Abstract:There hasn't been much exchange of ideas between economists and philosophers of economics. This is understandable to some extent, given that the primary focus of these communities is different. Most economists show little interest in the general and abstract methodological issues that philosophers of economics typically explore, for example, and conversely most philosophers of economics do not seem to be very interested in the practical, 'bread and butter' decisions that pre-occupy economists in their professional practices. But there are exceptions, such as the series of papers Itzhak Gilboa, Andrew Postlewaite, Larry Samuelson, and David Schmeidler (GPSS) have been publishing on how economists think about their own modelling practices (Gilboa et al., Citation 2014 , Citation 2018 , Citation 2019 , Citation 2023 ). These papers for sure fall within the orbit of interest of philosophers of economics. Yet direct and explicit engagement with the work of GPSS by philosophers of economics has been largely missing. When we saw a working paper by GPSS on economic methodology circulating some three years ago, we thought that it would provide a nice opportunity to organize an open exchange with prominent philosophers of economics. Hence, we contacted GPSS to invite them to submit this as a target article for a special issue. Although this working paper was submitted to another journal (Gilboa et al. Citation 2023 ), GPSS kindly offered to write a new article for JEM, outlining their views. After their article was published online, we invited a diverse set of authors with expertise on this topic to provide commentaries. Many of those invited graciously agreed to submit their commentary. While the process, including submission of the articles and peer review, took longer than anticipated, we are proud to present this special issue at the end of 2024.
