Abstract:A portable and integrated electrochemical detection system has been constructed for on-site and real-time detection of chemical oxygen demand (COD). The system mainly consists of four parts: (i) sensing electrode with a copper-cobalt bimetallic oxide (CuCoOx)-modified screen-printed electrode; (ii) an integrated electrochemical detector for the conversion, amplification, and transmission of weak signals; (iii) a smartphone installed with a self-developed Android application (APP) for issuing commands, receiving, and displaying detection results; and (iv) a 3D-printed microfluidic cell for the continuous input of water samples. Benefiting from the superior catalytic capability of CuCoOx, the developed system shows a high detection sensitivity with 0.335 μA/(mg/L) and a low detection limit of 5.957 mg/L for COD determination and possessing high anti-interference ability to chloride ions. Moreover, this system presents good consistency with the traditional dichromate method in COD detection of actual water samples. Due to the advantages of cost effectiveness, portability, and point-of-care testing, the system shows great potential for water quality monitoring, especially in resource-limited remote areas.

Abstract:Copper is the third most abundant heavy metal in the environment important for human survival. However, in excess it can have deleterious effects on aquatic as well as terrestrial beings. The detection of Cu 2+ has huge significance in food safety and environment monitoring. The conventional detection methods are costly and complex. Therefore, we have designed a waste derived material for Cu 2+ determination in complex samples. Our work is based on the eco-friendly synthesis of waste derived Al-MOF with remarkable properties grafted with L-Cysteine to develop the novel MIL-53(Al)-Cys sensor. The formation of the sensing probe was verified by various characterization techniques including FE-SEM, HR-TEM, PXRD, FTIR, UV-Vis and Photoluminescence spectroscopies. The developed waste-derived probe showed multifunctional properties with the visual and fluorescent detection of Cu 2+ ions with high sensitivity and fast response time. The proposed waste-derived fluoro-chromogenic sensor exhibited a “turn of” detection response mechanism with a visual color change only the presence of Cu 2+ ions. The results showed reproducible, selective and stable response with a LOD of 0.2 ng/mL, which is lower than the permissible levels. Therefore, the observed results highlight the potential of developed waste-derived MIL-53(Al)-Cys chemosensor as a promising platform in water remediation applications.

Abstract:Chemical oxygen demand (COD) is an important indicator of organic pollutants in water bodies. Most of the present testing methods have the disadvantages of having complicated steps, being time-consuming, and using toxic and hazardous substances. In this work, rapid potentiometric detection of chemical oxygen demand (COD) using a portable self-powered sensor chip was successfully developed. The indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode was etched by laser, and the photocatalytic materials TiO2/CuS and Pt were modified onto the photoanode and the cathode to prepare the sensor chip. Based on the principle of photocatalytic degradation, organic pollutants can be oxidized by TiO2/CuS, and the concentration will affect the generated voltage. The quantitative detection of COD in the range of 0.05–50 mg/L can be rapidly achieved within 5 min by a miniature device. Abstract:Chemical oxygen demand (COD) is an important parameter to estimate water quality, and many methods have been developed to measure COD. However, these methods are not satisfying because of the use of hazardous materials, the interference of chloride, and complicated operations. Meanwhile, the development of portable sensors for field testing COD is still at an early stage. In this work, we propose a new portable COD sensor based on the photoelectrochromic principle. The whole detection can be conducted with a small indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode modified with photocatalytic material TiO2/g-C3N4 and the electrochromic material Prussian blue. Under light illumination, organic pollution can be photocatalytically oxidized by TiO2/g-C3N4 and photogenerated electrons are transferred to Prussian blue, which will be reduced to colorless Prussian white. So the COD value can be obtained through the color change of the ITO electrode. By adjusting the electrode size, the detection range is flexible from 0.025 to 750 mg/L, and this sensor has a good repeatability and stability. Abstract:Simple, portable, and low-cost paper-based sensors are alternative devices that have the potential to replace high-cost sensing technologies. The compatibility of the paper base biosensors for both chemical and biochemical accentuates its feasibility for application in clinical diagnosis, environmental monitoring, and food quality monitoring. High concentration of copper in blood serum and urine is associated with diseases like liver diseases, carcinomas, acute and chronic infections, rheumatoid arthritis, etc. Detection of copper concentration can give an early sign of Alzheimer disease. Apart from that genetic Wilson's disease can be detected by evaluating the concentration of copper in the urine. In view of the above advantages, a novel and the highly sensitive paper-based sensor has been designed for the selective detection of Cu 2+ ions. The fast and highly sensitive chemiresistive multi-dye system sensor can detect Cu 2+ ions selectively in as low as 2.23 ppm concentration. Least interference has been observed for counter ion in the detection of Cu 2+ . Copper chloride, nitrate, and acetate were used to validate the detection process. This assay provides a very high selectivity of Cu 2+ ion over other metal cations such as Na + , Mg 2+ , Ca 2+ , etc. The easy preparation and high stability of dye solutions, easy functionalization of the paper-based sensors, high selectivity over other cations, low interference of counter anion, and significantly low detection limit of 2.23 ppm make it an effective Cu 2+ ion sensor for real-time application in near future.

Abstract:A dual-mode colorimetric/fluorescence pH sensor was fabricated from carbon dots (CDs). It exhibited a pH response via both fluorescence and visible colorimetric observation. The CDs solution changed from red to yellow when the pH changed from acid to alkaline. Meanwhile, the color of pH test paper that incorporated the CDs changed from purple-red to orange and then to yellow. The CD fluorescence maximum was at 630 nm in acid solution and 590 nm under neutral and alkaline conditions. The fluorescence of the pH test paper changed from red to orange and then to yellow, which was better than that of the pure CDs solution. The CDs exhibited highly selective and reversible fluorescence quenching with respect to Cu2+ ions because of strong binding and fast chelating kinetics. There was a linear relationship between fluorescence quenching and Cu2+ concentration, suggesting the other promising practical usage of this sensing system. The versatile CDs-based pH sensor thus provides a basis for developing sustainable and fast-response dual-mode pH meters as well as Cu2+ sensing.
Colorimetric and Fluorescent Sensing of Copper Ions in Water through o-Phenylenediamine-Derived Carbon Dots

Abstract:Fluorescent nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon dots (NSCDs) were synthesized using a simple one-step hydrothermal method starting from o-phenylenediamine (OPD) and ammonium sulfide. The prepared NSCDs presented a selective dual optical response to Cu(II) in water through the arising of an absorption band at 660 nm and simultaneous fluorescence enhancement at 564 nm. The first effect was attributed to formation of cuprammonium complexes through coordination with amino functional groups of NSCDs. Alternatively, fluorescence enhancement can be explained by the oxidation of residual OPD bound to NSCDs. Both absorbance and fluorescence showed a linear increase with an increase of Cu(II) concentration in the range 1–100 μM, with the lowest detection limit of 100 nM and 1 μM, respectively. NSCDs were successfully incorporated in a hydrogel agarose matrix for easier handling and application to sensing. The formation of cuprammonium complexes was strongly hampered in an agarose matrix while oxidation of OPD was still effective. As a result, color variations could be perceived both under white light and UV light for concentrations as low as 10 μM. Since these color changes were similarly perceived in tap and lake water samples, the present method could be a promising candidate for simple, cost-effective visual monitoring of copper onsite.

Abstract:Today, the world is in a constant need to monitor environmental pollutants especially water contamination with heavy metals that causes health problems for human beings and other organisms. Therefore, many different analytical techniques have been developed to detect these toxic elements accurately. Since of their high level sensitivity as well as low detection limit, electrochemical sensors are of great interest to researchers for the quantitative detection of these harmful chemicals. In the current study, CeCo3O6-1, CeCo3O6-2, and CeCo3O6-3 nanocomposites were successfully prepared and then used to modify the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) with the aid of Nafion as a binder in order to enhance the detection of cadmium and copper ions by using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The behaviour of the analyte was precisely examined on the modified GCE. Besides, number of analytical parameters including pH, the amount of nanocomposite, the deposition potential, and the deposition time were investigated in order to optimize and enhance Cd(II) and Cu(II) detection. The results showed that the maximum sensor response was at pH 3.0 by using CeCo3O6-2 nanocomposite as compared to CeCo3O6-1 and CeCo3O6-3 at an approximate deposition potential of −1.0 V and deposition time of 240 s. The developed sensor displayed an extraordinary linear response to Cd(II) and Cu(II) ions (0.5–5 mg/L) with relative standard deviation (RSD) of 8.7 and 10.4 and limits of detection (LOD) of 0.024 and 0.013 mg/L, respectively, under the ideal settings. Through the simultaneous detection of Cd(II) and Cu(II) ions as well as individual metal measurements, the performance of the modified electrode was evaluated. Tap water samples from real sources were utilized to demonstrate the sensor's usability. The findings confirmed that the designed electrochemical sensor based on CeCo3O6-2/GCE is effective, stable, and robust for Cd(II) and Cu(II) ions detection.

Determination of Chemical Oxygen Demand Based on Photoelectrocatalysis of Nanoporous Tio2 Electrodes

Abstract:Here we report on a novel, rapid, and environmentally friendly methodology for the determination of chemical oxygen demand (COD) using an electrochemically reduced nanoporous TiO2 electrode. A highly ordered nanoporous structure is grown directly onto a Ti plate through a three-step anodic oxidation process. Subsequent to electrochemical reduction, the nanoporous TiO2 electrode demonstrates a significant enhancement in photoelectrocatalytic activity. An advanced photoelectrochemical method based on the reduced nanoporous TiO2 is successfully developed and employed to quantify COD values in both synthetic and actual wastewater samples. Specifically, a typical processing period of 1-2 min, a practical detection limit of 8 mg L-1, and a linear range of 20-250 mg L-1 COD are achieved. More importantly, the proposed method is in excellent agreement with the standard K2Cr2O7 COD determination technique, albeit with a more rapid analysis period. Further merits include the negation of the necessity of any toxic (Cr2O7-) and highly corrosive (H2SO4) reagents, simple and automatic operation, and environmental compatibility. Abstract:The need for the sensing of environmental pollutants cannot be overemphasized in the twenty-first century. Herein, a sensor has been developed for the sensitive and selective detection of copper (Cu2+), lead (Pb2+) and cadmium (Cd2+) as major heavy metals polluting water environment. A screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) modified by fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) was successfully fabricated for sensing Cu2+, Pb2+ and Cd2+. Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) were deployed for the analysis of ternary analytes. CV was set at a potential range of − 0.8 to + 0.2 V at a scan rate of 100 mV/s, and DPV at a potential range of − 0.8 to + 0.1 V, scan rate of 50 mV/s, pulse rate of 0.2 V and pulse width of 50 ms. DPV technique was applied through the modified electrode for sensitive and selective determination of Cu2+, Pb2+ and Cd2+ at a concentration range of 0.01 to 0.27 ppm for Cu2+, Pb2+ and Cd2+. Tolerance for the highest possible concentration of foreign substances such as Mg2+, K+, Na+, NO3−, and SO42− was observed with a relative error less than ± 3%. The sensitivity of the modified electrode was at 0.17, 0.42 and 0.18 ppm for Cd2+, Pb2+ and Cu2+, respectively, while the limits of detection (LOD) achieved for cadmium, lead and copper were 0.0028, 0.0042 and 0.014 ppm, respectively. The quality of the modified electrode for sensing Cu2+, Pb2+ and Cd2+ at trace levels is in accordance with the World Health Organization (WHO) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) water regulation standard. The modified SPCE provides a cost-effective, dependable and stable means of detecting heavy metal ions (Cu2+, Pb2+ and Cd2+) in an aqueous solution.

Abstract:A groundbreaking optical sensing membrane has been engineered for the accurate assessment of copper ions. The pliable poly(vinyl chloride) membrane is formulated through the integration of sodium tetraphenylborate (Na-TPB), 4-(2-hydroxy-4-nitro azobenzene)-2-methyl-quinoline (HNAMQ), and tri-n-octyl phosphine oxide (TOPO), in conjunction with o-nitrophenyl octyl ether (o-NPOE). The sensor membrane undergoes a thorough investigation of its composition to optimize performance, revealing that HNAMQ serves a dual role as both an ionophore and a chromoionophore. Simultaneously, TOPO contributes to enhancing the complexation of HNAMQ with copper ions. Demonstrating a linear range for Cu 2+ ions spanning from 5.0 × 10 −9 to 7.5 × 10 −6 M, the proposed sensor membrane showcases detection and quantification limits of 1.5 × 10 −9 and 5.0 × 10 −9 M, respectively. Rigorous assessments of potential interferences from other cations and anions revealed no observable disruptions in the detection of Cu 2+ . With no discernible HNAMQ leaching, the membrane demonstrates rapid response times and excellent durability. The sensor exhibits remarkable selectivity for Cu 2+ ions and can be regenerated through exposure to 0.05 M EDTA. Successful application of the sensor in determining the presence of Cu 2+ in biological (blood, liver and meat), soil, food (coffee, black tea, sour cherry juice, black currant, and milk powder) and environmental water samples underscores its efficacy.

Copper oxide nanostructure-based sensitive amperometric detection of sulfite from wastewater

Abstract:In the current study, we synthesized copper oxide nanostructures (CuO NSs) via a facile hydrothermal procedure. We characterized them with the help of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). SEM study revealed that CuO NSs inherited nanoneedles-based flowering geometry with a porous nature, while XRD proved the crystalline nature of these NSs. When deposited on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE), these nanostructures are displayed as a sensitive sulfite detection tool in the sample matrix. The results showed that sodium hydroxide, with pH 10.0, was the best-supporting electrolyte among all electrolytes studied. The as-prepared sulfite sensor performed well in a linear working range of 10–100 μM sulfite with the low detection limit (LOD) of the amperometry technique used to evaluate the analytical performance of the electrode, such as a limit of 1.12 μM. The developed sensor was highly stable and reproducible, showing a relative standard deviation of 2.17% for 10 cycles. The sensor also exhibited more selectivity for sulfite in the presence of probable interfering species, including cyanide, sulfate, chloride, and nitrate. The findings further proved the CuO/GCE-Nafion-based sensor as a sensitive diagnostic tool for quantifying or monitoring health-hazardous sulfite in the environmental sample matrices.

Abstract:A nickel nanoparticle/nafion-graphene oxide (NiNP/Nf-GO) modified screen-printed electrode (SPE) was developed for rapid and environmentally friendly electrochemical determination of chemical oxygen demand (COD). The morphology and the electrochemical performance of the SPEs with different surface modifications were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, amperometry, and cyclic voltammetry, respectively. Interestingly, incorporation of graphene oxide as supporting materials to the NiNP/Nf-GO modified SPE enables high catalyst loading and electrode contact, leading to excellent electrocatalytic oxidation ability. A flow detection system was constructed based the newly designed NiNP/Nf-GO modified SPE with USB connection, a 3D-printed thin-layer flow cell (TLFC), and a peristaltic pump. The flow detection system showed an excellent performance for COD analysis with a linear detection range of 0.1~400 mg L−1 and a lower detection limit of 0.05 mg L−1 with an oxidation potential of 0.45 V. The system was further applied to determine the COD in surface water samples. The results were consistent with those obtained by using the standard method (ISO 6060).

Abstract:An electrochemical analysis system for rapid determination of chemical oxygen demand (COD) in flow state was established. A planar electrode modified with GO-NiNPs was matched with a 3D printed thin layer cell. The sample was driven smoothly through the electrode surface by a micro peristaltic pump and then measured by chronoamperometry. The effect of modified materials, dielectric and electrochemical operating conditions were investigated. The whole response time of COD was 1.5 min and the demand for the sample was about 2 mL. It turned out that the linear range of response in the low concentration region was 0.15 100 mg/L, the linear equation was i(A) = 3.974c (mg/L) + 0.2295 (r = 0.9991) and the detection limit was 0.04 mg/L. The linear response range in the high concentration region was 100 450 mg/L, and the linear equation was i(A) = 1.938c (mg/L) + 230.9 (r = 0.9877). Compared with the national standard method (GB11914-89) for measuring the actual water samples (Qinhuai River, Xuanwu Lake and Nanjing tap water), the correlation between them was quite good and the analysis time was dropped to 1/100. This new sensing system provided an environmentally friendly and portable method for detection of COD without using expensive, highly corrosive and toxic reagents.

Although noteworthy breakthroughs were made, critical issues, such as portability, the need for well-trained personnel, costly/complex instrumentations, long response time, and the introduction of secondary contaminants, required attention. Hence, developing a low-cost, user-friendly, real-time, portable analytical platform for rapid and on-site analysis remained imperative. Solid-state colorimetric sensors have gained widespread popularity due to their low cost, ease of use, and brilliant sensitivity/selectivity. Results We have successfully unfolded an ultra-portable azomethine-infused structurally interwoven polymer monolith as the solid-state chromatic sensor for the quantitative naked-eye detection of ultra-trace Cu 2+ in industrial/environmental samples. For the sensor fabrication, non-hygroscopic conjugated Schiff-base receptors, namely N-(1E,2E)-3-(4-dimethylamino)phenyl)allylidene)-3-nitrobenzohydrazide (DPAN) and 2,3-bis(((1E,2E)-3-(4-dimethylamino)phenyl)allylidene)amino)malononitrile (DPAM) were synthesized in-house and voluminously immobilized onto a crack-free porous poly(4VP- co -EGDMA) monolith framework. The topological structure and functionalities of the porous polymer monolith and chromatic sensor materials were examined using various surface analytical and microscopic techniques. The excellent surface area and intriguing interlaced porosity features of the tailor-made polymer monolith facilitated the voluminous anchoring of the chromatic receptors for the selective/sensitive targeting of Cu 2+ . The DPAN and DPAM receptor-loaded poly(4VP- co -EGDMA) sensors exhibited a linear range of 0-150 μg/L, with the limit of detection of 0.11 and 0.13 μg/L for Cu 2+ , respectively. The sensors manifested Cu 2+ specificity amidst concomitant matrix ions to highlight the relevance of the proposed solid-state sensor. Significance The sensor materials offered a reliable approach for detecting and quantifying environmentally toxic and industrially pertinent Cu 2+ from aqueous samples, with the prospect of large-scale production, owing to the sensor's integrated compact design that can be reused for repeated real-time surveillance. The sensor's ability to sense/trap traces of toxic Cu 2+ can provide an early warning about the growing toxicity in a particular resource, thereby providing an opportunity to initiate remediation protocols for speedy decontamination.

Abstract:The coupling of biological organisms with electrodes enables the development of sustainable, low cost, and potentially self-sustained biosensors. A critical aspect is to obtain portable bioelectrodes where the biological material is immobilized on the electrode surface to be utilized on demand. Herein, we developed an approach for the rapid entrapment and immobilization of metabolically active yeast cells in a biocompatible polydopamine layer, which does not require a separate and time-consuming synthesis. The reported approach allows obtaining the "electrical wire" of intact and active yeast cells with resulting current generation from glucose oxidation. Additionally, the electrochemical performance of the biohybrid yeast-based system has been characterized by the presence of CuSO 4 , a widely used pesticide, in the environmentally relevant concentration range of 20–100 μM. The system enabled the rapid preliminary monitoring of the contaminant based on variations in current generation, with a limit of detection of 12.5 μM CuSO 4 . The present approach for the facile preparation of portable yeast-based electrochemical biosensors paves the way for the future development of sustainable systems for environmental monitoring.

Abstract:Copper ions (Cu2+) pose significant risks to both human health and the environment as they tend to accumulate in soil and water. To address this issue, an innovative method using biomass-derived fluorescent carbon dots (D-CDs) synthesized via a hydrothermal process, with xylan serving as the carbon source was developed. D-CDs solution exhibited remarkable sensitivity and selectivity as a fluorescence sensor for Cu2+, boasting a low detection threshold of 0.64 μM. In order to facilitate real-time monitoring of Cu2+, solid-state fluorescent nanofiber membrane (NFD-CDs) through electrospinning was engineered. Additionally, D-CDs demonstrated successful Cu2+ detection in various real water samples, including those sourced from Xuanwu Lake, the Yangtze River, tap water, and bottled water, with accurate recovery rates observed. As a result, this research introduces a dual-mode analytical system for onsite detection of Cu2+ in real scenarios. By harnessing biomass-derived fluorescent CDs materials and solid-state fluorescence sensors, this approach offers a promising solution for addressing the challenges associated with Cu2+ contamination.
Copper Oxide Anchored Carbon Nanofibers: A Versatile Platform for Multiplex Detection of Antibiotics, Heavy Metals and Pesticides

Abstract:Electrochemical sensors offer promising prospects for real‐time pollutant monitoring. In this study, copper oxide‐dispersed graphitic carbon nanofibers (CuO‐CNFs) grown via chemical vapour deposition were employed as a robust platform for detecting a variety of environmental pollutants. This array‐based sensor adeptly identifies three different classes of analytes, i.e., antibiotics (chloramphenicol (CP) and tylosin tartrate (TT)), heavy metals (cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb)), and pesticides (quinalphos (QP) and imidacloprid (IP)). The CuO‐CNF‐modified GCE array rapidly discerns (<15 sec) a broad linear range: 1‐20 ppm for CP, 1‐13.33 ppm for TT, 0.66‐11.66 ppm for Cd, 20‐33.33 ppm for Pb, 1.6‐11.6 ppm for QP, and 5‐25 ppm for IP, boasting quantification limits of 1.0, 1.0, 0.66, 20.0, 1.6, and 5.0 ppm for CP, TT, Cd, Pb, QP, and IP, respectively. Notably, this sensor achieves simultaneous identification of mixed analytes, including CP and TT, Cd and Pb, and QP and IP, within real tap water. The electrochemical sensor exhibits robustness; heightened sensitivity, selectivity, and stability; swift response; and impressive reproducibility in detecting CP, TT, Cd, Pb, QP, and IP within aqueous samples. Consequently, this array‐based electrochemical sensor has emerged as a rapid and simultaneous detection tool for diverse pollutant residues in surface and groundwater samples.

Abstract:Heavy metal ions, i.e., copper(II) (Cu(II)), are harmful to the environment and our health. The current research established an eco-friendly and efficient metal-sensitive indicator, which can identify Cu(II) ions in both liquid and solid forms, by utilizing anthocyanin extract obtained from jambolao fruit ( Syzgium cumini ) that is incorporated within bacterial cellulose nanofibers (BCNF).The CIE Lab color parameters demonstrated that Cu(II) binding causes a sensible change in color. It was observed that the visible color altered with an increase in the Cu(II) concentration. The bacterial cellulose nanofibers that were altered with anthocyanin were analyzed using ATR-FTIR and FESEM. The sensor's selectivity was tested by using a range of metal ions such as lead (Pb 2+ ), cobalt (Co 2+ ), cadmium (Cd 2+ ), nickel (Ni 2+ ), aluminium (Al 3+ ), barium (Ba 2+ ), manganese (Mn 2+ ), zinc (Zn 2+ ), mercury (Hg 2+ ) and sodium (Na + ). The findings demonstrated that the suggested sensor showed excellent selectivity toward Cu(II) ion. Cu(II) can be accurately identified using the sensing technique, with detection limits ranging from 10–400 ppm and 50–500 ppm for liquid and solid samples, respectively, and through observation with naked eye. The fabricated green metallochromic sensor is promising to be a simple, cheap, mobile and easily operable for the real-time and on-site detection of Cu(II) ion.

Abstract:Simple and sensitive electrochemical sensors were fabricated from cerium oxide (CeO 2 ) and copper-benzene tricarboxylic acid–modified cerium oxide (CeO 2 -Cu-BTC) materials for differential pulse voltammetric analysis of toxic cadmium (Cd) ions in aqueous solutions. The materials were prepared by hydrothermal method and structurally characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). The CeO 2 -modified carbon paste electrode (CeCPE) and the CeO 2 -Cu-BTC-modified carbon paste electrode (CeBCPE) were electrochemically characterized by their cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance study in standard K 3 [Fe(CN) 6 ] single-electron redox process. Their electrochemical surface areas, electrode surface coverages, and charge transfer resistances were calculated to be 1.46 cm 2 , 2.338 × 10 −5 mol∙cm −2 , and 2790 Ω and 5.48 cm 2 , 2.476 × 10 −5 mol∙cm −2 , and 1254.65 Ω for CeCPE and CeBCPE, respectively. These fabricated electrodes were used as electrochemical sensors for cadmium ion estimation by optimizing the experimental parameters through differential pulse voltammetry The optimized conditions included 10% modifier for CeCPE and 5% modifier for CeBCPE in 0.12 M HCl solution of pH 5 as supporting electrolyte at − 1.2 V deposition for 30 s in 0.01 to 10 mg L −1 linear cadmium solution range. Under these conditions, the limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.368 mg L −1 and 0.005 mg L −1 was calculated for CeCPE and CeBCPE electrodes, respectively. The limit of detection (LOD) was calculated to be 0.121 mg L −1 and 0.002 mg L −1 for CeCPE and CeBCPE, respectively. All the experimental results indicated that electrodes fabricated from CeO 2 -Cu-BTC show better performance as compared to CeO 2 -based electrodes. Both these types of electrochemical sensors presented good repeatability and performance in the presence of interfering ions as well. From these findings, it can also be inferred that these electrochemical sensors can provide a simple and very sensitive method for approximation of toxic cadmium ions in aqueous solutions.
