Abstract:Research has revealed that conditionally automated vehicles can adversely affect situation awareness, a crucial factor in ensuring a safe transition of driving control during takeover, particularly for older adults. The objective of this study was to design and test more complex multimodal interfaces capable of delivering critical real-time road information, including obstacle locations, statuses, and lane availability, to effectively assist drivers who may experience age-related cognitive and physical declines, when navigating complex automated systems. This study investigated the effects of displays (single tactile, and visual and tactile combined), information presentation type (instructional, informative, baseline), and age (older and younger adults) on participants’ takeover performance (i.e., information processing time and situation awareness). In general, the utilization of informative information resulted in an enhancement of drivers’ situation awareness and information processing time, compared to when using the instructional information type. Moreover, multimodal displays were associated with faster processing speeds compared to unimodal displays. However, no significant main effect of the display was observed on the level of situation awareness. Likewise, there was no discernible age-related disparity in situation awareness levels. Yet, younger adults exhibited shorter information processing times than older adults. This research aims to improve situation awareness and processing time to help drivers, especially older adults, prevent time-critical accidents during the takeover process in automated driving. The findings from this study may inform the design of next-generation in-vehicle human–machine interfaces.

Driving Automation for Older Adults with Preclinical Alzheimer's Disease

Abstract:Introduction: Older adults with preclinical Alzheimer's disease (AD) show changes in on-road driving performance. The impact of preclinical AD on using automated vehicle (AV) technology is unknown. The aim was to evaluate safety and cognitive workload while operating AV technology in drivers with preclinical AD. Introduction: This cross-sectional study included 40 participants: 19 older adults (age 74.16 ± 4.78; MOCA scores 26.42 ± 2.52) with preclinical AD, evidenced by elevated cortical beta-amyloid; and 21 controls (age 73.81 ± 5.62; MOCA scores 28.24 ± 1.67). All participants completed two scenarios in a driving simulator. Scenario 1 included conditional automation with an emergency event that required a manual take-over maneuver. Scenario 2 was identical but with a cognitive distractor task. Emergency response time was the main safety outcome measure. Cognitive workload was calculated using moment-to-moment changes in pupillary size and converted into an Index of Cognitive Activity (ICA). Mann-Whitney U and independent t tests were used to compare group differences. Results: Emergency response times were similar between drivers with preclinical AD and controls in scenario 1 (20.85 s ± 1.08 vs. 20.52 s ± 3.18; p = 0.83) and scenario 2 (14.83 s ± 7.37 vs. 13.45 s ± 10.43; p = 0.92). Likewise, no differences were found in ICA between drivers with preclinical AD and controls in scenario 1 (0.34 ± 0.08 vs. 0.33 ± 0.17; p = 0.74) or scenario 2 (0.30 ± 0.07 vs. 0.29 ± 0.17; p = 0.93). Conclusions: Older drivers with preclinical AD may safely operate AV technology, without increased response times or cognitive workload. Future on-road studies with AV technology should confirm these preliminary results in drivers with preclinical AD.

Abstract:Maintaining an appropriate level of trust is critical for driving safety in autonomous vehicles. While enhancing the driver's situation awareness (SA) of system information in autonomous driving is known to significantly promote trust calibration, it remains unclear whether enhancing the driver's SA of the external context during driving contributes to this calibration. This study addresses this gap by improving SA of the external context during Level 3 (L3) driving automation across various driving environments. Driving contexts were manipulated using distinct road conditions containing low, medium, or high contextual risks. To enhance driver's SA of the driving context, we redesigned the in-vehicle central control panel to display real-time perceptual and predictive information about the external driving context. We hypothesized that SA of driving contexts would facilitate trust calibration rather than merely enhancing trust, allowing trust to adjust to appropriate levels under different driving conditions. Experiment 1 examined the impact of perceptual information about the road, traffic infrastructure, and surrounding vehicles on drivers' trust. We found that driver's trust decreased with increased contextual risk only when the reconfigured panel was used, while the number of accidents was not affected. Experiment 2 investigated the effect of predictive information about the external context on drivers' trust by marking safe and dangerous zones around driver's vehicle with green and red areas, respectively. We revealed that the predictive information calibrated the trust according to road conditions and increased overall trust levels, while the number of accidents was not affected. Together, these findings suggest that enhancing perception and prediction of external contexts helps drivers align their trust with contextual risk levels in L3 driving automation without compromising driving safety.

Abstract:With the growing technological advances in autonomous driving, the transport industry and research community seek to determine the impact that autonomous vehicles (AV) will have on consumers, as well as identify the different factors that will influence their use. Most of the research performed so far relies on laboratory-controlled conditions using driving simulators, as they offer a safe environment for testing advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS). In this study we analyze the behavior of drivers that are placed in control of an automated vehicle in a real life driving environment. The vehicle is equipped with advanced autonomy, making driver control of the vehicle unnecessary in many scenarios, although a driver take over is possible and sometimes required. In doing so, we aim to determine the impact of such a system on the driver and their driving performance. To this end road users' behavior from naturalistic driving data is analyzed focusing on awareness and diagnosis of the road situation. Results showed that the road features determined the level of visual attention and trust in the automation. They also showed that the activities performed during the automation affected the reaction time to take over the control of the vehicle.

ObjectiveThis study aims to understand drivers' visual attention before and after take-over requests during automated driving (AD), when the vehicle is fully responsible for the driving task on public roads.BackgroundExisting research on transitions of control from AD to manual driving has mainly focused on take-over times. Despite its relevance for vehicle safety, drivers' visual attention has received little consideration.MethodThirty participants took part in a Wizard of Oz study on public roads. Drivers' visual attention was analyzed before and after four take-over requests. Visual attention during manual driving was also recorded to serve as a baseline for comparison.ResultsDuring AD, the participants showed reduced visual attention to the forward road and increased duration of single off-road glances compared to manual driving. In response to take-over requests, the participants looked away from the forward road toward the instrument cluster. Levels of visual attention towards the forward road did not return to the levels observed during manual driving until after 15 s had passed.ConclusionDuring AD, drivers may look toward non-driving related task items (e.g., mobile phone) instead of forward. Further, when a transition of control is required, drivers may take over control before they are aware of the driving environment or potential threat(s). Thus, it cannot be assumed that drivers are ready to respond to events shortly after the take-over request.ApplicationIt is important to consider the effect of the design of take-over requests on drivers' visual attention alongside take-over times.

Abstract:Semi-autonomous vehicles (AVs) enable drivers to engage in non-driving tasks but require them to be ready to take control during critical situations. This “out-of-the-loop” problem demands a quick transition to active information processing, raising safety concerns and anxiety. Multimodal signals in AVs aim to deliver take-over requests and facilitate driver–vehicle cooperation. However, the effectiveness of auditory, visual, or combined signals in improving situational awareness and reaction time for safe maneuvering remains unclear. This study investigates how signal modalities affect drivers’ behavior using virtual reality (VR). We measured drivers’ reaction times from signal onset to take-over response and gaze dwell time for situational awareness across twelve critical events. Furthermore, we assessed self-reported anxiety and trust levels using the Autonomous Vehicle Acceptance Model questionnaire. The results showed that visual signals significantly reduced reaction times, whereas auditory signals did not. Additionally, any warning signal, together with seeing driving hazards, increased successful maneuvering. The analysis of gaze dwell time on driving hazards revealed that audio and visual signals improved situational awareness. Lastly, warning signals reduced anxiety and increased trust. These results highlight the distinct effectiveness of signal modalities in improving driver reaction times, situational awareness, and perceived safety, mitigating the “out-of-the-loop” problem and fostering human–vehicle cooperation.

Abstract:Autonomous vehicles (AVs) may benefit the health and safety of drivers across the driving lifespan, but perceptions of drivers are not known. Lived experiences of drivers exposed to AVs in combination with surveys, can more accurately reveal their perceptions. We quantified facilitators and barriers from data collected in older (N = 104) and younger drivers (N = 106). Perceptions were assessed via Autonomous Vehicle User Perception Survey (AVUPS) subscales (i.e., intention to use , barriers , well-being , and acceptance ) pertaining to group exposure (simulator first [SF] or autonomous shuttle first [ASF]). We quantified the effects of group, time, and group × time interaction. Multiple linear regressions identified predictors (e.g., optimism , ease of use , life space , driving exposure , and driving difficulty, age, gender, race) of the AVUPS subscales. The regression analyses indicated that optimism and ease of use positively predicted intention to use , barriers , well-being , and the total acceptance score. Driving difficulty significantly predicted barriers , whereas miles driven negatively predicted well-being. The regression results indicated that predictors of user acceptance of AV technology included age, race, optimism , ease of use, with 33.6% of the variance in acceptance explained. The findings reveal foundational information about driver acceptance , intention to use , barriers , and well-being related to AVs. New knowledge pertains to how demographics , optimism , ease of use , life space , driving exposure , and driving difficulty inform AV acceptance. We provided strategies to inform city planners and other stakeholders on improving upon deployment practices of AVs.

Abstract:As vehicular automation handles more aspects of the driving task, human drivers are taxed with increasing demands to monitor and handle rare automation failures. Staying vigilant imposes a high-cognitive workload and so is hypothesized to pose varying difficulties across the driving population, leading to differences in individual susceptibility to vigilance decrement. To investigate this, the present study proposes the use of an objective neurometric of mental workload to characterize drivers’ severity of vigilance decrement during assisted driving with adaptive cruise control. Drivers performed a car-following task for approximately 1.5 h and performed emergency braking whenever the leading car brakes suddenly. The neurometric, frontal theta / parietal alpha ratio—measured from an alert-state driving period using a wearable electroencephalography headset—was found to be associated with the magnitude of drivers’ behavioral changes (cumulative slowing and erraticity of their braking reaction times) over the course of the assisted driving tour. This is the first study to explore the use of an alert-state objective measure in profiling individuals’ general susceptibility to vigilance decrements in assisted driving, which is highly relevant in the context of identifying higher risk drivers and designing driver-vehicle interaction systems to enhance automation use safety.

Abstract:Anti-Yo antibody is present in some patients with paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration (PCD), but there is no evidence that it causes Purkinje cell loss. We found HLA A24 in all of the patients. The roles of HLA class I molecules in neuronal loss need to be examined. The peptide-binding groove of HLA class I molecules fits the peptides of 8-10 amino acids. Allele specificity has been shown in the interaction between peptide and HLA molecules. We examined HLA-class I restricted cytotoxic T cell (CTL) activity against autologous fibroblasts using a peptide of the Yo protein with the HLA A24-specific allele. The CTL activity in a patient showed 13.8% at effector/target ratio of 65:1. This is the first evidence of the presence of CTL reacting with a peptide of Yo protein in the peripheral venous blood from a patient with PCD.
Get Ready for Take-Overs: Using Head-Up Display for Drivers to Engage in Non-Driving-Related Tasks in Automated Vehicles

Abstract:Objective: The study aims to investigate the potential of using HUD (head-up display) as an approach for drivers to engage in non-driving-related tasks (NDRTs) during automated driving, and examine the impacts on driver state and take-over performance in comparison to the traditional mobile phone. Background: Advances in automated vehicle technology have the potential to relieve drivers from driving tasks so that they can engage in NDRTs freely. However, drivers will still need to take-over control under certain circumstances. Method: A driving simulation experiment was conducted using an Advanced Driving Simulator and real-world driving videos. Forty-six participants completed three drives in three display conditions, respectively (HUD, mobile phone and baseline without NDRT). The HUD was integrated with the vehicle in displaying NDRTs while the mobile phone was not. Drivers' visual (e.g. gaze, blink) and physiological (e.g. ECG, EDA) data were collected to measure driver state. Two take-over reaction times (hand and foot) were used to measure take-over performance. Results: The HUD significantly shortened the take-over reaction times compared to the mobile phone condition. Compared to the baseline condition, drivers in the HUD condition also experienced lower cognitive workload and physiological arousal. Drivers' take-over reaction times were significantly correlated with their visual and electrodermal activities during automated driving prior to the take-over request. Conclusion: HUDs can improve driver performance and lower workload when used as an NDRT interface. Application: The study sheds light on a promising approach for drivers to engage in NDRTs in future AVs.
Takeover performance of older drivers in automated driving: A review

Abstract:IntroductionThe introduction of automated vehicles to the road environment brings new challenges for older drivers. Level 3 of conditional automation requires drivers to take over control of their vehicle whenever the automated system reaches its limits. Even though autonomous vehicles may be of great benefit to older drivers in terms of safely maintaining their mobility, a better understanding of their takeover performance remains crucial. The objective of this review of the literature is to shed more light on the effects that aging has on takeover performance during automated driving.MethodsThree database searches were conducted: PsychINFO, Web Of Sciences, and TRID. Studies from the last decade which included groups of older drivers were reviewed.ResultsAfter checking through abstracts and texts of articles, 9 articles, 4 proceedings papers, and 1 technical report were included in this review. All studies included a driving simulator that refers to level 3 of automation (which requires supervision by the driver). Five out of fourteen studies showed that older adults had poorer takeover performance (in terms of takeover time and takeover quality) than younger adults. However, several factors, such as the type of non-driving related task (NDRT), were seen to influence takeover performance in older adults. Speed, type and duration of notification interval, distribution and duration of driving modes, and number of takeovers were all also factors of influence.ConclusionThis review synthesizes the results of 14 articles which investigate the effects of age-related changes on takeover performance. Various external factors as NDRTs, speed, type and duration of notification to take over, duration of the automated phase, distribution of the automated/manual phases may affect takeover performance in older adults. Even if the majority of articles showed that older adults are globally slower at taking over a vehicle than younger adults, findings concerning take over quality yield divergent results. It's probably due to age related cognitive changes, particularly in executive functions or to a great heterogeneity in this population. This literature review highlights the need to develop new research on the impact of aging on takeover performance.

Abstract:Abstract The development of highly automated vehicles can meet elderly drivers’ mobility needs; however, worse driving performance after a takeover request (TOR) is frequently found, especially regarding non-driving related tasks (NDRTs). This study aims to detect the correlation between takeover performance and underlying cognitive factors comprising a set of higher order cognitive processes including executive functions. Thirty-five young and 35 elderly participants were tested by computerized cognitive tasks and simulated driving tasks to evaluate their executive functions and takeover performance. Performance of n-back tasks, Simon tasks, and task switching were used to evaluate updating, inhibition, and shifting components of executive functions by principal component analysis. The performance of lane changing after TOR was measured using the standard deviation of the steering wheel angle and minimum time-to-collision (TTC). Differences between age groups and NDRT engagement were assessed by two-way mixed analysis of variance. Older participants had significantly lower executive function ability and were less stable and more conservative when engaged in NDRT. Furthermore, a significant correlation between executive function and lateral driving stability was found. These findings highlight the interaction between age-related differences in executive functions and takeover performance; thus, provide implications for designing driver screening tests or human–machine interfaces.

Abstract:Age-related macular degeneration is a leading cause of blindness worldwide and is one of many limitations to independent driving among old adults. Highly autonomous vehicles present a prospective solution for those who are no longer capable of driving due to low vision. However, accessibility issues must be addressed to create a safe and pleasant experience for this group of users so that it allows them to maintain an appropriate level of situational awareness and a sense of control during driving. In this study, we made use of a human-centered design process consisting of five stages - empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test. We designed a prototype to aid old adults with age-related macular degeneration to travel with a necessary level of situational awareness and remain in control while riding in a highly or fully autonomous vehicle. The final design prototype includes a voice-activated navigation system with three levels of details to bolster situational awareness, a 360 degree in-vehicle camera to detect both the passenger and objects around the vehicle, a retractable microphone for the passenger to be easily registered in the vehicle while speaking, and a physical button on the console-side of the right and left front seats to manually activate the navigation system.

Abstract:Highly automated driving will likely result in drivers being out-of-the-loop during specific scenarios and engaging in a wide range of non-driving related tasks. Manifesting in lower levels of risk perception to emerging events, and thus affect drivers’ availability to take-over manual control in safety-critical scenarios. In this empirical research, we measured drivers’ (N = 20) risk perception with cardiac and skin conductance indicators through a series of high-fidelity, simulated highly automated driving scenarios. By manipulating the presence of surrounding traffic and changing driving conditions as long-term risk modulators, and including a driving hazard event as a short-term risk modulator, we hypothesised that an increase in risk perception would induce greater physiological arousal. Our results demonstrate that heart rate variability features are superior at capturing arousal variations from these long-term, low to moderate risk scenarios. In contrast, skin conductance responses are more sensitive to rapidly evolving situations associated with moderate to high risk. Based on this research, future driver state monitoring systems should adopt multiple physiological measures to capture changes in the long and short term, modulation of risk perception. This will enable enhanced perception of driver readiness and improved availability to safely deal with take-over events when requested by an automated vehicle.

Abstract:The integration of self-driving vehicles may expose individuals with health concerns to undue amounts of stress. Psychophysiological indicators of stress were used to determine changes in tonic and phasic stress levels brought about by a high-fidelity autonomous vehicle simulation. Twenty-eight participants completed one manual driving task and two automated driving tasks. Participants reported their subjective level of trust in the automated systems using the Automation Trust Survey. Psychophysiological stress was indexed using skin conductance and trapezius muscle tension. Results indicate that users show more signs of physiological stress when the vehicle drives autonomously than when the users is in control. Results also indicate that users show an additional increase in stress when the user reports low trust in the autonomous vehicle. These findings suggest that health-care professionals and manufactures should be aware of additional stress associated with self-driving technology.

Abstract:Drivers of partially automated vehicles (PAVs) are relieved from parts of the driving tasks allocated to the automated driver. Ironically, these drivers are obligated to continuously monitor the driving task at all times and keep their attention on the roadway. This reduction in the driving task's demands and cognitive workload may encourage drivers to engage with non-driving related tasks (NDRT), which may impair drivers' awareness of the road environment and, as a result, compromise safety. This study examined how engagement with a visual-manual NDRT affects the driving performance of PAV drivers. Thirty-seven participants were randomly assigned to one of two experimental conditions in a driving simulator. Each consisted of two simulated drives. The first experimental condition included one drive under manual driving conditions and another under partially automated driving conditions (i.e., L2). Both drives had no NDRT involved. The second experimental condition included one drive under L2 without an NDRT and one drive under L2, including engagement with an NDRT. Participants' eye movements and heart rate were recorded throughout the experiment. Across various measures, the findings showed that under L2 driving conditions, engagement with an NDRT impairs driving performance in two primary aspects: (1) drivers were less aware of road hazards, and (2) their mental workload was higher when they engaged with an NDRT. In addition, the findings reveal that for drivers engaged with an NDRT, the attentional time-sharing strategy between the NDRT and the roadway monitoring task affected the probability of identifying a hazard. This study shows the adverse effects of engagement with an NDRT under L2 driving conditions on driving performance. Future studies should examine different interventions to mitigate these effects, assuring that drivers are constantly aware of the roadway environment.

Abstract:In-vehicle information systems (IVIS) refer to a collection of features in vehicles that allow motorists to complete tasks (often unrelated to driving) while operating the vehicle. These systems may interfere, to a greater extent, with older drivers' ability to attend to the visual and cognitive demands of the driving environment. The current study sought to examine age-related differences in the visual, cognitive and temporal demands associated with IVIS interactions. Older and younger drivers completed a set of common tasks using the IVIS of a representative sample of six different vehicles while they drove along a low-density residential street. Evaluation measures included a Detection Response Task (DRT), to assess both cognitive and visual attention, and subjective measures following each condition using the NASA Task Load Index (TLX). Two age cohorts were evaluated: younger drivers between 21 and 36 years of age, and older drivers between 55 and 75 years of age. Participants completed experimental tasks involving interactions with the IVIS to achieve a specific goal (i.e., using the touch screen to tune the radio to a station; using voice commands to find a specified navigation destination, etc.). Performance of tasks varied according to different modes of interaction available in the vehicles. Older drivers took longer to complete tasks, were slower to react to stimuli, and reported higher task demand when interacting with IVIS. Older drivers stand to benefit the most from advancements in-vehicle technology, but ironically may struggle the most to use them. The results document significant age-related costs in the potential for distraction from IVIS interactions on the road.
