Abstract:This month marks the 50th anniversary of Nucleic Acids Research ('NAR') . Led by a team of three founding editors (Richard T. Walker and A. Stanley Jones at the University of Birmingham in the UK and Dieter Söll at Yale University in the USA), the journal was formed for the publication of 'original papers dealing with the physical, chemical, biochemical, biological or medical properties of nucleic acids, their constituents and analogs' (1). The introduction to the inaugural issue went on to state that the journal's mission would be to promote 'interdisciplinary means of communication that will enable scientists in one specialty to see more clearly the points of contact and importance between their work and that of others.' That first issue featured fifteen research articles, spanning studies of DNA polymerase mechanism (2), tRNA modification and reactivity (3,4), DNA methylation (5) and ribosome assembly (6,7). Starting a trend that continues in the present-day journal, several additional papers described new methods, for the study of nucleic acid sequence composition, labeling or synthesis (8–10).

Abstract:Since it was launched in 2006, PLOS ONE has published over fifty articles illustrating the many facets of the emerging field of synthetic biology. This article reviews these publications by organizing them into broad categories focused on DNA synthesis and assembly techniques, the development of libraries of biological parts, the use of synthetic biology in protein engineering applications, and the engineering of gene regulatory networks and metabolic pathways. Finally, we review articles that describe enabling technologies such as software and modeling, along with new instrumentation. In order to increase the visibility of this body of work, the papers have been assembled into the PLOS ONE Synthetic Biology Collection (www.ploscollections.org/synbio). Many of the innovative features of the PLOS ONE web site will help make this collection a resource that will support a lively dialogue between readers and authors of PLOS ONE synthetic biology papers. The content of the collection will be updated periodically by including relevant articles as they are published by the journal. Thus, we hope that this collection will continue to meet the publishing needs of the synthetic biology community.

Abstract:Abstract We are launching a series to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the first issue of Molecular Biology and Evolution. In 2024, we will publish virtual issues containing selected papers published in the Society for Molecular Biology and Evolution journals, Molecular Biology and Evolution and Genome Biology and Evolution. Each virtual issue will be accompanied by a perspective that highlights the historic and contemporary contributions of our journals to a specific topic in molecular evolution. This perspective, the first in the series, presents an account of the broad array of methods that have been published in the Society for Molecular Biology and Evolution journals, including methods to infer phylogenies, to test hypotheses in a phylogenetic framework, and to infer population genetic processes. We also mention many of the software implementations that make methods tractable for empiricists. In short, the Society for Molecular Biology and Evolution community has much to celebrate after four decades of publishing high-quality science including numerous important inferential methods.

Abstract:Innovation in medicinal chemistry has been at the heart of ACS Medicinal Chemistry Letters since the journal's founding 10 years ago. In his inaugural editorial, Editor-in-Chief Dennis Liotta laid out a vision for the journal to become the "premier international journal for rapid communication of cutting-edge studies," and, after 10 years, it has become exactly that. The great hope of drug discovery scientists is that their innovations will lead to new therapeutics to treat unmet medical needs. In the spirit of innovation and in celebration of the recent 10th anniversary of ACS Med. Chem. Lett., we highlight five therapeutics that were first reported or first comprehensively characterized within ACS Med. Chem. Lett.. This overview also serves to introduce the expansion of the scope of the Innovations article type to include Topical Innovations. With this extension, the journal hopes to provide a forum to showcase concise (rather than comprehensive) reviews of topics that are both timely and of great interest to the medicinal chemistry community. Moreover, these articles will emphasize the next steps to move the field toward new areas of interest in medicinal chemistry. Appropriate topics might include case studies of clinical candidates or approved drugs, new assay technologies in drug discovery, novel target classes, and innovative new approaches towards modulation of human physiology. Since its founding 10 years ago, ACS Med. Chem. Lett. has established itself as a venue for the rapid communication of studies in medicinal chemistry and drug discovery. There have been several drugs and clinical candidates that were first reported or first comprehensively characterized in ACS Med. Chem. Lett. In celebration of the 10th anniversary of ACS Med. Chem. Lett. this Topical Innovations article highlights five of these compounds: Ivosidenib, Siponimod, Glasdegib, Parsaclisib, and Dabrafenib.

Abstract:When The Principles of Humane Experimental Technique was published in 1959, authors William Russell and Rex Burch had a modest goal: to make researchers think about what they were doing in the laboratory – and to do it more humanely. Sixty years later, their groundbreaking book was celebrated for inspiring a revolution in science and launching a new field: The 3Rs of alternatives to animal experimentation. On November 22, 2019, some pioneering and leading scientists and researchers in the field gathered at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore for the 60 Years of the 3Rs Symposium: Lessons Learned and the Road Ahead. The event was sponsored by the Johns Hopkins Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT), the Foundation for Chemistry Research and Initiatives, the Alternative Research & Development Foundation (ARDF), the American Cleaning Institute (ACI), the International Fragrance Association (IFRA), the Institute for In Vitro Sciences (IIVS), John “Jack” R. Fowle III, and the Society of Toxicology (SoT). Fourteen presentations shared the history behind the groundbreaking publication, international efforts to achieve its aims, stumbling blocks to progress, as well as remarkable achievements. The day was a tribute to Russell and Burch, and a testament to what is possible when people from many walks of life – science, government, and industry – work toward a common goal.

Abstract:This manuscript commemorates the 100th anniversary of APMIS, highlighting its evolution from a regional journal, founded in 1924 as Acta Pathologica et Microbiologica Scandinavica, to an international platform fostering global collaboration in pathology, microbiology, and immunology. The journal's inception was driven by Ulrik Quensel's vision in 1919, leading to the establishment of the Northern Pathological Society and the launch of the journal in 1924. APMIS has consistently published landmark research, including significant contributions from prominent. These studies have advanced understanding in fields such as pathology, microbiology, and immunology. The journal expanded its scope in the 1970s to include immunology, rebranding as APMIS in the mid‐1980s. Recent decades have seen a continued commitment to cutting‐edge research and an increasing impact factor. As APMIS transitions to an Open Access model under Wiley, it will be renamed the PMI Journal (Pathology, Microbiology, and Immunology) to reflect its global reach and dedication to scientific excellence. This centennial celebration acknowledges the contributions of editors, authors, and readers, looking forward to future advancements in biomedical research.

Immunology and Cell Biology

Abstract:Immunology & Cell Biology celebrated its 100‐year birthday as a journal with an editorial workshop focused on how we can improve the author experience. In our renewed editorial policies, we articulate our editorial focus on the quality of the scientific question and the robustness of the conclusions, including a new "scoop protection" policy to live our values. The journal is dedicated to maintaining its relationship with reviewers, enabling rapid quality peer review, but is also opening new lines of submission with expedited cross‐platform assessment of reviews and incorporation into the Review Commons submission pipeline. In 2024 we will expand our social media promotion of articles and build on the career development resource of Immunology Futures. Here we lay out the ethos, numbers and rationale behind ICB's renewed author‐centric publication policies for 2024.

Annual Review of Analytical Chemistry

Abstract:Nucleic acid testing is the cornerstone of modern molecular diagnostics. This review describes the current status and future directions of molecular diagnostics, focusing on four major techniques: polymerase chain reaction (PCR), next-generation sequencing (NGS), isothermal amplification methods such as recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) and loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP), and clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)-based detection methods. We explore the advantages and limitations of each technique, describe how each overlaps with or complements other techniques, and examine current clinical offerings. This review provides a broad perspective into the landscape of molecular diagnostics and highlights potential future directions in this rapidly evolving field.
