Abstract:Grounded in the power of our interconnectedness and humanity, this kitchen-table talk explores what it means to cultivate care, dignity, love, and respect in education. We begin by sharing personal offerings and stories that center us in this conversation, and these lead us to exploring the possibilities in showing care and feeling cared for in education spaces. We name the vitality and urgency of this work and discuss the impact of collaborating with others as we push forward. Recognizing a variety of challenges that serve to hinder our efforts, we close by reviewing what keeps us going and offering some advice to those unsure of their next opportunity for impact.

As we begin to reflect on what the past year has taught us, we want to consider how we as educators can challenge our own attitudes around academic misconduct and empower our students to take ownership of their education. In this session, we will look at the ways in which your inherent biases about student integrity could be surfacing in your online and onboard classroom. Abstract:The author describes how a teaching forum was started at his local institute, with the goal of helping to support and sustain faculty in their work as psychoanalytic teachers. Psychoanalytic teachers receive little training or mentorship, and there are few opportunities to discuss their classroom experiences, despite the challenges of shifting from the dyadic experience of the therapist's office to the group dynamics of the classroom. The author discusses various challenges for psychoanalytic teachers in making that transition, while also considering how our awareness of the frame, the risks of idealization and transference can aid us as teachers. An example of a forum meeting about the use of assigned readings demonstrates how a focus on the process of reading can be a more effective form of teaching foundational psychoanalytic concepts than simply teaching content or concepts from papers.

Adapting "Shut Up & Write!®" to Foster Productive Scholarly Writing in Graduate Nursing Students

Abstract:Productive scholarly writing is important for succeeding in graduate nursing programs such as thesis-and practice-based master's or doctoral degrees. Nurses pursuing graduate-level programs are expected to produce high-level scholarly writing manuscripts. However, writing typically is an independent and isolating endeavor. This article describes a student-led writing group ("Sit Down & Write!") that was adapted from the "Shut Up & Write!" (SUAW) structure. Five strategies were incorporated to meet the unique needs of graduate nursing students and foster productivity: (a) provide space for diverse groups of nursing students to participate, (b) offer flexible scheduling, (c) accommodate a flexible group structure, (d) host longer sessions, and (e) allow time to discuss writing goals. Overall, Sit Down and Write! provided a community of productive writing support. Future adaptations may consider providing a virtual option so sessions are accessible to students who are unable to join in-person. [J Contin Educ Nurs. 2021;52(7):313-318.].
Understanding How Nursing Students Experience Becoming Relational Practitioners: A Narrative Inquiry

Abstract:Background Teaching nursing students to become relational practitioners requires theoretical approaches and strategies that engender personal and aesthetic knowing. These qualities closely parallel those that define relational practice. The use of creative self-expression in supporting the development of student capacity for relational practice offers a viable approach. Purpose To learn how nursing students’ engagement in creative self-expression activities may impact the construction of their professional identity and capacity for relational practice as novice nurses. Method Clandinin and Connelly's narrative inquiry approach was used to explore nursing students’ experiences of learning how to become relational practitioners. Four new nurse graduates engaged in a follow-up focus group using Schwind's narrative reflective process to discuss the impact of a relational practice workshop series. Findings Bronwyn's story became the composite of the four participants. Two key narrative patterns emerged: being in service of others and being knowledgeable collaborative leaders. These entailed an intentional engagement in relationships with patients, which required attention to the co-constructed relational space. The creative approaches used to facilitate students’ learning informed their awareness that led to their transformation. Implications Educating future nurses who are relational, person-centered practitioners requires a holistic approach to teaching/learning which also includes creative self-expression.
Nurturing Interdisciplinary Competence in Academic Writing Classes: Two Taiwanese TESOL Professionals' Shared Journey.

Abstract:This study delineates two Taiwanese TESOL teachers’ efforts of combining English writing with entrepreneurship education to cultivate English majors’ interdisciplinary competence in academic writing classes. An integrated business-and-writing approach was proposed to foster English majors’ academic writing skills and entrepreneurial capacities. In this study, farming metaphors (“The two farmers,” Planting the seed,” “Growing the seed,” and “Harvest”) will be used to portray the instructors’ shared journey of guiding students to complete a creative business planning project. Feedback from students reveals that students gained content knowledge about the business world, and they learned how to write a business plan. For the two instructors, their endeavors to transform English writing courses to link academic knowledge with real-world purposes have encouraged them for more cross-campus collaborations to inject new energy into higher education institutions. To conclude the paper, pedagogical recommendations are provided to foster English majors’ learning of English beyond disciplinary boundaries.

Abstract:Creative skill-building is a major focus of educational systems around the world. In this article, we draw on data from four K-12 visual arts teachers to illustrate pedagogical strategies used to support students’ creative development. We adopt Teresa Amabile’s Componential Theory of Creativity to frame the teachers’ approaches to creative skill-building, identifying how they nurtured students’task motivation, domain-specific skills, and creativity-relevant processes. By presenting the teaching strategies in this way, we hope to enable art educators to recognize, shape, and enhance how their own teaching can support the development of student creativity in the visual arts classroom.

Abstract:There are many reasons for getting students to write, both in and outside class. Firstly, writing gives them more ‘thinking time’ than they get when they attempt spontaneous conversation. This allows them more opportunity for language processing that is thinking about the language whether they are involved in study or activation. When thinking about writing it is helpful to make a distinction between ‘writing for learning’ and ‘writing for writing’. In the case of the former, writing is used as an aide memoire or practice tool to help students practice and work with language they have been studying. You might, for example, ask a class to write five sentences using a given structure, or using five of the new words or phrases they have been learning. Writing activities like this are designed to give reinforcement to students. This is particularly useful for those who need a mix of visual and kenaesthetics activity. Another kind of writing for learning occurs when you have students write sentences in preparation for some other activity. Here, writing is an enabling activity. Abstract:In this article, a preschool teacher and an early childhood teacher educator describe and analyze their work co-creating and co-facilitating an early childhood inquiry group over seven years. The group consisted of veteran lead teachers, assistant teachers, instructional coaches, and an outside teacher educator at an urban, public preschool in San Francisco, California. Using the framework of narrative inquiry and portraiture, the article tells the story of the group’s formation, its structure, and its benefits for the participants’ personal and professional growth. The authors argue that an inquiry group is a highly viable, home-grown form of professional growth that relies on the group as a forum for self-study and reflection. The inquiry group provided the teachers with an increased understanding of child development and instructional strategies, a trusting public forum for sharing and validating their inquiry and teaching, and a communal opportunity to make visible the voices of teachers, children, and families.

Finally, by preparing choice-based assignments, students can take ownership of the unique product they create. Abstract:The aim of this article is to demonstrate the sophisticated and collaborative literacy desirings of children when they are given time, space, materials, and permission to create multimodally in Writers’ Studio. We share artifacts created by one second-grade student, Neil, for an in-depth look at the possibilities of writing as a creative construction. We use pedagogical documentation to visualize and better understand the processes of his writing. Thinking with poststructural ideas of becoming, fissures, and desire and the posthumanist idea of intra-activit-with-materials, we analyzed artifacts, videos of writing, conversations with students, photographs, and notes. Analyses helped us understand the processes of Neil’s literacy desiring, not simply the products. Even within a climate of mandates and standards being pushed on teachers, this type of multimodal teaching and learning can happen. As educators, we have to imagine the possibilities, trust students, and also give them permission to create other possibilities of writing.
From story to book: Discourse analysis between teacher and student in the creation of a culturally relevant text

Abstract:Lack of representation of children from nondominant cultural and linguistic backgrounds continues to be problematic in children’s literature, and especially within early literacy texts for beginning readers. One remedy is for children to tell their own stories through the language experience approach, which can then be printed into culturally relevant texts and used for beginning reading material in classrooms. To truly capture a student’s story, especially if the student is an emergent bilingual, a teacher must listen very closely and take care when adjusting the child’s story. Two Bakhtinian concepts support the careful examination of a teacher’s scribing of story in this study: chronotope, used here as the time-space sphere above the text, and revoicing, or the retelling of a child’s story that is paraphrased or altered. Findings show that gesture within the chronotope of the story is an especially generative tool for student storytelling and that teachers must reflect closely on intentional or unintentional reasons for revoicing a child’s story. Language experience approach holds possibilities for the creation of children’s culturally relevant texts. As such, it is important that teachers reflect on their language experience approach techniques so that the book remains true to the child’s story.

Abstract:Background/Context Portfolio assessment is a popular form of authentic assessment, but often portfolios become simply folders full of papers rather than student reflections on their work. Purpose/Objective/Research Question/Focus of Study The author conducted a study aiming to help the ninth-grade students in his English language arts classroom be more reflective about their reading and writing portfolios. Research Design This study was conducted as a teacher research study in two parts. The first part studied the effect on the reflectiveness of students when using a 10-minute one-on-one presentation with the teacher instead of a cover letter. From the data received from these first-semester presentations, the teacher-researcher categorized the students’ statements into reflective and nonreflective categories. In the second part of the study, the teacher used these categories to teach students to speak more reflectively during their second-semester presentations. Conclusions/Recommendations The author found that students can be taught to be more reflective about their work and that this newfound reflectiveness helps students take more control in their literacy education.

Abstract:As top-down mandates regarding what collaboration should look like continue to evolve from the policy level, it is critical to engage the knowledge of teachers – the ones experiencing the collaboration – to inform teacher learning as well as the conditions within schools that help productive collaboration partnerships to evolve. This article seeks to examine the foundational aspects that underpin a mutually productive collaborative relationship between myself – a full time high school English teacher – and another full-time English teacher at the public, regional school in the Northeast where we taught. Utilizing a participant research design, I drew upon audio-recorded dialogue of meetings we had to plan out curriculum and instruction while teaching during the 2020-2021 school year. Findings include that while conflict and disagreement play an important role, agreement around philosophical beliefs that get at common purposes of teaching and learning as well as a commitment to joint work are essential to the facilitation of actions such as suggesting new ideas, considering alternate viewpoints, and embracing conflict that enable progress. Such actions yielded critical reflection on past practice and change to current and/or future practice.

Abstract:abstract: This essay explores the tension between pursuing meaningful work in instruction librarianship and the realities of working in a society in which many jobs provide little fulfillment or pleasure, or, as the journalist Sarah Jaffe puts it, “Work won’t love you back.” Drawing on a recent conference keynote by Anne Helen Petersen, C. Wright Mills’s conception of sociological imagination, and an ecological model of teacher agency, I propose that one way librarians can sustain their teaching practices and preserve their well-being is by actively investigating how social structures and relationships influence their teaching roles.

Abstract:Writing skills grow along a predictable developmental trajectory, yet what is considered "writing" can look very different in preschool and early elementary classrooms. The way in which writing may look in each setting reflects that teachers are working with different sets of learning standards, with different conceptualizations of writing to inform their pedagogical decisions (Tortorelli et al., Reading Research Quarterly, 57(2), 729–752, 2021). These differences translate into varied expectations for what young children are capable of and how these skills should be supported (Tortorelli et al., Reading Research Quarterly, 57(2), 729–752, 2021). We recommend that across the 3–6 age band teachers provide meaningful writing experiences that link composing with writing concepts and transcription skills. This article provides concrete instructional strategies to support an integrative approach to writing and includes guidance for writing concepts, handwriting, spelling, and composing to support a successful preschool to kindergarten writing transition for children.

Abstract:Research shows that preservice English teachers (PSETs) lack opportunities to respond to student writing and that they may view student writing through a deficit lens. To address this need, the authors developed the Writing Mentors (WM) program, a digital field placement that gave PSETs experience providing feedback to high school writers. In this analysis, we examine how PSETs’ views of response were shaped by their digital interactions with high school writers. The challenges of interacting asynchronously created opportunities for PSETs to identify limitations in the mode of communication, propose approaches to providing feedback, and reflect on how teacher feedback can nurture or constrain relationships with students. These findings point to the promise of critical reflection on the disruptive potential of digital feedback for supporting PSTs’ response to student writing.
