Abstract:In this work, we investigated in detail the structural characteristics of mixtures of choline chloride and urea with different urea contents by performing molecular dynamic (MD) simulations, and offer possible explanations for the low melting point of the eutectic mixture of choline chloride and urea with a ratio of 1:2. The insertion of urea molecules was found to change the density distribution of cations and anions around the given cations significantly, disrupting the long-range ordered structure of choline chloride. Moreover, with increasing urea concentration, the hydrogen bond interactions between choline cations and Cl- anions decreased, while those among urea molecules obviously increased. From the hydrogen bond lifetimes, it was found that a ratio of 1:2 between choline chloride and urea is necessary for a reasonable strength of hydrogen bond interaction to maintain the low melting point of the mixture of choline chloride with urea. In addition, it was also deduced from the interaction energies that a urea content of 67.7 % may make the interactions of cation-anion, cation-urea and anion-urea modest, and thus results in the lower melting point of the eutectic mixture of choline chloride and urea. The present results may offer assistance to some extent for understanding the physicochemical properties of the eutectic mixture of choline chloride and urea, and give valuable information for the further development and application of deep eutectic solvents.
Quantum Chemical Insight into the Interactions and Thermodynamics Present in Choline Chloride Based Deep Eutectic Solvents.

Abstract:We report quantum chemical calculations performed on three popular deep eutectic solvents (DESs) in order to elucidate the molecular interactions, charge transfer interactions, and thermodynamics associated with these systems. The DESs studied comprise 1:2 choline chloride/urea (reline), 1:2 choline chloride/ethylene glycol (ethaline), and 1:1 choline chloride/malonic acid (maloline). The excellent correlation between calculated and experimental vibrational spectra allowed for identification of dominant interactions in the DES systems. The DESs were found to be stabilized by both conventional hydrogen bonds and C-H···O/C-H···π interactions between the components. The hydrogen-bonding network established in the DES is clearly distinct from that which exists within the neat hydrogen-bond donor dimer. Charge decomposition analysis indicates significant charge transfer from choline and chloride to the hydrogen-bond donor with a higher contribution from the cation, and a density of states analysis confirms the direction of the charge transfer. Consequently, the sum of the bond orders of the choline-Cl(-) interactions in the DESs correlates directly with the melting temperatures of the DESs, a correlation that offers insight into the effect of the tuning of the choline-Cl(-) interactions by the hydrogen-bond donors on the physical properties of the DESs. Finally, the differences in the vibrational entropy changes upon DES formation are consistent with the trend in the overall entropy changes upon DES formation.

Abstract:Using （S）-（-）-2-chloropropionic acid ethyl ester and N-methylimidazole as raw materials, we designed and synthesized three N-methylimidazolium chiral ionic liquids by the nucleophilic substitution reaction or anion exchange reaction. These chiral ionic liquids structures were analyzed with structure optimization calculation, IR, and HNMR. Their reaction mechanism and physical chemistry properties were explored. As a result, these chiral ionic liquids possess optical activity, low melting point, high conductivity, and weak acidity, etc. They can serve as effective reaction media as well as chiral catalysts. They are presently being investigated as dispersion agent in molecular imprinting ployer in our laboratory.

Abstract:Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) emerged as green solvents for new generation technologies owing to their high chemical and thermal stability. Addition of restricted amount of organic solvents into the DESs plays a significant role in the improvement of thermodynamic and the transport properties to work as a potential solvent in process industries. In this paper, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were performed to understand the thermophysical and transport properties of choline chloride–based DES (reline) and primary alcohol (methanol and ethanol) mixture in relation to microscopic structure. Density, radial distribution function, coordination number, average number of H-bond, diffusion coefficient and spatial distribution function was calculated in order to understand the structure and involvement of H-bond network at an atomic level. H-bond and spatial distribution function analyses revealed that the chloride ion prefers to be spatially distributed around hydroxyl group of alcohol and found to be more pronounced upon increase in alcohol concentration. As a consequence, it was observed that the H-bonds between Cl− and urea decreases overall with the loading of alcohol and effect is more pronounced beyond a concentration of 0.4. Self-diffusion values for choline, Cl− and urea were found to be increased significantly upon increase in concentration of alcohol from 0.6 to 0.8. Overall, our simulation points to the interplay and interactions between the chloride ions and the solvents in determining the structural and transport properties of choline chloride–based DES.

Abstract:Amine-based deep eutectic solvents have the advantages of easy preparation, extremely low vapor pressure, stable biodegradation and high CO2 loading, which has become the most potential CO2 absorbent. In this work, the amine-based functionalized DES of choline chloride + methyldiethanolamine with different molar ratios were successfully prepared, and the densities and viscosities of DES aqueous solutions were measured from 303.15 K to 333.15 K. The effects of DES composition, water content and temperature on the excess molar volume, partial molar volume, apparent molar volume, limiting partial molar volume and viscosity deviation were investigated. The hydration and intermolecular interaction in DES solution were analyzed. The critical concentration of water in solution was determined under the premise of maintaining DES hydrogen bond network.

Abstract:The hydrogen bond network structure of choline chloride/urea deep eutectic solvents(DESs)-water mix ? tures was studied in the range of 5%-95% water content by near infrared spectroscopy. Through the analysis of the near-infrared spectra after choline chloride and urea mixing, the spectral feature of the interaction between urea -NH group and choline chloride Cl- was found, indicating that the formation of NH & BULL;& BULL;& BULL;Cl- was the reason for the decrease of DESs melting point. Through the near-infrared spectrum analysis of DESs-water mixtures with different water contents, the spectral information of the interaction between water molecules and between water molecules and the -NH and C=O groups in urea was found. Water mainly exists in three kinds of structures, including the bulk water, the hydrated water with urea C=O and the bridge water connect -NH groups. The bulk water destroyed NH & BULL;& BULL;& BULL;Cl- in DESs, reducing the stability of the system, while the bridge water between urea -NH molecules and the hydrated water with urea C=O increase the stability of the system. The relative content of the three water structures in DESs is related to the water content. The water content of 40%-80% can not only effectively reduce the viscosity of the system, but also maintain the properties of DESs.

Abstract:A range of techniques including physical property measurements, neutron scattering experiments, ab initio molecular dynamics, and classical molecular dynamics simulations are used to probe the structural, thermodynamic, and transport properties of a deep eutectic solvent comprised of a 1:2 molar ratio of choline chloride and ethylene glycol. This mixture, known as Ethaline, has many desirable properties for use in a range of applications, and therefore, understanding its liquid structure and transport properties is of interest. Simulation results are able to capture experimental densities, diffusivities, viscosities, and structure factors extremely well. The solvation environment is dynamic and dominated by different hydrogen bonding interactions. Dynamic heterogeneities resulting from hydrogen bonding interactions are quantified. Rotational dynamics of molecular dipole moments of choline and ethylene glycol are computed and found to exhibit a fast and slow mode.
Insights into the role of molar ratio and added water in the properties of choline chloride and urea-based eutectic mixtures and their cellulose swelling capacity

Abstract:Eutectic mixtures and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are promising green media for the pre-treatment of lignocellulose materials. They can be harnessed for the swelling of cellulose and further facilitate cellulose hydrolysis, derivatization, and production of cellulose-based (nano) materials. Several studies indicated that water can take part in the formation of the nanostructure of DES; however, it is still unclear how additional water influences many important properties and functioning of DES, especially when the molar ratio of compounds differs from the eutectic point composition. Here, viscosity, pH, conductivity, solvatochromic and solvatomagnetic solvent parameters, and fiber swelling capacity of choline chloride and urea mixtures demonstrating different molar ratios were investigated in the presence and absence of added water. The participation of water in the formation of molecular clusters with choline chloride and urea was indicated by viscosity, pH, and conductivity measurements. Hydrogen bond acceptor values of aqueous mixtures increased as a function of water content, and the results obtained using both methods were in line, indicating their suitability for the determination of hydrogen bond acidity of aqueous choline chloride-urea mixtures. However, hydrogen bond basicity determined by solvatochromic and magnetic methods exhibited almost opposite trends. The close investigation of the chemical shift of solvatomagnetic probes indicated that the chemical environment of the choline chloride-urea (1 : 2) mixture remained constant until the water content of 30 wt% was in line with previous molecular simulations. When cellulose fibers were treated with mixtures under mixing, the non-ideality of the choline chloride-urea mixture and the absence of water were found to be advantageous; however, aqueous mixtures efficiently increased the diameters of cellulose fibers in the absence of mixing, and water-containing mixtures appeared to be appealing systems for cellulose pretreatments.

Abstract:Two imidazolium chloride ionic liquids (ILs) were mixed with urea for chitosan dissolution. Ionic liquids were [Amim]Cl and [Etmim]Cl (1-allyl-3-methyl-imidazolium chloride and 3-methyl-1-(ethylacetyl)imidazolium chloride, respectively). Physicochemical properties of neat ILs and IL-Urea solutions (including density, viscosity, conductivity, β value, π* value, and thermogravimetric analysis), were thoroughly investigated. Dissolution performance of chitosan in IL-Urea solutions was determined.Chitobiose (KET) as model chitosan structure, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were used to discuss the interactions between IL, urea, and chitobiose, and to clarify the different physicochemical properties of ILs, IL-Urea solutions. Also DFT simulation results were used for elucidating the influence of different cationic substituents and urea addition for chitosan dissolution.[Etmim]Cl showed higher density, viscosity, conductivity, β, and π* value than those of [Amim]Cl. These results revealed strong hydrogen bonds among [Etmim]Cl owing to the carboxylic acid ester group than allyl group of [Amim]Cl. Densities, viscosities, and π* values of IL-Urea solutions increased with increasing urea content. Conductivities and β values of IL-Urea solutions decreased with the increase of urea content at same temperature. The thermal stability of [Amim]Cl-Urea mixture increased when urea content increased from 10% to 30%, which was different from [Bmim]Cl-Urea melt. The thermal stability of [Etmim]Cl-Urea mixture was different to that of [Amim]Cl-Urea mixture.Urea was accommodated in ILs, forming hydrogen bonds with both the anion and cation in ILs, which changed the molecular interactions of ILs. The influence of different substituents in imidazolium ILs and urea addition on chitosan dissolution were analyzed using experimental determination and DFT calculations. Cationic substituents of imidazolium ILs play an extraordinary role in hydrogen bonds formation with chitobiose, so to strengthen chitosan dissolution. The information obtained would provide a guide for designing novel IL solvent systems for chitosan dissolution.

Abstract:Deep-eutectic solvents (DESs) are a new class of green solvents. Here, we report the hydrogen bonding and structural properties of the archetypal DES ethaline, a mixture of choline chloride (ChCl) and ethylene glycol (EG) of a 1:2 molar ratio, and its pseudo-binary mixtures with acetonitrile. The investigations were carried out employing Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy combined with quantum chemical calculations. Excess and two-dimensional (2D)-correlation spectroscopies were used to identify favorable species in the solutions and to explore the heterogeneity. The results show that the mixing process is the transformation from ethaline and CH3CN dimer to the complexes of ethaline-1CH3CN and ethaline-2CH3CN, together with the increased percentages of the EG dimer, EG trimer, and CH3CN monomer with respect to their total amounts in the mixtures. Theoretical calculations show that, for ChCl, the positive charge is located at the methyl groups and methylenes, rendering their ability to form hydrogen bonds. Adding CH3CN to ethaline can hardly break apart the doubly ionic hydrogen bonds between Ch+ and Cl-. The cosolvent molecules mainly surround the core structure of ethaline, forming noncovalent hydrogen bonds with hydroxyl groups of EG/Ch+ but not Cl-. These in-depth studies on the properties of ethaline and CH3CN/CD3CN mixed solvents may shed light on exploring their applications.
Composition-Property Relationships of Choline Based Eutectic Solvents: Impact of the hydrogen bond donor and CO 2 saturation

Abstract:Eutectic solvents are tunable for targeted applications through the functional groups in their hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA) and hydrogen bond donor (HBD) components, as well as the HBA:HBD composition ratio. This study examines the properties of choline-based eutectics containing imidazole, phenol, pyrrole-2-carbonitrile, and 1,2,4-triazole HBAs, and ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, and ethanolamine HBDs. The viscosity, conductivity, degree of hydrogen bonding, thermal stability, and solvatochromic properties are examined as a function of HBA, HBD, and the composition. These studies revealed a predominant dependence of physical properties on the HBD and determined that the strong hydrogen bonding in phenol and imidazole based system lead to higher viscosities and lower conductivities– critical parameters for CO2 capture and electrochemical conversion. The developed eutectic solvents were further evaluated in terms of their potential for CO2 capture capacity and electrochemical stabilities. Solvatochromic properties were found to correlate with CO2 capacities, demonstrating the tunability of these solvents for CO2 capture. The quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) analysis demonstrated the ability to predict viscosities and CO2 capture capacities (< 25% deviation) through multi linear regression method utilizing five molecular descriptors. This work highlights the role of functionalized HBAs and HBDs on the physical, thermal, and electrochemical properties of eutectic solvents as they relate to CO2 capture and electrochemical processes.

Abstract:L-(+)-α-(positive butyl)-leucine ethyl ester bromide chiral ionic liquid was synthesized by using microwave-assisted synthesis method and L-(+)-α-(positive butyl)-leucine ethyl ester terafluoroborate and hexafluorophosphate chiral ionic liquids were synthesized by the anion exchange reaction. The structures were characterized by IR, 1HNMR and structure optimization calculation. The results of studies on physicochemical properties show that they possess better thermal stability, solubility, bio-solubility and high conductivity. On the composition and isomerism effect in the thermal and structural properties of choline chloride/hydroxyphenol deep eutectic solvents

Abstract:We have carried out a comparative study on three sets of eutectic mixtures based on choline chloride (ChCl) and hydroxyphenol isomers having two hydroxyl groups in the ortho-, meta-, and para-positions of the aromatic ring, namely catechol (Cate), resorcinol (Reso), and hydroquinone (Hydro), respectively. Differential scanning calorimetry highlighted a different thermal behavior of the mixtures depending on the composition and precursor isomerism. These systems behave as deep eutectic solvents (DESs) with the exception of the ChCl/Cate mixture at a 1 : 0.75 molar ratio, the ChCl/Reso mixtures at 1 : 2 and 1 : 3 molar ratios, and the ChCl/Hydro mixture at a 1 : 3 molar ratio. Infrared spectroscopy measurements and molecular dynamics simulations show that the stronger hydrogen-bonding (H-bonding) in the mixed states compared to the pure precursors is key for the formation of a DES. This interaction is mostly reliant on interconnected chloride anion coordination shells thanks to the two hydroxyl groups of the hydroxyphenol molecules, which can bridge between different anions to form an extended H-bond network. This structural arrangement maximizes the interactions and is enhanced by the 1 : 0.75 and 1 : 1 molar ratios, while increasing the hydroxyphenol concentration translates into a lowering of the total number of H-bonds formed in the mixture. This is the basis for the different thermal behavior and points to nearly equimolar compositions between the components, as ideally suited to achieve a DES from these precursors. The obtained insights are able to explain the structure-property relationships for the studied systems and are deemed useful for more conscious development of these inherently tuneable solvents.
2H and 13C nuclear spin relaxation unravels dynamic heterogeneities in deep eutectic solvents of ethylene glycol, glycerol, or urea with choline chloride

Abstract:Using deuteron spin-lattice and spin-spin relaxometry, the reorientational dynamics of ethaline (choline chloride/ethylene glycol) and reline (choline chloride/urea) are studied in a component-selective, isotope-edited manner over a wide temperature range, thereby complementing previous work on glyceline (choline chloride/glycerol). Differences in the hydrogen bond propensities effectuate that in reline and glyceline, the choline ions move faster than the hydrogen bond donors, glycerol and urea; in ethaline, the ethylene glycol molecules are reorienting faster. For glyceline and reline, the increase in the corresponding time scale ratio indicates a pronounced strengthening of the glycerol and urea networks upon cooling, while in ethaline, the time scale ratio remains essentially constant. For the three deep eutectic solvents, a comparison of the present component-selective results with the dielectric time constants shows that the latter are primarily sensitive to the dynamics of the respective hydrogen bond donors. In a Walden-type plot, the reorientation rates, selectively determined for the hydrogen bond donors and acceptors, are compared with their conductivity and fluidity, revealing that the dynamics of the choline ions relate most directly to the charge transport.

Abstract:Liquid densities of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) such as choline chloride + glycerol {[ChCl][Gly]}, choline chloride + acetic acid {[ChCl][AA]}; ionic liquids (ILs), such as 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate {[EMIM][HSO4]}, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethyl sulfate {[EMIM][EtSO4]}, and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate {[BMIM][Ac]}; and mixture of DESs + ILs as well as organic mixtures, such as n-butyl acetate + butanol and n-butyl acetate + acetic acid were measured at different temperatures from 293.15 to 343.15 K with an increase of 5 K. From this measured density, isobaric expansivity, excess molar volume, partial molar volume, excess partial molar volume, and apparent molar volume were calculated to understand and characterize the solution behavior as well as solvent–solvent interactions for the entire mole fraction at different temperatures. The excess molar properties showing positive deviation for DESs + ILs system, which indicates a creation of volume in the binary mixtures and disruption of H-bonds in the solution environment. Further, the sign and magnitude of all of the studied binary systems gave a good estimate of the attractive and disruptive interactions, chemical aggregation, H-bond formation, salt (choline chloride)–H (imidazolium) interaction, and salt (choline chloride)–O (acetate anion) interaction between those two components in the binary mixtures. The Redlich–Kister equation was used to fit the excess molar volume data and their corresponding regression coefficients (R2) were also found. The σ-profile and σ-potential for the compounds in the present study have been generated and analyzed by means of specific molecular interactions between all of the studied compounds using the conductor like screening model for real solvents model.

The experimental density and viscosity data were obtained from 303.15 K to 323.15 K at atmospheric pressure. The measurements were carried out using digital vibrating U-tube densimeter and Ubbelohde capillary viscometer. The Jouyban-Acree model was used to correlate the experimental density and viscosity data. In addition, for comparison purpose, the viscosity model based on the preferential solution theory was also used for the viscosity correlation. The excess molar volumes and viscosity deviations of the studied mixtures were calculated from the experimental data, and the results were analyzed. The Redlich-Kister equation was used to correlate the excess molar volumes and viscosity deviations of the ethanol/[ChCl][Urea]x mixtures.
Composition-Property Relationships of Choline Based Eutectic Solvents: Impact of the Hydrogen Bond Donor and CO2 Saturation

Abstract:Eutectic solvents are tunable for targeted applications through the functional groups in their hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA) and hydrogen bond donor (HBD) components, as well as the HBA:HBD composition ratio. This study examines the properties of choline-based eutectics containing imidazole, phenol, pyrrole-2-carbonitrile, and 1,2,4-triazole HBAs, and ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, and ethanolamine HBDs. The viscosity, conductivity, degree of hydrogen bonding, thermal stability, and solvatochromic properties are examined as a function of HBA, HBD, and the composition. These studies revealed a predominant dependence of physical properties on the HBD and determined that the strong hydrogen bonding in phenol and imidazole based system lead to higher viscosities and lower conductivities– critical parameters for CO2 capture and electrochemical conversion. The developed eutectic solvents were further evaluated in terms of their potential for CO2 capture capacity and electrochemical stabilities. Solvatochromic properties were found to correlate with CO2 capacities, demonstrating the tunability of these solvents for CO2 capture. The quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) analysis demonstrated the ability to predict viscosities and CO2 capture capacities (< 25% deviation) through multi linear regression method utilizing five molecular descriptors. This work highlights the role of functionalized HBAs and HBDs on the physical, thermal, and electrochemical properties of eutectic solvents as they relate to CO2 capture and electrochemical processes.

Abstract:Deep eutectic solvents (DESs), derived from the mixtures of two or more hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA) and hydrogen bond donor (HBD), were extensively reported as gas absorbents. In this work, four kinds of DESs were prepared from choline chloride (HBA) and glycerol, ethylene glycol, N-methylurea, and trifluoroacetamide. The molar ratio was fixed at 1:2 of choline chloride to HBD. New experimental results were reported for the solubility of NH3 in these DES over the temperature range of (303.15-333.15) K and pressures up to 580 kPa using isochoric saturation method. The molarity of NH3 in the DESs ranges up to 16.27 mol.kg(-1). The dependence of the NH3 solubility in the DESs on temperature and pressure were accurately represented by Henry's law model. Standard Gibbs energy, dissolution enthalpy and dissolution entropy were further deduced from Henry's law constant of NH3 in the DESs. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:Three different chiral ionic liquids, chloride (R)-(+)-β-(1-methyl-imidazole)–propio-nate, (R)-(+)-β-(1-methyl-imidazole)-propionate terafluoroborate and hexafluorophosphate, weresuccessfully synthesized via the nucleophilic substitution reaction and the anion metathesis reaction, with (S)-(-)-2-chloro-propionic acid as the chiral source. Structures of the chiral io-nic liquids have been characterized by the infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonancespectroscopy and quantum chemical structure optimization method. These new ionic materia-ls can be used as building blocks for the synthesis of ionic liquids.
