Abstract:Graphene has a unique atom-thick two-dimensional structure and excellent properties, including high conductiv-ity and electron mobility at room temperature, large specific surface area, and excellent mechanical properties. Graphene also possesses a variety of promising electrochemical properties, such as a wide potential window, low charge-transfer resistance, high electrocatalytic activity and fast electron transfer rate. Furthermore, chemically modified graphene materials, particu-larly graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO), can be produced in a large scale and at low costs. They have good processability and can be assembled, blended or fabricated into macroscopic electrode materials with controlled compo-sitions and microstructures. Thus, graphene and its chemically modified derivatives are unique and attractive electrode materials for electrochemical biosensing. For example, GO is a chemically modified graphene and an important precursor of graphene. GO sheets have a large amount of carboxyl groups at their edges, which can be used to covalently immobilize en-zymes, realizing the detection of biomolecules. GO can also enhance the direct charge transfer of protein because of its irre-versible adsorption to protein and abundant catalytic sites. However, the oxygen functional groups of GO heavily destroy the conjugated planes of graphene sheets, decreasing the electrical property and limiting the practical applications of GO. Chemical, electrochemical, or thermal reduction can partly restore the conjugated structure, converting GO to conductive rGO. On the other hand, graphene is a material with zero band gap. Doping graphene with heteroatoms can modulate its band gap and improve its electrocatalytic properties. Graphene materials also frequently have to be blended with other functional materials to improve their dispersibility and processibility, enhance their electrochemical activity and/or selectivity. This review will summarize the recent research achievements in electrochemical biosensing based on the electrodes modified with pristine graphene ( e.g . GO, rGO, and doped graphene) or graphene composites with biomolecules, polymers, ionic liquids, metal and metal oxide nanoparticles. A perspective of developments in this research field is also provided.

Abstract:Graphene (G)-based composite materials have been widely explored for the sensing applications ascribing to their atom-thick two-dimensional conjugated structures, high conductivity, large specific surface areas and controlled modification. With the enormous advantages of film structure, G-based composite films (GCFs), prepared by combining G with different functional nanomaterials (noble metals, metal compounds, carbon materials, polymer materials, etc.), show unique optical, mechanical, electrical, chemical, and catalytic properties. Therefore, great quantities of sensors with high sensitivity, selectivity, and stability have been created in recent years. In this review, we focus on the recent advances in the fabrication technologies of GCFs and their specific sensing applications. In addition, the relationship between the properties of GCFs and sensing performance is concentrated on. Finally, the personal perspectives and key challenges of GCFs are mentioned in the hope to shed a light on their potential future research directions.

Abstract:Graphene decorated MnCo2O4 composite nanofibers (GMCFs) were synthesized by electrospinning and subsequent calcination in an Ar atmosphere. The structural and morphological characterizations of GMCFs were performed using X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The synthesized GMCFs combine the catalytic activity of spinel-type MnCo2O4 with the remarkable conductivity of graphene. In addition, electrospinning can process MnCo2O4 materials into nanosized architectures with large surface area to prevent magnetic nanoparticles from aggregating. The obtained GMCFs were applied as a novel platform for glucose biosensing. Electrochemical studies show that the developed biosensor exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity towards glucose oxidation over a wide linear range of 0.005–800µM with a low detection limit of 0.001µM.
Nanocomposites of Graphene with Ferrocene or Hemin: Preparation and Application in Electrochemical Sensing

Abstract:Graphene has sparked tremendous interests across many fields such as biosensors, electrochemical energy storage, and electronics due to its extraordinary physicochemical and structural properties. The redox mediator-functionalized graphene composites may obtain highly electroactive materials with better conductivity, dispersion, and compatibility. Ferrocene and hemin, two iron-organic complexes, are the well-known mediators in view of their various properties, including reversibility, regeneration at low potential, and generation of stable redox states. Recently, it has been demonstrated that the use of ferrocene or hemin coupled with graphene can further improve the electrochemical performances of the developed sensors. In this contribution, we, for the first time, reviewed the preparation and applications of ferrocene/graphene and hemin/graphene nanocomposites in electrochemical sensing.
Facile Preparation of Graphene-Copper Nanoparticle Composite by in Situ Chemical Reduction for Electrochemical Sensing of Carbohydrates

Abstract:A novel graphene-copper nanoparticle composite was prepared by the in situ chemical reduction of a mixture containing graphene oxide and copper(II) ions using potassium borohydride as a reductant. It was mixed with paraffin oil and packed into one end of a fused capillary to fabricate microdisc electrodes for sensing carbohydrates. The morphology and structure of the graphene-copper nanoparticle composite were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy. The results indicated that copper nanoparticles with an average diameter of 20.8 nm were successfully deposited on graphene nanosheets to form a well interconnected hybrid network. The analytical performance of these unique graphene-copper nanoparticle composite paste electrodes was demonstrated by sensing five carbohydrates in combination with cyclic voltammetry and capillary electrophoresis (CE). The advantages of the composite detectors include higher sensitivity, satisfactory stability, surface renewability, bulk modification, and low expense of fabrication. They should find applications in microchip CE, flowing-injection analysis, and other microfluidic analysis systems.

Abstract:Due to the high sensitivity, fast response, less sample usage, and simple operation, microelectrodes have attracted increasing attention in the fields of chemical analysis, biomedicine, food safety and environmental monitor recently.Given its high specific surface area, excellent electron mobility and good biocompatibility,graphene has shown a huge development potential in the field of electrochemical sensing.This review summarizes recent advances in the preparations and applications of graphene-based microelectrodes(including graphene modified microelectrode and graphene microelectrode) in sensing, such as the detection of heavy metal ions, dopamine, glucose, H2 O2 and other molecules.Simultaneously, the major problems and opportunities of these graphene-based microelectrodes in sensing for future development are also discussed.
Fabrication of free-standing graphene composite films as electrochemical biosensors

Abstract:We report a simple fabrication method for large-scale free-standing graphene–gold nanoparticle and graphene-single wall carbon nanotube composite films by using a centrifugal vacuum evaporation followed by a thermal reduction process. The homogeneous mixture of a graphene oxide (GO) suspension with gold nanoparticle (Au NP) or single wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) is self-assembled at the air/liquid interface, resulting in the multilayered GO–Au NP and GO–SWCNT composite films. The cross-sectional image reveals that the graphene layers are orderly stacked in the reduced GO–Au NP film, while the reduced GO–SWCNT film shows a randomly packed morphology due to the dominant π–π interaction between the side wall of SWCNTs and the GO surfaces. In particular, the reduced GO–Au NP film shows an increased electrode kinetics and cyclic voltammetric response in proportion to the amount of Au NPs, and 3-fold enhancement of anodic peak current was observed compared with that of the reduced GO films. We employed the reduced GO–Au NP film as a matrix to immobilize tyrosinase enzyme for phenol detection, and the phenol-induced electrochemical catalytic reaction can be monitored with 3-fold higher sensitivity than the reduced GO film, demonstrating great potential of graphene composite as an electrochemical enzyme biosensor for environmental pollutant screening.
Facile Assembly of Graphene on Anion Exchange Resin Microspheres for Electrochemical Sensing and Biosensing.

Abstract:Graphene sheets were assembled on anion exchange resin (AER) microspheres based on the electrostatic interactions between graphene oxide and AER and subsequent chemical reduction. The prepared graphene-coated AER microspheres were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. They were then embedded in the bores of pipette tips to fabricate disposable electrodes for electrochemical sensing. The workability and performance of the novel electrodes were examined by analyzing the electrochemical behavior of the electrodes for the sensing of ascorbic acid, dopamine, uric acid, acetaminophen, aniline, and glucose by cyclic voltammetry and amperometry. The advantages of the electrodes include ease of fabrication, low cost, pronounced electrocatalytic activity, and rapid response. Thus, they hold great promise for a wide range of applications.

Abstract:Graphene, renowned for its exceptional physicochemical attributes, has emerged as a favored substrate for integrating a wide array of inorganic and organic materials in scientific endeavors and innovations. Electrochemical graphene-based nanocomposite sensors have been developed by incorporating diverse nanoparticles into graphene, effectively immobilized onto electrodes through various techniques. These graphene-based nanocomposite sensors have effectively detected and quantified various electroactive species in samples. This review delves into using graphene nanocomposites to fabricate electrochemical sensors, leveraging the exceptional electrical, mechanical, and thermal properties inherent to graphene derivatives. These nanocomposites showcase electrocatalytic activity, substantial surface area, superior electrical conductivity, adsorption capabilities, and notable porosity, which are highly advantageous for sensing applications. A myriad of characterization techniques, including Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), BET surface area analysis, and X-ray diffraction (XRD), have proven effective in exploring the properties of graphene nanocomposites and validating the adjustable formation of these nanomaterials with graphene. The applicability of these sensors across various matrices, encompassing environmental, food, and biological domains, has been evaluated through electrochemical measurements, such as cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). This review provides a comprehensive overview of synthesis methods, characterization techniques, and sensor applications pertinent to graphene-based nanocomposites. Furthermore, it deliberates on the challenges and future prospects within this burgeoning field.

Abstract:Rapid detection of drugs is very important in clinical and food safety. Electrochemical detection technology is an analytical technology suitable for rapid detection in the field. However, the performance of commercial electrodes limits the application of electrochemical sensors. Graphene has excellent electrochemical performance, and its composite materials often show better performance. In this review, we summarize the electrochemical sensors fabricated from graphene composites for drug detection between 2010 and 2020. From the review, we found that graphene can greatly improve the performance of electrochemical sensors. The improvement of this performance greatly accelerates the practical application potential of electrochemical sensors in drug detection.

Abstract:Functionalized nanocomposites based on various type of graphene nanomaterials including graphene, graphene oxides (GOs), and doped graphene (oxides) are widely used as materials for various sensors that can display high sensitivity, selectivity and stability. This review with 347 references summarizes advances in the preparation and functionalization of graphene nanocomposites for the application of electrochemical sensors and biosensors. Following a general introduction into the field, the article is divided into subsections on (a) the synthesis and functionalization of nanocomposites (made from graphene, various kinds of GOs, heteroatom-doped GOs), (b) on methods for functionalization of composites (with other carbon nanomaterials, metal nanoparticles, metal oxide and metal sulfide nanoparticles), (c) on functionalization with inorganic materials including polyoxometalates, hexacyanoferrates, minerals), (d) on functionalization with organic materials such as amino acids, surfactants, organic dyes, ionic liquids, macrocycles (including cyclodextrins, crown ethers and calixarenes), and (e) on functionalization with organometallics and with various other organic compounds, (f) on functionalizations with polymers such as conventional polymers, polyelectrolytes, conducting polymers, molecularly imprinted polymers, (g) on functionalization with biomolecules including proteins and nucleic acids. Abstract:A general method for the fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) porous graphene-based composite materials is reported. This method involves two consecutive electrochemical steps. Firstly, 3D graphene (ERGO) porous material is prepared electrochemically by reducing a concentrated graphene oxide dispersion. Subsequently, the second component is electrochemically deposited onto this 3D ERGO matrix, yielding graphene-based 3D porous composite material. The prepared graphene-based composite materials have a conductive graphene network as the matrix, onto which the second component is homogeneously coated. Conducting polymers, noble metal nanoparticles and metal oxide were successfully incorporated into ERGO architectures, demonstrating the versatility of this method. Taking the ERGO–polyaniline composite as an example, the influence of deposition rate on the morphology of the composite was investigated. Finally, the application of the composite materials prepared with our method was discussed. The high surface area and low electrolyte transport resistance make these electrosynthesized composites suitable electrode materials for electrochemical devices. The ERGO–polyaniline composite electrode showed a high specific capacitance of 716 F g−1 at 0.47 A g−1, and this capacitance could be maintained at 502 F g−1 as the discharge current density was increased up to 4.2 A g−1.
Electrodes modified with 3D graphene composites: a review on methods for preparation, properties and sensing applications

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) porous networks of planar 2D graphene have attractive features with respect to sensing. These include a large electroactive surface area, good inner and outer surface contact with the analyte, ease of loading with (bio)catalysts, and good electrochemical sensitivity. 3D free-standing graphene can even be used directly as an electrode. This review (with 140 refs.) covers the progress made in the past years. Following an introduction into the field (including definitions), a large section is presented that covers methods for the synthesis of 3D graphene (3DG) (including chemical vapor deposition, hydrothermal methods, lithography, support assisted synthesis and chemical deposition, and direct electrochemical methods). The next section covers the key features of 3DG and its composites for use in electrochemical sensors. This section is subdivided into sections on the uses of 3D porous graphene, 3DG composites with metals and metal oxides, composites consisting of 3DG and organic polymers, and electrodes modified with 3DG, 3DGs decorated with carbon nanotubes, and others. Abstract:Carbon nanotubes and cobalt nano-particles were compounded to the surface of the carbon fiber by the vapor deposition method and the electrochemical deposition method respectively. In this study, novel Co@carbon nanotubes (CNTs)@carbon fiber (CF) composites were fabricated to be electrode by a simple and facile approach. It increases the specific surface area, conductivity and catalytic activity of carbon fiber electrode. It can be used to detect nitrate ions.

Abstract:Graphene shows great potentials in electrochemical energy-related areas. To enhance its properties and corresponding electrochemical performance, recently, three-dimensional (3D) graphene-based materials especially monolithic porous graphene with encapsulated functional nanomaterials have arisen much research interest for electrochemical catalysis, lithium ion batteries (LIBs), lithium–sulfur batteries, supercapacitors, etc. With the enhanced structure properties such as interconnected graphene network, high volume-specific surface area and electronic conductivity, 3D monolithic graphene is more suitable for the fabrication of composite electrode materials in real devices. In this article, we discuss recent development in fabricating monolithic 3D graphene and their composites using template-directed methods and their applications in electrochemical energy-related areas.

Abstract:Graphene, a single-atom-thick monolayer of sp(2) carbon atoms perfectly arranged in a honeycomb lattice, is an emerging sensing material because of its extraordinary properties, such as exceptionally high specific surface area, electrical conductivity, and electrochemical potential window. In this study, we demonstrate that three-dimensional (3D), macroporous, highly conductive, and monolithic graphene foam synthesized by chemical vapor deposition represents a novel architecture for electrochemical electrodes. Being employed as an electrochemical sensor for detection of dopamine, 3D graphene electrode exhibits remarkable sensitivity (619.6 μA mM(-1) cm(-2)) and lower detection limit (25 nM at a signal-to-noise ratio of 5.6), with linear response up to ∼25 μM. And the oxidation peak of dopamine can be easily distinguished from that of uric acid - a common interferent to dopamine detection. We envision that the graphene foam provides a promising platform for the development of electrochemical sensors as well as other applications, such as energy storage and conversion.

Abstract:Integration of graphene into macroscopic architectures represents the first step toward creating a new class of graphene-based nanodevices. We report a novel yet simple approach to fabricate graphene fibers, a porous and monolithic macrostructure, from chemical vapor deposition grown graphene films. Graphene is first self-assembled from a 2D film to a 1D fiberlike structure in an organic solvent (e.g., ethanol, acetone) and then dried to give the porous and crumpled structure. The method developed here is scalable and controllable, delivering tunable morphology and pore structure by controlling the evaporation of solvents with suitable surface tension. The fibers are 20-50 μm thick, with a typical electrical conductivity of ∼1000 S/m. The cyclic voltammetric studies show typical capacitive behavior for the porous graphene fibers with good rate stability and capacitance values ranging from 0.6 to 1.4 mF/cm(2). Decorated with only 1-3 wt % MnO(2), the graphene/MnO(2) composites exhibit remarkable enhancement of combined performance both with respect to discharge capacitance (up to 12.4 mF/cm(2)) and cycling stability. This special structure could facilitate chemical doping and electrochemical energy storage and find applications in catalyst supports, sensors, supercapacitors, Li ion batteries, etc.

Abstract:A well-organized composite of graphene nanosheets decorated with FeC 2 O 4 particles was synthesized through a simple chemical precipitation method. The FeC 2 O 4 nanoparticles obtained were 100-150 nm in size and homogeneously anchored on graphene sheets as spacers to keep the neighboring sheets separated. The FeC 2 O 4 -graphene exhbited excellent performances in absorption propties and supercapacitor make potential uses as environment and energy storage materials in future.
