Abstract:As increasing attention comes to be focussed on environmental problems, the special characteristics of these problems begin to be appreciated. In part, the attention arises from the recognition of the damage done to the environment, not only by industrial and urban development, mining and recreation, but also by changes in agricultural and forestry practices. In part, our concern stems from the realisation that the non-renewable resources of the world are being used at an increasing rate, and that many of these resources will be depleted, even at present rates of use, within our lifetimes. Of special concern to this conference is that class of problems represented by the need to rehabilitate ecosystems which have already been damaged by our search for an increasingly higher standard of living.
