Abstract:The choline chloride-urea binary mixture in the molar ratio (1 : 2), commonly known as reline, is an archetypal solvent among deep eutectic solvents (DES). Neutron diffraction (ND) and empirical potential structure refinement (EPSR) results provided evidence that reline exhibits a peculiar structural transformation upon water addition that manifests in a sudden dewetting of the choline cations at ∼51 wt% water and, therefore, a non-monotonic variation of the choline-water and choline-choline coordination. Here, we study, through molecular dynamics (MD), the influence of water on the structure of a choline chloride : urea : water DES (1 : 2 : ζ; ζ = 0 to 40), to gain additional insight into the molecular source of this peculiar structural transformation. Five different force fields were investigated. Our results show that the ND/EPSR non-monotonic behavior of the choline-choline coordination is qualitatively reproduced by those force fields that describe more accurately the dynamics of the DES, namely, the diffusion and viscosity coefficients. However, the apparent increase of the choline-choline coordination at ζ > 10 (41 wt%) is associated with the drain of a particular first coordination sphere, rather than with a dewetting of the choline cations, as predicted by ND/EPSR. Thus, a monotonic increase of the choline-water coordination is found instead, as well as the emergence of a tetrahedral hydrogen bond network of water, opposite to ND/EPSR. The highest rate of depletion upon initial hydration is found for urea around choline (∼0.9 urea molecules/ζ), whereas choline depicts the highest rate of hydration (∼2.5 water molecules/ζ). These rates decrease with ζ and a structural transition that stabilizes above 41 wt% is observed, consistent with ND/EPSR results. Despite limitations in the force fields, we argue that the experimental and simulation opposite pictures could be related to an underestimation of water's hydrogen bond network portrayed by the EPSR method. Overall, a smoother transition from a DES to an aqueous solution of the DES components is portrayed by MD, compared with ND/EPSR.

Abstract:The nanostructure of a series of choline chloride/urea/water deep eutectic solvent mixtures was characterized across a wide hydration range by neutron total scattering and empirical potential structure refinement (EPSR). As the structure is significantly altered, even at low hydration levels, reporting the DES water content is important. However, the DES nanostructure is retained to a remarkably high level of water (ca. 42 wt % H<sub>2</sub> O) because of solvophobic sequestration of water into nanostructured domains around cholinium cations. At 51 wt %/83 mol % H<sub>2</sub> O, this segregation becomes unfavorable, and the DES structure is disrupted; instead, water-water and DES-water interactions dominate. At and above this hydration level, the DES-water mixture is best described as an aqueous solution of DES components.

Effect of water on the thermo-physical properties of Reline: An experimental and molecular simulation based approach

Abstract:Increasing applications of ionic liquids and their analogues, namely Deep Eutectic Solvents (DESs), requires further investigation into the effect of moisture content on the physico-chemical characteristics of these fluids. Although it is common practice to synthesize these fluids in a moisture-controlled environment, as moisture is generally considered to have an impact on their properties, there are no systematic studies on this. We herein examine the effects of water on Reline, a Type-III DES composed of urea and choline chloride. Experiments were performed to obtain the physical properties of aqueous Reline solution. We observed moderate changes in density, speed of sound, refractive index, and pH with increasing water fraction; however, the change in viscosity and conductivity was strong and exponential. In addition, molecular dynamics simulations were performed to analyze the intermolecular interactions of Reline and aqueous Reline solutions. The simulations primarily present the significance of urea-anion interaction to explain the low melting point of the DES. In the presence of water, the anion is preferentially hydrated as compared to urea or the cation. More interestingly, simulations help to classify the effects of water into different regimes. At low water fractions (<5%) the urea-urea interactions are enhanced, as is revealed through the hydrogen bond analysis. Beyond 25% water fractions, the components of Reline are individually hydrated and have high diffusivity, which is further reflected in the change in transport properties. The results presented herein provide valuable information on aqueous Reline solutions both in terms of experimental data and molecular insights, which in turn, we believe, might assist in developing further applications of Reline and other related DESs.

Abstract:The advantages of deep eutectic solvent (DES), such as non-toxic, non-flammable, low vapor pressure and low cost, make it a green solvent for capturing carbon dioxide. Adding water can change the nanostructures of DES and thus significantly influent the physical and chemical properties. At present, most researches focus on the theoretical study while few experimental studies on the effect of water on the thermal conductivity of DES. In this paper, the 3 omega experimental system was improved using a two wire structure to eliminate the end effect and measured the thermal conductivities of the DES composed of choline chloride and ethylene glycol and its aqueous solution to study the effect of water on the thermal conductivities. The uncertainty of thermal conductivity is less than 4%. The second-order Scheffe polynomial was modified to make it more suitable for fitting the thermal conductivities of the mixtures containing DES. The average absolute relative deviation calculated by the equation is 2.16%, which corroborates the high accuracy of the improved equation. (C) 2022 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Insights into the role of molar ratio and added water in the properties of choline chloride and urea-based eutectic mixtures and their cellulose swelling capacity

Abstract:Eutectic mixtures and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are promising green media for the pre-treatment of lignocellulose materials. They can be harnessed for the swelling of cellulose and further facilitate cellulose hydrolysis, derivatization, and production of cellulose-based (nano) materials. Several studies indicated that water can take part in the formation of the nanostructure of DES; however, it is still unclear how additional water influences many important properties and functioning of DES, especially when the molar ratio of compounds differs from the eutectic point composition. Here, viscosity, pH, conductivity, solvatochromic and solvatomagnetic solvent parameters, and fiber swelling capacity of choline chloride and urea mixtures demonstrating different molar ratios were investigated in the presence and absence of added water. The participation of water in the formation of molecular clusters with choline chloride and urea was indicated by viscosity, pH, and conductivity measurements. Hydrogen bond acceptor values of aqueous mixtures increased as a function of water content, and the results obtained using both methods were in line, indicating their suitability for the determination of hydrogen bond acidity of aqueous choline chloride-urea mixtures. However, hydrogen bond basicity determined by solvatochromic and magnetic methods exhibited almost opposite trends. The close investigation of the chemical shift of solvatomagnetic probes indicated that the chemical environment of the choline chloride-urea (1 : 2) mixture remained constant until the water content of 30 wt% was in line with previous molecular simulations. When cellulose fibers were treated with mixtures under mixing, the non-ideality of the choline chloride-urea mixture and the absence of water were found to be advantageous; however, aqueous mixtures efficiently increased the diameters of cellulose fibers in the absence of mixing, and water-containing mixtures appeared to be appealing systems for cellulose pretreatments.

Abstract:Amine-based deep eutectic solvents have the advantages of easy preparation, extremely low vapor pressure, stable biodegradation and high CO2 loading, which has become the most potential CO2 absorbent. In this work, the amine-based functionalized DES of choline chloride + methyldiethanolamine with different molar ratios were successfully prepared, and the densities and viscosities of DES aqueous solutions were measured from 303.15 K to 333.15 K. The effects of DES composition, water content and temperature on the excess molar volume, partial molar volume, apparent molar volume, limiting partial molar volume and viscosity deviation were investigated. The hydration and intermolecular interaction in DES solution were analyzed. The critical concentration of water in solution was determined under the premise of maintaining DES hydrogen bond network.

Abstract:We report quantum chemical calculations performed on three popular deep eutectic solvents (DESs) in order to elucidate the molecular interactions, charge transfer interactions, and thermodynamics associated with these systems. The DESs studied comprise 1:2 choline chloride/urea (reline), 1:2 choline chloride/ethylene glycol (ethaline), and 1:1 choline chloride/malonic acid (maloline). The excellent correlation between calculated and experimental vibrational spectra allowed for identification of dominant interactions in the DES systems. The DESs were found to be stabilized by both conventional hydrogen bonds and C-H···O/C-H···π interactions between the components. The hydrogen-bonding network established in the DES is clearly distinct from that which exists within the neat hydrogen-bond donor dimer. Charge decomposition analysis indicates significant charge transfer from choline and chloride to the hydrogen-bond donor with a higher contribution from the cation, and a density of states analysis confirms the direction of the charge transfer. Consequently, the sum of the bond orders of the choline-Cl(-) interactions in the DESs correlates directly with the melting temperatures of the DESs, a correlation that offers insight into the effect of the tuning of the choline-Cl(-) interactions by the hydrogen-bond donors on the physical properties of the DESs. Finally, the differences in the vibrational entropy changes upon DES formation are consistent with the trend in the overall entropy changes upon DES formation.

Abstract:Two- and three-component mixtures were prepared using the monosubstituted urea of 1-methylurea (Um) and 1-hydroxyurea (Uh) as hydrogen bond donors, and guanidine monohydrochloride (GuHCl) as a hydrogen bond acceptor. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) thermograms and the solution-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra of the mixtures were compared with those of a deep eutectic solvent (DES) composed of urea (U) and GuHCl. At room temperature, 2Um-GuHCl was a DES in the supercooled state unlike solid state 2 U-GuHCl. Conversely, 2Uh-GuHCl did not form a DES. The methylation of urea resulted in the weakening of the hydrogen bonding of Cl − with others.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulations have been carried out for glycerol–water–sodium chloride ternary solution due to its important role in cryopreservation engineering. The radial distribution functions for atom pairs potentially related to C–H ··· O and O–H ··· O hydrogen bonds were calculated. The radial distribution functions for the H (connected to C)–O atom pair do not exhibit peaks between 2 and 3 Å, whereas the radial distribution functions for the C–O atom pair exhibit distinct peaks between 3 and 4 Å. The reason for this is because most C–H ··· O geometries are bent and deviate from linearity. The ratios of acceptor to donor numbers for water and glycerol molecules decrease as the solute concentration increases. A characteristic concentration has been found that divides solutions with different mechanisms. Below the characteristic concentration, the melting temperature is linearly related to the ratio of acceptor to donor number for water molecules, whereas above the characteristic concentration, the melting temperature is linearly related to the ratio of acceptor to donor number for glycerol molecules. Further studies indicate that the relations are independent of hydrogen bonding criteria and temperature.

Abstract:AbstractThe low-temperature dissolution mechanism of chitin in NaOH/urea aqueous solution has not been well established yet, especially at a temperature that lowers the crystallization temperature of both NaOH and urea. Using multiple nuclei (1H, 15N and 23Na) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) methods, we find that the ternary NaOH/urea/D2O system, different from the fully frozen binary NaOH–D2O system, exhibits solid-liquid phase coexistence below −40 °C, and the residual liquid phase consists of certain concentrations of NaOH (10 wt%), urea (13 wt%) and D2O at −40 °C. Our NMR results further demonstrate that chitin dissolves in the residual liquid phase (containing 5–10 wt% NaOH and 8–12 wt% urea) at low temperatures (−40 and −70 °C). An important role of urea is enhancing the low-temperature stability of NaOH aqueous solutions and then increasing the dissolution temperature range of chitin, thus providing an essential low-temperature liquid environment for chitin dissolution.

Abstract:Two imidazolium chloride ionic liquids (ILs) were mixed with urea for chitosan dissolution. Ionic liquids were [Amim]Cl and [Etmim]Cl (1-allyl-3-methyl-imidazolium chloride and 3-methyl-1-(ethylacetyl)imidazolium chloride, respectively). Physicochemical properties of neat ILs and IL-Urea solutions (including density, viscosity, conductivity, β value, π* value, and thermogravimetric analysis), were thoroughly investigated. Dissolution performance of chitosan in IL-Urea solutions was determined.Chitobiose (KET) as model chitosan structure, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were used to discuss the interactions between IL, urea, and chitobiose, and to clarify the different physicochemical properties of ILs, IL-Urea solutions. Also DFT simulation results were used for elucidating the influence of different cationic substituents and urea addition for chitosan dissolution.[Etmim]Cl showed higher density, viscosity, conductivity, β, and π* value than those of [Amim]Cl. These results revealed strong hydrogen bonds among [Etmim]Cl owing to the carboxylic acid ester group than allyl group of [Amim]Cl. Densities, viscosities, and π* values of IL-Urea solutions increased with increasing urea content. Conductivities and β values of IL-Urea solutions decreased with the increase of urea content at same temperature. The thermal stability of [Amim]Cl-Urea mixture increased when urea content increased from 10% to 30%, which was different from [Bmim]Cl-Urea melt. The thermal stability of [Etmim]Cl-Urea mixture was different to that of [Amim]Cl-Urea mixture.Urea was accommodated in ILs, forming hydrogen bonds with both the anion and cation in ILs, which changed the molecular interactions of ILs. The influence of different substituents in imidazolium ILs and urea addition on chitosan dissolution were analyzed using experimental determination and DFT calculations. Cationic substituents of imidazolium ILs play an extraordinary role in hydrogen bonds formation with chitobiose, so to strengthen chitosan dissolution. The information obtained would provide a guide for designing novel IL solvent systems for chitosan dissolution.
On the composition and isomerism effect in the thermal and structural properties of choline chloride/hydroxyphenol deep eutectic solvents

Abstract:We have carried out a comparative study on three sets of eutectic mixtures based on choline chloride (ChCl) and hydroxyphenol isomers having two hydroxyl groups in the ortho-, meta-, and para-positions of the aromatic ring, namely catechol (Cate), resorcinol (Reso), and hydroquinone (Hydro), respectively. Differential scanning calorimetry highlighted a different thermal behavior of the mixtures depending on the composition and precursor isomerism. These systems behave as deep eutectic solvents (DESs) with the exception of the ChCl/Cate mixture at a 1 : 0.75 molar ratio, the ChCl/Reso mixtures at 1 : 2 and 1 : 3 molar ratios, and the ChCl/Hydro mixture at a 1 : 3 molar ratio. Infrared spectroscopy measurements and molecular dynamics simulations show that the stronger hydrogen-bonding (H-bonding) in the mixed states compared to the pure precursors is key for the formation of a DES. This interaction is mostly reliant on interconnected chloride anion coordination shells thanks to the two hydroxyl groups of the hydroxyphenol molecules, which can bridge between different anions to form an extended H-bond network. This structural arrangement maximizes the interactions and is enhanced by the 1 : 0.75 and 1 : 1 molar ratios, while increasing the hydroxyphenol concentration translates into a lowering of the total number of H-bonds formed in the mixture. This is the basis for the different thermal behavior and points to nearly equimolar compositions between the components, as ideally suited to achieve a DES from these precursors. The obtained insights are able to explain the structure-property relationships for the studied systems and are deemed useful for more conscious development of these inherently tuneable solvents.

Abstract:MD simulations of the fatty acid‐based DES mixed with water were performed at three different temperatures. The results showed that significant differences in the intermolecular interaction of DESs were observed in the adjacent water. In general, the interaction between the two HBA and HBD has decreased dramatically with increasing temperature. Application of deep eutectic solvents based on fatty acids in different fields of biological and therapeutic sciences, such as novel hydrophobic Volatile organic compounds (VOC) absorbents, etc. However, industries need knowledge and precise investigation of the structural and dynamic properties of these solvents. In this work, the effect of water on the dynamical and structural properties of the binary mixtures of choline chloride+two types of Fatty acids; Lauric (LUA), and Myristic (MRA) acids have been investigated at T=343 K, 443 K, 543 K. An additional NPT production run of 30 ns was considered for the binary mixtures. In order to understand the effective interactions in the formation of the eutectic mixture based on fatty acid and choline chloride, the combined distribution functions (CDFs) involving the radial distribution functions (RDFs) and the angular distribution functions (ADFs), the hydrogen‐bonding network, and spatial distribution functions (SDFs), interaction energies between species were calculated for the binary mixtures. Also, the dynamical properties of DESs have been evaluated by calculating the mean‐square displacement (MSD), the velocity autocorrelation function (VACF) of the centers of mass of the molecules, and the self‐diffusion coefficient.

Abstract:Deep eutectic solvent (DES) shows excellent absorption performance in the field of CO2 capture. It is considered as a new green absorption solvent to replace monoethanolamine. In the industry, the presence of water not only affects the structural stability of the solvent, but also affects its thermophysical properties. In this work, three kinds of hydrophobic DES were prepared. Based on the study of their structural characteristics and thermal stability, the density and viscosity of DES with water mixture were measured in the temperature range of 298.15 - 338.15 K at atmospheric pressure. It was demonstrated that the trace water did not destroy the structure of DES, but it formed hydrogen bonds with DES. The increase water destroyed the structure of DES and formed hydrogen bonds with hydrogen bond donor (HBD) and hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA), respectively. Moreover, the hard sphere model was applied to study the viscosity, and after introducing the binary interaction parameter, the average absolute relative deviation of the mixture reduced to 4.4 - 7.7 %.

Abstract:Chitosan dissolution system with [Emim]Ac (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate) and urea was designed for homogeneous chemical modification of chitosan. Physicochemical properties of [Emim]Ac and [Emim]Ac-urea, such as density, solvatochromic parameters etc, were thoroughly investigated. NMR and FTIR spectra of [Emim]Ac-Urea solution were tested for determination of interaction between [Emim]Ac and urea. Obvious chemical shift change (Δd) of typical atoms (H2, H11, C10, and C12) in [Emim]Ac-urea indicated that strong hydrogen bonds were formed between [Emim]Ac and urea. Chitosan dissolution performance in [Emim]Ac-Urea solution was studied. Density functional theory (DFT) simulations were carried out to discuss the interactions between [Emim]Ac, urea, and chitosan. Four kinds hydrogen bonds (CH/O, CH/N, NH/O, NH/N), and eight hydrogen bonds, were formed in chitobiose-[Emim]Ac-urea. In particular, anion acetate of [Emim]Ac, hydrogen atoms and nitrogen of urea formed strong hydrogen bonds with oxygen atoms, amide, and hydroxyl in chitobiose. The information obtained would provide a guide for the development of novel solvent systems for chitosan dissolution and homogeneous chemical modification.
Determination of Solubility and Nucleation Kinetics of Valnemulin Hydrochloride Solvate

Abstract:Dissolution and nucleation are the two indispensable processes to be investigated in order to understand crystallization behavior of a compound. In this study, the crystalline valnemulin hydrochloride water–ethanol solvate (VHWES) was successfully prepared by the solution crystallization method. The solubility of VHWES in ethanol + water binary solvents was measured at eight different temperatures from 278.15 to 313.15 K using a static analytical method, and these solubility data was correlated by several different thermodynamic models. The model parameters were calculated and analyzed based on the difference between calculated results and measured solubility data. It was found that the results correlated by thermodynamic models are in good agreement with the measured solubilities. Furthermore, the nucleation process of VHWES in the ethanol + water (molar ratio of 1:1) system was investigated in detail. The induction times of nucleation and metastable zone width were measured at various temperatures under different supersaturations, and interfacial energies were calculated using classical nucleation theory. The results reveal that homogeneous nucleation predominates under high supersaturation while heterogeneous nucleation predominates under low supersaturation.

Abstract:The densities and viscosities of choline chloride/urea deep eutectic solvents (DESs) at molar ratios of 1:1.5, 1:2, and 1:2.5 (abbreviated as [ChCl][Urea]1.5, [ChCl][Urea]2 and [ChCl][Urea]2.5) were measured in this work. In addition, the effects of ethanol on the density and viscosity of choline choloride/urea DESs were also investigated. The experimental density and viscosity data were obtained from 303.15 K to 323.15 K at atmospheric pressure. The measurements were carried out using digital vibrating U-tube densimeter and Ubbelohde capillary viscometer. The Jouyban-Acree model was used to correlate the experimental density and viscosity data. In addition, for comparison purpose, the viscosity model based on the preferential solution theory was also used for the viscosity correlation. The excess molar volumes and viscosity deviations of the studied mixtures were calculated from the experimental data, and the results were analyzed. The Redlich-Kister equation was used to correlate the excess molar volumes and viscosity deviations of the ethanol/[ChCl][Urea]x mixtures.

Interplay of ethaline and water dynamics in a hydrated eutectic solvent: Deuteron and oxygen magnetic resonance studies of aqueous ethaline

Abstract:The impact of hydration on the reorientational dynamics of the deep eutectic solvent (DES) ethaline, a 2:1 molar mixture of ethylene glycol and choline chloride was studied. Its overall response was explored by means of shear mechanical rheology. To achieve component-selective insights into the dynamics of this material, isotope-edited deuteron and oxygen spin-lattice and spin-spin relaxometry as well as stimulated-echo spectroscopy were applied and yielded motional correlation times from above room temperature down to the highly vis-cous regime. For all temperatures the cholinium anion was found to reorient two times faster than ethylene glycol, while the water and the ethylene glycol molecules display very similar mobilities. While hydration enhances the component dynamics with respect to that of dry ethaline, the present findings reveal that it does not detectably increase the heterogeneity of the solvent. Merely, the timescale similarity that is found for the hydrogen bond donor and the water molecules over a particularly wide temperature range impressively attests to the stability of the native solvent structure in the "water-in-DES" regime.
