Abstract:s Traditional dressings tend to adhere to wounds during the healing process, causing secondary damage and delaying wound healing during replacement. Hydrophobic surfaces are resistant to the adhesion of cellular and proteinaceous wound exudates. Herein, a hydrophobic spunlace nonwoven-based dressing composed of the nano-silica/polydimethylsiloxane (SiO 2 /PDMS) composite cotton mesh was developed by a two-step spraying method. The process parameters were optimized by the L 9 (3 4 ) orthogonal experiment to obtain fabrics with excellent hydrophobicity and abrasion resistance. The optimized fabric finishing effect was achieved when the SiO 2 concentration was 0.8 wt%, the PDMS concentration was 0.8 wt%, the heat treatment temperature was 130 °C, and the time was 12 h. After optimization, the contact angle (CA) of the fabric was 145.0 ± 0.7°, and it only dropped by about 1° after the friction test. FTIR, XPS, SEM, and EDS analyses collectively demonstrated the presence of a cladding structure comprising SiO 2 and PDMS on the surface of the optimized fabric. This structural modification imparts desirable mechanical properties and anti-adhesion properties to the fabric. Tensile tests revealed little effect of the optimized finishing on the mechanical properties of the fabrics. Additionally, the anti-adhesion properties of the fabrics were evaluated by an in vitro gelatin model, showing a significant reduction in peeling energy for the optimized fabric. The peeling energies of the optimized fabric were 43.1 ± 28.8 J/m 2 and 84.1 ± 12.6 J/m 2 in the machine direction (MD) and cross direction (CD), respectively, indicating about 80 % superior anti-adhesion effect compared to commercially available oil gauze. Furthermore, the optimized fabric exhibited excellent biocompatibility, causing no hemolysis, pro-coagulant effect and favorable cytocompatibility. These results indicate that this hydrophobic spunlace nonwoven fabric has great potential for the application of anti-adhesive medical dressings.
