Abstract:It is unquestionably a great challenge to develop elastic cellulose nanofibril (CNF) based aerogels satisfying both excellent oil-water separation and efficient PM2.5 removal. In this work, the CNF based aerogel with a layersupport structure was design through CNF as the aerogel scaffold and compositing with bamboo activated charcoal (BAC) and Fe3O4 as the functional particles, followed by hydrophobic modification. The resultant aerogel displays ultra-low density (30.12 mg/cm3), good specific surface area (25.38 m2/g), magnetism (9.44 emu/g) and superhydrophobicity (water contact angle (WCA) of 153.8 degrees and slide angle (SA) of 7 degrees). Benefiting from high internal porosity of the layer-support structure, the system shows excellent absorption efficiency (16.79-51.93 g/g) for various oils and filtration efficiency (97.85 +/- 1.2%) for PM2.5 with a low pressure drop (58 Pa). As well as it also shows outstanding mechanical properties and able to maintain a high recovery of 75.4% at 50% strain (corresponding 25.29 kPa) due to the flexibility of the "support" structure given by methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS). Based on its simple preparation and excellent properties, the magnetic and superhydrophobic CNF/Fe3O4@BAC composite aerogel shows great potential in multifaceted separation technique and recycling of natural resources.

Abstract:Nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC)-based aerogels are ideal oil-sorbent materials, but the poor structural stability and hydrophilicity restrain their practical applications in the fields of oil/water separation. In the present work, we report a facile strategy for constructing a hydrophobic nanofibrillated cellulose aerogel for cyclic oil/water separation. Briefly, an aerogel matrix of C -g- PEI with multiple cross-linked network structures was constructed via the combined use of oxidized-NFC (ONC), polyethyleneimine (PEI), and ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (EGDE), followed by rapid in situ deposition of poly(methyl trichlorosilane) (PMTS) through a low-temperature gas-solid reaction. The resulting ONC-based aerogel (C -g- PEI-PMTS) exhibits the advantages of ultralight (53.80 mg/cm 3 ), high porosity (95.73 %), hydrophobicity (contact angle of 130.0°) and remarkable elasticity (95.86 %). Meanwhile, the composite aerogel of C -g- PEI-PMTS is extremely suitable for oil sorption-desorption by a simple mechanical squeezing method. After 10 cycles of sorption-desorption, the sorption capacity of the aerogel towards various oils reached almost the same level as in the first cycle. The filtration separation efficiency for the trichloromethane-water mixtures remained at 99 % after 50 cycles, demonstrating encouraging reusability. In summary, an efficient strategy to prepare NFC-based aerogel with highly compressible and hydrophobic properties is developed, which expands the applications of NFC in the fields of oil/water separation.

Abstract:As a novel nanoporous carbon material with high porosity, large specific surface area, excellent electrical conductivity and high temperature resistance, carbon aerogels have broad application prospects in the fields of catalyst carriers, energy storage and adsorption materials. In this work, the hydrophobic micro-convex rough interface cellulose carbon aerogels (CCAs) were fabricated via carbonization of cellulose-lithium bromide (LiBr) molten salt hydrate gelled system. The prepared CCAs shows a low density (0.016–0.023 g/cm3), high porosity (98.9–99.2 %), superior hydrophobicity (water contact angle over 135°) and excellent absorption of different oils and organic solvents. The absorption ability of CCAs 1.0-T800 for different oils and organic solvents can be 25–55 times its own weight. More importantly, the CCAs adsorbent can be reused by simple absorption/distillation method and still kept high-efficiency oil absorption capacity and excellent hydrophobicity after 5 absorption/elution cycles, displaying recyclability and robust stability. This study provides a green and facile way to fabrication of cellulose II carbon aerogels for application in spilled oil recovery, and exhibited highly promising as an economical, efficient and safe adsorbent for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Cellulose-based aerogels have attracted significant attention for oil/water separation due to their high porosity, large specific surface area and high adsorption capacity. However, their intrinsic hydrophilicity, and inadequate mechanical properties have often limited their practical applications. Traditional freeze-dried cellulose aerogels exhibit unsatisfactory elasticity and require a separate surface modification process to adjust the surface wettability. In this study, we present a novel one-pot fabrication strategy which simultaneously achieves the crosslinking of individual cellulose nanofibers and the hydrophobic modification of the surface wettability. Following directional freeze-drying, hydrophobic, superelastic, and anisotropic cellulose-based aerogel was prepared from the 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-oxyl (TEMPO)-oxidized cellulose nanofibers, isolated from harakeke (New Zealand native flax). The resulting aerogel exhibits a high water contact angle of 142°, good compressive recovery performance (85 % recovery of the original height after 100 compression cycles at 70 % strain), and outstanding adsorption capacity for various types of oil and organic solvents (80-105 g/g). Furthermore, the aerogel could also be used as a filter to separate the surfactant stabilized water-in-oil emulsions with high flux (782 L m-2 h-1) and high separation efficiency (98.7-99.2 %). The novel aerogel prepared in this study is expected to have great potential for practical applications in oily wastewater remediation.

Abstract:Cellulose-based carbon aerogels as biodegradable and renewable biomass materials have presented potential applications in oil/water separation. Herein, a novel carbon aerogel composed of natural microfibrils/regenerated cellulose (NM/RCA) was directly prepared by economical hardwood pulp as raw material using a novel co-solvent composed of deep eutectic solvent (DES) and N-methyl morpholine-N-oxide monohydrate (NMMO·H 2 O). In addition, the morphology and structure of the filiform natural microfibers could be remained after carbonized at 400 °C, which resulted in a low density (8–10 mg cm −3 ), high specific surface area (768.89 m 2 g −1 ) and high sorption capability. In addition, the aerogel exhibited high compressibility, outstanding elasticity, excellent fatigue resistance, and recyclability (80.5% height recovery after repeating 100 cycles at the strain of 80%). Due to the morphology and composition of the carbonized microfiber surface, the superhydrophobic materials with a water contact angle of 151.5°, could sorb various oils and organic solvents with 65–133 times its own weight and maintain 91.9% sorption capacity after 25 cycles. In addition, the aerogels could achieve the continuous separation of carbon tetrachloride (CCl 4 ) from water with a high flux rate of 11,718.8 L m −2 h −1 . Therefore, our prepared NM/RCA aerogels are anticipated to have broad potential applications in oil purification and contaminant remediation.

Abstract:The hydrophobic chain length of biomass-based aerogels used for oil–water separation was evaluated as a major parameter influencing the aerogels' hydrophobicity. The properties of the porous structure were enhanced by the hierarchical assembly of the aerogels with biopolymeric structural units and polymer mineralization. The cellulose network was strengthened through silanization, and the nanocellulose network was further enhanced through coating with mineralizers containing long-chain hydrophobic molecules. Interfacial engineering was employed to establish multiscale interactions through the freeze-drying-induced modification of cellulose nanofibers and mineralized coatings of long-chain alkyl polymers. The resulting hierarchically structured aerogel exhibits low density (11.4 kg/m 3 ), excellent mechanical compression properties across a wide temperature range (capable of enduring 100 cycles of compression), high porosity (99.2%), superhydrophobicity (152°), and recyclability. It maintains a 57.9% adsorption rate even after 40 adsorption–desorption tests, while also preserving its shape integrity. Moreover, it can be recycled and reused. At a temperature of 700 °C, the mass loss was only 44.47%, with excellent thermal stability. The aerogel can reduce oil pollutants in the ocean by adsorption, recover oil resources, and protect the natural environment. The assembly and optimization of nanofibrous matrix interfaces through the mineralization of long-chain polymers enhanced the performance of functionalized cellulose-based aerogels.

Abstract:Nowadays high porosity aerogels are widely applied in wastewater purification, while the fragility and unversatility of nascent cellulose aerogels limited the application in oil/water filtering separation. Here, highly compressible, elastic, superhydrophobic cellulose/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) composite aerogels were fabricated via combination of chemical cross-linking, freeze drying and silanization. The obtained cellulose/PVA aerogels exhibited durable superhydrophobicity with WCA of 156.6 °, even maintaining 155.0 ° after 30 days. Synergistic effects of physical entanglement, chemical cross-linking and H-bond network between cellulose and PVA molecular chains endowed the aerogels with excellent compressibility and recoverability. The aerogels exhibited maximum compressive stress of 490.7 kPa at 90% strain, even without reduction in mechanical strength under 70% compressive strain for 10 cycles. More importantly, the strengthened aerogels exhibited remarkable separation performances for both immiscible oil/water mixtures and surfactant-stabilized water-in-oil emulsions. Fascinating permeation flux of up to 7176.3 L m−2 h−1 and total separation amount as high as 4550.6 L m−2 with separation efficiency of 98.5% for water-in-cyclohexane emulsion were harvested. Thus, this work provides a green, sustainable and mass-producible cellulose-based aerogel for high-efficiency oily wastewater remediation.

Abstract:Adsorbent materials with high absorptive capacity, stable mechanical properties, greenness and economy are highly desirable for efficient removal and recovery of oil from wastewater. Herein, an ultralight, low-cost and reusable hydrophobic aerogel of cellulose acetate/polyethylene oxide hybrid nanofibers was developed through thermally crosslinking and organosilicon modification. Through thermal crosslinking and ice crystal template, a hierarchical pore structure was obtained which endowed the aerogel with mechanical stability and oil-absorption capacity. In addition, the structure was furtherly strengthened after chemical vapor deposition of methyl trichlorosilane good hydrophobicity (contact angle of 135.5°) can be realized. The surface-modified aerogel presented ultralow density (8.74 mg cm-3), excellent resilience (completely recover to its original height after 50 compression cycles), high absorption capacity (weight gain of 63-128 g/g) and reusability. Therefore, the nanofibrous aerogels with outstanding compressive resilience and reusability make it promising to meet the increasing demand in the field of oil pollution cleaning.

Abstract:<p>Efficient, convenient, economical and environmentally friendly materials have always been the first choice for solving environmental problems. In this work, stable carbonized and ordered hollow nanofiber aerogels were obtained under the action of directional freezing and calcination. The benzoxazine monomer (BA) in the nanofiber was polymerized in situ under the action of high temperature to crosslink the nanofibers, thereby further stabilizing the aerogel structure. The plastic deformation of the carbonized aerogel after oil absorption with 100 cycles of compression was 30%. The carbonized hollow nanofiber aerogels were superhydrophobic and oleophilic, which allowed selective absorption of oil upon contact with oily wastewater. As a similar density, the oil absorption performance of the hollow nanofiber aerogels was higher than that of the normal nanofiber aerogels, implying high efficiency of the hollow nanofiber aerogels. After compression, the dry sample could recover its shape in oil, indicating the resilience of the hollow nanofiber aerogel. Moreover, the cycle absorption experiment illustrated that low-toxicity ethanol could remove most of the oil adsorbed in the aerogels, and ensure stable performance during recycling. After five cycles, the hollow nanofiber aerogel still retained its the original shape without fiber falling off, reducing the secondary pollution to the environment. The present study provides a strategy for the design and fabrication of ordered hollow nanofiber aerogels for wastewater treatment and other potential applications.</p>

Abstract:<p>The aim of this study was to develop novel aerogels based on nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC), and chitosan (CS) for oily wastewater treatment. The quaternarized N-halamine siloxane monomer (QHS) was successfully synthesized and hydrolyzed to form quaternarized N-halamine siloxane polymer (PQHS) in the mixture of NCC and CS solution to improve the antibacterial properties of aerogels. The strong hydrophilicity of natural polymers NCC and CS and the microporous structure of aerogel endow the underwater oleophobic property. The applications of the aerogels as filter materials for oil/water separation are studied, and showed high separation efficiency of different types of oil/water mixtures. The presence of N-halamine structures in PQHS makes the aerogels effectively kill bacteria in oily sewage and inhibit the growth of bacteria on the surface of the materials. The properties of exceptional reusability, oil/water separation efficiency, and antibacterial efficacies render the aerogels as promising materials with potential applications in oily wastewater treatment.</p>

Abstract:A hydrophobic/oleophilic silica‐cellulose composite aerogel has been developed. It shows considerable absorption capacity for oils as well as excellent selective absorption of oils from oil‐water mixtures. A cellulose aerogel with very low overall density is fabricated by freeze‐drying aqueous cellulose solution. A hydrophobic/oleophilic cellulose aerogel is further fabricated by coating the cellulose aerogel with hexyltrimethoxysilane‐modified SiO2 nanoparticles. The features of the developed hydrophobic/oleophilic cellulose aerogel are characterized with density and porosity measurement, infrared spectroscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and contact angle measurement. Finally, the oil absorption performance of the developed hydrophobic/oleophilic cellulose aerogel is investigated. The results show that SiO2 nanoparticles have been successfully loaded on the surface of the aerogel backbone after fulfillment of fabrication, and the surface of the aerogel turns to be hydrophobic/oleophilic (water contact angle 131° and oil contact angle 0°). The oil absorption experiment results show that the absorption capacity for organic solvents is from 10 to 21 times the initial aerogel weight, depending on the density of the absorbed organic solvents. In addition, the aerogel still maintains good stability in high temperature, strong acid or strong base conditions. Furthermore, the aerogel also shows good performance in separating oil from oil–water mixtures. This hydrophobic/oleophilic cellulose aerogel can be a promising choice for remedying water pollution caused by oil contamination.

Abstract:Cellulose aerogel, a sustainable material characterized by low density and high porosity, demonstrates promising potential for addressing oil spill incidents. In this study, waste cotton stalk biomass was processed using formic acid and hydrogen peroxide to extract cellulose, resulting in the successful creation of a cost-effective aerogel. This material exhibits notable attributes: low density (21.1 mg cm −3 ), high porosity (91.5%), significant hydrophobicity (water contact angle of 147°), exceptional adsorption capacity (47.61 g g −1 ), and robust cycling performance (maintaining 94% adsorption capacity after 15 cycles). Moreover, the CNF/CS biomass aerogel boasts high mechanical strength and exceptional oil–water and emulsion separation properties. These characteristics position this aerogel as a promising solution for mitigating various sudden oil spill incidents, indicating its potential for widespread application.

Abstract:Cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) aerogels with controllable surface wettability were prepared by grafting poly( N, N-dimethylamino-2-ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) polymer brushes via surface-initiated atom-transfer radical polymerization. After grafting PDMAEMA polymer, the surface of the aerogel was hydrophobic. However, in the presence of CO2, the surface of the aerogel gradually changes from hydrophobic to hydrophilic. The porous structure and CO2-responsiveness of PDMAEMA brushes within the CNFs aerogels allowed for the on-off switching of the oil-water mixture separation process. These CNFs aerogels were recyclable and displayed attractive separation efficiency for oil-water mixture and surfactant-stabilized emulsions. Furthermore, the switchable surface wettability holds an advantage of avoiding oil-fouling, which will greatly improve its recyclability.
Kapok/regenerated Cellulose Based Carbon Aerogel Prepared at a Low-Temperature Carbonization for Oil/water Separation

Abstract:With the requirement of sustainable development in modern society, selective filtration and separation of oils and organic solvents from polluted wastewater is a critical and very important goal. Herein, a novel hydrophobic and oleophilic cellulose-based carbon aerogel composed of kapok fiber/regenerated cellulose was prepared at a low-temperature carbonization technique (300 degrees C) directly using kapok and hardwood pulp as raw material, the N-methyl N-oxide monohydrate (NMMO center dot H2O) as a green cellulose solvent, and NH4H2PO4 (ADP) as a carbonization promotor, which is denoted as AX-KRCA(AX: A indicates the ADP used, x is the concentration of ADP solution (g/L)) The regenerated cellulose (RC) was converted from hardwood pulp via NMMO center dot H2O treatment, and further combined with kapok fiber to form a 3D porous structure. By adding ADP, AX-KRCA can be rapidly dehydrated into carbon at 300 degrees C, which not only saves energy consumption but also retains the basic form of kapok fiber and regenerated cellulose, making it have excellent compressibility, elasticity, and fatigue resistance. The ultra-light porous AX-KRCA samples can be an efficient oil/water adsorbent, with an adsorption capacity from 98.0 to 232.1 g g(-1) for various oils, and can maintain 87.3 % adsorption capacity after 20 cycles and 99.6 % separation efficiency after 5 times of filtration.

Abstract:Nanocelluloses (NCs)‐based aerogels have gradually attracted attention due to their excellent performance in oil recovery for mitigating environmental pollution caused by oil spillages. However, hydrophobicity due to polyhydroxy groups and fragile in water, as well as a complicated fabricating process, significantly restrict their practical applications. Herein, we reported a facile route to fabricate superelastic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)@NCs aerogels through a Pickering emulsion strategy. The hierarchical PDMS@NCs aerogels exhibit function‐dependent porous structures and integrated properties of hydrophobicity and lipophilicity, stemming from the synergistic effect of the hydrophobic skin layer and porous matrix. The resulting aerogels are capable of continuous oil/water filtration by adsorption‐extrusion with a flux up to 4300 L·m−2·h−1 and a separation efficiency of 99.9%. Therefore, this provides a new route for the rational design of morphology‐tunable NCs‐based aerogels and affords a reference for its practical application in durable oil/water separation. Directional, super-hydrophobic cellulose nanofiber/polyvinyl alcohol/montmorillonite aerogels as green absorbents for oil/water separation

Abstract:Nowadays, the problem of oil spill and organic solvent pollution has become more and more serious, and developing a green and efficient treatment method has become a research hotspot. Herein, the preparation of porous super-hydrophobic aerogel by directional freezing with cellulose nanofibre (CNF) as the base material, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as the cross-linking agent and montmorillonite (MMT) as the modifier and filler, followed by hydrophobic treatment with chemical vapour deposition is reported. The prepared composite aerogel presented three-dimensional inter-perforation network structure, low density (26.52 mg⋅cm-3 ), high porosity (96.1 %) and good hydrophobicity (water contact angle of 140°). Notably, the composite aerogel has a good adsorption effect on different oils and organic solutions, and its adsorption capacity can reach 40-68 times of its initial weight. After complete adsorption, the aerogel could be easily collected. More importantly, the composite aerogel had high strength, whose compressive stress at 70 % strain reached 0.15 MPa and could bear over 1290 times its weight without deformation after 2 weeks. A new, green, simple and efficient absorbent for the adsorption of oils and organic solvents is provided.

Abstract:While cellulose nanofiber is advantageous for the preparation of porous materials with selective absorption, cellulose-based, hydrophilic-oleophobic aerogels are only prepared through complicated surface-modification. Herein, we report a facile one-pot fabrication of hydrophilic-oleophobic composite aerogels firstly through polycondensation of cellulose nanofiber and three silane coupling agents. The hydrophilic-oleophobic aerogels exhibited interconnected macroporous structures, robust compressive property (without failure at a high strain of 80%), excellent water resistance (without failure even at 100 °C, pH = 1 or pH = 12), the ability to selectively absorb water from oil–water mixtures, and excellent reusability (without significant decrease in hexadecane contact angle and absorption capacity after five absorption–regeneration cycles). The facile one-pot polycondensation and unique hydrophilicity-oleophobicity enabled the aerogels to be practical for removing water from oil–water mixtures.

Abstract:Carbon aerogels are potential materials in oil/water separation. However, the key challenges of the scare/toxic precursor, metals employment, unsatisfied reuse, and high calcination temperature still remain. Here, we fabricated a novel, robust and hydrophobic carbon aerogel (DCCA-350) derived from deep eutectic solvents (DESs, formed by glucose and choline chloride) modified cellulose nanofiber (CNF) under low carbonization temperature of 350℃. The raw materials are renewable and abundant, and the as-prepared carbon aerogel possesses the high volume absorption capability for organic pollutants and oils range from 74%-95%. Due to its excellent thermostability and mechanical properties, methods of combustion and distillation can be applied for the recycling of the DCCA-350 carbon aerogel up to 100 cycles. The effective oils/water separation is mainly attributed to the presence of roughness surface and reduced hydrophilic groups in the carbon aerogel. This is also the first development of carbon aerogel derived from DESs modified CNF, with a promising application on oil/water separation.

Abstract:Green and renewable bio-based composites with antibacterial and oil–water separation properties are of great significance to solve oily wastewater threatened the human health and ecological environment. Herein, naturally degradable nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) is used as substrate to prepare NFC aerogels with antibacterial and oil–water separation functions via grafting by cyanuric chloride (CC) and hexadecyltrimet -hoxysilane in aqueous phase. In particular, the grafting reaction of CC and NFC in aqueous phase overcomes the shortcomings of requiring low temperature environment and complex multi-solvent system. In addition, the aerogels have strong bactericidal activity and excellent antibacterial stability against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus . After repeated washing and long-term UV irradiation, more than 95 % of the antibacterial activity can be recovered after rechlorination. Moreover, the adsorption capacity of dichloromethane on aerogels is still higher than 50 g/g after 30 absorption-extrusion cycles under the premise of sufficient antibacterial substance. Overall, such a simple, green, low-cost method to produce renewable and reusable antibacterial materials for oil–water separation displays great potential in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Elastic and hydrophobic aerogels have received a lot of attention in dealing with the increasing oil pollution due to their recyclable properties. Herein, we present an ultralight and superelastic aerogel with highly oriented polygon structure based on chitin nanofibril (ChNF) and chitosan (CS) by directional freezing. The chemical cross-linking enables good mechanical strength at low aerogel density. After 500 compression-release cycles, the aerogel can retain the deformation recovery rate of 88 % in air, demonstrating the excellent resilience. The bio-based aerogel has high absorption capacity (52-114 g/g) for various oils and organic solvents, and it is able to achieve the absorption retention of 90 % even after 20 absorption-extrusion cycles. Moreover, owing to the good elasticity, the pore size of the aerogel can be adjusted by compression to selectively separate water-in-oil emulsions of different particle sizes with separation efficiencies higher than 99.5 %. The bio-based aerogel with good cycle performance has broad application prospects in the field of oil-water separation.
