Abstract:The specific objective of this study was to assess the relative propensity of young (16 to 20 years old) or older (65 years and older) drivers in Connecticut to be at fault in a traffic crash when they ( a) travel at night, ( b) travel on different classes of roadway (freeway versus state route versus local road), and ( c) travel with different numbers of passengers. For young drivers, the age of the passengers was also considered. The quasi-induced exposure technique was used with police-reported crashes between 1997 and 2001. The results show that young driver risk increases at night, on freeways (and for single-vehicle crashes on local roads), as well as with increased numbers of passengers. For older drivers the risk also increases at night and on freeways (and for single-vehicle crashes on local roads); however, older drivers are less likely to cause crashes when traveling with passengers. These results suggest that the new graduated driver licensing restrictions in place in Connecticut will reduce crashes and that there is the potential to improve young driver safety further by extending these restrictions. Furthermore, similar regulations or education programs aimed at older drivers might improve crash experience for these individuals, especially those older than 75.
Impact of Passengers on Young Driver Safety

Abstract:An analysis of young driver accidents uses the quasi-induced exposure technique to disaggregate accidents by different characteristics or circumstances while making estimates of the relative travel exposure for those different circumstances. Relationships are developed to investigate the effect of passengers on young driver (age 16 to 20) accident propensity. Three passenger groupings are used: solo (no passengers), peer, and adult or child. The database contains 77,312 accidents involving young drivers in Kentucky in 1994, 1995, and 1996. The passenger-group variable was found to have a significant effect on young driver accident propensities. Young drivers have the lowest propensity to cause single- or two-vehicle accidents when traveling with either adults and/or children. They have an increased propensity for causing single-vehicle accidents when traveling with peers. The relative accident involvement ratios for both single- and two-vehicle accidents for young drivers traveling alone were close to 1.0, suggesting that they were at fault approximately the same percentage of the time that they were not at fault. Seven variables were considered for possible interaction with passenger group: driver gender, total occupant gender, time of week, time of day, highway type, vehicle age, and safety-restraint usage.

Abstract:Objective China is experiencing rapid growth both in the number of senior citizens and in automobiles. As the population ages, the number of elderly automobile drivers can be expected to grow. International experience on the safety of elderly drivers may be useful in anticipating the effects of the growth in the number of elderly drivers in China. Methods This study reviewed the literatures and summarized the research on elderly driver motor vehicle crash prevention both from China and some developed countries such as USA.Results Despite elderly drivers driving less as a whole and having higher seat belt compliance, their mileage-adjusted motor vehicle crash (MVC) and fatality rate is higher than any other age group. Visual and cognitive impairment among elderly drivers raises the risk of a MVC, and these conditions cause unique collision patterns. Physical fragility and co-morbidities confer a poorer outcome post MVC compared to younger drivers with equivalent injury severity. Although few elderly drivers in China, data has shown higher rate of traffic injury among elderly, higher fatality of elderly pedestrian, and higher rate of elderly victims in rural area. Conclusion International experience on the safety of elderly drivers such as better road safety design, highly visible and seatbelt law enforcement, public education in regards to seatbelt use, and adjustment for license renewal period may be helpful to the traffic safety designers and policy makers in China. These issues may also have important implications for injury prevention researchers in identifying elderly driver MVC risk factors, and engineers optimizing the driving environment and vehicle.
Study on older drivers' car following behavior and influencing factors

Abstract:In order to improve the safety of road traffic under the aging background, based on a driving simulator, the car following behavior of older drivers and the influencing factors were investigated.Headway, speed and response time were selected as the indexes of car following behavior.Difference in the car following behavior between older and younger drivers was analyzed, and then Pearson correlation coefficient method was used to analyze the relationships among the car following behavior, drivers' age,work load and drivers' preference.The results show that compared with younger drivers, older drivers' time to responding to the emergency brake is longer, and they always adopt the larger headway and are more variable in their speed, and that the car following behavior is significautly related to drivers' age, work load and drivers' preference.

Abstract:This paper presents a review on relevant studies and reports related to older drivers' behavior and stress. Questionnaires, simulators, and on-road/in-vehicle systems are used to collect driving data in most studies. In addition, research either directly compares older drivers and the other drivers or considers participants according to various age groups. Nevertheless, the definition of 'older driver' varies not only across studies but also across different government reports. Although questionnaire surveys are widely used to affordably obtain massive data in a short time, they lack objectivity. In contrast, biomedical information can increase the reliability of a driving stress assessment when collected in environments such as driving simulators and on-road experiments. Various studies determined that driving behavior and stress remain stable regardless of age, whereas others reported degradation of driving abilities and increased driving stress among older drivers. Instead of age, many researchers recommended considering other influencing factors, such as gender, living area, and driving experience. To mitigate bias in findings, this literature review suggests a hybrid method by applying surveys and collecting on-road/in-vehicle data.

Abstract:A questionnaire survey of drivers (n = 903) was conducted covering musculoskeletal symptoms, the vehicle seat, access to specific vehicle features, ingress/egress, driving performance and driving behaviours. Significantly, more discomfort was reported by older drivers (aged 65+) in the hips/thighs/buttocks and knees. Older drivers reported more difficulty parallel parking (p ≤ 0.01), driving on a foggy day (p ≤ 0.01), and turning their head and body to reverse (p ≤ 0.001). They also reported that their reactions were slower than they used to be (p ≤ 0.01). Dissatisfaction was found by all drivers with adjusting the headrest (height and distance), seat belt height and opening/closing the boot. There is a growing population of older people globally, and the number of older drivers is showing a parallel increase. Clearly, efforts are needed to ensure car design of the future is more inclusive of older drivers. Practitioner Summary: This paper describes a questionnaire survey of drivers on their driving experience - the vehicle seat, access to specific vehicle features, ingress/egress, driving performance and driving behaviours. Comparisons are made by age and gender. Issues with driving and vehicle design particularly for older drivers in the UK are identified.

Abstract:Considerable evidence suggests that the decline in physiological abilities prevalent in older drivers leads to a reduction in the visual and psychomotor functions required for safe driving. The purpose of this study is to further investigate the differences in driving behavior between older and younger drivers and to describe the change process of driving behavior. In this study, 19 younger and older drivers each were recruited for a driving simulation experiment that included five scenarios. Driving operation data, eye movement data, and physiological data of drivers in five conflict scenarios were collected. The differences in driving behaviors between the two groups were also compared and analyzed, on which the thresholds of different driving behavior nodes were determined and driving behavior graphs were established. The results show that the eye movement nodes of older drivers appear later in five scenarios, the operational nodes of older people appear later in two steering scenarios, and are closer to those of younger drivers in three straight ahead scenarios, indicating that older drivers were later in observing and collecting traffic information, and later in applying brakes and steering to avoid conflicts when steering. The study provides a reference for the analysis of driving behavior and driving safety of older people.
Passive Fatigue of Drivers? Physiological and Behavioral Changes of On-Road Driving

Abstract:Driver fatigue is a heated topic in the study of engineering psychology and human factors. Various kinds of exogenous factors can cause different types of fatigue; with high workload causing active fatigue, and low workload causing passive fatigue. In particular, passive fatigue is considered more hazardous, and mind wandering often arises along with passive fatigue. With the impact of the different types of fatigue on drivers varies physiologically and behaviorally, the current study recruited thirty-six participants to study the physiological and behavioral influence of passive fatigue on drivers. Drivers were asked to drive on a monotonous highway continuously for ninety minutes at a constant speed of 80km/h. Subjective sleepiness, eye tracking indicators, and driving dynamics were recorded throughout the experiment using the Stanford Sleepiness Scale, Smart Eye Pro, and CAN Bus system. The results showed that as time went on, drivers became sleepier, and their pupil diameter increased accordingly. The gaze dispersion of drivers grew larger, and this tendency was also observed in the studies on mind wandering. Moreover, drivers also gradually lost control of the vehicle speed, in which faster speed and lower speed compliance were observed. In addition, a compensatory process was found as passive fatigue increased. Drivers tended to lower their standard to maintain lateral position, but recovered their lateral control when they lost control of the car speed. The current study emphasizes the importance to investigate active and passive fatigue of drivers independently, and the observed increase of gaze dispersion provides researchers and manufacturers a new option in designing driver monitoring systems.
A preliminary study on the barriers and facilitators to improving the health, safety, and well-being of aging heavy vehicle drivers

Abstract:Introduction: Managers from road freight transportation organizations were interviewed on barriers and facilitators to implementation of occupational health, safety, and well-being interventions for aging heavy vehicle drivers. As aging drivers are more likely to be seriously injured or die in a work-related incident than younger drivers, it is important to recognize strengths and weaknesses throughout the system to identify intervention that addresses their specific needs. Method: A Systems Theoretic Accident Model and Processes (STAMP) control structure was constructed to chart the controllers, controls, and feedback channels in the system to identify gaps in health, safety, and well-being intervention in the system. The STAMP control structure also charted the barriers and facilitators within levels across the system. Eleven managers were recruited into the study representing a range of road freight transportation organizations throughout Australia. Results: Interview data revealed that barriers and facilitators existed at most levels of the system. Facilitators included advice from external agencies, support from upper management, modern technology, and regular social communication with drivers. Barriers were a lack of guidance on aging issues, operational conflicts with health and safety objectives, and the drivers' fear of disclosing health information associated with their driving role. In regards to formalized intervention in place to support aging heavy vehicle drivers, the system is reliant on fitness to drive medical assessments based on age and jurisdiction. Conclusions: As there was generally a lack of senior direction cited from the upper levels of the system on aging issues, there was much variation across the study on how aging risks are managed in the workplace for heavy vehicle drivers. Practical applications: This study recommends that managers across the road freight transportation industry receive formalized aging-awareness health and safety training in how to manage work-related driving hazards for aging heavy vehicle drivers.
Older driver vehicle preferences and perceptions of safety: A survey

Abstract:Introduction: Older adults drive older vehicles despite the safety benefits of newer, more crashworthy vehicles. We aimed to build upon previous research and assess vehicle preferences, buying and ownership patterns, and perceptions of safety among older drivers compared with middle-aged drivers. Methods: Mixed-mode telephone and online panel surveys were conducted with a nationally representative sample of drivers ages 35-54 and 70 and older. Participants were interviewed about their primary vehicle and the characteristics they deemed important at purchase, along with general attitudes surrounding vehicle safety. Results: Fifty-eight percent of drivers ages 70-79 and 63% of drivers 80 and older reported keeping a vehicle on average for 7 years or more before replacing it, compared with 32% of drivers 35-54. At purchase, older drivers were less likely than middle-aged drivers to have insisted upon safety technologies and were less likely to consider safety ratings; 10% of drivers 80 and older and 9% of those 70-79 indicated ratings were not at all important, compared with 4% of those ages 35-54. Among drivers 70 and older, driving patterns and income were strongly associated with vehicle age and type of vehicle driven. Conclusions: Older drivers place lower importance on vehicle safety and are less likely to seek safety features at purchase than middle-aged drivers. Compounding this, drivers 70 and older who do not drive frequently or who associate low mileage with vehicle safety are less likely to replace their older, low-mileage vehicles. Practical application: Increasing older drivers' understanding of the importance of advancements in vehicle safety may result in greater ownership of safer vehicles and fewer road injuries.

Abstract:The presence of peer passengers increases the risk of fatal crashes among teenage drivers. Distraction and social influence are the two main factors associated with this increased risk. Teen drivers' perceptions of their peer passengers with regard to distraction and social influence could help inform the understanding of the conditions under which peer passengers increase crash risk or promote safer driving. The purpose of this study was to examine such perceptions. A convenience sample of male and female drivers participated in a semistructured interview process that included questions about their perceptions of the effects of peer passengers on driving. The analysis of the interviews was guided by a grounded theory approach. Teenage drivers were found to be aware of the risk that peer passengers posed. Some described having passengers in the vehicle as distracting and recognized that the level of distraction increased with the number of passengers. Drivers who felt responsible for the safety of their peer passengers described strategies that they used to control the in-vehicle environment. Drivers described driving with passengers as a performance and articulated direct and indirect sources of pressure, gender norms, and the unspoken expectations of their passengers as influences on their driving behavior. The influence of passengers is situation specific and dependent on who the passengers are; passenger influence may be either protective or harmful, according to the circumstances. Some passengers exert direct influence, but often their influence appears more indirect and subtle.

[Visual abilities of older drivers--review of driving simulator studies]

Abstract:In the member countries of the year Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), one in four people will reach the age of 65 or more by 2030 and their population aged over 80 will triple by 2050. Changes that occur in the demographic structure of developed countries will affect traffic area. Most of the on-road existing solutions is inadequate for older people with diminished cognitive and motor abilities. In this group, difficulties in driving performance are associated with reduced cognitive efficiency, vision and hearing loss, and general psychomotor slowing. The presented review focuses on the studies of a useful field of view, an indicator considered to be a valid predictor of road accidents, divided attention, susceptibility to distraction and visual search strategies. The major questions of these studies were: which vision parameters determine safe driving, what degree of their deterioration causes significant risk and whether there are opportunities for their rehabilitation. The results indicate that older drivers do exhibit vision and attention deficits, but their engagement in a wide range of compensatory behaviors and effective visual search strategies compensate for these deficits. This shows that older drivers cannot be clearly classified as a group of particular risk for causing road traffic accidents. We should not be alarmed by a growing group of active senior drivers. We should rather use the advantages of available methods, including driving simulators, to predict how the traffic environment will look like in the close future and how to make it friendly and safe for everyone.
Use, perceptions, and benefits of automotive technologies among aging drivers

Abstract:Advanced in-vehicle technologies have been proposed as a potential way to keep older adults driving for as long as they can safely do so, by taking into account the common declines in functional abilities experienced by older adults. The purpose of this report was to synthesize the knowledge about older drivers and advanced in-vehicle technologies, focusing on three areas: use (how older drivers use these technologies), perception (what they think about the technologies), and outcomes (the safety and/or comfort benefits of the technologies). Twelve technologies were selected for review and grouped into three categories: crash avoidance systems (lane departure warning, curve speed warning, forward collision warning, blind spot warning, parking assistance); in-vehicle information systems (navigation assistance, intelligent speed adaptation); and other systems (adaptive cruise control, automatic crash notification, night vision enhancement, adaptive headlight, voice activated control). A comprehensive and systematic search was conducted for each technology to collect related publications. 271 articles were included into the final review. Research findings for each of the 12 technologies are synthesized in relation to how older adults use and think about the technologies as well as potential benefits. These results are presented separately for each technology. Can advanced in-vehicle technologies help extend the period over which an older adult can drive safely? This report answers this question with an optimistic "yes." Some of the technologies reviewed in this report have been shown to help older drivers avoid crashes, improve the ease and comfort of driving, and travel to places and at times that they might normally avoid.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Driving represents a multifaceted cognitive endeavor, demanding heightened vigilance and swift responses. Considering the high statistics of driving accidents and heavy loads, as well as the effect of the driver’s age on the occurrence of accidents, it is important to investigate these factors to reduce accidents. OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the impact of mental workload on the performance of young and older drivers in a dynamic driving scenario to compare cognitive performance, workload perception, and driving outcomes between the two age groups. METHODS: Cognitive tests including the Stroop test, Continuous Performance test, and Focused Attention test were conducted, alongside the use of the DALI questionnaire to measure workload levels. Participants encompassed twenty male drivers, divided into two age groups: 20 to 35 years and 55 to 70 years, with varying years of driving experience. The study entailed a dynamic driving scenario involving a designated route in Tehran, Iran. RESULTS: Results exhibited differences in workload scores between the age groups, particularly in dimensions such as visual demand, auditory demand, attention, and interference. Older drivers demonstrated heightened cognitive and physical demands during driving, implying a greater need for attention and cognitive effort. CONCLUSION: The findings of this study indicated that navigating through congested roads and dense urban traffic significantly elevates the mental workload for drivers, consequently impacting their cognitive functioning. Given the critical need for attention in driving, this heightened workload can manifest as increased fatigue, increasing stress levels, and diminished concentration, all of which substantially raise the risk of vehicular accidents. Furthermore, the study highlighted a particular concern for older drivers, whose diminished cognitive capacities further raise their vulnerability to accidents under such demanding driving conditions.

Abstract:This article discusses what is currently known about three important topics related to older driver safety and mobility: screening and evaluation, education and training interventions, and in-vehicle technology. Progress is being made to improve the safe mobility of older adults in these key areas; however, significant research gaps remain. This article advances the state of knowledge by identifying these gaps, and proposing further research topics will improve the lives of older adults. In addition, we discuss several themes that emerged from the review, including the need for multidisciplinary, community-wide solutions; large-scale, longitudinal studies; improved education/training for both older adults themselves and the variety of stakeholders involved in older adult transportation; and programs and interventions that are flexible and responsive to individual needs and differences.

Examining Senior Drivers' Attitudes Toward Advanced Driver Assistance Systems After Naturalistic Exposure

Abstract:Background and objectives: The increasing number of senior drivers may introduce new road risks due to age-related declines in physical and cognitive abilities. Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) have been proposed as solutions to minimize age-related declines, thereby increasing both senior safety and mobility. This study examined factors that influence seniors' attitudes toward adopting ADAS after significant exposure to the technology in naturalistic settings. Research design and methods: This study recruited 18 senior drivers aged 70-79 to drive vehicles equipped with ADAS for 6 weeks in their own environments. Afterward, each participant was enrolled in 1 of the 3 focus group sessions to discuss their changes in attitude toward ADAS based on their driving experiences. We applied structural topic modeling (STM) on the focus group transcripts to reveal key topics deemed important to seniors. Results: STM revealed 5 topics of importance for seniors. In order of prevalence, these were (i) safety, (ii) confidence concerning ADAS, (iii) ADAS functionality, (iv) user interface/usability, and (v) non-ADAS-related features. Based on topics and associated keywords, seniors perceived safety improvement with ADAS but expressed concerns about its limitations in coping with adverse driving conditions. Experience and training were suggested for improving seniors' confidence in ADAS. Blind spot alert and adaptive cruise control received the most discussion regarding perceived safety and comfort. Discussion and implications: This study indicated that promoting road safety for senior drivers through ADAS is feasible. Acceptance and appropriate use of ADAS may be supported through intuitive and senior-friendly user interfaces, in-depth training programs, and owner's manuals specifically designed and tested for senior drivers.
Takeover performance of older drivers in automated driving: A review

Abstract:IntroductionThe introduction of automated vehicles to the road environment brings new challenges for older drivers. Level 3 of conditional automation requires drivers to take over control of their vehicle whenever the automated system reaches its limits. Even though autonomous vehicles may be of great benefit to older drivers in terms of safely maintaining their mobility, a better understanding of their takeover performance remains crucial. The objective of this review of the literature is to shed more light on the effects that aging has on takeover performance during automated driving.MethodsThree database searches were conducted: PsychINFO, Web Of Sciences, and TRID. Studies from the last decade which included groups of older drivers were reviewed.ResultsAfter checking through abstracts and texts of articles, 9 articles, 4 proceedings papers, and 1 technical report were included in this review. All studies included a driving simulator that refers to level 3 of automation (which requires supervision by the driver). Five out of fourteen studies showed that older adults had poorer takeover performance (in terms of takeover time and takeover quality) than younger adults. However, several factors, such as the type of non-driving related task (NDRT), were seen to influence takeover performance in older adults. Speed, type and duration of notification interval, distribution and duration of driving modes, and number of takeovers were all also factors of influence.ConclusionThis review synthesizes the results of 14 articles which investigate the effects of age-related changes on takeover performance. Various external factors as NDRTs, speed, type and duration of notification to take over, duration of the automated phase, distribution of the automated/manual phases may affect takeover performance in older adults. Even if the majority of articles showed that older adults are globally slower at taking over a vehicle than younger adults, findings concerning take over quality yield divergent results. It's probably due to age related cognitive changes, particularly in executive functions or to a great heterogeneity in this population. This literature review highlights the need to develop new research on the impact of aging on takeover performance.

How do older drivers perceive visual information under increasing cognitive load? Significance of personality on-road safety

Abstract:The ability to properly receive information and respond to stimuli is a prerequisite for road safety. The aim of this study was to determine the changes in oculomotor activity under conditions of increasing cognitive load depending on personality traits in older drivers (65 years and above). We assessed 44 male active drivers (M = 69, SD = 8.1) in a road traffic simulator in the dual-task paradigm: n-back reaction test (central task) and memory test (peripheral task). During the test in the simulator, oculomotor activity was recorded. Drivers' personality traits were determined using the EPQ-R questionnaire. With the increase of cognitive load in drivers with high levels of neuroticism and extraversion, the time of saccades and fixation significantly increased. The decrease in the effectiveness of visual attention shifting in older drivers intensified as the difficulty of performing tasks increased and manifested itself in longer saccade and fixation times. A higher level of neuroticism and the resulting stress and emotional tension can translate into a greater tendency to make mistakes in older drivers.

Abstract:Journal of Applied Gerontology, Ahead of Print. Quality of life outcomes are associated with the transition to non-driving and depend on effective coping. We examined the relationship between internal factors associated with effective coping and longitudinal changes in travel behavior among drivers aged ≥70 using data from a randomized controlled trial evaluating a driving decision aid. We measured attitudes using the Assessment of Readiness for Mobility Transition (ARMT) and personality using the Ten-Item Personality Inventory (TIPI). We analyzed associations between attitudes and personality with drivers' change in a) alternative transportation use and b) driving behavior over time. Older drivers with high versus low attitudinal readiness for mobility transition were more likely to use alternative transportation over time (adjusted odds ratio = 6.37; 95% confidence interval: 1.45–28.1). We found no association between personality characteristics and alternative transportation use or driving behavior over time. Attitudinal readiness may be a key predictor of effective coping during the transition to non-driving.

Abstract:Driving cessation for some older adults can exacerbate physical, cognitive, and mental health challenges due to loss of independence and social isolation. Fully autonomous vehicles may offer an alternative transport solution, increasing social contact and encouraging independence. However, there are gaps in understanding the impact of older adults' passive role on safe human-vehicle interaction, and on their well-being. 37 older adults (mean age ± SD = 68.35 ± 8.49 years) participated in an experiment where they experienced fully autonomous journeys consisting of a distinct stop (an unexpected event versus an expected event). The autonomous behavior of the vehicle was achieved using the Wizard of Oz approach. Subjective ratings of trust and reliability, and driver state monitoring including visual attention strategies (fixation duration and count) and physiological arousal (skin conductance and heart rate), were captured during the journeys. Results revealed that subjective trust and reliability ratings were high after journeys for both types of events. During an unexpected stop, overt visual attention was allocated toward the event, whereas during an expected stop, visual attention was directed toward the human-machine interface (HMI) and distributed across the central and peripheral driving environment. Elevated skin conductance level reflecting increased arousal persisted only after the unexpected event. These results suggest that safety-critical events occurring during passive fully automated driving may narrow visual attention and elevate arousal mechanisms. To improve in-vehicle user experience for older adults, a driver state monitoring system could examine such psychophysiological indices to evaluate functional state and well-being. This information could then be used to make informed decisions on vehicle behavior and offer reassurance during elevated arousal during unexpected events.
