helical phase progression and carrying orbital angular momentum-have been explored to increase the flexibility and capacity of optical fibres employed for example in mode-division-multiplexing, optical trapping and multimode imaging. A common requirement in such systems is high fidelity transfer of signals between different frequency bands and modes, which for vortex modes is not so straightforward. Here we report intervortex conversion between backward-propagating circularly polarised vortex modes at one wavelength, using chiral flexural phonons excited by chiral forward stimulated Brillouin scattering at a different wavelength. The experiment is carried out using chiral photonic crystal fibre, which robustly preserves circular polarisation states. The chiral acoustic wave, which has the geometry of a spinning single-spiral corkscrew, provides the orbital angular momentum necessary to conserve angular momentum between the coupled optical vortex modes. The results open up new opportunities for interband optical frequency conversion and the manipulation of vortex states in both classical and quantum regimes.

Abstract:Optical vortices, which are beams with helical wavefronts and spiral phase mismatches, have garnered considerable attention in various fields. In this study, we theoretically proposed and experimentally implemented a simple method for generating first-order optical vortices. To generate first-order vortex beams using the polarization field in the momentum space of photonic crystal slabs, topological half charges are required. We propose a method to divide the polarization vortex in the momentum space by breaking symmetry, which results in Dirac points or circularly polarized points. This approach enables the transformation of topological integer charges into topological half-integer charges, thereby facilitating the generation of first-order vortex beams. This approach extends the application of bound states in continuum and topological photonics.
Chiral emission of vortex microlasers enabled by collective modes of guided resonances

Abstract:Vortex lasers have attracted substantial attention in recent years owing to their wide array of applications such as micromanipulation, optical multiplexing, and quantum cryptography. In this work, we propose and demonstrate chiral emission of vortex microlaser leveraging the collective modes from omnidirectionally hybridizing the guided mode resonances (GMRs) within photonic crystal (PhC) slabs. Specifically, we encircle a central uniform PhC with a heterogeneous PhC that features a circular lateral boundary. Consequently, the bulk GMRs hybridize into a series of collective modes due to boundary scatterings, resulting in a vortex pattern in real space with a spiral phase front in its radiation. Benefiting from the long lifetime of GMRs as quasi-bound state in the continuum and using asymmetric pumping to lift the chiral symmetry, we demonstrate stable single-mode lasing oscillation with a low optical pumping threshold of $18~\mathrm{kW/cm^2}$ at room temperature. We identify the real-space vortex through polarization-resolved imaging and self-interference patterns, showing a vivid example of applying collective modes to realize compact and energy-efficient vortex microlasers.

Robust excitation and Raman conversion of guided vortices in chiral gas-filled photonic crystal fiber

Abstract:The unique ring-shaped intensity patterns and helical phase fronts of optical vortices make them useful in many applications. Here we report for the first time efficient Raman frequency conversion between vortex modes in twisted hydrogen-filled single-ring hollow core photonic crystal fiber (SR-PCF). High fidelity transmission of optical vortices in untwisted SR-PCF becomes more and more difficult as the orbital angular momentum (OAM) order increases, due to scattering at structural imperfections in the fiber microstructure. In helically twisted SR-PCF, however, the degeneracy between left- and right-handed versions of the same mode is lifted, with the result that they are topologically protected from such scattering. With launch efficiencies of ~75%, a high damage threshold and broadband guidance, these fibers are ideal for performing nonlinear experiments that require the polarization state and azimuthal order of the interacting modes to be preserved over long distances. Vortex coherence waves (VCW) of internal molecular motion, carrying angular momentum, are excited in the gas, permitting the polarization and orbital angular momentum of the Raman bands to be tailored, even in spectral regions where conventional solid-core waveguides are opaque or susceptible to optical damage.

Abstract:We demonstrate optical polarization vortex generation in a photonic-crystal fiber (PCF) by means of a CO(2) laser-induced long period grating. Vortices are a special subclass of fiber modes that result in polarization-insensitive resonances even when grating perturbations are asymmetric, as is the case with structural perturbations in single-material PCFs. The physics of vortex generation, combined with the use of structural perturbations alone, in single-material fibers, opens up a new schematic for realizing harsh-environment sensors. We show that the temperature and polarization stability of our vortex devices is maintained for prolonged periods of time (tested up to 34 h) at temperatures exceeding 1000 °C. We envisage that this demonstration opens up a new way of realizing high-temperature sensors in a cost-effective manner.

Abstract:Supercontinuum (SC) generation in solid-core photonic crystal fibres (PCFs) is well established and has diverse applications in science and technology. In a conventional SC, the polarization state is not maintained over the whole spectrum due to cross-phase modulation and may in addition vary with power. Recently, it has been reported that continuously twisted PCFs exhibit circular birefringence [3,4]. Here we report the first experimental demonstration of a twisted PCF that robustly maintains circular polarization state across the whole spectrum, independent of power.

Abstract:It has been an important research subject to find new nonlinear optical phenomena. In this paper, we report the experimental observation of stochastic, periodic, and localized light structures in a super long single-mode standard fiber with external optical feedback provided by the fiber end. The end facet reflection provides an analogous Fabry-Perot stimulated Brillouin resonator cavity. By increasing the pump power to exceed stimulated Brillouin scattering threshold, we observed light structures exhibiting extremely rich temporal pulse characteristics that had never been reported in literature before, including supercontinuum background generation, the localization of periodic optical structure formation, fission, and compression. These optical structures, are of period-doubling distribution and have different recurrence rates. What is more interesting is that we have observed sets of low frequency bipolar cycle-pulse trains that is often seen in the electrical field and hardly seen in pure optical system. Real-time specification of dynamical temporal regimes of laser operation may bring new insight into rich underlying nonlinear physics of practical fiber cavity systems. Therefore, some new nonlinear optical phenomena have been observed.
Polarization-Tailored Raman Frequency Conversion in Chiral Gas-Filled Hollow Core Photonic Crystal Fibers

Abstract:Broadband-tunable sources of circularly-polarized light are crucial in fields such as laser science, biomedicine and spectroscopy. Conventional sources rely on nonlinear wavelength conversion and polarization control using standard optical components, and are limited by the availability of suitably transparent crystals and glasses. Although gas-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber provides pressure-tunable dispersion, long well-controlled optical path-lengths, and high Raman conversion efficiency, it is unable to preserve circular polarization state, typically exhibiting weak linear birefringence. Here we report a revolutionary approach based on helically-twisted hollow-core photonic crystal fiber, which displays circular birefringence, thus robustly maintaining circular polarization state against external perturbations. This makes it possible to generate pure circularly-polarized Stokes and anti-Stokes signals by rotational Raman scattering in hydrogen. The polarization state of the frequency-shifted Raman bands can be continuously varied by tuning the gas pressure in the vicinity of the gain suppression point. The results pave the way to a new generation of compact and efficient fiber-based sources of broadband light with fully-controllable polarization state.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the process of fiber vortex modes generation using chiral periodic structures that include both chiral optical fibers and chiral (vortex) fiber Bragg gratings (ChFBGs). A generalized theoretical model of the ChFBG is developed including an arbitrary function of apodization and chirping, which provides a way to calculate gratings that generate vortex modes with a given state for the required frequency band and reflection coefficient. In addition, a matrix method for describing the ChFBG is proposed, based on the mathematical apparatus of the coupled modes theory and scattering matrices. Simulation modeling of the fiber structures considered is carried out. Chiral optical fibers maintaining optical vortex propagation are also described. It is also proposed to use chiral fiber-optic periodic structures as sensors of physical fields (temperature, strain, etc.), which can be applied to address multi-sensor monitoring systems due to a unique address parameter-the orbital angular momentum of optical radiation.

Abstract:We report a hybrid waveguide-grating vortex laser emitter processed based on femtosecond laser direct writing of the Nd:YVO4 crystal. The cladding waveguide together with the fork grating features both excellent single-mode guidance and vortex diffraction properties. The confocal micro-Raman characterization results reveal the mechanism of the periodic refractive index modulation of the fork grating. Vortex lasers at the milliwatt level are achieved at a wavelength of 1064.7 nm under optical pump laser at 809.3 nm. The numerical simulation of the near-field diffraction propagation demonstrates the generation process of the vortex beams. Our results suggest that the waveguide-grating configuration is of great potential for optical-field steering applications in integrated photonics.

Abstract:Spatiotemporal optical vortices (STOVs) with swirling phase singularities in space and time hold great promise for a wide range of applications across diverse fields. However, current approaches to generate STOVs lack integrability and rely on bulky free-space optical components. Here, we demonstrate routine STOV generation by harnessing the topological darkness phenomenon of a photonic crystal slab. Complete polarization conversion enforced by symmetry enables topological darkness to arise from photonic bands of guided resonances, imprinting vortex singularities onto an ultrashort reflected pulse. Utilizing time-resolved spatial mapping, we provide the first observation of STOV generation using a photonic crystal slab, revealing the imprinted STOV structure manifested as a curved vortex line in the pulse profile in space and time. Our work establishes photonic crystal slabs as a versatile and accessible platform for engineering STOVs and harnessing the topological darkness in nanophotonics.

Abstract:Novel evolution dynamics of optical vortices propagating in a dual-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is investigated, which can be explained well by using the equivalent dipole mode superposition principle. Thanks to the coupling between the two cores of PCF, exciting vorticity splitting and topological charge-flipping are achieved by inducing a vortex beam into one of the two cores of the PCF. What is more, the evolutions of two vortices located in each core separately can be controlled by means of modulating the initial phase difference of them. Our results may offer possibilities for applications of optical vortices, orbital angular momentum modulations, as well as optical communications.

Abstract:An experimental setup was established by using a high stability, narrow line bandwidth fiber laser with a fiber optic amplifier, polarization maintaining fiber coupler with split ratio of 50:50 and 95:5 respectively, a fiber optic sensing coil with high birefringence large nonlinear polarization maintaining fiber, and uniform fiber Bragg grating that was used at output port for filtering the excess pumping component. Based on this experimental setup, the threshold power of the pumping laser was deduced, and the relationship of the spectra and intensity between pumping laser component and stokes component with frequency downshift was obtained experimentally.

Abstract:In optical fibers, stimulated Brillouin scattering are usually investigated in the regime of resonance. Whereas, in this paper, we discover for the first time that, without participation of Kerr effect, frequency detuning from resonance can give rise to rich dynamical behaviors for stimulated Brillouin scattering in optical fibers. Distinct from the dynamics presented in the conventional Brillouin lasers, this kind of phenomena does not need external feedback at all but also presents a variety of classifiable dynamical features for continuous-wave pumping, including steady state, periodic state and chaos. We analyze that the main mechanisms responsible for these dynamical behaviors include the transient response of acoustic wave, relaxation oscillation, frequency mixing effect induced by three-wave coherent coupling and Brillouin gain-induced group velocity change. Moreover, it should be pointed that it is the first time to discover in theory that there exists the frequency mixing effect induced by three-wave coherent coupling in the regime of non-resonance for the stimulated Brillouin scattering process, which as a consequence determines the periodic state.
Spin-Polarization-Induced Chiral Polariton Lasing at Room Temperature

Abstract:Exciton-polaritons are hybrid bosons that define the peculiar interaction between the semiconductor and the optical cavity. The ultra-low effective mass of polariton inherited from its photon fraction benefits the efficient Bose–Einstein condensation process. Due to the unique superfluidity of polariton condensate, the persistent angular momentum of the system will facilitate plenty of chiral phenomena, such as the spin precession, the spin–orbit coupling, and the emergence of quantum vortices. Here, we report a chiral polariton laser via robust spin-polarization of polariton condensation at room temperature. The self-formed chirality of the microcavity breaks the spatial inversion symmetry and lifts the energy degeneracy of polariton spin doublets by a considerable value of 11 meV, which can be demonstrated by the angle-resolved spectra recorded after a Wollaston prism. The bosonic condensation only occurs in the low-energy spin-up polaritons, resulting in polariton lasing with stable right-circular (σ+) polarization. The second-order coherence of a polariton chiral laser is determined by performing the Hanbury Brown–Twiss measurement, which indicates the quantum phase transition during the condensation process. Moreover, the robustness of the chirality of polariton lasing is demonstrated, and the basic physical mechanisms of the system are illustrated by the generalized Gross–Pitaevskii (G–P) equation. The results set solid building blocks for the development of chiral quantum photonics and spin polaritonics.

Visualization of Photonic Band Structures via Far-field Measurements in SiNx Photonic Crystal Slabs

Abstract:The band structures of the photonic crystal slabs play a significant role in manipulating the flow of light and pre-dicting exotic physics in photonics. In this letter, we show that the key features of photonic band structures can be achieved experimentally by the polarization- and momentum-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy utilizing the light emission properties of SiNx. The two-dimensional spectra clearly reveal the energy-momentum dispersion of band structures which is in perfect agreement with the simulation results. The isofrequency contours can be measured easily by adding a bandpass filter with a desired photon energy. Furthermore, it is convenient to observe clearly and directly the optical singularity -- the optical bound states in the continuum featured by dark point in three-dimensional photoluminescence spectra. The polarization-resolved isofrequency contours clearly show that this dark point is the center of an azimuthally polarized vortex. Finally, the helical topological edge states can be easily observed in photonic topological insulators with deformed hexagonal lattices. Our work provides a simple and effective approach for exploring topological photonics and other intriguing phenomena hidden in the photonic crystal slabs.

Abstract:Vortex crystals are geometric arrays of vortices found in various physics fields, owing their regular internal structure to mutual interactions within a spatially confined system. In optics, vortex crystals may form spontaneously within a nonlinear resonator but their usefulness is limited by the lack of control over their topology. On the other hand, programmable devices used in free space, like spatial light modulators, allow the design of nearly arbitrary vortex distributions but without any intrinsic dynamics. By combining non-Hermitian optics with on-demand topological transformations enabled by metasurfaces, we report a solid-state laser that generates vortex crystals with mutual interactions and actively-tunable topologies. We demonstrate 10x10 coherent vortex arrays with nonlocal coupling networks that are not limited to nearest-neighbor coupling but rather dictated by the crystal's topology. The vortex crystals exhibit sharp Bragg diffraction peaks, witnessing their coherence and high topological charge purity, which we resolve spatially over the whole lattice by introducing a parallelized analysis technique. By structuring light at the source, we enable complex transformations that allow to arbitrarily partition the orbital angular momentum inside the cavity and to heal topological charge defects, making these resonators a robust and versatile tool for advanced applications in topological optics.

Optical Vortex Brillouin Laser in Chiral Photonic Crystal Fiber
