Abstract:A common model for connecting theory to practice within literacy teacher preparation programs involves preservice teachers (PTs) working in field-based courses to contextualize their learning. Field-based courses create hybrid spaces for personalizing curricula and following students’ lead outside of the pressures of normal classrooms. Researchers note that although PTs have found field-based courses in diverse, minority school settings helpful, many PTs feel unprepared to work with diverse populations. There is a need for literacy teacher preparation programs to enhance field experiences and incorporate culturally sustaining pedagogy (CSP) within coursework. Few studies, however, have explicitly examined the role of CSP in literacy courses or field-based coursework. Moreover, even coursework intended to prepare teachers to work in diverse settings often centers the experiences of White PTs and reinforces pedagogical practices associated with White cultural and academic norms. In this qualitative case study, we explore the potential of experiences in field-based teacher education courses to disrupt White values, traditions, and curricular norms when CSP is centered and when PTs have the opportunity to work with, and learn from, young students. Findings highlight innovative ways three PTs worked in community with young students and built innovative curricula around their students’ funds of knowledge: by restorying deficit narratives about students’ literacies, following students’ lead into multimodal literacies, and bridging linguistic differences through translanguaging.

Abstract:The aim of this article is to demonstrate the sophisticated and collaborative literacy desirings of children when they are given time, space, materials, and permission to create multimodally in Writers’ Studio. We share artifacts created by one second-grade student, Neil, for an in-depth look at the possibilities of writing as a creative construction. We use pedagogical documentation to visualize and better understand the processes of his writing. Thinking with poststructural ideas of becoming, fissures, and desire and the posthumanist idea of intra-activit-with-materials, we analyzed artifacts, videos of writing, conversations with students, photographs, and notes. Analyses helped us understand the processes of Neil’s literacy desiring, not simply the products. Even within a climate of mandates and standards being pushed on teachers, this type of multimodal teaching and learning can happen. As educators, we have to imagine the possibilities, trust students, and also give them permission to create other possibilities of writing.

Abstract:A critical function of schooling is to provide young writers with opportunities to explore real-life, out-of-school experiences through writing. However, literacy instruction in U.S. schools primarily (and sometimes almost exclusively) focuses on the tested skills, with little recognition of children’s diverse backgrounds and experiences. The predominance of English-only instruction further limits the potential for many children who speak languages other than English at home to develop a sense of agency that is fundamental to academic development. Although bilingual and bidialectal children bring rich linguistic and cultural repertoires that could serve as resources for the development of school-based reading and writing, curriculum is seldom structured to take advantage of these resources. This study reports on two minoritized kindergarten students in a dual language (DL) classroom. The study documents how the teacher’s use of “buddy pairs” created a classroom environment where students could take risks and participate in translanguaging. Results show that both emergent bilingual students benefited from a classroom environment in which their home language was valued and translanguaging was encouraged.

Abstract:This paper explores what happened in the English classroom when two innovative projects merged and spoken word poetry became part of multilingual digital storytelling. As a Spoken Word Educator and Teacher Educator, we wanted to explore the complexity of bringing together these multimodal art forms. Making a poem come to life though film is hard and the research presented here interrogates these processes through working with a group of 13–14 year old students in the English classroom. In the process of bringing together spoken word and multilingual digital storytelling, these students interrogate notions of belonging and uncover stories that matter through emotional and creative encounters with personal and cultural artefacts. These young people discover a shared imagery across languages and cultures and reclaim ownership over learning in the English classroom. Foregrounding spoken word and multilingualism in the English classroom had a transformative effect on young people's self-expression and imaginative thinking.

Abstract:Future teachers often manifest a low confidence in their own writing and do not see themselves as writers. Developing an identity as authors requires ample opportunities for writing that sustain preservice teachers’ discourses and cultural models. As writing across the content areas is considered a powerful way of learning, creating spaces for future teachers to strengthen their writing skills and their predisposition for teaching writing must become a priority in teacher preparation. This article proposes that autobiographical poetry in particular allows aspiring teachers the freedom to explore their cultural identity while drawing upon various social literacies and can serve as a bridge between personal and professional reflection. Specifically, this paper features autobiographical poetry-writing activities implemented in two teacher education courses at a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) in the Southwest of the US—a Bilingual Education/Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) course with 20 students, and a Content Area Literacy course with 34 students. These pedagogical practices are contextualized within a sociocultural approach that focuses on encouraging students to tap into their cultural and linguistic backgrounds as they prepare to develop their own pedagogies centered on agency and identity.

Abstract:L2 motivation is a relational phenomenon, shaped by teacher responsiveness (Lamb, 2017; Ushioda, 2009). Little, however, is known about the practices in which responsiveness is manifested. Drawing on research from the culturally responsive teaching paradigm (Petrone, 2013), and highlighting the role of empathy and perspective taking (Warren, 2018), the aim of this ethnographic case study of two lessons with a focus on poetry is to develop a relational understanding of the evolution of motivation. Analyses reveal how perspective taking has instructional and interactional dimensions, and how connections between lesson content and funds of knowledge with origins in students’ interactions with popular culture bring additional layers of meaning to learning. It is suggested that while connections that arise through perspective taking practices shape students’ in-the-moment motivational responses, they also accumulate in ways that lead to enduring motivational dispositions.

Abstract:The study accentuates bilingual creativity as the pedagogical intervention of postcolonial creative writing strategy in poetry class through the writing of haiku and short poems. Twenty-five students in their freshmen year at the English Department were engaged in reading a culturally local text (Sumatra-Javanese ethnic poetry to compose poetry from a post-colonial perspective). The workshop's five phases exploring, inciting inspirations, drafting, editing, and peer feedback provided the student, as a novice writer, with the benefit of familiarizing themselves with character, theme, and cultural issues; developing a cognitive process to negotiate different meanings in their first and second languages; and exploring creativity to write their own poetry in the second language. The scripts written in English are the product of poetry classes, which reveal students' localized knowledge and cultural literacy. The works reflect the participants’ cultural identity, even though English is the dominant language showcased in the almost fifty poems composed by the novice writers. The existence of local languages points to the development of their bilingual creativity; students in the poetry classroom are not only able to handle the meaning in the first and second languages, but also to promote their local culture to the global world.

Abstract:Project-based learning (PBL) approaches seek to challenge the grammar of schooling by providing opportunities for students to (a) explore meaningful questions using multiple disciplinary lenses; (b) read, interpret, and produce a wide range of texts as they engage in disciplinary inquiry; and (c) develop and use a range of social-emotional skills as they work together to solve real-world problems. As PBL gains momentum in K–12 classrooms, we need to better understand the ways in which teachers and students take up these opportunities. This case study explored how one third-grade teacher's enactment of a PBL curriculum provided opportunities for students to learn and use social-emotional skills and literacy in the service of disciplinary learning. Findings revealed that the curriculum and enactment diverged from the grammar of schooling by providing opportunities for students to use literacy as a tool for disciplinary inquiry while simultaneously advancing goals associated with social-emotional learning.

Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in the South

Abstract:At many South African schools poetry is considered to be a “problem genre”, with both teachers and learners viewing it as “difficult” and as a genre that lowers schools’ pass rates in the National Senior Certificate (NSC) (Matric) examination. For this reason, schools tend to shy away from prescribing poetry at the Further Education and Training (FET) level (that is, in Grades 10-12). This article argues that the poems that are prescribed for English First Additional Language (EFAL) classes are difficult for learners to relate to because of having been written in contexts that are temporally and geographically distant from the learners’ life-worlds. In addition, many learners may not understand the particular variety of English that is used in canonical poetry. A new teaching anthology, entitled Amazwi Amasha (New Voices), containing South African post-1994 poetry, is in the process of being compiled to address the problem of learners’ alienation from their prescribed poems. This anthology forms the topic of this article. The theory and methodology underpinning the selection of poems and the design of learning activities to accompany each poem are described, along with the selection of themes that are relevant to young South Africans. The argument concludes that a more multimodal, interactive approach to teaching and learning poetry can help tap into the resources of this capacious and fascinating genre.
Blackout Poetry: Eclipsing With Words and Images to Illuminate Ideas

Abstract:Integrating literacy practices in science classrooms can help students read complex scientific text, write arguments as part of shared cross-disciplinary practices, and engage with content. In the Linking Science, Mathematics, and Literacy for All Learners program, middle school science, mathematics, ELA, and special education teachers have been implementing multimodal STEM text sets that include a range of texts and scaffolds that support instruction and students' content learning. One of these strategies combines reading and writing in unique and creative ways: poetry writing! Blackout and found poems are accessible approaches to help students focus on key words and ideas in a complex text, pull out those words to work with them, and then reconstruct them into a poem. This approach can be used in a variety of ways, and in some of the examples provided, students include an altered page from a scientific article on which they find their words, black out the rest of the text, and then illustrate the entire document to help show their message.

Abstract:"The present article describes a small-scale poetry project intended to foster culturally responsive learning in the C1-level university language course. The instructor of this course had the opportunity to invite an aspiring poet, Ivan Bio from Sierra Leone, to a reading of three of his poems to be performed during one of the sessions. Designed as an extension activity for one of the course units, the project required students to complete a set of tasks to prepare for the poetry reading as well as engage in follow-up activities to reflect on the experience. By describing and analyzing the implementation of this reading session, the authors aim to explore the potential benefits of poetic discourse for language courses based on action-oriented, learner-centered approaches. Against the background of the CEFR descriptors relating to the reception of creative/literary language and the mediation of texts, the authors intend to show that the interpretation and analysis of poetic texts can help students not only to increase their sensitivity to and awareness of the ambivalence of language, but also to in turn expand their communicative language competences, most notably their mediation skills. To achieve these goals, students were asked not only to analyze and explain the poems to their peers, but also to formulate personal responses to the texts. A striking observation was that the context of remote learning where students communicated in a Zoom meeting did not seem to interfere with their willingness and ability to express their attitudes and even their emotions. This made the meeting an emotionally profound experience for everybody involved, and the authors will argue that not only the range but also the intensity of the language learning experience can be greatly enhanced by integrating poetry in the foreign language classroom. The article intends to demonstrate that the CEFR with its Companion Volume (CEFR/CV) and their operationalization in action-oriented approaches form a perfect basis for expanding learners’ language competences through poetry. "

Abstract:Arts and Humanities in Higher Education, Ahead of Print. To explore the affective domains embedded in academic development and teacher practice, a team of academic developers was invited to consider a poem and how it reflects the emotions and feelings underpinning experiences as teachers within Higher Education. We used a method of arts-informed, collective biography to evaluate a poem to draw upon and share memories to interrogate lived experiences. Our research is framed using the lens of pedagogic frailty model to see how affective and discursive encounters are produced and impact us. We contend that collective arts-based and biographical approaches can provide alternative ways for ourselves and teachers to examine their own pedagogic frailty.
Poetry and Motion: Rhythm, Rhyme and Embodiment as Oral Literacy Pedagogy for Young Additional Language Learners

Abstract:Literacy pedagogy that integrates oracy, poetry and embodiment can foster children's language development in multiple ways: (1) oracy is foundational to children's emergent literacy as writing extends from oral language, (2) poetry uses rhythm and rhyme to support letter-recognition and the learning of phonemes and morphemes, (3) embodiment and roleplay provide semiotic support and opportunities for expressive and receptive communication. This article shares findings from a phenomenological case study investigating how literacy pedagogy that integrated oracy, poetry and embodiment impacted three additional language students aged 6. A series of weekly literacy classes in a school in Sydney's multicultural western region were observed and recorded on video. This instrument was able to capture 'micro-moments' of learning between peers, depicting how physicalisation and the use of rhythm and rhyme effectively engaged students whose first language was not used in the classroom. Using a hermeneutic phenomenological approach to data analysis, case study findings revealed that embodied explorations of poetry immersed participants socially and imaginatively whilst pushing them beyond their additional language comfort zone. The pedagogy was also shown to increase comprehension and support the acquisition of new vocabulary.
Engaging the Social Imagination in the College Classroom Through Radiant Readings of Global Picturebooks

Abstract:Building on Kelly Wissman’s (2019) work, the article describes and analyzes artifacts from the author’s college children’s literature class, during which students read radiantly: in ways that may take them outside of themselves, their realities, and points of view, “like rays emitting from the sun, to seek out alternative perspectives, new directions, and unique pathways” (p. 16). The analysis of these collected student artifacts is guided by Wissman’s understanding of the social imagination as the capacity of a reader to imagine “the thoughts, feelings, and experiences of others” as well as “to invent visions of what should be and what might be” (p. 15). It also builds on the theoretical framework developed by Kathy Short (2019) in relation to the social responsibility that needs to be practiced and cultivated by those involved in the creating, teaching, and reading of global children’s literature. Nurturing reading as an act of creativity and fostering dialogic inquiry around global picturebooks is shown to be quite effective in engaging college students’ social imagination. The author brings evidence from the prompts and artifacts that supports this effectiveness, demonstrating the different ways in which students were able to read Two White Rabbits (2015) and The Arrival (2007) radiantly. The prompts that were designed for these immigration-themed picturebooks were successful in nurturing reading as an act of creativity and fostering dialogic inquiry, and thus succeeded in engaging the students’ social imagination. A main reason behind their success was that, by design, they required readers to use their imagination and creativity as well as pay close attention to the picturebooks’ visual aesthetics in order to fill in the gaps. Another important reason behind the students’ radiant readings was the selection of these specific picturebooks, which fit Jessica Whitelaw’s (2017) definition of disquieting picturebooks as they encourage their readers to embrace unfamiliarity and discomfort.
Student Team Reading and Writing: A Cooperative Learning Approach to Middle School Literacy Instruction

Abstract:The goal of this project was to create a middle school literacy program that was more responsive to the needs and abilities of early adolescents in urban middle schools. The program components included: (a) cooperative learning classroom processes; (b) a literature anthology for high interest reading material; (c) explicit instruction in reading comprehension; (e) integrated reading, writing, and language arts instruction; and (f) a writing process approach to language arts. The study was conducted in 5 schools in a large urban school district, 2 implementing Student Team Reading and Writing (STRW) and 3 comparison schools. The results indicated that the students in STRW had significantly higher achievement in reading vocabulary, reading comprehension, and language expression. The results suggest that a multifaceted approach to restructuring can effectively improve the achievement of students in urban middle schools.

Abstract:Poetry is an expression of thoughts and feelings with words. Poetry in language learning is the bridge to communicate ideas and unheard voice. This research is aimed at exploring the voice and choice, the emotion and expression of language learners from three poetry of three different poets in EFL classroom with mindfulness approach. Mindfulness approach allows them to be more aware of the novel situation, flexible to context, having multi perspectives, and create a production. The method used is narrative inquiry with mindful journal as instrument. The findings showed that the poetry the learners write have the power to explore the learners’ ability in stimulating their truest voice and choice from within, as well as to stimulate their language creativity and productivity. By having sensitivity, the creativity is born and productivity is born too. In the context of language learning, the language learners are more open about their identity, their purest voice, and their alternative solution of life’s problem. Mindfulness is not only as tool to stimulate the voice but also stimulate the choice of the poets.
Emerging Pathways: A Teacher/Researcher's Reflexive Journey Implementing Literacy-Based Science Interventions With Adolescent English Language Learners

Abstract:This study explored the impact of instructional interventions with four Middle School English Language Learners in Science. The initial focus was to determine the impact of explicit academic vocabulary instruction, including cognates, and small-group guided discussions in order to facilitate the acquisition of cognates, academic vocabulary, and comprehension of scientific concepts. To accomplish this, various methods were implemented to gather data: observational and reflective field notes, a cognate-circling task, along with group and individual interviews. Upon the initial data analysis, an emerging question surfaced which added an additional dimension to the research, and shed light on the complexity of the teacher/research role. Thus, data analyzed and reflected both original and emerging questions, uncovering various patterns that impacted students’ learning. It also provided insight into how a researcher’s roles can affect the types and quality of data. Implications are provided for researchers, classroom teachers, bilingual teachers, professional development providers, and university programs developing new teachers.

Abstract:This article describes a literacy project with fourth‐grade Latino students in a bilingual U.S. classroom and provides some insights on the importance of encouraging children's uses of two languages for communicating, reading, and writing in the classroom. The author discusses the following implications: Teachers should encourage their students to write about topics from their homes and communities, including those of relatives living in other countries. This funds‐of‐knowledge orientation draws on understandings and experiences of the students, what they know and care about, and also lets the children become aware that their lives outside of school have meaning and importance within the classroom. Written translation can develop metalinguistic awareness among bilingual children. It is a sophisticated process that demands that young writers use all that they know about oral and written language. Encouraging students to work collaboratively while writing, to use both languages that they are developing, and to write for multiple audiences can be very productive processes that assist in the development of literacy in both English and home languages, as well fostering children's desire to write in their classrooms. Abstract:The linguistic demands of poetry writing, quite apart from the transcriptional aspects of writing, make this perhaps the most challenging form of writing children encounter in school. These would include, among others, poetic techniques such as using line breaks and chunking meaning in stanzas; invention and handling of imagery; playfulness and ambition in vocabulary. In this paper I want to examine some of the linguistic and cognitive demands which writing poems makes on children. I will analyse these using Sharples' model of thinking about writing, specifically his description of ‘rhetorical and content modes’; and I will argue that poetry writing makes unique demands upon children in both of these modes. I will critically examine how the content and rhetorical modes can be expanded through the use of published poems as literary forms, and will discuss the potentials and pitfalls of this approach.

Abstract:This manuscript highlights the work of a 6th grade teacher, Author C, who engages in the practice of reading aloud regularly. In order to present this work as co-authored research, we utilize the methodology of narrative inquiry and, in so doing, present the story of this teacher as a foregrounded component of the process. This article is the collaboration and co-construction among two researchers and a teacher, organized according to the teacher’s seminal steps in literacy, their choices in selecting and sharing texts, and the challenges they faced in their pivot to online instruction in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
