Abstract:During the process of enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose,the conversion of cellobiose to glucose is restricted due to the deficiency of cellobiase in the cellulase system.The accumulation of the hydrolysis product,cellobiose and glucose,caused severe feedback inhibition on the cellulase catalytic reaction.An effective solution was presented to resolve the problems.The spores containing cellobiase from Asperillus niger ZU-07 and the cells of Lactobacillus delbrium were entrapped together into calcium alginate gels to form a coimmobilized cell system,which was used to convert cellulosic hydrolysate to lactic acid.Analysis indicated that the cellobiose in the cellulosic hydrolysate could be hydrolyzed to glucose quickly by the cellobiase in the coimmobilized cells,and that the glucose could be converted to lactic acid effectively by the immobilized L.delbrueckii cells.The optimum reaction temperature of the coimmobilized cells was 48 ℃,and the produced lactic acid concentration by the coimmobilized cells reached 41.71 g/L after 48 h synergetic reaction in the cellulosic hydrolysate containing 49.40 g/L reducing sugar.The coimmobilized cells were quite stable and efficient,and could be repeatedly used for at least 12 batches.

Abstract:A new and green technology for converting microalgae to high value-added chemicals with solid metal oxides catalysts under hydrothermal conditions was proposed. The results indicated that ZrO2, among other test catalysts, can prominently boost the production of acetic acid and a highest yield of 24% was achieved at 300 °C for 2 h with a filling rate of 50%. The metal oxides catalyst provided a promising solution to obtain acetic acid from microalgae conversion.

Abstract:Biobased L-lactic acid (L-LA) appeals to industries; however, existing technologies are plagued by limited productivity and high energy consumption. This study established an integrated process for producing macroalgae-based L-LA from Eucheuma denticulatum phycocolloid (EDP). Dilute acid-assisted microbubbles-mediated ozonolysis (DAMMO) was selected for the ozonolysis of EDP to optimize D-galactose recovery. Through single-factor optimization of DAMMO treatment, a maximum D-galactose recovery efficiency (59.10 %) was achieved using 0.15 M H2SO4 at 80 °C for 75 min. Fermentation with 3 % (w/v) mixed microbial cells (Bacillus coagulans ATCC 7050 and Lactobacillus acidophilus-14) and fermented residues achieved a 97.67 % L-LA yield. Additionally, this culture approach was further evaluated in repeated-batch fermentation and showed an average L-LA yield of 93.30 %, providing a feasible concept for macroalgae-based L-LA production.

Abstract:In all biorefinery systems, excess water represents a key challenge, and its removal by drying is often a necessary and crucial pre‐treatment. Second‐generation feedstocks have often fallen at this hurdle, particularly microalgae‐derived biomasses, which require extensive (and costly) dewatering. Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) has gained increasing attention in recent years as a technology that uses the water present in the feedstock as a versatile reaction medium, which functions as a solvent, reactant, and catalyst for a cascade of organic reactions. Converting organic biomasses into oil, aqueous, solid, and gas fractions, the development of HTL provides the opportunity to exploit previously unsuitable biomasses in a versatile bio‐refinery approach. Marine macroalgae (seaweeds) offer a sustainable source of renewable biomass, which require no land or freshwater to cultivate or harvest. With 70% of the surface of the planet covered in seawater and levels of eutrophication increasing, seaweeds are an underutilized resource with excellent potential for relieving the pressure on fossil resources. Hitherto, this exploitation has been hindered by a lack of suitable and economical processing tools. Here we review the potential for applying HTL to processing marine macroalgae and discuss the potential products and services that can be derived from this potential biorefinery system. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:This paper investigated the hydrothermal conversion of glucose to lactic acid using Al(OH)(3) to exploit mild base catalysts. Results showed that the highest lactic acid yield of 17% was obtained from glucose with Al(OH)(3) with 35% water filling at 300 degrees C for 60 s. Thus, this study may provide a promising method for lactic acid synthesis and biomass utilization under hydrothermal conditions with aluminium hydroxide.

Abstract:Formic acid-induced controlled-release hydrolysis of sugar-rich microalgae (Scenedesmus) over the Sn-Beta catalyst was found to be a highly efficient process for producing lactic acid as a platform chemical. One-pot reaction with a very high lactic acid yield of 83.0% was realized in a batch reactor using water as the solvent. Under the attack of formic acid, the cell wall of Scenedesmus was disintegrated, and hydrolysis of the starch inside the cell was strengthened in a controlled-release mode, resulting in a stable and relatively low glucose concentration. Subsequently, the Sn-Beta catalyst was employed for the efficient conversion of glucose into lactic acid with stable catalytic performance through isomerization, retro-aldol and de-/rehydration reactions. Thus, the hydrolysis of polysaccharides and the catalytic conversion of the monosaccharide into lactic acid was realized by the combination of an organic BrOnsted acid and a heterogeneous Lewis acid catalyst.

Abstract:Marine macroalgae Enteromorpha prolifera, one or the main algae genera for green tide, was converted to bio-oil by hydrothermal liquefaction in a batch reactor at temperatures of 220-320 degrees C. The liquefaction products were separated into a dichloromethane-soluble fraction (bio-oil), water-soluble fraction, solid residue, and gaseous fraction. Effects of the temperature, reaction time, and Na2CO3 catalyst on the yields of liquefaction products were investigated. A moderate temperature of 300 degrees C with 5 wt % Na2CO3 and reaction time of 30 min led to the highest bio-oil yield of 23.0 wt %. The raw algae and liquefaction products were analyzed using elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC MS), and H-1 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The higher heating values (HHVs) of bio-oils obtained at 300 degrees C were around 28-30 MJ/kg. The bio-oil was a complex mixture of ketones, aldehydes, phenols, alkenes, fatty acids, esters, aromatics, and nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds. Acetic acid was the main component of the water-soluble products. The results might be helpful to find a possible strategy for use of byproducts of green tide as feedstock for bio-oil production, which should be beneficial for environmental protection and renewable energy development.

Abstract:In this paper, hydrothermal conversion of cellulose into organic acids in the presence of metal oxides was investigated. The results showed metal oxides could enhance the conversion of cellulose into organic acids. The total yields of organic acids of 41.6% with Al2O3 2.0 mmol from cellulose was achieved at 300 oC for 1 min, NaOH 2.5 M and water 2 mL. The plausible mechanism for the hydrothermal conversion of cellulose into organic acids was also discussed.

Abstract:The microalgae and macroalgae-based hydrochars produced by hydrothermal carbonization were mainly used as biofuels, however, their application in anaerobic digestion (AD) was little known. This study investigated the effects of microalgae Chlorella-based hydrochar (HC-C) and macroalgae Laminaria-based hydrochar (HC-L) on a continuous AD reactor under different organic loading rates (OLR). The AD process stability of hydrochars supplemented reactors were performed well under the increase of OLR from 2.6 to 6.5 g COD/L/d, and HC-C and HC-L addition could significantly enhance the daily methane yield by 36.0% and 31.4%, respectively. Interestingly, the possible mechanisms of HC-C and HC-L on the enhanced AD were similar, namely increasing sludge granulation, promoting the Methanothrix relative abundance and key enzyme activities, and further facilitating potential direct interspecies electron transfer between methanogens and organic-degrading bacteria. This study provided an implication on the potential application of algae-based hydrochars in wastewater treatment and energy recovery.

Abstract:The yield and composition of the biocrude obtained by hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of Nannocloropsis gaditana using heterogeneous catalysts were evaluated. The catalysts were based on metal oxides (CaO, CeO2, La2O3, MnO2, and Al2O3). The reactions were performed in a batch autoclave reactor at 320 °C for 10 min with a 1:10 (wt/wt) microalga:water ratio. These catalysts increased the yield of the liquefaction phase (from 94.14 ± 0.30 wt% for La2O3 to 99.49 ± 0.11 wt% for MnO2) as compared with the thermal reaction (92.60 ± 1.20 wt%). Consequently, the biocrude yields also raised in the metal oxides catalysed HTL, showing values remarkably higher for the CaO (49.73 ± 0.9 wt%) in comparison to the HTL without catalyst (42.60 ± 0.70 wt%). The N and O content of the biocrude obtained from non-catalytic HTL were 6.11 ± 0.02 wt% and 10.50 ± 0.50 wt%, respectively. In this sense, the use of the metal oxides decreased the N content of the biocrude (4.62 ± 0.15–5.45 ± 0.11 wt%), although, they kept constant or increased its O content (11.39 ± 2.06–21.68 ± 0.03 wt%). This study shows that CaO, CeO2 and Al2O3 can be promising catalysts based on the remarkable amount of biocrude, the highest values of C, H, heating value, energy recovery, and the lowest content of N, O and S.

Abstract:Macroalgae (Ulva fasciata, Gracilaria corticata, and Sargassum wightii) were collected from the marine environment and used as the substrate for lactic acid production. These macroalgae were pretreated with hydrochloric acid (0.2 to 0.4 N) for various times (20 to 60 min). Additionally, the algal hydrolysate was incubated with cellulase for 24 h at 30 ± 1 °C to achieve enzymatic saccharification. Proximate analysis of these macroalgae was performed, and the yield was high in G. corticata. The G. corticata hydrolysate was composed of 10.01 ± 0.12% ash content, 1.25 ± 0.2% total fat, 10.2 ± 0.1% crude protein, 9.2 ± 0.2% moisture content, and a higher level of total carbohydrate (69.33 ± 1.5%) than the other two macroalgae. In G. corticata, the enzymatic treatment showed the maximum reducing sugar (33.5 ± 2.3%) relative to the other macroalgal hydrolysates and was considered for optimization of lactic acid production. Lactobacillus acidophilus (MTCC447) utilized pretreated G. corticata hydrolysate (enriched with 5% yeast extract), and maximum lactic acid yield was achieved after 72 h, 30 °C incubation temperature, and 6% inoculum (1×108 CFU/mL) in static culture condition. Batch fermentation was performed in the 1-L bioreactor at room temperature (30 °C) for 96 h. Lactic acid production was maximum within 72 h and the pH value was depleted. The present finding indicates that G. corticata could be used as a substrate for lactic acid production.

Abstract:A novel approach for the synergetic conversion of microalgae including its residue after biodiesel extraction and CO2 (or HCO3-) into chemicals is reported for the first time. Results show that CO2 (or HCO3-) can be selectively reduced into formate with microalgae as a reductant, and simultaneously HCO3- itself significantly enhances the selective conversion of microalgae into organic acids and N-substituted lactam. The mechanism study showed that the lactam from the protein in microalgae contributed to the conversion of HCO3- into formate. The present study provides a new and green method for efficient utilization of microalgae and CO2 conversion.
Third-generation D-lactic acid production using red macroalgae Gelidium amansii by co-fermentation of galactose, glucose and xylose

Abstract:Macroalgae biomass has been considered as a promising renewable feedstock for lactic acid production owing to its lignin-free, high carbohydrate content and high productivity. Herein, the D-lactic acid production from red macroalgae Gelidium amansii by Pediococcus acidilactici was investigated. The fermentable sugars in G. amansii acid-prehydrolysate were mainly galactose and glucose with a small amounts of xylose. P. acidilactici could simultaneously ferment the mixed sugars of galactose, glucose and xylose into D-lactic acid at high yield (0.90 g/g), without carbon catabolite repression (CCR). The assimilating pathways of these sugars in P. acidilactici were proposed based on the whole genome sequences. Simultaneous saccharification and co-fermentation (SSCF) of the pretreated and biodetoxified G. amansii was also conducted, a record high of D-lactic acid (41.4 g/L) from macroalgae biomass with the yield of 0.34 g/g dry feedstock was achieved. This study provided an important biorefinery strain for D-lactic acid production from macroalgae biomass.

Abstract:Production of chemicals from microalgae is a substantial way to contribute to the economic viability of a biorefinery. In this research, we report a new and green method for producing acetic acid from microalgae directly or from its waste residue after biofuel extraction using copper (II) oxide (CuO) as a solid oxidant. Results show that the CuO can significantly facilitate the oxidation of microalgae and its waste residue into acetic acid with the simultaneous reduction of CuO to Cu and Cu2O. The maximum acetic acid yield reached up to 35 % and 31 % from the microalgae and its waste residue, respectively, which are much higher than previous report (14.9 %) which is obtained with traditional liquid oxidants such as H2O2. The reduction of CuO to Cu(O) at a relatively low temperature (300 degrees C) offered an additional benefit of developing a sustainable method in copper metallurgy at mild conditions. Abstract:We investigated the hydrothermal conversion of the carbohydrates including glucose, cellulose, and starch to lactic acid using NaOH and Ca(OH)(2) as alkaline catalysts. Both catalysts significantly promoted the lactic acid formation. The highest yield of lactic acid from glucose was 27% with 2.5 M NaOH and 20% with 0.32 M Ca(OH)(2) at 300 degrees C for 60 s. The lactic acid yields from cellulose and starch were comparable with the yield from glucose with 0.32 M Ca(OH)(2) at 300 degrees C, but the reaction time in the case of cellulose was 90 s. The mechanism of lactic acid formation from glucose was discussed by identifying the intermediate products. Lactic acid may be formed via the formation of aldoses of two to four carbons including aldose of three carbons, which are all formed by reverse aldol condensation and double bond rule of hexose. Abstract:Eukaryotic algae represent a highly heterogeneous group in terms of organization, lifestyle, and metabolic capabilities. Unicellular green microalgae are capable of biohydrogen production through direct and indirect photolysis as well as dark fermentation. Most algae hydrogen studies focus on axenic algal cultures, although these are difficult and expensive to maintain for continuous operation. Moreover, the complex interplays and metabolic fluxes between algae and bacteria in natural ecosystems provide a number of clear biological and technological benefits to large-scale functional algae-based systems. Two green algae species from the Chlamydomonas and Chlorella genera were used to engineer stable synthetic communities by incorporating a starch-degrading bacterium from the Bacillus genus into the inter-kingdom consortium. Continuous photoheterotrophic biohydrogen production was achieved by elaborating an appropriate algal–bacterial ratio and fine-tuning the culture conditions for the synthetic consortia. Medium with starch as only carbon source served as a simple model of cheap substrate for algal hydrogen generation. The engineered pairwise algal–bacterial associations showed increased biomass and biohydrogen yield compared to the axenic control conditions. Chlorella sp. MACC-360 produced a significantly higher amount of hydrogen when both the bacterium partner and starch were added to the media compared to the axenic algae. Continuous, elevated algal hydrogen production was achieved in media supplemented with 8 g L−1 starch as sole carbon source when carefully selected initial cell number values were used for the Chlorella sp. MACC-360–B. amlyloliquefaciens co-cultures.

In Situ Biogas Upgrading and Fertilizer Recovery in Anaerobic Digestion from Laminaria Hydrothermal Carbonization Process Water by Fe-Modified Hydrochar

Abstract:Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) combined with anaerobic digestion (AD) is a cost-effective process to simultaneously treat biomass wastes for hydrochar production, energy recovery, and wastewater treatment. However, low fermentation efficiency and high carbon dioxide content in biogas are tricky problems of this process. This study developed a novel strategy based on Fe-modified hydrochar (Fe-HC) for in situ biogas upgrading and fertilizer recovery by AD of macroalgae Laminaria HTC process water. The daily yield and proportion of methane in biogas in the Fe-HC added reactor were 216.6 ± 13.1 mL/g CODfed and 90.3 ± 1.3%, respectively. The conductive Fe-HC increased relative abundances of Trichococcus and hydrogenotrophic methanogens (Methanosarcina and Methanobacterium) and promoted the electron transport system activity, heme c content in extracellular polymeric substances, and sludge granulation. These results implied the Fe-HC-promoted biogas upgrading might be ascribed to the enhancement of H2-mediated interspecies electron transfer, potential direct interspecies electron transfer, and trace FeCO3 precipitation. The effluent from the Fe-HC supplemented reactor was rich in nutrients, including K+, I–, gibberellin (GA3), etc., but low in human potential pathogenic bacteria and heavy metal content, indicating it had excellent potential as a fertilizer. Abstract:Pretreatment is an essential procedure to enhance the biodegradability when algae biomass is used as substrate for fermentative hydrogen production, In this study the potential of microwave pretreatment for enhancing the hydrogen production from macroalgae biomass Laminaria japonica was investigated. Microwave pretreatment at different temperatures (100–180 °C, 30 min) was explored, algae biomass disruption increased with increasing temperature, while highest hydrogen yield of 15.8 mL/g TSadded was obtained from 160 °C microwave treated algae biomass. Hydrogen production can be indicated by the dehydrogenase activity. After the microwave treatment, hydrogen production process altered from butyrate-type to acetate-type fermentation.
