Abstract:A series of Au/C nano-catalyst were prepared with sol-immobilization(SI) method and characterized under Transmission Electron Microscopy(TEM).The performance of the catalyst was evaluated on the oxidation reaction of glucose to sodium gluconate in alkaline solutions with oxygen as the oxidant under atmospheric pressure at various operating conditions.The results show that 1.0% Au/C SI prepared catalyst with less than 2 nm uniformly distributed gold nanoparticles has the best reaction performance.A preferred set of reaction condition is: 50 ℃,pH 9.5,the oxygen flow rate of 40 mL/min,catalyst 0.22 g,glucose concentration in the aqueous solution of 7.5%.At 1 h reaction time,both the glucose conversion and sodium gluconate selectivity are about 100%,and reaction turnover frequency(TOF) is up to 1 560 h-1.The above studies indicate that,SI method can make Au/C catalyst with a certain size of gold nanoparticles;the prepared catalyst has high activity and high selectivity,resulting in a short reaction time in heterogeneous reactions..

Abstract:Gold-catalyzed oxidative esterification of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) under basic conditions is a promising process to produce dimethyl-2,5-furan dicarboxylate (DMFD). However, it has been overlooked that the DMFD readily hydrolyzes in the presence of soluble bases. Herein, we report solid base-supported gold catalysts for the base-free conversion of HMF. The catalysts' basic sites (BSs) were found to facilitate the esterification of aldehydes and oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes. Moreover, the properties of the BSs strongly influenced the catalyst performance, as excessive and insufficient BS strengths resulted in extensive hydrolysis of the DMFD and low catalytic activity, respectively. A larger quantity of BSs is beneficial for complete conversion of the reaction intermediate. The hydrotalcite (HT)-supported catalyst of Au/HT-0.2 possesses a large quantity and moderate strength of BSs, therefore providing an excellent DMFD yield of 94.5%. Our results reveal for the first time the issue of DMFD hydrolysis in gold-catalyzed oxidative esterification of HMF. Replacement of a soluble base by a solid base-supported catalyst to enhance product stability provides insights for similar reactions.
Glucose Oxidation over Au/TS-1 Catalyst

Abstract:Aiming at the disadvantages of long cycle,low selectivity and high level control of temperature in the production of sodium gluconate by traditional biological fermentation method,Au/TS-1 nano catalysts were prepared by three kinds of method and characterized by surface area and pore volume using nitrogen adsorption using BET method,X-ray diffraction(XRD) and transmission electron microscopy(TEM).The catalytic performance of the catalysts used in oxidation of glucose to sodium gluconate using oxygen as an oxidant was evaluated,and effects of reaction conditions were investigated.The results showed that the Au/TS-1 catalyst with gold mass fraction of 4% prepared by deposition precipitation(DP) method was the best catalyst with the uniform nano gold mean particle size of 10-20 nm,and the optimum reaction conditions were at 60 ℃,pH of 9.5,oxygen flowrate of 40 mL/min,catalyst weight of 0.18 g,and glucose mass fraction of 5%,at which the glucose conversion of 100% and the sodium gluconate selectivity of 100% could be obtained at 23 min,but the catalytic activity was decreased rapidly after the fourth reuse.It is concluded that the heterogeneous Au/TS-1 catalysts prepared by DP method with a given size of nano gold particle show advantages of short cycle,high activity and good selectivity,but their stability needs to be improved.
Aerobic Oxidation of D-Glucose on Support-Free Nanoporous Gold

Abstract:Nanoporous gold (NPG) catalysts, made by dealloying Ag/Au alloys, were found to be novel unsupported Au nanocatalysts that exhibited effective catalytic activity and high selectivity (similar to 99%) for the aerobic oxidation Of D-glucose to D-gluconic acid under mild conditions. Systematic studies have been carried out to discuss this new catalytic system, including the activity dependence as functions of pH value, temperature and NPG ligament size, reaction active sites, and reaction kinetics. The possible contribution from the residual Ag atoms trapped in the NPG ligaments was also discussed, which turned out to be unfavorable for the glucose oxidation. The unexpected observation of the catalytic activity from NPG with a ligament size as large as 60 nm indicated that the low-coordinated surface Au atoms should be the reaction active sites for glucose oxidation.

Abstract:Supported gold nanoparticles are widely used active oxidation catalysts, however, their efficiency and stability vastly depend on the type of supports utilized. This study aims to unravel the potential application of cerium(III) phosphate as a new support for gold catalysts for selective oxidation of glucose under base-free conditions. Particular interest was directed to: i) the identification of the key factors that promote high activity of supported gold species, ii) the optimization of reaction conditions to assess the impact of catalyst loading and reaction time/temperature on the efficiency of glucose oxidation, and iii) the elucidation of the stability of Au/CePO 4 catalyst in several reaction cycles. The results show that Au/CePO 4 exhibits unique surface properties that enable obtaining of much higher activity of gold species in glucose oxidation compared to other well-known metal oxide-based systems. Precisely, it was found that the TOF value calculated for Au/CePO 4 was ca. 2.5 times higher than in the case of Au/CeO 2 (TOF = 5846 vs. 2309 h −1 , respectively), and ca. 1.5 times higher than that observed for Au/TiO 2 (Mintek, TOF = 3839 h −1 ). The presented results facilitate the development of more active and highly selective supported gold catalysts for oxidation of biomass-derived platform molecules (e.g., glucose).

Abstract:The selective conversion of cellulose to gluconic acid under mild conditions is challenging as it has abundant intra‐and inter‐molecular hydrogen bonds that protect the β‐1,4‐glycosidic bonds and make it intrinsically recalcitrant to depolymerize. Au‐Pd/TiO2 and Au‐Pt/TiO2 catalysts prepared by sol immobilization method without pre‐treatment are active and selective for the oxidation of glucose and cellobiose to gluconic acid under base‐free conditions. Important preparation parameters are the pre‐treatment of the catalyst and the metal ratio. The optimized catalyst provided a good yield of gluconic acid from cellobiose and has opened up a new catalyst system for cellobiose conversion in terms of a heterogeneous catalyst. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry

Base-free selective oxidation of monosaccharide into sugar acid by surface-functionalized carbon nanotube composites

Abstract:Selective oxidation of biomass-derived monosaccharide into high value-added chemicals is highly desirable from sustainability perspectives. Herein, we demonstrate a surface-functionalized carbon nanotube-supported gold (Au/CNT-O and Au/CNT-N) catalyst for base-free oxidation of monosaccharide into sugar acid. Au/CNT-O and Au/CNT-N surfaces successfully introduced oxygen- and nitrogen-containing functional groups, respectively. The highest yields of gluconic acid and xylonic acid were 93.3% and 94.3%, respectively, using Au/CNT-N at 90°C for 240 min, which is higher than that of using Au/CNT-O. The rate constants for monosaccharide decomposition and sugar acid formation in Au/CNT-N system were higher, while the corresponding activation energy was lower than in Au/CNT-O system. DFT calculation revealed that the mechanism of glucose oxidation to gluconic acid involves the adsorption and activation of O2, adsorption of glucose, dissociation of the formyl C−H bond and formation of O−H bond, and formation and desorption of gluconic acid. The activation energy barrier for the glucose oxidation over Au/CNT-N is lower than that of Au/CNT-O. The nitrogen-containing functional groups are more beneficial for accelerating monosaccharide oxidation and enhancing sugar acid selectivity than oxygen-containing functional groups. This work presents a useful guidance for designing and developing highly active catalysts for producing high-value-added chemicals from biomass.

Abstract:ZrO2 supported AuPt catalysts are very selective and stable for the oxidation of glucose to glucaric acid under base‐free conditions. The method of preparation affect the formation of AuPt alloy which favors glucaric acid. The use of ultrasonication during impregnation increases the final yield of glucaric acid, up to 71 %. Selective catalytic oxidation of glucose to glucaric acid is still challenging due to the potential formation of a large range of by‐products. ZrO2 supported AuPt catalysts are very efficient for this reaction under base‐free conditions, in aqueous phase. Different preparation methods were tested and the catalysts synthesized by co‐impregnation using NaBH4 as reductant gave the most promising results. We demonstrated that the presence of a pure AuPt alloy is critical for the selective formation of glucaric acid. We have shown that when ultrasonication was used during preparation, less by‐products were formed, increasing significantly final yield of glucaric acid, up to 71 %. The Au/Pt ratio affects the catalytic results and an optimal ratio around 1.1 was determined. Finally, the catalyst is stable up to 196 h in continuous reactor.

Abstract:According to the problems of complexity and chloride ion residue in the preparation of gold catalysts,a preparation method to obtain supported gold catalyst Au/Al2O3 was introduced and its catalytic performance was tested for cyclohexane oxidation.Au/Al2O3 catalysts were prepared by an impregnation-ammonia washing method.Inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry(ICP-AES),X-ray diffraction(XRD) and transmission electron microscopy(TEM) were used to characterize these catalysts.The effects of gold loadings,reaction temperature,pressure and reaction time on the catalytic activity for the selective oxidation of cyclohexane to cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol using molecular oxygen as oxidant were studied.The results show that the higher the gold loading is,the bigger the size of the gold particles is and the lower the catalytic activity is.Under the reaction conditions of 150 ℃,1.5 MPa and 3 h,using Au/Al2O3 catalyst with an actual gold loading of 0.58%,the cyclohexane conversion can reach 8.96% with 93.52% of total selectivity to cyclohexanone,cyclohexanol and cyclohexyl hydroperoxide.Moreover,according to the recycling test,the Au/Al2O3 catalyst exhibites good stability.
Efficient oxidation of monosaccharides to sugar acids under neutral condition in flow reactors with gold-supported activated carbon catalysts

Abstract:A significant reaction in the synthesis of biomass-based chemicals is the catalyst-based and targeted oxidation of monosaccharides into valuable sugar acids. In this study, an activated carbon supported gold catalyst was used to oxidize glucose and xylose to gluconic acid and xylonic acid under neutral condition. Optimization of reaction conditions for the catalysts was performed using both a batch reactor and a flow-through reactor. In a batch reactor, the yields of gluconic and xylonic acid reached 93% and 92%, respectively, at 90 °C within 180 min. In a flow reactor, both reactions reached a similar yield at 80 °C with the weight hourly space velocity of 47.1 h −1 . The reaction kinetics were explored in the flow reactor. The oxidation of glucose and xylose to gluconic and xylonic acid followed a first-order kinetics and the turnover frequency was 0.195 and 0.161 s −1 , respectively. The activation energy was evaluated to be 60.58 and 59.30 kJ·mol −1 , respectively. This study presents an environmentally friendly and feasible method for the selective oxidation of monosaccharides using an activated carbon supported gold catalyst, benefiting the high-value application of carbohydrates.

Abstract:Ocean-based chitin biomass refinery has gained growing attentions for the renewable production of various nitrogenous chemicals. Herein, a green, simple and efficient approach was put forward to obtain valuable glucosaminic acid (GlcNA) from chitin-derived glucosamine (GlcN) in water under near room temperature and atmospheric air. The highest GlcNA yield of ~85% was achieved under optimal conditions by gold nanoparticles on zinc oxide (Au/ZnO) fabricated by a deposition precipitation (DP) method, without the extra addition of any base or oxidant. The richer surface oxygen vacancies on ZnO was beneficial to generate well-dispersed Au NPs compared to other attempted support species. Au NPs with varied average particle sizes were synthesized by adjusting the catalyst preparation methods and parameters. A good linear relationship was established between TOFs and 1/d, which shows that small-sized (1.5-2 nm), uniformly-dispersed Au NPs on ZnO was important for GlcN oxidation under mild conditions. This study points out a useful direction to improve the oxidative activity of supported Au catalysts and opens new possibilities for mild but effective exploitation of chitin biomass.
Influence of Reaction Parameters on Nanogold-Catalyzed Glucose and Xylose Oxidation: A Joint Experimental and DFT Study

Abstract:The electrocatalytic oxidation (ECO) of glucose on gold requires alkaline conditions and relatively high potentials (>0.3 VRHE). Although the adsorption of hydroxide ions (OHads) is also known to occur under these conditions, the generally accepted proton-coupled electron transfer mechanism for sugar ECO does not explicitly state the role of OHads in the sugar adsorption or oxidation steps. To investigate this, we carried out a combined experimental and density functional theory (DFT) study on the ECO of glucose and xylose over a nanogold catalyst under temperature and pH control. Grand canonical DFT (GC-DFT) was used to identify the preferred reaction mechanism in which OHads facilitates the thermodynamically feasible formation of gluconic and xylonic acid. Calculated results also showed that OHads plays a role in improving the acid selectivity. Constant-potential electrolyses in sugar solutions were performed using mesoporous (Sibunit) carbon-supported Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) with an average cluster size of 4.7 nm. Experimental results showed that the highest conversions for glucose (57.7%) and xylose (49.4%) were obtained at 25 °C and pH 12.5, with gluconic and xylonic acid selectivity of 81.5 and 87.8%, respectively. The catalytic activities were high considering the low Au loading (∼0.1% wt). Higher pH led to a decrease in the ECO rate possibly due to excess hydroxide ions blocking active sites for sugar adsorption. Our results highlight the importance of computational studies in elucidating reaction mechanisms for sugar ECO where sugar acids are the main oxidation products. This is crucial in designing reaction systems for the viable production of these value-added chemicals from biomass.

Abstract:Catalytic transformation of glycerol to value-added products has attracted the attention of scientists all over the world. Among various transformations, selective oxidation of glycerol with molecular oxygen to dihydroxyacetone, glyceric acid, glyceraldehydes, and tartronic acid is challenging both from the viewpoint of academic research and industrial application. Herein, we review the recent progresses in the selective oxidation of glycerol under base-free conditions. Those catalysts widely reported for the selective oxidation of the terminal hydroxyl and secondary hydroxyl groups in glycerol, such as monometallic Au, Pt, and Pd NPs, and bimetallic Au-Pt, Au-Pd, Pt-Bi, Pt-Sb, and Pt-Cu, were compared and discussed in detail. The reaction mechanism over Pt-based catalysts, possible catalyst deactivation, and the corresponding improvements are presented. Further, the recent progresses in the continuous oxidation of glycerol in fixed bed reactors and its excellent selectivity in the formation of dihydroxyacetone are highlighted.
Base-free Aerobic Oxidation of Glycerol on TiO2-supported Bimetallic Au–Pt Catalysts

Abstract:The aerobic oxidation of glycerol provides an economically viable route to glyceraldehyde, dihydroxyacetone and glyceric acid with versatile applications, for which monometallic Pt, Au and Pd and bimetallic Au–Pt, Au–Pd and Pt–Pd catalysts on TiO2 were examined under base-free conditions. Pt exhibited a superior activity relative to Pd, and Au–Pd and Pt–Pd while Au was essentially inactive. The presence of Au on the Au–Pt/TiO2 catalysts led to their higher activities (normalized per Pt atom) in a wide range of Au/Pt atomic ratios (i.e. 1/3–7/1), and the one with the Au/Pt ratio of 3/1 exhibited the highest activity. Such promoting effect is ascribed to the increased electron density on Pt via the electron transfer from Au to Pt, as characterized by the temperature-programmed desorption of CO and infra-red spectroscopy for CO adsorption. Meanwhile, the presence of Au on Au–Pt/TiO2, most like due to the observed electron transfer, changed the product selectivity, and facilitated the oxidation of the secondary hydroxyl groups in glycerol, leading to the favorable formation of dihydroxyacetone over glyceraldehyde and glyceric acid that were derived from the oxidation of the primary hydroxyl groups. The synergetic effect between Au and Pt demonstrates the feasibility in the efficient oxidation of glycerol to the targeted products, for example, by rational tuning of the electronic properties of metal catalysts.
Deciphering the Electrocatalytic Reactivity of Glucose Anomers at Bare Gold Electrocatalysts for Biomass-Fueled Electrosynthesis

Abstract:One of the questions not yet elucidated in the electrocatalytic oxidation of glucose is whether the first step of dehydrogenating proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) concerns the hydrogen directly bound to an anomeric carbon (β-anomer) or that bound to oxygen of the anomeric carbon (α-anomer). The knowledge is necessary for renewable-energy-powered electrosynthesis of chemicals/fuels. To decipher that, we have used α-d-, β-d-, and d-glucose models to interrogate the electrocatalysis of the glucose anomers in neutral and alkaline pHs. We have also optimized a pulse methodology to directly grow surfactant- and binder-free gold particles onto the gas diffusion electrode (GDE) as free-standing electrocatalysts to bridge the scales between fundamental and applied research in fuel cells and electrolysis. Cyclic voltammetry measurements show that the electrooxidation of all of the glucose anomers starts at a potential region, where the gold surface is not yet fully oxidized and is dominated by the dehydrogenating adsorption of glucose, which rules out the hypothesis that glucose first adsorbs on the hydroxylated gold surface. The results in neutral pHs highlight the better electrocatalytic reactivity of the α-anomer over the β-anomer and the opposite in alkaline pHs, which invalidates the traditional thoughts that the β-anomer would always be the most reactive. Potential-dependent energy profiles computed by density functional theory (DFT) mainly confirm the promoted approach by the OH of the anomeric carbon (α-anomer). The deciphering of the electrocatalytic reactivity of glucose anomers at GDE-Au electrocatalysts, where gluconate is the main oxidation product at high selectivity and faradaic efficiency (>80%), opens opportunities to stimulate the electrosynthesis of renewable platform chemicals from the cellulosic biomass. The high selectivity and faradaic efficiency toward gluconate, a commodity renewable chemical, open opportunities to stimulate the biomass-fueled electrosynthesis.

Abstract:In this paper we report non-enzymatic glucose oxidation with N, N′-Bis(2-hydroxybenzylidineamino) benzene gold (III) complex on reduced graphene oxide-gold (rGO-Au) nanoparticle coated modified copper (Cu) electrode. Potassium ferricyanide in 50 mM phosphate buffer solution (pH 7.0) was used as a mediator. The [(Salophen)Au] + on rGO shows good catalytic property for the oxidation of glucose to gluconic acid (GA). The maximum current response produced by Au 3+ /Au + redox potential was monitored by the linear sweep voltammetric method (LSV). As glucose concentration increases the current response at Au +3 /Au + redox potential decreases simultaneously. On catalytic oxidation of glucose to GA by the complex [(Salophen)Au] + , the solution pH reduces to 2.75, which results the decrease of current responses at the Au 3+ /Au + working potential.

Abstract:Gold nanoparticles supported on polymorphs of gallia (α-, β-, and γ-Ga2O3) were evaluated for the solvent-free liquid phase oxidation of benzyl alcohol by molecular oxygen. High selectivity to benzaldehyde was obtained under the reaction conditions of 130°C, 5atm and 5h in an autoclave. The Au/γ-Ga2O3 catalyst was also evaluated for oxidation of a range of alcohols using mesitylene as solvent under flowing oxygen at atmospheric pressure and 90°C. Under these conditions the conversion of benzyl alcohol reached 100% after 2h and it was demonstrated that the catalyst can be recycled four times without significant loss of activity. The structural data (TEM, XPS and TPSR of 2-propanol adsorption) along with the catalytic results indicate that the unique dehydrogenation capabilities of the Au/γ-gallia system are responsible for the enhanced activity achieved in the liquid phase oxidation of benzyl alcohol.
Electrocatalytic oxidation of d-glucose at nanoporous Au and Au–Ag alloy electrodes in alkaline aqueous solutions

Abstract:Nanoporous Au–Ag alloys with different Ag content were prepared by selective dissolution of Ag from Au42Ag58 alloy samples in HNO3 solutions. With gradual dissolution of Ag component, the corroded Au–Ag alloy samples display typical bicontinuous nanoporous structures after dealloying for more than 10min. The as-prepared nanostructured Au–Ag alloys exhibit obviously enhanced catalytic activity towards the electrooxidation of d-glucose as compared with the uncorroded Au42Ag58 alloy. It is of interest that the existence of a tiny amount of silver in the corroded Au–Ag alloys is very advantageous to enhancing their catalytic activity for the electrooxidation of glucose. The new finding was confirmed by the significant enhancement of the catalytic activity of a nanoporous gold (NPG) electrode after modification with a monolayer of Ag atoms underpotentially deposited (UPD). The nanoporous Au–Ag alloys with appropriate amount of Ag and the NPGs modified with Ag UPD monolayers are thus expected to be promising electrocatalysts for the development of glucose sensors and glucose fuel cells.
Selective oxidation of glycerol to dihydroxyacetone over N-doped porous carbon stabilized CuxO supported Au catalysts

Abstract:In this work, N-doped porous carbon stabilized CuxO (Cu-NPCs) were synthesized by a one-pot method using copper nitrate as copper precursor with the aid of Pluronic F127 under acidic condition. The characterization results confirmed that CuxO species (CuO and Cu2O) existed in NPC in a highly dispersed state due to the strong interaction between CuxO and the doped N atoms. The obtained Cu-NPCs were used as supports to prepare Au catalysts for glycerol (GLY) oxidation to dihydroxyacetone (DHA) under base-free conditions. During the reaction, GLY preferentially adsorbed onto Au nanoparticles via the secondary OH groups due to the porous characteristics of the supports, the enhanced surface basicity from the N functionalities accelerates the alkoxide formation by abstracting proton from GLY, and the surface Cu+ sites instead of Au nanoparticles activate O2 molecules to produce active oxygen species, as a result, Au/Cu-NPC-15 %-H, which is the best catalyst in Au/Cu-NPCs, exhibited much higher catalytic activity and selectivity than those of Au/CuO. Moreover, due to the stabilization of CuxO species by NPC, relatively stable surface Cu+ content, and the strong interaction between Au nanoparticles and the supports, Au/Cu-NPC-15 %-H also possessed much better catalytic stability than that of Au/CuO during four consecutive catalytic runs.
