Abstract:Over the past decade, electrochemical energy storage (EES) devices have greatly improved, as a wide variety of advanced electrode active materials and new device architectures have been developed. These new materials and devices should be evaluated against clear and rigorous metrics, primarily based on the evidence of real performances. A series of criteria are commonly used to characterize and report performance of EES systems in the literature. However, as advanced EES systems are becoming more and more sophisticated, the methodologies to reliably evaluate the performance of the electrode active materials and EES devices need to be refined to realize the true promise as well as the limitations of these fast-moving technologies, and target areas for further development. In the absence of a commonly accepted core group of metrics, inconsistencies may arise between the values attributed to the materials or devices and their real performances. Herein, we provide an overview of the energy storage devices from conventional capacitors to supercapacitors to hybrid systems and ultimately to batteries. The metrics for evaluation of energy storage systems are described, although the focus is kept on capacitive and hybrid energy storage systems. In addition, we discuss the challenges that still need to be addressed for establishing more sophisticated criteria for evaluating EES systems. We hope this effort will foster ongoing dialog and promote greater understanding of these metrics to develop an international protocol for accurate assessment of EES systems.

Abstract:Due to the tremendous importance of electrochemical energy storage, numerous new materials and electrode architectures for batteries and supercapacitors have emerged in recent years. Correctly characterizing these systems requires considerable time, effort, and experience to ensure proper metrics are reported. Many new nanomaterials show electrochemical behavior somewhere in between conventional double‐layer capacitor and battery electrode materials, making their characterization a non‐straightforward task. It is understandable that some researchers may be misinformed about how to rigorously characterize their materials and devices, which can result in inflation of their reported data. This is not uncommon considering the current state of the field nearly requires record breaking performance for publication in high‐impact journals. Incorrect characterization and data reporting misleads both the materials and device development communities, and it is the shared responsibility of the community to follow rigorous reporting methodologies to ensure published results are reliable to ensure constructive progress. This tutorial aims to clarify the main causes of inaccurate data reporting and to give examples of how researchers should proceed. The best practices for measuring and reporting metrics such as capacitance, capacity, coulombic and energy efficiencies, electrochemical impedance, and the energy and power densities of capacitive and pseudocapacitive materials are discussed.

Galvanic Corrosion Underlies Coulombic Efficiency Differences in High-Performing Lithium Metal Battery Electrolytes

Abstract:Current guidelines for electrolyte engineering in lithium metal batteries are based on design metrics such as lithium morphology, electrolyte transport properties, solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) characteristics, and lithium-electrolyte reactivity. In our work, we show that those design metrics fail to account for performance differences in new high-performing electrolytes whereas galvanic corrosion does. This insight regarding the importance of galvanic corrosion is enabled by the combination of machine learning with rigorous experimental characterization. First, we partition our electrolyte data into low and high Coulombic efficiency (CE) segments to obtain an interpretable machine learning model which informs the design of high-performing (high CE) electrolytes. We design new model-guided, high-performing electrolytes and use spectroscopy and electroanalytical methods to demonstrate the weak correlation between common design metrics and performance in the high-performing electrolytes. Our work results in the design of a high-performing electrolyte with a Coulombic efficiency (CE) of 99.6%, a new understanding that common performance indicators are not sufficient for informing the development of high-performing electrolytes, and the identification of galvanic corrosion as an important performance driver in high-performing electrolytes.

Abstract:Electrochemical performance measurements on novel battery technologies are slow and require substantial resources. For example, a common metric for assessing the cycle lifetime of a cell is by charging and discharging at a rate of one cycle every six hours (C/3) for 1000 cycles and reporting the remaining capacity after the measurement. At this rate, a single measurement takes eight months to acquire useful data. Even worse, the benchmark for an acceptable shelf-life (calendar life) is to retain 80% of the initial cell capacity through 10 years. As of now, the only reliable method for acquiring this value is to hold the cell at open circuit for the duration of the time (10 years) while performing intermittent reference performance tests. The ability to quickly screen new chemistries for LIB applications offers tremendous value for accelerating discovery. Here, I will present an electrochemical impedance technique that measures a key parameter of the solid|electrolyte interface. This method uses the Helmholtz and Gouy-Chapman-Stern models of electrochemical interfaces to approximate the 'health' of the anode|electrolyte interface. These measurements strongly correlate to the average Coulombic efficiency of batteries with different cell chemistries which may offer predictive power for assessing the long-term cycle and calendar lifetimes.
Benchmarking the Ragone behaviour and power performance trends of pseudocapacitive batteries

Abstract:The "holy grail" of energy storage is to achieve both high energy and high power densities (≧100 Wh/L and ~10 4 W/L, respectively) as characterized in a Ragone plot. However, across the macroscopic dimensions over which energy storage systems operate, power performance is fundamentally limited by both drift and diffusion processes. In this work a macroscopic variation on the Gerischer-Hopfield formalism is applied to explore how the motion of electrical charges, moving between redox species, and screening counter-ions might be engineered in a pseudocapacitive system employing quantized capacitance (in the form of a pseudocapacitive battery) to reach this long-sought metric. Our theoretical findings show that the electron diffusion timescale between redox species generally determines power performance trends when pseudocapacitive coatings are applied monolithically. This electron-diffusion--dominated timescale, in turn, is shown to scale with the square of the coating thickness. However, when conducting pathways (or shunts) are introduced to substantially reduce the mean distance for electron diffusion the Ragone performance becomes dominated by ion drift and diffusion --- even when the diffusion constants of all species are held equal. The resulting trends, for this shunting regime, show a power performance timescale that scales in a more linear fashion with increasing thickness of the redox-active region. By analyzing the Ragone performance metrics for realistic coating thicknesses between these two operational regimes, the resulting findings suggest that the diffusion constants needed to achieve the aforementioned high-performance metrics are plausibly achievable for both electronic and ionic charges in this proposed class of pseudocapacitive systems.

Abstract:Tremendous efforts have been dedicated into the development of high-performance energy storage devices with nanoscale design and hybrid approaches. The boundary between the electrochemical capacitors and batteries becomes less distinctive. The same material may display capacitive or battery-like behavior depending on the electrode design and the charge storage guest ions. Therefore, the underlying mechanisms and the electrochemical processes occurring upon charge storage may be confusing for researchers who are new to the field as well as some of the chemists and material scientists already in the field. This review provides fundamentals of the similarities and differences between electrochemical capacitors and batteries from kinetic and material point of view. Basic techniques and analysis methods to distinguish the capacitive and battery-like behavior are discussed. Furthermore, guidelines for material selection, the state-of-the-art materials, and the electrode design rules to advanced electrode are proposed.

Abstract:The development of electrochemical capacitors (i.e. supercapacitors) have attracted a lot of attention in recent years because of the increasing demand for efficient, high-power energy storage. Electrochemical capacitors (ECs) are particularly attractive for transportation and renewable energy generation applications, taking advantage of their superior power capability and outstanding cycle life. Over the past decade, various advanced electrode materials and cell design are being studied to improve the energy density of ECs. Hybrid Li-ion capacitors and pseudo-capacitors that utilize fast surface redox reactions of metal oxide and doped polymers are the prime candidates being considered. This paper is concerned with the metrics being used to describe the performance of ECs and how the metrics are evaluated by testing devices and how the data from the testing are best interpreted. Emphasize is on relating testing of advanced ECs using materials more complex than activated carbons to testing electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) using carbon in both electrodes. A second focus of the paper is projecting the potential of the advanced materials and ionic liquid electrolytes for the development of complete EC cells having an energy density more than a factor of ten greater the energy density of the EDLC devices currently on the market. This potential was evaluated by calculating the performance (energy and power) of a series of ECs that utilize the advanced materials that have been studied by electrochemists over the past 10–15 years. The capacitance and resistance of the advanced ECs were calculated utilizing specific capacitance (F/g or F/cm3) and porosity data for the electrode materials and ionic conductivity of the electrolytes. It was concluded that hybrid ECs can be developed with energy densities of at least 50 Wh/kg, 70 Wh/L with efficient power greater than 3 kW/kg. Continued research on micro-porous carbons with specific capacitance of 200F/g and greater is needed.to achieve these EC performance goals.

Abstract:This review provides a detailed overview of the electrochemical performance degradation mechanisms that affect high‐loading electrodes and presents various solutions to mitigate these issues. Furthermore, potential pathways for the development of high‐loading electrodes with high performances that are suitable for industrial manufacturing and commercial deployment, are proposed in this review article. High‐loading electrodes play a crucial role in designing practical high‐energy batteries as they reduce the proportion of non‐active materials, such as current separators, collectors, and battery packaging components. This design approach not only enhances battery performance but also facilitates faster processing and assembly, ultimately leading to reduced production costs. Despite the existing strategies to improve rechargeable battery performance, which mainly focus on novel electrode materials and high‐performance electrolyte, most reported high electrochemical performances are achieved with low loading of active materials (<2 mg cm−2). Such low loading, however, fails to meet application requirements. Moreover, when attempting to scale up the loading of active materials, significant challenges are identified, including sluggish ion diffusion and electron conduction kinetics, volume expansion, high reaction barriers, and limitations associated with conventional electrode preparation processes. Unfortunately, these issues are often overlooked. In this review, the mechanisms responsible for the decay in the electrochemical performance of high‐loading electrodes are thoroughly discussed. Additionally, efficient solutions, such as doping and structural design, are summarized to address these challenges. Drawing from the current achievements, this review proposes future directions for development and identifies technological challenges that must be tackled to facilitate the commercialization of high‐energy‐density rechargeable batteries.

Abstract:Abstract Electrochemical energy storage devices (EESs) play a crucial role for the construction of sustainable energy storage system from the point of generation to the end user due to the intermittent nature of renewable sources. Additionally, to meet the demand for next-generation electronic applications, optimizing the energy and power densities of EESs with long cycle life is the crucial factor. Great efforts have been devoted towards the search for new materials, to augment the overall performance of the EESs. Although there are a lot of ongoing researches in this field, the performance does not meet up to the level of commercialization. A further understanding of the charge storage mechanism and development of new electrode materials are highly required. The present review explains the overview of recent progress in supercapattery devices with reference to their various aspects. The different charge storage mechanisms and the multiple factors involved in the performance of the supercapattery are described in detail. Moreover, recent advancements in this supercapattery research and its electrochemical performances are reviewed. Finally, the challenges and possible future developments in this field are summarized.

Abstract:The electrode performance acquired in the classical half‐cells are discovered to be not all reliable, as a misconception can be caused once the electrolyte is chemically unstable in relation to the metal‐electrode. The reason for this phenomenon is elucidated by solvation chemistry, particularly the mechanism of mitigating it by forming intermolecular interactions. A half‐cell that is composed of electrode and metal (e.g., lithium) is the most classical model for examining electrode performance in battery community, by which the voltage versus capacity profile is the important indicator. However, it is found that these results are not all reliable, as a misconception of electrode performance can be caused once the electrolyte is chemically unstable. As a paradigm, it is demonstrated that the diethyl carbonate (DEC) solvent can chemically react with lithium metal to form insoluble and soluble by‐products, which can accumulate on the lithium anode to influence the lithium potential and/or migrate to the counter electrode to proceed with the uncompleted electrochemical reactions. The resultant voltage‐capacity profile cannot reflect the actual electrode performance, such as the lithium storing capability within the graphite. The reason for this phenomenon is elucidated based on solvation chemistry, particularly the mechanism of mitigating it by introducing ethylene carbonatesolvent to form new hydrogen bonds. The viewpoint is further verified by employing the full cell and also extended in sodium and potassium batteries. This study shows the necessity of discerning the reliability of electrode performance and also sheds light on the importance of designing a compatible electrolyte to examine electrode performance.

Abstract:Large‐scale electrochemical energy storage is considered one of the crucial steps toward a sustainable energy economy. Science and industry worldwide are conducting intensive research into various ways to improve existing battery concepts or transferring novel concepts to application. The development of materials and electrodes is an essential step in this process. However, the evaluation of the achieved performance parameters and the comparison of the different studies at this technological level with regard to practical applications is challenging, since special electrodes and cell concepts are typically used at laboratory scale. In the present work, a straightforward computational tool (Ragone calculator) is provided to estimate performance data at the full cell level based on electrochemical measurements on electrodes. Application of the Ragone calculator simplifies the comparability of the different studies and allows an appropriate classification of the reported performance data. In addition, extrapolation of the results to the battery level can make a valuable contribution to assessing at early stages whether a development is target‐oriented or in which direction it needs to be advanced. To enable a reliable assessment of reported performance metrics of novel battery materials and electrodes, a straightforward computational tool is provided with which performance data can be estimated at the full‐cell level. Application of the Ragone calculator ensures comparability of independent research results and improves transparency for the industry, supporting the targeted development of advanced batteries.

Abstract:The improvement of our living standards puts forward higher requirements for energy storage systems, especially rechargeable batteries. Unfortunately, phenomena such as capacity failure, etc. have been major difficulties in the field of energy storage. Therefore, we need some advanced means to explore the reaction process and mechanisms of the cell. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) has the advantages of a high sensitivity to electrons, lack of damage to samples, quantitative analysis, etc., which can make for a more in-depth exploration of most paramagnetic electrode materials and metal electrode materials. After a brief description of the principle of EPR, this review briefly summarizes the application of EPR to the characterization of transition metal oxide cathode and lithium metal anode electrode materials in recent years, such as showing how to study electrode materials by using EPR in situ and operando .

Abstract:Today's society and economy demand high-performance energy storage systems with large battery capacities and super-fast charging. However, a common problematic consequence is the delamination of the mass loading (including, active materials, binder and conductive carbon) from the current collector at high C-rates and also after certain cycle tests. In this work, surface structuring of aluminum (Al) foils (as a current collector) is developed to overcome the aforementioned delamination process for sulfur (S)/carbon composite cathodes of Li-S batteries (LSBs). The structuring process allows a mechanical interlocking of the loaded mass with the structured current collector, thus increasing its electrode adhesion and its general stability. Through directed crack formation within the mass loading, this also allows an enhanced electrolyte wetting in deeper layers, which in turn improves ion transport at increased areal loadings. Moreover, the interfacial resistance of this composite is reduced leading to an improved battery performance. In addition, surface structuring improves the wettability of water-based pastes, eliminating the need for additional primer coatings and simplifying the electrode fabrication process. Compared to the cells made with untreated current collectors, the cells made with structured current collectors significantly improved rate capability and cycling stability with a capacity of over 1000 mAh g −1 . At the same time, the concept of mechanical interlocking offers the potential of transfer to other battery and supercapacitor electrodes.

Abstract:Highlights • Magnesium compounds and their composites for supercapacitors were highlighted. • Various regulative strategies and their mechanisms for regulating the electrochemical properties of magnesium compounds were collected. • The challenges and outlooks of magnesium compounds in high performance supercapacitors have been discussed. The application of Mg-based electrochemical energy storage materials in high performance supercapacitors is an essential step to promote the exploitation and utilization of magnesium resources in the field of energy storage. Unfortunately, the inherent chemical properties of magnesium lead to poor cycling stability and electrochemical reactivity, which seriously limit the application of Mg-based materials in supercapacitors. Herein, in this review, more than 70 research papers published in recent 10 years were collected and analyzed. Some representative research works were selected, and the results of various regulative strategies to improve the electrochemical performance of Mg-based materials were discussed. The effects of various regulative strategies (such as constructing nanostructures, synthesizing composites, defect engineering, and binder-free synthesis, etc.) on the electrochemical performance and their mechanism are demonstrated using spinel-structured MgX 2 O 4 and layered structured Mg-X-LDHs as examples. In addition, the application of magnesium oxide and magnesium hydroxide in electrode materials, MXene's solid spacers and hard templates are introduced. Finally, the challenges and outlooks of Mg-based electrochemical energy storage materials in high performance supercapacitors are also discussed.

Abstract:Advanced and sustainable energy storage technologies with tailorable electrochemically active materials platform are the present research dominancy toward an urgent global need for electrical vehicles and portable electronics. Moreover, intensive efforts are given to screen the widely available low-cost materials with a focus to achieve superior electrochemical performance for the fabrication of energy storage devices. Transition metal-based sulfides have prodigious technological credibility due to their compositional- and morphological-based tunable electrochemical properties. Here the significant advances and present state-of-the-art of such assured materials in different energy storage devices are discussed. Assessment of the intensive work invested in the progress of transition metals such as V, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn Mo, and W based sulfides along with their structural/compositional engineering and addressable aspects for electrochemical performance enhancement are highlighted. Additionally, discussions on critical strategies for decisive mechanistic and kinetic views for charge storage phenomena with key challenges, such as volume expansions, low stability, and sluggish kinetics, are discussed. Abstract:The dynamic change of CEIs under different current densities are characterized by using in situ FTIR. The degradation of battery performance at high current densities may be attributed to the intrinsic component instability of CEIs. LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 with high nickel content plays a critical role in enabling lithium metal batteries (LMBs) to achieve high specific energy density, making them a prominent choice for electric vehicles (EVs). However, ensuring the long‐term cycling stability of the cathode electrolyte interfaces (CEIs), particularly at fast‐charge conditions, remains an unsolved challenge. The decay mechanism associated with CEIs and electrolytes in LMB at high current densities is still not fully understood. To address this issue, in situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) is employed to observe the dynamic process of formation/disappearance/regeneration of CEIs during charge and discharge cycles. These dynamic processes further exacerbate the instability of CEIs as current density increases, leading to rupture and dissolution of CEIs and subsequent deterioration in battery performance because of continuous electrolyte reactions. Additionally, the dynamic changes occurring within individual components of CEIs at different cycling stages and various current densities are also discussed. The results demonstrate that excellent capacity retention at small current density is attributed to enrichment of inorganic compounds (Li2CO3, LiF, etc.) and rendering better stability and smaller expansion of CEIs. The key to achieving excellent electrochemical performance at high current densities lies on protecting CEIs, mainly inorganic components.

Covalently Joined Electrode Architectures for Extreme Fast Charging Li-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Li-ion batteries are the backbone of all electric vehicles (EVs) in production today [1]. However, they compete poorly against the few-minute refueling time of fossil fuel powered vehicles [2, 3]. To successfully replace fossil fuel powered vehicles, the EV batteries must support charging rates under the 15-minute mark as determined by the eXtreme Fast Charging (XFC) standard defined by the U.S. Department of Energy [4]. When subjected to XFC charging rates, well-known problems of lithium plating and delamination plague graphite anodes due to local potential gradients and binder degradation respectively [5]. Our work replaces the traditional polymer binder with conductive titanium carbide interconnects that covalently join graphite particles as well as bond them to the current collector [6]. This new architecture demonstrates ~400% increase in electrical conductivity compared to traditional architectures with polymer binders while maintaining interparticle integrity and improving adhesion. The adhesion and mechanical properties are provided by conductive chemical bonds mitigating delamination as these novel bonds suffer less mechanical and chemical degradation under high current rates than adhesion provided by polymer binders. The improved conductivity was also utilized to form a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) at rates up to 4C reducing the ionic impedance of the SEI interface significantly [7]. The improved graphite electrodes can sustain 15-minute charge maintaining 80% of the specific capacity of the graphite particles for 800 cycles at commercially relevant loadings. Our studies introduce an effective strategy to engineer Li-ion battery electrode architectures that simultaneously improve electrical and ionic conductivity mitigating lithium plating and delamination under XFC charging rate needed for the mass adoption of EVs.
